50 “Mind-Blowing Facts” That Are Better Than Watching The News (New Pics)
There is so much information out there, it often feels like our brains can hardly process it all. In fact, there is some argument to be made that we really can’t. Nice one, could have made more of an effort with the costume though
There is more than one way to show intelligence. Thanks Dave.
I think society succeeds best when average people can live comfortably - with regular jobs and affordable housing, food, transportation, healthcare, and education.
I always wanted to do that. Interview people and just go with the quirkiest. Thanks Dave!
But AFAIK court jesters were the only court staff who were allowed to be (indeed, expected to be) disrespectful to the rulers. They could tell the truth to people who were above the law and never normally questioned or argued with. They provided light relief and honest advice.
Triboulet has a few stories like that about him. At one point, he smacked King Francis on the backside and the king threatened him with death unless he could come up with an apology more offensive than the butt-smacking. Triboulet responded "I'm so sorry, Your Majesty, but I didn't recognize you. I mistook you for the Queen."
I’m surprised he didn’t get run through on the spot for the audacity
King missed a chance to bring out a ax and call it ( old age ):-)
Preparation for a trivia competition is a strange mix of memory training, curiosity, and strategy. There may seem to be those who naturally excel at remembering insignificant facts, but the truth is that better trivia players generally build up their knowledge over time through often deliberate efforts. To prepare, it works best to treat trivia like any other game: you practice, learn habits, and train your mind to retrieve information quickly under stress.
One of the best ways to put yourself in the shape of a trivia player is to soak yourself in lists of fun facts. They might seem trivial to start with, like the fact that octopuses have three hearts or that honey doesn't rot, but these little morsels of fact are exactly the kind of thing that comes up on quizzes. Trivia questions rather favor broad, shallow knowledge, so mastering facts from a wide range of subjects, history, science, popular culture, geography, literature, sets you in good stead.

