That's often the outcome, state or city comes along and declares eminent domain because they suddenly NEED a highway and rest stop in that exact spot that they never actually get around to building.

I'm also surprised she wasn't murdered in her bed and her deed stolen. Especially for a black person and a woman. Letting her enjoy the fruits of her labor were just not done back then.

I highly recommend the book "Killers of the flower moon" that tells the story of how white scumbags tried to take valuable land from native Americans and if that didn't work, they just straight up killed them. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Killers_of_the_Flower_Moon

Generally in society men are not expect to be happy. They’re expected to have a job, wife, kids et cetera provide, “be a man” but happy doesn’t come into the equation. Just look at the lack of mental support for men specifically. This goes to the just man up type of attitude which is prevalent. Thankfully, this is changing but not quick enough.

im relatively happy. i have what I call "points" in my life. they last for a couple months each, and they switch between "high points" and "low points". Ive been at a high point for the last month. it'll probably change sometime in the summer, but im doing good in my life for now.

In my experience at least, most people who ask if you are happy don't really want to know the real answer to that. So if you are going to ask someone, whether it's someone you just met or someone you have known for a while, be prepared to hear that the answer might be No.

Plus a lot of inhumane travesties. I wanted to kick out my now-ex's aunt after we ended up in a topic of the Holodomor, cos I had just learned about it, as my mom was going through our family genealogy history on our Ukrainian side. She said it wasn't "that bad if it wasn't talked about" and "it wasn't a genocide" as "not enough people died". There are people who think it wasn't manmade. Makes me mad but their opinions don't change history nor do they cancel out the information that's out there. As long as you know the truth that's all that matters to you. There's so much information, commemoration and first hand accounts of these horrors, you'd think they'd know. It seems as though they think acknowledging how bad something is would be over-reacting, and over-reacting is ridiculous to them. Or they're in disbelief anyone in the world could be that cruel, or they think that there was some sort of nonsensical reason for something that bad to happen to a large group of targeted people.

Manchester, UK, has a large Jewish community and some were survivors of the camps in Poland and Germany. They (as far as I know , now deceased) visited schools to explain what it was like and how to avoid it happening again. I just hope we can learn, at last, from history.

Salford Uni did a project in the 80's, where they went to old people with a tape machine and recorded their memories. My gran was all for it and got family and friends to recount their lives. Her brother who served as a concenious objector medic in WW1, recounted his time in France. We got a transcript from the uni, we all bawled our eyes out. He may not of born arms, but he saw sh1t that I hope my daughter never sees..

Some people may not conform to society's definition of 'good-looking', but that does not mean that we should automatically assume that they are monsters. Perhaps we should flip it on its head and assume that everyone who is heavily into their appearance are conceited. It certainly fits better than saying that 'ugly' people are cold and hostile.

This is entirely fake. The guy on the left looks nothing like William Steig who was a slender and clean cut, clean shaven man his whole life (he was a famous author, there are lots of photos of him). It's probably another wrestler or promoter. There's no proof that Shrek is based on Tillet or that the two had ever met. DreamWorks denies any connection.

There was a consideration, in the mid 00's, to officially make racism a mental illness, but the arguments against it were strong, such as it would absolve those committing hate crimes of responsibility and they could instead use the insanity plea.

Empathy is slso a learned behavior and without it a person is likely to succumb to an us-vrs-them mentality that we ARE born with. Don't hate the messenger.

Great spot lefty libra! You are remarkably observant! It looks a little spooky tbh. Plus, it's not in the recreation pic so maybe he died or maybe they didn't know he was there at all. I don't think it's a reflection because what surface inside the car would produce such an effect? I'd love to know who this chap was.

Is it not possible that there was a sixth person in the car, set back further from the exposure, probably on the other side of the car, than the five others in the shot, and therefore not getting as much light from the flash?

Awful. I think that before any world leader can declare war, they must first enrol their entire family in the armed forces ready for deployment. Only when they understand the cost of war to the people who will fight in it, can they be allowed to engage in it.

I've seen that look on the faces of families in Daguerrotype(sp) photos. They lived on farms that had no neighbors. Such a hollow, haunted look in their eyes, as if there was a scared animal inside. The suicide rate must have been incredible, for them as well as these soldiers.

