The Bible is full of violence, incest, slavery, rape... I had a relative who made an album of "Bible songs for children" - I hadn't really thought about how violent it was until I listened and realized these were horrible stories. Nice beat but ugly messages.

But it's also true that, according to an article in _The Guardian_ in the “general and literary fiction” category, of the 1000 bestselling fiction titles in 2020, 75% of were by female authors. So there's likely to be a skew. Not germane to this, but other interesting tidbit: "A diversity survey, released in February by the UK Publishers Association, had 64% of the publishing workforce as female with women making up 78% of editorial, 83% of marketing and 92% of publicity." Don't even get me started on the class analysis... it's so unfashionable :)

Don't bring Gender into this. Look at the book list and see how many books are banned for men and women alike.

And if schools remove them at the behest of parents, that's up to them. But the Bible isn't banned as you can literally find it in any church or hotel or online or at bookstores or at Amazon and no, Books are not being banned.

They are not banned and yes you are a victim of propaganda. Think about it. Would you have heard of any of these authors or their books of they hadn't written adult content in the form of a kids book?

This graphic is misrepresenting the situation. These are not numbers of actual book bans but of book challenges, and even then, their numbers seem off. It's still an important issue, but this graphic isn't helping.

So porn is now allowed in California public schools, good job. And no I'm not saying all the books on this list are porn, but Government laws forcing schools to carry certain books is as bad as government not allowing certain books. This is a decision that should be in the hands of parents and the local school boards, not the state or federal governments.

Finally someone who gets it. These books aren't banned. By the definition they use for what a banned book is, ignoring content, Hustler is banned, Penthouse is banned, Penthouse Letters is banned and on. Books are reviewed often for two reasons, content and space. It's not some Orwellian plot, nor a prelude to a fascist dictatorship. Get a clue people.

A real ban might mean some of those things, but this graphic is equating book challenges (people trying to get books banned) with successful bans.

As a librarian, you should have a better grasp on the word banned.

The difference is the outrage generated by whatever special-interest group feels affected. The word "ban" plays well in focus groups.