As much as I hate to lose my 15 year old cat Tiger, I hope he goes before me. Because, 5 1/2 years after Mom's death he has fully "imprinted" on to me. It took myself and my other 2 cats at the time Tux and Romy (RIP to both) to keep him alive. Now, it's just the 2 of us and he didn't even handle it well and struggled the times that I've been hospitalized since then. The 4 Vets that he's seen in the time since Mom died, have a combined experience of 170 years have all said the same thing, it's NOT common for animals to "fully imprint" on more than one human in their lifetime. Research "Animal Imprinting" and you'll understand what I'm talking about when I say it's a "unique" experience. For ALL pet owners and it doesn't matter what type of animal it is and it implies to EVERYTHING under the sun, please remember that it's something special and love and bond with your pet as much as they love and want to bond with you.
Stupid cat couldn't even manage a pair of socks, a Nintendo game, or a night at Vegas? Bah.
George Westinghouse did something very similar with his planned community of Wilmerding, PA. "The worker houses were outfitted with running water, electricity, gas, and often space for small gardens. Homeownership was facilitated through periodic salary deductions. There was a pension and an insurance system. Factories were well-lit, ventilated, and were outfitted with medical facilities and personnel for treating injuries."
Too bad many corps don't see the advantages of having happy employees. Happy employees mean better performance, etc which can translate into more success for all.
What is it about chocolate companies?? In the UK it was common for them to do this but I thought that was because they were frequently run by Quakers. Having googled Hershey was Mennonite so I suspect it comes from a similar religious attitude. We need more of this type of religion and less of the prosperity gospel/evangelical hate everyone not like you rubbish.
Yep, or any of the Quaker towns in the Uk (e.g. Port Sunlight). But that's a good thing, right? Wish more organisations would copy this.
Load More Replies...Henry Ford paid his employees well b/c they needed to be able to buy his cars. Other than that he was a shite person AND a N**i
How good Ford's pay was has been exaggerated. It was not "$5 for a day's work" (a good sum back then) as we always hear. It was "$5 for an exceptional day's work".
Load More Replies...Hershey Park in the town of Hershey, Pennsylvania is still known as one of the better amusement parks for all but those who are intense thrill-seekers. It's one of four amusement parks in Pennsylvania commonly ranked in the top 10 or 20 in the nation.
Hershey is a wonderful little place. Haven't been in forever (no longer live out that way), but at least as of 2008ish, they had the best small-town zoo I've ever been to. And of course if you're really into death by chocolate...
Not to be a downer, but factory towns aren't feel-good stories. Advanced amenities are great, but "housing for employees" inherently means if you lose your job you're also going to be homeless. It's a method of control, like union-busting or taking employees' travel documents.
DE Ray: you have a point, but some factory towns weren't just cynical exercises in control. Some employers were genuinely trying to provide a better environment for their workers than had previously existed without any obvious (pay attention to that word...) cynical motive at all. E.g., https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_Sunlight and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bournville.
Load More Replies...In France the chocolate company Menier built à whole town for their workers in Noisiel. Houses, school, clinic. When I met my husband, he was working (office work) in that factory. The houses had long been sold, and the company had been bought by the UK Rowntree-Mackintosh, but they still made Menier chocolate, among other things like Quality Street chocolates (yum!). Later, the site was bought by Nestlé, and became their French HQ, after à thorough refurbishing of the old factory, which had some outstanding architecture, including à building conceived by Eiffel himself (or maybe one of his pupils).
Nestlé has now moved out, and the fate of the site is still undetermined, but two of the buildings at least are listed, and can't be demolished.
Load More Replies...That is the real secret to success in business and it doesn't require selling your soul. In fact, it probably guarantees that you have one to the end. Capitalists who forget this may be able to make a lot of money, but if they didn't share that with the people who helped them make that money, when they died, they died without a soul. Who knows what comes afterward in that case.
An number of comedians have similar experiences. There is a joke that doesn't translate well, or doesn't resonate with the audience. They don't get the joke, but they laugh because they know a joke has been told, and it's the right thing to laugh.
LOL! I've experienced that on a one-to-one basis with some Asian female friends. I was shocked to find one Korean-American woman only moved to the U.S. while she was in high school and did not actually get any of my jokes making 80s references. "Everybody else seemed to think you were funny, and the jokes I did (making no such archaic references) get were funny...."
Load More Replies...My best girl friend speaks English as a 2nd (or 3rd,4th) language and often doesn't 'get' my jokes. Sometimes frustrating because I'm a stand up comedienne.
Apparently, Trump is significantly more popular in Japan than most other countries - because the translators refuse to translate the horrible things he says.
Get translators who will say precisely what he says.
Load More Replies...Fun facts lists also teach you how trivia questions are structured. You start to notice what kind of facts always seem to cycle back in: capitals, record holders, firsts, award winners, dates of notable events. The more lists you do, the more your brain starts to make connections. For instance, if you know Marie Curie won two Nobel Prizes, that tidbit might enable you to answer a follow-up question about scientists, physics, or pioneering women.
To not leave us hanging, Talero was found alive still protecting the body from rescuers. The Family's car had broken down and Taleros owner walked to find help but got disoriented and froze to death. Family was found alive and were fine also.
If I was dead and my cats were without food I'd WANT them to eat me.
Load More Replies...I tried to slow blink back at him, but I'm afraid I've done it wrong and inadvertently insulted him...
Yea, I’m not sure about this. Maybe it’s just boredom because I saw a wild mountain lion slow blink at me once. Other than definitely not seeing me as any kind of threat, I don’t think he thought much of me, one way or the other.