There was a movie made in the early 70s, I think, about this. She was the only survivor and was infested with tsetse fly larva. These little nasties plant their eggs under the skin and slowly the larvae emerge as the tissue dies. At one point she found or was found by an indigenous tribe that helped remove some of these parasites. Her father was a research scientist in the jungle and that's where she was headed. They reunited and she spent a decent amount of time in the hospital while being treated for malnutrition, parasite infestations, etc. I remember seeing the movie a couple of times as a pre-teen in the late 70s so I could be misremembering some of the details.

During the 1918 Pandemic, the USA experimented with laws enforcing mask wearing. In NZ, all able bodied people were called up to help as hospital staff, drivers, community workers - everyone pitched in. Sad in 100 years how some communities have swung to such strong individualism, some individuals won't even wear masks

Did you know that the Romans used lime, volcanic ash and seawater to build their roads? The reason they have lasted so long and in such good condition is due to the seawater reaction with the lime and ash that causes continuous hardening.

There is one in Cologne, next to the "Römisch-Germanisches Museum". It has stayed in the condition as they found it, during excavation works for that museum. It hadn't been used and maintained for hundreds of years, it looks nothing like that.

Brewing beer was actually a serious enough thing to call off work for. It was the main beverage and drunk by all classes and ages. It was also the safest thing to drink at a time when many water sources could be unsafe and no modern water filters. Even small children drank beer. (And most beer was not heavily alcoholic - just enough to make it safe to drink.)

With what I know these radiators attract, I wouldn't be putting any food near these. Every apartment block I've lived in, seen, that has radiators, there's an issue with these wormy things that come from the holes where the pipes go. Perhaps it's because the rads and pipes are not well maintained. Not sure but the caretakers acknowledged the problem and say it's the nature of having water heat.

The photo is "blind girl" taken in Hiroshima by Christer Strömholm. He took haunting pictures of the victims of the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima. The close-up of a blind girl with scars on her face is surely the most well known of the series. Once seen, it is never forgotten. Like most of Strömholm’s photographs, this one seems unpolished and shadowed, since it was taken spontaneously and in the light available. Using the existing light was a central credo to him. Disturbingly, Strömholm confronts the viewer with a reality that is taboo and all too eagerly repressed. He lets the viewer experience unadorned human suffering without compromising the dignity of those he portrays. The girl stayed anonymous..The photo is often claimed to show the face of a girl blinded by the nuclear bomb. This seems unlikely, since the girl appears younger than 18 years. It is also possible that the photo was taken earlier but not published until 1963.

Very healthy diets these tribal people had. I'm sure it's the same with New Guinea tribes as well. (Look it up. It's very good for inducing insomnia and waking nightmares.) I think one of the rockerfellers was their "guest" too.

... if something induces insomnia, that means it causes insomnia. And as for the traditional diet of tribes in New Guinea, it included their ancestors and nearly caused the tribes' extinction due to Creutzfeldt–Jakob disease. Best to check with your friendly neighborhood anthropologist before making up stuff like that.

Yeah it's not unfeasible at all, if you have a long living relative and some young-ish parents in the family line. I, too, have a 4 generational photo of me, my dad, my granny and my daughter. I think my mom has a photo of me, my mom, her grandma and my daughter. I believe my great grandma passed away 5 years later. (My grandma... wasn't an integral part of the family when she abandoned her kids long ago.) I find multi-generational family photos neat. I find it grating when people look at them and all they can think of is "oh, they're a family of teen parents. They couldn't possibly have a good life." instead of the beauty and fascination of what it is, a generational family photo.

There is trouble in the outlying areas in Papua New Guinea. Some tribes have reverted to their traditional diet of cannibalism. Not all traditions are healthy.

It isn't the Korowai tribe's "traditional diet." They kill and eat men they believe have been killed and inhabited by a male witch they call a khakhua. It's not meant to be food. It doesn't sound like it's known whether they reverted to the practice or never stopped, but I'd guess it's the latter. shaving underarms is an american thing... and america is built on puritan values and messed up double standards for women. we are born with hair under our arms for a reason... why should we shave it? bc a man doesn't want to see it? well , how about don't look at it then?

May not be his mother. Sometimes I'll be holding a neice or a cousin and people will assume I'm a teen mom and give me dirty looks. It's fair to give the benefit of the doubt here.

I'm pushing 40. When I look back at my photos of me any time before 28 I look much younger, and people are shocked to learn I have an adult daughter. I'm not sure what's really the big deal about looking young and having a child. Looking/being young doesn't determine how good of a parent you are. Which in relevance to this lady, North American Indigenous people had every reason to worry. They were deemed as "unfit" parents, had their children apprehended at gun point. Maybe not at gun point, today, but child apprehension still disproportionately happens to the Indigenous and Metis people to this day, and parents are more heavily scrutinized of their abilities to parent than any other culture and race.

