UberFacts says it shares "the most unimportant things you'll never need to know" and I have to admit, that's a pretty accurate description of its content. Launched in 2009, the Internet project provides people with random facts on all kinds of topics.

From the number of janitors in the US with PhDs to the genius way Swedes protested their government classifying homosexuality as an illness, these titbits of information will make you an expert on trivia in no time. So grab yourself some broccoli (random fact: the vegetable is rich in vitamin K, and a few studies in older adults have linked a higher vitamin K intake to better memory), continue scrolling, and upvote your favorite entries!

As it turns out, there are some biological reasons behind people's desire to "store" trivia in their brain and the rush of excitement they feel when they get the chance to use it. According to psychologist John Kounios Ph.D., it's a lot like playing roulette, too.

"You get a rush or a neuroreward signal or a dopamine burst from winning," the professor of psychology and director of the doctoral program in applied cognitive and brain sciences at Drexel University in Pennsylvania, told Healthline. "I think whenever you're challenged with a trivia question and you happen to know it, you get a rush. It's sort of like gambling."

He said the benefits can also be similar to those of playing video games. However, unlike gambling and video games, trivia is generally not a potentially dangerous habit, Kounios said.

"I don't think there are any pitfalls. Like anything else that's fun, it takes up time."

Moreover, retaining information about things we're interested in can be like an exercise for the frontal cortex as the brain ages.

"That's the first thing to go with injury or with age if we don't use it," Deborah Stokes, Ph.D., L.P.C., B.C.N., a psychologist in Virginia who focuses on neurotherapy, said.

So there you have it, folks. Browsing trivia isn't a waste of time. It's a mental workout!

This. Treat everybody with respect and let them keep their dignity, even when they ask the same question over and over. This time it was a child but it is usually our own parents or grandparents, or maybe elderly neighbours with some form of dementia. Please, try to remember that they never keep asking the same question because they want to drive you nuts. They just want to hear the answer. Be kind.

Actually was a compromise between all the delegates. They removed a part where Jefferson wrote of the injustice of the slave trade. Now he was undeniably a slave owner, and probably not a good person, but calling a slave 3/5 of a person was radical thinking for that time.

Smoke breaks accumulate the equivalent of six full days per year? So us non-smokers are doing six more days’ worth of work than smokers? Yeah, we ought to earn SOMETHING for for all that extra work. Let’s hope this idea crosses the Pacific to the US.

I'm gonna make (maybe) a stupid question. How is it that people can go to breaks whenever they want? Depending on how many hours I work I have a certain amount of time for break... and so was in every job I had...

    Random Panda

5 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

In every place I have worked smokers are free to go out whenever they needed as long as they don't abuse the privilege. Here legally employers are required to give a lunch break and two short breaks to employees, but as long as as person's job is being done no one cares if you go out more often. A lot of non-smokers (like me) will sometimes join too for a coffee while the others have their smoke break. The only exceptions were a couple of places that had shifts and scheduled breaks for everyone.

Nevermind Trump making me miss Barack Obama, he even makes me pine for the days when GW Bush was in power. George and Michelle's easy-going friendship demonstrates that democrats and republicans are not mortal enemies, as Trump would have you believe. A good leader unites his countrymen, not divides them like der Drumpf.

Yes. Barack Obama said that he didn’t want to be the Democrat’s president, he wanted to be the President of the United States. The tangerine toddler, who, Lord willing, will be put in his rightful place, insults his political opponents because he doesn’t have enough logic to fill a teaspoon, much less counter their arguments. Of course, the mere fact that Obama was black was enough to divide the country because of the racists, but at least he didn’t actively contribute to it.

This reminds me of a moment in, I believe, the United Nations (but could have been the EU). To understand you need to know two things: firstly the origins of France come out of the Normans, the lot that invaded England in 1066; and that in the 50s, 60s, and 70s in the UK there was a much loved clownish comedian and actor called Norman Wisdom. Cue a serious French speaker stating that a complex situation called for 'a bit of Norman wisdom', all the translaters speaking into their delegates' ears, and the Brits absolutely falling about laughing, to the bafflement of the rest of the gathering.

Don't get fooled by the appearances, people. I'm going to tell you a true story I witnessed with my own eyes. This young man was wearing a mask, we were all waiting for the lift, in a semi-closed space. He took his mask, sneezed, uncovered (at least he made sure it was not in our direction), and put his mask back on. Yeah, that happened.