I'm almost always sitting "Indian style" or I'll lay on my left side. (I know...Not PC) especially when I'm on my bed. If I'm sitting, then I'll c**k my head to the right and slow blink twice, pause and the slow blink again, all while I'm talking to him and using his name. It always its up with head butts and nuzzles, then laying in my lap for pets. If I'm on my side, head butts, nuzzles and he curls up under my neck for cuddles and pets. Tigey only weighs 7.5 to 8 lbs, so I all him my "cuddle bug" for a reason. Dust Bunny, who is technically my roommates cats, I swear to god that he's part dog. It doesn't matter if I'm asleep or awake, he wants to lick my face and neck, so he's the reason that I keep a package of wet wipes next to my bed on my nightstand. Dust Bunny is 3 years old and my cat in everyway that matters, I just force my roommates to take him to the Vet when needed and foot the bill for it, since I'm on a fixed income and would do it if I could pay for it.
I knew a person who was tidying up his life, and getting ready to bring it to a close. The only reason he didn't was he couldn't find anyone to take care of his cat. He stayed alive to look after his cat, and in time, his mental health improved hugely.
Even if you're not to that point a pet can be vital. When my father was in hospital I was having to make a very long trip every day or every other day to visit him and I already have Chronic Fatigue and if it was just me when I got home I would have collapsed on the couch until it was time to drag myself to bed. But the dog needed to eat, so while I was in the kitchen I would make myself something and the dog needed to be walked and then taken out before bed to pee.... On the days I wasn't visiting I might have just stayed in bed all day because of how I felt but again, the dog needed to be let out and walked and fed.... That little muppet really kept me going.
Load More Replies...Honestly, my cats have saved me from s*****e more than once simply by reminding me that they need me 🙏❤️🐈⬛
Now we need a study on how it affects the cat's levels of stress and anxiety ^^
Cats love petting, but their nervous systems are very sensitive, so sometimes they get over-stimulated. I could always tell when mine was because her tail would start lashing. At that point I would sit still and hide my hands, because otherwise she would attack them.
Load More Replies...Flashcards and quiz apps are helpful, but one of the things that makes fun fact lists so powerful is that they're generally going to be fun. I.e., you're more likely to remember it because you laughed or were surprised. Weird facts, like the fact that wombat poo is cube-shaped, stay with you because they're just so weird. And when you're racing, the facts that stick are the facts that score you points.
I do that all the time. Whenever my doorbell rings, I assume it's an online purchase of some sort. I usually just yell "Thank You!" Confused the hell out of my neighbor.
Japanese doesn't have different singular and plural words.
Load More Replies...I think all social animals understand the concept of unfairness. E.g. in the horse/pony herds a member behaving bad is excluded as punisment. Being alone is deadly, so they do their best to be allowed back in. Unfortunately they do not understand the concept of being sold. They only understand that zhey did nothing wrong, but got separated from their friends and safety, and find themselves all alone on unknown territory. Lots of buyrs don't give them time to mourn and learn to cope with the new situation. They get angry, because "this is not the horse we bought". Ponies are the worst off, because parents buy it as toy for their children and do not want a sad animal, so it gets sold quickly. This is why ponies have a "difficult" character, they know not to trust anybody and that they have to fight on their own.
Monkeys do too, e.g. https://archive.is/20230511175653/https://www.washingtonpost.com/wellness/2023/05/11/monkeys-humans-fairness-inequity-study/
Weird, I always thought you were a schnitzel.
Load More Replies...Cows also moo in different regional accents, so a cow mooing in Somerset has a different moo than a Yorkshire cow.
Of course, just like anyone else. Other animals feel the same way we do.
My best friend is a cow. She's lovely, but it's a small apartments and I'm up to my knees in dung. (Hmmm - will Panda censor dúng like they censor everything else?)
It's also a good idea to focus your study on areas where you have less knowledge. If you're a sports fan, that's great, but don't skip areas such as art, opera, or American presidents because they are dull. Fun fact lists are a great way to dip your toes in areas that you don't know as well without diving into a big textbook. Over time, you'll accumulate enough of a base so you'll be okay when the host brings out a category that used to be your worst.
Yes, this is financed by taxes. There are several countries where happy citizens and giving children a good start in life are seen as an important asset for the stability and future of a country.
And then you have other countries where parents are demonised, parental leave is a joke, and the term 'crótch-goblins' is thrown around. A society that hates children is a sad society indeed.
Load More Replies...This is several countries... For instance in Canada we can take 12-18 months and parents can split that time. Jobs are protected during this time and we are entitled to any promotions that would likely occur during this period as well. Any country that thinks parents should leave their children after 6-12 weeks is a joke.
The political faction in the US who would most vehemently oppose this is the one that calls itself "pro-life".
In my country U can have 3 years parental leave. And I had all 3 years.
These leaves are not only for parents, they are for their newborn children, who deserve all the attention they can get. This should be mandatory everywhere, poor babies if not.
Its per child, not per parent. The parents can choose how to split it. There's a lot of data indicating that it has benefits not only for the baby and family, but also for the employer. There's greater employee loyalty, so staff are more likely to stay with an employer that gives them parental leave, which reduces staff turnover, improves efficiency, and reduces training costs. Companies with generous parental leave get better feedback and reputations, so attract better quality workers. They are also known to have fewer staff going off on sick leave. In general, the additional cost of parental leave is very easily outweighed by the benefits.
Load More Replies...Had they just payed the claim we would not even know this happened. Public humiliation works sometimes, depends on how much they have to lose.
It's the same with the McDonalds lawsuit. While their PR machine did a good job convincing people it was frivolous, they wouldn't have needed to if they'd just paid her medical bills, which was all she was asking for. The huge damages were because the jury heard the evidence and decided not only were they negligent but a) they'd been warned multiple times and decided it was better business just to pay off complainants (and then decided not to even do that) and b) they were acting like complete d***s and needed to be punished.

