Studying history helps us understand how past events have shaped the present. We not only learn about ourselves and how we came to be but also develop the ability to avoid mistakes and create better paths for our societies.
So, join us in taking a look at the Twitter account 'Historic Vids.' It shares daily lessons supplemented with vibrant images that perfectly illustrate them. Whether it's a secret photo of Stalin dealing with the news that Nazis invaded the Soviet Union or a portrait of a regular family during the Spanish flu, they will definitely broaden your horizons.

Generally in society men are not expect to be happy. They’re expected to have a job, wife, kids et cetera provide, “be a man” but happy doesn’t come into the equation. Just look at the lack of mental support for men specifically. This goes to the just man up type of attitude which is prevalent. Thankfully, this is changing but not quick enough.
im relatively happy. i have what I call "points" in my life. they last for a couple months each, and they switch between "high points" and "low points". Ive been at a high point for the last month. it'll probably change sometime in the summer, but im doing good in my life for now.
In my experience at least, most people who ask if you are happy don't really want to know the real answer to that. So if you are going to ask someone, whether it's someone you just met or someone you have known for a while, be prepared to hear that the answer might be No.

I wanted to kick out my now-ex's aunt after we ended up in a topic of the Holodomor, cos I had just learned about it, as my mom was going through our family genealogy history on our Ukrainian side. She said it wasn't "that bad if it wasn't talked about" and "it wasn't a genocide" as "not enough people died". There are people who think it wasn't manmade. Makes me mad but their opinions don't change history nor do they cancel out the information that's out there. As long as you know the truth that's all that matters to you. There's so much information, commemoration and first hand accounts of these horrors, you'd think they'd know. It seems as though they think acknowledging how bad something is would be over-reacting, and over-reacting is ridiculous to them. Or they're in disbelief anyone in the world could be that cruel, or they think that there was some sort of nonsensical reason for something that bad to happen to a large group of targeted people.

The photo is "blind girl" taken in Hiroshima by Christer Strömholm. He took haunting pictures of the victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The close-up of a blind girl with scars on her face is surely the most well known of the series. Once seen, it is never forgotten. Like most of Strömholm’s photographs, this one seems unpolished and shadowed, since it was taken spontaneously and in the light available. Using the existing light was a central credo to him. Disturbingly, Strömholm confronts the viewer with a reality that is taboo and all too eagerly repressed. He lets the viewer experience unadorned human suffering without compromising the dignity of those he portrays. The girl stayed anonymous..The photo is often claimed to show the face of a girl blinded by the nuclear bomb. This seems unlikely, since the girl appears younger than 18 years. It is also possible that the photo was taken earlier but not published until 1963.

I'm not sure what's really the big deal about looking young and having a child. Looking/being young doesn't determine how good of a parent you are. Which in relevance to this lady, North American Indigenous people had every reason to worry. They were deemed as "unfit" parents, had their children apprehended at gun point. Maybe not at gun point, today, but child apprehension still disproportionately happens to the Indigenous and Metis people to this day, and parents are more heavily scrutinized of their abilities to parent than any other culture and race.

Need to go back to this today. One way to get the kids outside instead of glued to their PS5 in their bedrooms.
They close down. Which, considering it's the Netherlands, means you only go to school a week per year lol!

Anne was also the first British monarch, but she didn't have another coronation when Scotland and England(and Wales) joined. The first British coronation was in 1714, when the German Prince-Elector of Hanover, George I) was crowned King of Great Britain.
The door is 750 years old. The wood used to build it is, possibly, the oldest in England though.
The door has been scientifically dated. The tree that made it showed growth rings between 924 and 1030, and was felled somewhere around 1032, though exact felling date can't be determined. It's nearly 1000 years old as a door.

I have very clear memories of being stuck in the traffic shown in the top picture. Fortunately, I left Boston just before they started the Big Dig, and avoided the chaos. It was supposed to take 7 or 8 years, but took 15 years. It was also originally budgeted at $3 billion, but ended up cost $24.3 billion. Needless to say, it was terribly mismanaged. The end product is great though!
More cities in the US are doing this or planning to do this and I am all for it.
Most of the big dig was paid for by the rest of the country and poorly managed
Hated when we had to drive thru that tunnel to get to Boston in the early 1980's. They didn't really have room for emergency vehicles.
It's a lot of loot for their society to have buried and lost.