It's supposed to, dufus. This is what we call an echo-chamber. Bias confirmation. Stroking the ego. Think Jonestown and devotees of Xenu. Yes. Trump is quite likely a clinical narcissist, but the aim is not to avoid narcissists being elected to presidency but rather to funnel as large a number of people through a particular gate. And who is supposed to benefit, one way or another? You? Cute.

some people have a very simplistic viewpoint on the British empire, yes much wrong was done and religion was forced but we didn't do anything that the Spanish, Dutch ,French and Portuguese didn't do. In some cases we did good things, wasn't all bad bad, some people wish they still had British rule ask Hong Kong, lives are not better there now.I am not defending colonialism but its not a simple case of us being the bad guys, many leaders after the Empire did much worse like Robert Mugabe.

The sun never set on the British empire. The British empire ruled the globe and is liable for millions of deaths in the colony they ruled. The native population were kept as 3rd rate citizens. The French, Spanish, Portuguese, German, etc, colonial governments just robbed and destroy the world. Thanks for these God fearing nations we will have wars until the end of time. Slavery on a world wide scale is just abject. This is the legacy left by these European countries.

Then why don't we see the representations of other countries coming out of China, Japan, Middle East, f**k, Africa that have the same impact? Besides, it's not like there's an absence of political opinion about China in the US. Take it back say 50 years or so. No way would a movie like that be a hit in China. This has more to do with the effectiveness of US cultural export. Which is to say that Chinese culture is being slowly diluted and The Party has a point. This even validates North Korea and many of the Middle Eastern regimes based on such sentiment. It legitimises Stalin. It legitimises Hitler. It's an uncomfortable truth from a Western perspective, but a truth never-the-less.

Trump has studied Hitler for years. He had "My New Order”, a printed collection of Hitler's speeches, as bedside literature. That's how he came up with his "fake news". He also used the same tactics as Hitler did: find scapegoats to blame, tell the same lies over and over again and incite to violence without being too obvious about it.

Do keep in mind that many of the shots were started from ‘trigger-happy’ (irrational) police officers. Literally a female photographer got shot in the eye by a police officer who willingly targeted her. She lost that eye (you can google it to check). (I am white, btw).

To the person "not calling out either side" here: for a group of people hung from trees until 1960s, maced when trying to vote (NC 2020), and terrorized across the nation on a daily basis to "keep them from getting uppity," 7% seems low.

To @scyth. You are so completely wrong. I sat in Kenosha and watched several very peaceful protests from my front step. Not once did those protestors get out of line. But there were certainly a lot of trump supporters there to stir up things and make people think they were. I saw a number of trucks where people broke off, and changed their license plates once they left the protest. And then threw their trump stickers back on their vehicles. You're just a complete racists. I've seen your comments here before and you sicken me.

There are more terrorist attacks/threats on US home soil than terrorist threats/attacks from other countries. This is why their gun laws are pathetic, you are more likely to be accidentally shot by your own gun than by a terrorist from another country.

@Dori Krutzinger Have you looked closely at the two photos you posted? Obviously you are trying your best to make black folks look like the enemy of society, but did you actually look at them? The man with the Target cart is certainly 'looting.' There is no doubt of that at all. Stop and look at what he has chosen to steal; Ordinary mundane household items, and a handful of children's toys. Criminals steal jewelry, electronics, alcohol, tools, etc. People who simply have nothing left to lose are the people who steal ordinary necessities. People feel they have nothing left to lose when they find themselves in a society which labels and excludes them practically from birth. Changing that society is what we must do.

Unfortunately, for the longest time, DHS ignored them in favor of foreign terrorists—-who, after 9/11, targeted other countries way more than the US. I worked for TSA from 2012-2017. Even after one TSO was killed and another wounded—-on the job!—-whenever I would bring up domestic terrorism to the terror “specialists” making their frequent presentations to us, I’d get the deer in the headlights look before they plunged right back into talking about how Al-Quaeda and ISIS (and their cohorts) were out to kill us—-even though they had to cross a continent and an ocean to get here, while the homegrown terrorists just had to get in their pickup trucks and drive a much shorter distance.

I still go into stores where there are unmasked people. It is a state law, and all stores have a sign at the door telling people to wear masks. It's not a jailable offense of course, but there are no fines enforced, so there is no incentive for these people to comply. I try to keep my distance, but sometimes these idiots walk right up to/ past me. They give me dirty looks when I back away. I have the right to go out and shop once a week. It's the only place I ever get to go. (Thanks for listening to my rant, fellow Pandas.)