I thought this was standard at all schools? Been kinda-sorta trying to wrangle a job at Baldwin-Wallace since my youngest is going to college in 2030...
Unfortunately it i not true at my university (a large public university in Alabama) -- children of faculty and staff still pay half-tuition.
Load More Replies...I taught in a private school. The children of administrators and teachers got free tuition. The children of the poorest paid employees - custodians and cafeteria workers - did not.
Cool, but lots of other schools have strong need-based financial aid (grant) programs to ensure that anyone who gets in can attend
Besides memorizing information, a portion of the effort in preparation for trivia is building recall speed and confidence. Game shows, online trivia games, or doing it with friends can be a means of mimicking competition pressure. Practice answering on your own or timed out loud to get used to thinking quickly. And if you answer incorrectly? That's okay. Even an incorrect response can teach you something for the next round.
Still salty this wasn't in the movie. Ron Howard missed out on an amazing sub plot
But then it wouldn't have been about Men and Men solving the hard problems. Women? Who are they?

***...dogs "likely" dream about their owners...*** (likely, here meaning that these researchers are just guessing. Maybe an educated guess, but a guess nevertheless.)
Load More Replies...How did they research this? Can they read dogs mind? Did they ask the dogs? I don't believe this one.
Ultimately, trivia is a question of taking an interest in curiosity. The more you take an interest in learning just for learning's sake, the better you'll do when it counts. So whether you're thumbing through a trivia book, reading a "Today I Learned" subreddit, or scrolling on some random fact-of-the-day app, you're keeping your mind sharp, and having fun doing it.

I often am perfectly healthy during school terms but get horribly sick during school holidays. Have always known why. (I'm a teacher.)
This happens to me nearly every weekend. The stress causes the migraines, but the irony is the headache occurs on the first day you try to rest - talk about feeling like the universe is punishing you.
I've always wondered what it would be like to get home from work on a Friday and have no worries about going back first thing Monday morning. And now I know. It's painful.

