Our brains are naturally curious things. But no matter whether we like it or not, they usually crave finding out some really weird stuff. Instead of loving that lonely book you promised yourself to read in January, or enjoying the history paper for tomorrow’s class, they wander mysterious ways.

If it was their choice, trust me, our brains would love to find out what will happen to a spoon after years of stirring the same soup or if you put a marker in a hot oven, or if you leave a banana for months to sit on an office table before you leave for quarantine… Call it odd, random, irrelevant, but that doesn't change the fact that we secretly love learning all the what ifs, especially the most absurd ones.

In order to save you from odd looks and the potential dangers some of these experiments could bring, Bored Panda has compiled a whole bunch of photos that perfectly illustrate our lives—full of what ifs and I told yous.

The artichoke is part of the thistle family, the national flower of Scotland. Oh, and I said it the way Sean Connery would.

My parents used to keep a decorative artichoke that looked like this in their garden, but the neighbor's gardener uprooted it and threw it away because he thought it was a thistle lol

When you think of it, life is really just a big turn of the wheel. No matter how much we’d like to think we own it, things usually go totally at random. The same is true for accidents. Some are mildly interesting and make us go "wow," like this blossoming purple head of artichoke which wasn’t eaten right away, or this forgotten bag of grass seeds that seeded out.

On very rare occasions, such unintentional and totally unexpected "accidents" become much more than amusing pics that end up on your camera roll. We owe a debt to some of the most important discoveries of our lives, like Teflon, nylon, x-rays, penicillin, safety glass, and many more.

When you think about life in this way, we all depend on random chance. No matter how much we feast on horoscopes, what a fortune teller would say, or how much we believe everything’s in our control, we'd like to think we make decisions about things.

In this article on the neuroscience of chance, writer Michael Shermer comes to the conclusion that extraordinary events do not always require extraordinary causes. “Given enough time, they can happen by chance.”

Even if such a claim demystifies the magic of human power, free will, and hard work, it can also alleviate our heartaches when things go against the plan. If something bad happens, we tend to blame our ill decisions, but realizing that chance plays a vital role in any accident too can be liberating.

BS. Coconut water is only in green coconut, it becomes the meat as the fruit matures, that's the endosperm of a mature coconut. Even if it wasn't fully mature, the amount of liquid in this stage would be minimal. They filled with water before freezing.

This is because the phone is not a camera. It simply saves what it's looking at. You don't expose a film with the phone. So in this case, the phone processed the image left to right, and the kid managed to open its eyes before it reached the reflection.

well... the same thing would happen on a camera, depending on the shutter type. It has nothing to do with exposing the negative versus the sensor.

Because the digital sensor "taking" the picture doesn't read the entire "picture" at once but rather doing it line by line. In this case the orientation of the digital camera made it read it from side to side (hard to say if left->right or right->left).

Meanwhile, the physicist Leonard Mlodinow of the California Institute of Technology suggests that “We can improve our skill at decision making and tame some of the biases that lead us to make poor judgments and poor choices…”

If we judged decisions by their potential outcomes rather than the particular result, we’d see how different the decision would appear to be.

Interestingly, our inability to both recognize or produce randomness can be our weakness. But taming it can be key to a peaceful mind where life itself can bring you the good and the bad when the time comes.

    Marco Conti
    Community Member

No need to encase it in resin. Just heat it again at the point of melting but then let it anneal in an kiln for the proper length of time. The inside will remain ccrackled (assuming you do it right) and the outside will melt again . The annealing relieves the stress that caused it to break in the first place.

The heat expansion and then the cold contraction will stress glass and cause it to crack. This marble wasn't thin enough to shatter, but the effect is still quite stunning.

Nah, not a hard freeze. This happens around me every time the temperature drops a couple degrees below freezing. Usually melts by the time the sun comes out. It is called Frost Beard, or Hair Ice. It forms when there is a specific fungus in the rotting wood. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hair_ice

NEVER. EVER. THROW WATER ON A GREASE FIRE. EVER!!! YOU LEARNED IN BASIC F*CKING SCIENCE THAT OIL AND WATER DO NOT MIX! ALWAYS /smother/ a grease fire! Sand, baking soda, a fire extinguisher (which every house should have in case of fires like this!), anything you can use to deprive the flames of oxygen before it gets out of control!

Correct! And idk if everyone knows this (I didn’t for many years). But baking soda and baking powder are not the same thing and the baking powder will make a fire worse.

...now I wanna see what happens when you throw a grease fire into a pool. I'm guessing spread across the top, burn itself out eventually. Maybe the chlorine or salt would have an effect depending on the kind of pool.

I've been involved in a chip pan fire. Me a friend and my girlfriend at the time. There was no fire extinguisher so my friend wanted to pick up the pan and throw it out into the garden, NO! YOU'LL ONLY END UP SPILLING IT ON THE FLOOR! Fortunately, my girlfriend, who was the obviously the most sensible, doused a tea towel in water, DRAINED AS MUCH WATER AS POSSIBLE OUT OF THE TOWEL WITH HER HANDS, THEREFORE JUST MAKING IT ONLY SLIGHTLY DAMP, and put it over the pan, extinguishing the fire. BUT LEAVE IT COVERED. I've learnt from that and now have a fire extinguisher in my kitchen. Also, I do like home-made chips, BUT NEVER FILL YOUR PAN MORE THAN A THIRD FULL. NEVER.