I once read about this big study done on long-married couples who claimed to still be deeply in love. The common denominator? Each thought the other was a better person than they actually were, as in smarter, better looking, more talented, funnier, etc. Basically, they saw their loved one through rose-colored glasses. I thought it was sweet.

Goes to show you that janitors should not be disrespected, no matter what their education level. They work hard and do work that most people would not do.

I have a PhD in Religion from Marquette University and two master's degrees in Church History and New Testament. I left academia to be close to family and to start a nonprofit urban farm to feed food-insecure people in my community. I had to take an entry-level job to pay the bills and keep my family fed while I build our movement and run a nonprofit with no pay. There are many, many compelling reasons that highly-educated people choose to work at jobs that do not require their education.

Wonder where those PhDs were from? It's ridiculous to know that a PhD isn't a PhD... depending on the country... and that there doesn't appear to be a system in place to make a PhD or Master's transferrable. I knew at least 2 couriers who had PhDs... one was a honest-to-jeebus Rocket Scientist (yes. Fully qualified Engineer/Physics/Tech post-doc)... BUT... the qualifications were from another country. Another was/is a Fertility specialist, MD AND PhD with ... genetics focus? I asked about what happened... and apparently there is no equivalency test... or a 1 year "This is how we do things in this country"... They were told "You have to *re-do all of your education from the ground up* if they wanted to practice here. THAT... is a problem.

This is an absolutely true story. I work for a nonprofit and business development. We have several associates who have talked about their refugee and immigrant folks who are janitors and cleaning ladies and construction workers, simply because their education doesn’t transfer to the United States.

I worked for a Janitorial Franchise Company. 80% of Our franchisees fled to US for "A Better Life" before realizing the US systematically keeps people of color down. A Russian doctor can get certified easier than an Argentinian doctor. Oh & Btw, those "Janitors" made more than most doctors. Blew my 6 figure salary away.

Same with street names. When I first moved to Raleigh, NC in 1979, there was a street just outside the city limits called Jackass Road. I always chuckled when I’d see the street sign, and liked the non-conformity of it. By 1993, when I moved away, the name had been changed to some banal thing that I don’t even remember. Don’t know why, since jackass is another name for a donkey—-the word ass is even in the Bible (and NC is firmly located in the Bible Belt).

The city of Pula from Croatia, translated in a formal way, in Romanian is penis. Do we want the Croatians to change the name of the city because we find it offensive? No! We can't wait to travel there and take photos with the plaque, where the name of Pula is written, and show it to our friends :) Don't even get me started with the currency from Botswana :))

Honestly, I can't decide whether Earth would be better or worse without humans. Humans pollute the Earth insanely, and nature would thrive better if humans had never existed. But humans are also helping with overpopulation of certain animals (not that I like the idea of animals being killed on a daily basis). And I'm just now realising this comment is kind of off topic

For those who may not know: This concept is named after the film "Gaslight", with Charles Boyer and Ingrid Bergman. He's an abusive spouse who is trying to drive his wife mad by telling her not to trust her own memory and senses. His ultimate goal is to gain her inheritance.

There is no federal income tax in Puerto Rico. PR has repeatedly made the choice not to be a state or become independent. They are voting again this year on that option.... Third time in ten years.

If they officially join as a state, they gain the ability to vote. That's just how it works. Spinning a fact to make it sound unfair is manipulation.

I have always felt that there was something wrong with the signal from my brain to let me know that I'm thirsty. As a child it was a real problem and led to health issues. As an adult, I have to make sure I drink water at regular intervals or I would just go all day and not realise that I'm thirsty.

By the time your body tells you you're low on water, you're already dehydrated. I usually get a headache but it's too late to do anything other than suffer (sometimes painkillers don't work on dehydration headache, at least for me)

This is probably the amount of water you need, not the amount you need to drink. Almost half of that you consume in solid form on a normal day. Our food consists of large amounts of water.

Besides, it was way too generalized. So, a 100 lb woman has to drink the same amount of water as a 220 lb man? Do you know just how hard it is to drink 64 oz of just water, while discounting all other beverages that contain water? Thankfully, we’re now allowed to include other things containing water as helping to keep us hydrated.

"100 years old" does not need hyphens. You ONLY hyphenate an age if it's being used as an adjective, eg "the 100-year-old man blew out his candles", or as a noun, eg "the 100-year-old blew out his candles". Stop adding hyphens randomly! You wouldn't say "people in Japan who are over-6-feet-tall" or "people in Japan who like-to-go-shopping".