Load More Replies...I think it's adorable that humans use baby talk to talk to cats and they use kitten talk to talk to us. Makes me wonder about other species and aliens, if that ever happens.
"Meow"s are just cat baby-talk. They don't meow to other cats. Basically, cats think we're stupid so they use baby-talk to us. They may be right.
It always seemed obviously to me that barking and meowing are mostly juvenile activities in the wild. My Dad spent over 5 years taming a feral neighborhood cat. She was taken in and spayed and evaluated and we were told she could never live with humans. We were all afraid of her. She bit my Mom once for no reason and broke the skin. But my Dad tamed her. He died and I inherited her. She bonded to me and my son right away (but the Vet said she was still nearly completely feral). I only remember her making a noise once or twice. Once was to say sorry to me. (She loved to follow you and take swipes at your legs with her paw. She did it once when my legs were bare and I yelped. She let out a peep and rubbed up against me to apologize. She never swiped at me again.)
True. Feral cats don't meow (unless they live near humans and adapt to).
I have had many cats and as much as I would like this to be true, I have a hard time believing the scientific theory behind this.
Yah, similarly, I will never set foot on the Malariago-Lago golf course.
Load More Replies...Another fun fact, Washington was only a one-star general when actively commanding the Continental Army. John Adams, who succeeded him as president, ordered his promotion to lieutenant general (2 star), which is the highest military rank he held in life. Nearly 200 years later, Congress designated him "General of the Armies of the United States", which is the highest rank created for the US military.
When George III was told that Washington was just going back to his farm in 1783 after winning the revolution, he said "If he does that, then he's the greatest man who ever lived."
I suppose it would cause a lot of outraged howls if I mentioned how he tried to buy a commission in the British Army and was refused.
Why would there be a statue of Georgie-boy ? What did he ever do for them?
Washington was an officer in the British Army until the rebellion began, and served with some distinction in actions against the French. So he did some things for them - but I couldn't tell you why there's a statue.

Don't think it's talking about clinical depression, which is a terrible illness. Rather, it might help those with worry, self doubt, stress etc.

Load More Replies..."digestive health"!?!?!?! last time I has a mildly spicy noodles I had to life in the toilet for a fortnight!!!!!🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Always in moderation...too much for your digestive system will always wreak havoc, no matter how well you have adjusted to spicy food. I have eaten very spicy food my entire life, but still overdo it from time to time. Start slow and work your way up to whatever level is comfortable to you. My paternal grandmother thought black pepper was too hot. My maternal grandmother ate serrano chiles like candy. To each their own.
Load More Replies...High pain tolerance also makes someone practically immune to pepper spray. In training a classmate and I both just laughed at the instructor after being hosed down with riot grade OCS. The drawback is medical. When I'm asked by my doctor what my pain level is, I always underestimate it, it's caused me to be misdiagnosed a time or two.
I can't abide spicy foods. And I have a very low pain threshold. Never would have thought of a connection.
Interesting because I have a very high level of pain tolerance and can't stand spicy foods.
Surely anything you *enjoy* makes you feel good... it's kinda baked in to the definition
Not for some misophonics. Music and many sounds can create intense anxiety. My husband and I are misophonics. Even music we love will not relax us.

Load More Replies...Unpopular but necessary opinion. Experiences don't have to mean travelling across the globe. The planet is in enough trouble without yet more emissions from air travel, cruises are even worse, and every tourist destination is suffering from devastating ecological and social degradation.
There are so many amazing local or nearby experiences that people forget about, and local companies providing special experiences (in bigger cities). I live near the Rocky Mountains and have yet to find a more impressive experience than visiting them!
Load More Replies...Something I found during the Covid lockdowns was there was great joy to be had in planning holidays. Find out about an area. Yes it was a good time to find free/cheap at home entertainment! We started feeding the birds. So even when we finally got out and about we are avid bird watchers! My husband does not look like the type of guy you would expect to get so excited to see a nuthatch on our feeder for the first time 🥰

Ok, hear me out. I enjoy getting into a hobby, researching what it is the community likes and then buying an item from that hobby to experience it for myself. Traveling is fine, but I don't think it is the only way to generate experiences in life.
Yeah experiences can feel scary to spend money on because they feel temporary , whereas material possessions last for longer , yet experiences bring far greater happiness than material items
Having done quite a lot of travel, and had wonderful and memorable experiences, I agree.