Legend has it that Frank secretly resented Dean Martin because Dean could just show up and smooooth out songs while Frank worked his asss off..... Dean Martin was LEAGUES better than Sinatra, imo, and less of an assshole...... though Frank did have his moments of going to bat for folks, especially Sammy....
I read somewhere that Dean Martin we always home for dinner at 6pm on the dot to eat with his family. Even when he left a woman waiting in the car in the driveway.

Load More Replies...this is when cultural practices cross into problematic territory. i’m pretty sure skill binding is no longer practiced. while we need to respect others’ beliefs and ways of life, practices that are harmful need to be addressed by several angles
It’s still practiced in some places, including (allegedly) Vanuatu. And you’re incorrect in your implication that skull binding is “harmful”: “…numerous studies have indicated that head binding has only negligible effects on the skull itself and that the inevitable modification of brain shape has no unfortunate side effects. As long as the volume of the brain is unchanged, its functioning seemingly remains unimpaired.”
Load More Replies...It would be interesting to see how it did affect intelligence. The brain still grows, but I imagine the differing area of the different parts of the brain would have some kind of impact (for better or worse).
It probably didn’t. But the area in brain that handles the empathy bits are in to the frontal lobe. With brain damages one can see symptoms from what area had the damage. But in this skull shaping case, brain just shift shape because of the child’s head is so flexible. So theoretically it shouldn’t be any damages because brain would still have same space.

"Canned specially for use at home and on outings"...................Mum, Dad, I'm gay, here have a coke.
That's a style known as a cone top. The very first beer cans had flat tops and bottoms but people were unfamiliar with them. This was a marketing move in that people were more familiar with the shape. Eventually people got used to more conventional shaped cans. The cone tops took up more space in a display, more material to make, and they didn't stack as well.
Not exactly. Filling flat-top beverage cans required new machinery or expensive modifications to equipment; cone top beverage cans were designed to be filled by already in-place bottling equipment.

The commemorative plaque for this is on the Boston side, at the top of the pedestrian ramp up to the bridge. If we are looking east we should see the Longfellow Bridge in the background, which we don't, so we are probably looking west, making this the Boston side. You are right, though, that he is definitely not on the bridge itself

He was convicted, sentenced to death, and executed by electric chair in June 1944, thus becoming the youngest American with an exact birth date confirmed to be sentenced to death and executed in the 20th century

Load More Replies..."Actress Brigitte Bardot drew attention when she was photographed wearing a bikini on the beach during the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Ursula Andress made a huge impact when she emerged from the surf wearing what is now an iconic bikini in the James Bond movie Dr. No (1962). The swimsuit was banned in Spain, Portugal and Italy, three countries neighboring France, as well as Belgium and Australia, and it remained prohibited in many US states. In less than four years since Franco's death in 1979, Spanish beaches and women had gone topless."
"The National Legion of Decency pressured Hollywood to keep bikinis from being featured in Hollywood movies. The Hays production code for US movies, introduced in 1930 but not strictly enforced until 1934, allowed two-piece gowns but prohibited navels on screen. All at Sea (a.k.a. Barnacle Bill) was allowed in the US in 1957 after all bikini-type clothes were removed from the film. The Girl in the Bikini was allowed in Kansas after all the bikini close ups were removed from the film in 1959."
At that time in Australia beach inspectors carried tape measures to measure the side seams of bikini bottoms. Saw a photo in newspaper archives while researching something else.
Yes, they had beach inspectors doing that in earlier years too, when one piece suits were worn. Seems so ridiculous now.
Load More Replies...My dad used to love to tell this story of how the Nazis marched into Paris in 1940, and when they got to the Louvre, there was nothing inside but the Winged Victory of Samothrace. After hearing this story a few times, I found myself in the Louvre, where they have a photo of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, crated up and being slid down a ramp so it could be taken away and hidden. When I saw Dad again I said "Dad, what the hell?" He said "I just figured it was too big to move!" Well they managed to get it from Greece to Paris in the 1860s, so why would it be a problem getting it into the countryside in 1940?

I don't understand the people making fun of their looks? It's just downright mean to do so... Only a couple are a little unfortunate looking but most of them just look like tired women?? Besides, I think at this point in time women (some at least) were for prohibition because their husbands would get abusive when drunk.

The folks inside thought he was dead, which is certainly not an unreasonable assumption under the circumstances, especially since his head kept striking the fuselage. A good part of why they continued to hang onto him (other than uncertainly about his being alive or dead) was because they were afraid that the body might hit something crucial if they let go.