Wildfires are said to become more frequent here too. But then, the UK has very unpredictable weather too, given we're in the middle of a bunch of five main air masses. :I

That was September 30, 2020. November 2, 2020 there are 236,501 Americans killed by the virus. So in October EACH DAY 1000 Americans have died. But The White House science office listed "ending the COVID-19 pandemic" on 10/27/20 as the top accomplishment of President Trump's term.

Don't you mean the less than 10k actually killed by the virus, not the full number who dies with Covid in their system? On August 26, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a report showing that in 94 percent of the roughly 180,000 deaths that have been attributed to COVID-19, “on average, there were 2.6 additional conditions or causes per death.” As the CDC report notes, “For 6% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned.”

As long as he makes sure they’re educated and trained for careers that they not only enjoy, but that can support them well, I’m down with this. Though a small inheritance of memorabilia should be acceptable. I mean, I inherited a good portion of the furniture I grew up with when my father died (my mother died 10 years before him). My brothers (or their wives) didn’t want a lot of it, so I got the dining room set (table with leaves, chairs, and hutch), several antique tables, and a master bedroom set, which are now in use in my house. Every time I look at, dust, or use any of it, I think of doing the same growing up.

Personally, I think we should be governed by impoverished monks and led by a Dali Lama. Perhaps then "the right thing" and "the best choice for everyone" might actually get some play in the U.S. I'd like to meet the idiot who decided we'd turn the nation over to marauders (politicians) masquerading as "public servants." Public servants, my eye.

Actually this is true folks (sorry you were downvoted). Sleep loss over time can contribute to weight gain and obesity. It elevates certain hormone levels in the body, like cortisol. This hormone makes you hold onto extra fat. Not only that, but it may also increase your appetite and lead to a slower metabolism. Also, don't know about anyone else but when I can't sleep the contents of the fridge grows tempting or I'll at least make myself hot chocolate!

Another good argument for the four day working week. I'm sure everything that is done in 5 days could be done in 4, and having 3 days off in a row would improve everyone's lives immeasurably. May not work for all professions, but for most.

I could be wrong but that's not how I understood it. I thought it belongs to The Crown Estate which in turn belongs to the reigning monarch for the duration of their reign, by virtue of their accession to the throne. But it is not the private property of the monarch.

This is to help users realize if an app is spying on them. It's not necessarily Apple doing the spying. This helps people discover bad third-party apps. Also helps absent-minded people remember.

Ah, but if your dog has a problem then the diet he or she is on is most likely to be unsuitable for that dog. Probably the same goes for the husband but I'm more bothered at the thought of the poor doggies having tummy-ache. 😁

That may sound great but I watched a doco where a woman orgasms countless times every day. It was awful, it is exhausting, she had to quit her job, doesn’t leave the house, and sometimes the orgasms cause her pain. Not a life I would want to live, I will stick with what I get.

The secret to alcohol consumption without a hangover, is water. Yes it'll make you pee a lot, but if while drinking alcohol, you keep drinking equal amounts of water, you don't get dehydrated which is the main reason why we get a hangover. Also, food. Never drink with an empty stomach ;)

My nephew is one of those people. He is also able to eat and eat and eat as much junk food as he likes and not put on weight. He's 6 foot 2 and weighs 10 stone (140 lbs). Everyone in the family is jealous of him.

I keep hoping I'll develop immunity but no luck so far. I'll keep trying though . Strictly for the benefit of humanity of course.

Literally anyone can be nominated. It only means something if you win it, or are at least considered. I like to imagine his nomination has already been shredded and flushed down a Norwegian toilet.

If Adolf Hitler can be nominated in 1939, why not Trump? The world is so absurd that very little surprises me anymore.

Yes Trump is an idiot, but he also signed the bill that made animal cruelty a felony.

“Any person or organization can be nominated by anyone eligible to nominate,” the committee states. The Norwegian Nobel Committee has no input into submissions, though it decides who actually wins the prize. “To simply be nominated is therefore not an endorsement or extended honour to imply affiliation with the Nobel Peace Prize or its related institutions,” the committee states. https://www.factcheck.org/2020/09/trumps-nobel-nonsense/

By a Norwegian right-wing extremist. Not by an official Nobel Prize committee. "The statutes of the Nobel Foundation do not allow information about nominations, considerations, or investigations relating to awarding the prize to be made public for at least 50 years after a prize has been awarded."