That sucks! Once we were out on a road in mostly farm land next to a lake and at weird fork in the road a young man maybe 30 was stopped in the road. I was in our big truck but i'm always careful because people are maniacs since there's not a lot of traffic. He was taking a turtle to the lake side so I stayed behind him with my hazards on and my arm waving out the window so nobody would go flying around me. So nice to see good people.

I would have read my class the riot act for being gross. Caught some of my grade 3s knocking tent caterpillars off a swarm on a tree then killing them last month and I let them have it. I read the whole class the book "Hey, Little Ant" and journaled about it's message as a follow up.

80 million might not find you ugly but attractive might be another matter.
If 99% of those 80.000 people found you not ugly but also not attractive, still 800 would find you not ugly AND attractive :)

In my case, however, these 80 millions must be pretty f🔞cking drunk then...😅
You are the result of millions years of evolution. So you have all the means to be attractive in a way that would secure your procreation. You only need to find your way :)
They give Michelin stars to many things not just restaurants. Like you can go to a campground with three Michelin stars.
The Michelin Guide book was created for motorists to find hotels, garages, petrol suppliers and anything else they would need while on the road. The star system for hotels and restaurants grew out of this. Similarly motoring organisations like the AA and RAC in the UK and equivalents in other countries also produced an annual guide or handbook also containing maps and lots of other useful information.

The year after we arrived in Swaziland, it snowed in the high veldt, for the first time in 50 years. My dad refused to drive there just for me to play in the snow. I mean it was only a couple of hours.

I saw snow for the first time on 10 September 1981, when I was 12 years old. It used to snow in Jozi once every 20 years or so, although lately it's been more often due to climate change.
Lucky you! I celebrate any time I see snow in the high country because that’s where our water comes from. (Colorado)

Everything in Dubai is artificial, so this is kinda unsurprising
It's more a case of you're only allowed to live on Svalbard whilst your health permits. If you are in bad health, you will need to leave the island to seek medical help. There's also not the infrastructure to look after the elderly. If a person is not able to look after themselves, they are flown to Norway, and then repatriated. Similarly, there's not the infrastructure for births. When people are approaching their due date, they are flown to mainland Norway. They can return when the baby and mother are given permission to fly.
They are very serious about this law. Those who violate it get the death penalty .
Not decomposing sounds like a plus. Just prop me up like a scarecrow in the yard to greet people!
How much of that plastic waste is imported waste from other countries and how much is "domestic " waste?
China has a population of over a billion people and doesn't care about any environmental regulations. So what do you think?
Load More Replies...I don't remember the exact percentage, but a huge percentage of plastic in the ocean is also directly from the fishing industry. China, Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, and Thailand all heavily engage in ocean fishing - many would justifiably say overfishing.
By weight, about half of all plastic in the ocean is fishing gear. That's not as "impressive" as it sounds, though - a single net can weigh tens of thousands of pounds, equivalent to millions of plastic bags, bottles, and rings.
Load More Replies...So stupid that people in the US thinking ocean pollution is a good reason to not use plastic straws. We don't dump our domestic waste in the ocean. (Getting rid of plastic use in general is a good idea, but straws are probably one of the least effective places to start.)
When I was a kid, all the straws were made of paper. Why can't we do that now?

That is if you walk without being connected to your phone. So many people can't just walk and take in the scenery or be alone with their thoughts anymore.
There is a lovely pond on the property where my apartment building is located, with a paved path around it and benches at intervals. There is woods along one side, and a lawn then woods on the other. There are geese on the pond, and deer frequently visit the property. And still, so many people walk with their heads down, their focus on their phone.

