If we want to learn something new and grow as individuals, we need to expose ourselves to things we haven't encountered before. That's often easier said than done, because stepping outside our comfort zones requires a willingness to be vulnerable in the face of the unfamiliar.
So, we decided to create a controlled, zero-risk environment where everyone who wants to expand their horizons could easily do so. Bored Panda put together a list of fascinating pictures for curious minds, revealing nature, technology, and other aspects of the world you might never have explored—each one ready to spark your next big interest.

Why Sunscreen Is Important
Wow one of fathers arms is like this. He's in his 80s now but years of farming and being on a tractor with his right arm only getting sun. We live in Ireland so it wasn't much sun and for past 30 years he wore sunscreen but the damage was already done. The skin is so brittle it bleeds a lot. We're all very fair skinned mostly red heds so it really drives home the importance of sunscreen even in countries that aren't known for sun.

"Skilfully combined with a number of other essentials" - and they would be? Labelling laws (when well written and enforced) are some of my favourite laws. They show the level of s.h.i.t companies will resort to if left to get on with it unregulated.
On that note, the brand is listed as Kohler...which is now known for toilets and sinks.
Load More Replies...Was in some UK cough sweets until the 1940s I think?
Load More Replies...Reminds me of the old time ingredients of Coca-Cola and 7-up!!! They had all the good stuff back then/s
The amount of c*****e in Coca-Cola has been greatly exaggerated. And it wasn't even really c*****e but ecogonine, a precursor to c*****e. It was totally eliminated by 1930, and was never more than a trace amount.
Load More Replies...As an earlier commenter mused on this same stuff, "That is the definition of 'f*ck me up' juice!"
I remember years ago listening to an interview on the radio with historians who were digging up old 19th/early 20th century outhouse pits, which were usually used to dispose of garbage. One thing they mentioned was that, if they found bottles of tonic for teething pain, they would never find just one... because the active ingredient was opium.
I don't know when they changed it but in the 80's you could still get codeine otc you just had to sign for it. Terpinhydrate & Codeine Elixer. I was 18 and fubu lol.
You could also get paraegoric and parepectolin for diarrhea. Both had morphine and were OTC meds in the 80s,
Load More Replies...Meanwhile, I'm sitting here thinking about how horrible that must have tasted.
It probably did taste pretty odd, but unfortunately opium is a really good cough suppressant too. Back long ago when I was a kid I had croup and the specified stuff for that was something called "Stokes Expectorant." Can't get that any more, but it once had opium of some sort in it, along with something like pine tar. It was thick brown and effective, and I grew to rather like the flavor. Of course I only got small doses and in this case it never became an a*******n or anything. The bottle was empty some time in the 1950's, and that was the end of it anyway, though I did find a bottle of terpin hydrate with codeine in my grandmother's basement years later. Not Stokes, so down the drain it went! I'm guessing that the combination in the stuff above probably worked pretty well on coughs, but probably worked pretty well on consciousness too!
Load More Replies...You can still buy cough syrups with opiates. Probably not with chloroform, though…
You guys actually blurred 'd***s' from THE FOOD AND D***S ACT JUNE 30 1906?! Wth? Really!?
The scary part is, this is something that passed the requirements of the Pure Food & D**g Act of 1906. The stuff from before was really messed up. The origin of snake oil salesman.
Probably to cope with various ailments they had no medical help for.
Do any UK pandas remember parents buying kaolin and morph over the counter from the chemist?
Only if there were no opiates available. Or extracts from coca leaves.

Of course they did. It was touted as a wonderful cure, with witnesses exclaiming how it cured them. Who would doubt them?
Contact Area Between Train Wheel And Rail
The train wheels are slightly conical (3 degrees) to allow turning without having a differential between the wheels and it also keeps the train on tracks because of the forces that apply on the conical wheel.