This used to be the recommendation of course. However, the UK Fire Brigade no longer endorses the use of the damp tea towel under any circumstances. If there is no proper fire extinguisher or blanket the advice is to simply get out and call for help. I am glad this worked for you though and that you now have the proper equipment. I too had a pan fire and that year everyone got fire blankets and extinguishers for presents!!

This happens so often at the Fountain outside Debenhams in Portsmouth city centre (U.K.) that it has been fenced off. It’s funny once and then after that it gets tiresome and has ruined what was a nice place to sit and chat during lunch breaks or to meet friends before going off for coffee.

Just guestimating but the turbines probably decrease the pressure downdraft which will cause a joulethompson cooling effect, dropping the temp just below the cloud point of the air. Climate change in action!

Most of them will, yes. The pop comes from the moisture in the seed heating up and creating steam, which causes the starch to "pop" out of the seed casing.

My guess is that seeds are very high value food and packets could have mites, weevils, or the like. Not a big deal to birds, who'd eat them, but not what you want in your home?

My little brother wanted to do a little scientific experiment... he put yellow food coloring in my lily of the valley's water. It gave the flowers beautiful regular yellow stripes! It was like, 10 years ago, and I wanted to offer these flowers to a lady I knew. I couldn't choose between blaming him or admiring him for this amazing result!

We did this in science in school. Our teacher (who obviously had done it many times before) came in with a few multi coloured roses. She got long stemmed white roses and split the stem in quarters and put each part of the stems in a test tube one of red food colouring one of yellow one of green and one of blue. The results were beautiful. Try it. It's a great science experiment to do, especially with children.

Ah, yes. The boarding tends to be very flexible and can form bubbles in the paint if water is spilled and not cleaned up, hence, the warped look. I don't recommend playing on that court, though. If any of those bubbles were to burst, you would have a very loud bang, as though someone were shot, and you will be creating an entire flood. Or, on this case, another one.

This isn't caused by them "not being trimmed", it's a natural response at the end of their life, which can be accelerated by extra dry or hot conditions. They're going to seed (also known as bolting). While you can try and hold it back by cutting off the flower stalk, it won't work long term.

That's a silver spoon, and consequently tarnished over time. It's not an indication that it isn't washed. The bend at the end is because the silver, which is relatively soft, has also deformed over time due to the repeated stresses of stirring. It's also her favourite spoon, and she doesn't have to answer to anyone.

Bake a vinyl record in the oven on top of an upside-down metal bowl at 200 degrees for 5 minutes, then you can shape it into a bowl. it will be warm but not hot, but the metal bowl will be scalding.

Not sure if they mean their physical left eye, which has somehow rendered it immune to the camera's red eye effect, or the left eye in the picture.

The left eye is immune to the camera's red eye effect because it is partially blind. The retina is damaged and not fully vascularized, thus does not have enough blood supply to reflect red.

I have a really bad long joke based kinda on blindness that this made me think of. “Two friends are hanging out and walking their dogs, a Dalmatian and a Chihuahua. They get to a restaurant and decide to grab a bite to eat, but they see a sign forbidding dogs inside. The guy with the Dalmatian says, “Follow my lead.” He puts on sunglasses and goes inside. The manager says, “Hey, no dogs!” The guy says, “I’m blind, this is my seeing eye dog.” “A Dalmatian?” “Yeah, they use them now.” The second guy, seeing this performance, pulls on his sunglasses and walks inside. “Hey pal, no dogs.” “I’m blind, and this is my seeing eye dog.” “A Chihuahua?!?!” The Chihuahua owner responds with Oscar worthy incredulousness. “What? They gave me a Chihuahua?”

i am blind in one eye and when someone takes a photo of me with the flash on, the blind eye is green in the photo since the optical nerve in the blind eye is scarred.

Having only one eye appear red in a photo usually means only one of your subject's eyes (the one that appears red) was staring directly at the camera lens, while the other eye was positioned at a slightly different angle. Rarely, red eye in only one eye may indicate an eye disease such as a tumour or cataract. Another possibility is strabismus, which is a misalignment of the eyes. If you or a family member consistently have only one eye that appears red in photos, consult your optician.

My nextdoor neighbor almost burned his house down this way. The guy thought the charcoal was ok to throw out like he'd done 1000 times before because it had been 24 hours since they were used. There was an ember in there somewhere and his trashcan looked pretty similar to this. The ill advised thing he did: the can was in his garage! Luckily it was found when it was only a lot of smoke and not a fire. He has since bought a small metal can with a lid and put it outside.

There was trend in the UK (about 40 years ago’ish) to put empty crisp packets into a very low oven on a baking tray. This would make them reduce considerably in size and become hard. They were then used as keyrings.

Fermentation turns sugar into alcohol and what is still in there is removed during destillation. All the sugar in a bottle like that is added later and in no way from the original fruit.

Not all that interesting. This happens to lots of liquids (and solids) if left alone for long enough. The oily bits and watery bits will seperate Like peanut butter. If you don't use it for a while (not even that long, just a couple weeks) the oil will be on top of the rest