That statistic is only going to get worse as more and more car models are only available in automatic. I'm keeping my old truck forever. It's manual and basically becoming theft-proof now!
Most electric cars don't have gear ratios you can change. Give it another 10-20 years, and most youngsters won't even know what a clutch is.
Load More Replies...I can drive a manual transmission car, but I don't see the point. I also know how to fill, light and snuff a whale oil lamp - they're in no way superior to electric lighting, and I don't mind that most people don't know how to use them.
More control and a lot more fun to drive imo. You just steer an automatic, you drive a standard.

He then added, dont let it run out of diesel, or it'll ruin the engine. I stalled out aboit 20 times in 2 miles, but I made it to the gas station
You were lucky that it was a big diesel. If it would be a small petrol Toyota, you could triple the number of stalls easily. In my country they teach new drivers on diesels. After passing my driver test, I've got myself a petrol toyota. For the first couple of weeks driving the thing was as if I had never driven a manual car before. With a small petrol you can't just lest go of the clutch, it will stall if no acceleration is provided at the same time.

"birthdays often lead to over-the-top celebrations with excessive consumption of alcohol. This can increase risky behaviour and poor decision-making, which can result in more accidents and drunk driving incidents. For some individuals grappling with terminal illnesses, the birthday serves as a significant milestone to aim for. This is incorrect. Treadmills were originally a way of harnessing human, or animal power. They could be used to grind grain, but also pump water etc. Centuries later, in 1818, and English, William Cubitt introduced them as a form of punishment. His treadmills were closer to 'an endless staircase'. Some of the treadmills were uses to mill grain, others did nothing. It was purely for punishment.
Much like the treadmills we have today 😂

True. I sold Toyotas and that's one of the things they liked us to tell people. Corollas are affordable and last forever. 3rd world ones are. The ones in the US have so many extra gadgets on them and environmental safety features they don't last any longer than a Ford.
I sold a 2007 Corolla two years ago. I just kept waiting for it to die. I had few maintenance costs, but it finally had a major problem and decided to trade it in. I got a 2020 Nissan Leaf EV. Best car overall that I've ever owned. I LOVE THAT CAR SO MUCH. I love having an EV with the go-cart-like accelerator/brake pedal. I love the lack of noise and vibration. F**k Trump for pulling back on funding for EV charging stations and incentives. Think how much quieter the world would be!
Physically, I am a close copy of my dad. But intellectually and emotionally I'm my mom.

But my personality is so much more like my mom's. Nature or nurture?
Anything rather than help with the house and the kids - my hubby was never like that. So as an average, some men are taking a lot, lot more time
I've had co workers whod get 7 hours in during a single 8 hour shift.
Further fact: this 2% of the world population is mostly made up of Chinese and Japanese people (not all Chinese or Japanese).
Minor correction and extension: Most of this 2%, around 80-95% is made up of Korean and Japanese people, though generally this gene is found in many East Asian countries, China and Vietnam being notable runner ups.

Yes and no - bacteria produce the smell by eating certain compounds excreted with sweat. Without those compounds, the bacteria either can't survive or can't produce the smell.

I've read ("The Economist") that there's a similar custom in Korea.
That’s interesting because they’re patriarchal cultures. Then there’s North Korea, ostensibly self-reliant with the government (eg the Kim dynasty) providing everything everyone needed. Enter Kim Jong Il and his excessive consumption of the resources, and the end of help from the USSR. During the atrocious famine that began in 1994 a grey market began to be tolerated because they needed to eat. The famine still comes roaring back and the factories are often idle. Still, men need to go to “work” so women produce food, There was a period of time when they were getting food aid from Sweden and the US, but IIRC, the government tried to conceal any indication that it was US aid and in some cases the donated food was sold. It was a challenge at times to let people eat it because men were fermenting it.

European houses tend to be built from stone, bricks and concrete, not sticks. This plays a significant factor in how much the homes heat up from solar gain. Also European homes tend to benefit far more from the shade of trees. In the summer the trees shade the homes and roads, making the towns and cities cooler. In winter, the leaves have gone, and the sun can shine as much as it wants.
Reason is that buildings in hot areas are build to keep the heat out. Size and location of windows, brick/stone/concrete walls, shutters and shades, ventilation options, trees and grass. Roofs often made from tiles in hot areas. My house is fairly new, from 1935. During the quite hot summers in the southeast of the Netherlands, the ground floor stays pleasantly cool. In the winter it is easy to heat.
Also, it's that the buildings are on average older and we are further North on average
Load More Replies...Here experts say three weeks. First week to decompress, second week to fully relax, third week you start to think about work again. So you had at least two weeks without work worries. Might depend on the duration of paid vacation you get. Four to six weeks is normal here, with five as average.
Yeah, this was probably an American study commissioned by big business to convince us to only take a week off :)
Load More Replies...This study makes no sense to me. If you go back to baseline within your first week regardless, then why not stay away as long as you can? I personally take 2 x 3 weeks a year and this is perfect.
They are right about the number of vacation days being 8. Except the 8 should be lying on its side.
I've noticed that no matter how long the vacation, whether a week or a month, on the last few days my mind says that I'm done and it's time to go home.
I’ve read that a way to reward yourself for working out is to give yourself something trivial, like a gold star. I don’t have that kind of calendar so I promised my cat I’d do 10 push ups and 10 sit ups every day and I do. I used to dance 5 times weekly, and sometimes more. I rode my bike rather than drive, when I could. Somehow a cancer diagnosis changed that, and there are no Nia classes near me now. Yesterday I finally used an Nia class online, so yay. I won’t try to break the dudes record although I used to do 100. I once belched 100 times, when I was about 8.
I read that it's been suggested the fire ants helped save her life by triggering increased adrenaline and other body responses. Don't know if it's true and don't care enough to search it out. She's a lucky lady regardless.
This was a class action suit. McD's had burned a dozen people with their coffee. It burned through the bottom of some cups or melted the tops so they weren't spill proof. The media sold this as a frivolous lawsuit but it is not at all.
McDonald's safety experts testified at the trial that they had told the company there was a problem and were ignored. Knowing reliably that there is a danger and doing nothing is the textbook definition of negligence.
Oh yeah, I was filling out a questionnaire recently and it asked my relationship status, but the only two options were Single or Married. I’ve had the same bf for 13 years and we’re not that keen on marriage so I was amused to announce to him that apparently we’re both single 😂

But who supports them and pay for food and bills? Maybe some of them work from home or have a remote job, but the others? How can they afford this lifestyle?
I hate to be tickled and have never been a snuggle fan, but I do "feel" for people more than most, especially when others aren't sensitive to their feelings. It's interesting to think there might be an association between that.
And "could be" more empathetic? I thought we were stating facts. Not theories.
I can vouch for this (I just ended a 5-year toxic (both ways) "friendship". It definitely increased those listed in the fact...)
Ummmm... I worked at McD's when I was in my early twenties and those things came in plastic bags, in paper boxes. I've changed/cleaned/hooked up the nozzle when a drink would run out thousands of times...
Nah. What makes the drinks at McDonald's different is the machines are calibrated to use double the syrup compared to standard fountain machines. Coca-Cola has an exclusive agreement with McDonald's allowing that, and other vendors caught with "miscalibrated" fountains can be cut off from carrying Coca-Cola products.
This is false, the real Coca would dissolve steel, as everybody knows... but I have at home old Coca-Cola syrup glass jars (filled with rum now)
Honestly, the Cola at McDonald's sucks in comparison to the store bought bottles - at least here in Germany