An often overlooked factoid about the Mount St. Helen's eruption is that it caused a massive tsunami in the lake near the volcano.

    Kathleen R.

StrangeOne --- Absolutely nobody overlooks that fact. Being that the lake was full of full grown trees for years afterward. Anyone who remembers the eruption, knows about the tsunami. I'm not sure how anyone who reads about the eruption after the fact, would be able to consistently overlook that fact when researching/learning about the eruption. -- The remains of those trees are STILL there now. A researcher at the University of Washington Tacoma studies the 'log mat' and it's movement through satellite images. You can see the pictures if you look up The floating logs of Spirit Lake.

48 y/o Robert Landsburg of Portland unfortunately wasn't so lucky, as he wasn't able to escape in time. Before the eruption caught up to him though, he was able to take multiple photos of the cataclysmic event, then shield his camera by putting it in his backpack and laying on top of it. modern cruise ships are abhorrent, wasteful things. i have never understood the appeal of going on a floating building with thousands of strangers and barely getting to see the ocean at all unless you're up on deck or have an outside-edge room. and let's not even get into the rapid spread of viruses on cruises.

Currently still living: Spanish-American born woman Maria Branyas, born 4 March 1907, aged 116 years, 82 days. English monarchs were crowned there from 1066, with Anne being the last English monarch. Anne was also the first British monarch, but she didn't have another coronation when Scotland and England(and Wales) joined. The first British coronation was in 1714, when the German Prince-Elector of Hanover, George I) was crowned King of Great Britain.

The door has been scientifically dated. The tree that made it showed growth rings between 924 and 1030, and was felled somewhere around 1032, though exact felling date can't be determined. It's nearly 1000 years old as a door.

I hid a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue in its box in a wall after remodeling my 1919 Craftsman. Dipped the top/neck several times in wax as well, just to be sure. 😋

Can you imagine how hot it would be inside those bubbles? Especially closer to the equato5? That's why bubble cars never really caught it. It got exceedingly hot in the bubble and taking it off was a pain, especially if the weather changed.

I have very clear memories of being stuck in the traffic shown in the top picture. Fortunately, I left Boston just before they started the Big Dig, and avoided the chaos. It was supposed to take 7 or 8 years, but took 15 years. It was also originally budgeted at $3 billion, but ended up cost $24.3 billion. Needless to say, it was terribly mismanaged. The end product is great though!

If that was actual bone growth around the spike then he survived for some time after injury. Can't speculate how long he could have lived or how mentally and physically challenged he would have been. If it is just museum repair job to hold spike in place, then it would mean he did not survive injury.

this is when cultural practices cross into problematic territory. i’m pretty sure skill binding is no longer practiced. while we need to respect others’ beliefs and ways of life, practices that are harmful need to be addressed by several angles

It’s still practiced in some places, including (allegedly) Vanuatu. And you’re incorrect in your implication that skull binding is “harmful”: “…numerous studies have indicated that head binding has only negligible effects on the skull itself and that the inevitable modification of brain shape has no unfortunate side effects. As long as the volume of the brain is unchanged, its functioning seemingly remains unimpaired.”

It would be interesting to see how it did affect intelligence. The brain still grows, but I imagine the differing area of the different parts of the brain would have some kind of impact (for better or worse).

It probably didn’t. But the area in brain that handles the empathy bits are in to the frontal lobe. With brain damages one can see symptoms from what area had the damage. But in this skull shaping case, brain just shift shape because of the child’s head is so flexible. So theoretically it shouldn’t be any damages because brain would still have same space.

That's a style known as a cone top. The very first beer cans had flat tops and bottoms but people were unfamiliar with them. This was a marketing move in that people were more familiar with the shape. Eventually people got used to more conventional shaped cans. The cone tops took up more space in a display, more material to make, and they didn't stack as well.

Not exactly. Filling flat-top beverage cans required new machinery or expensive modifications to equipment; cone top beverage cans were designed to be filled by already in-place bottling equipment.

The commemorative plaque for this is on the Boston side, at the top of the pedestrian ramp up to the bridge. If we are looking east we should see the Longfellow Bridge in the background, which we don't, so we are probably looking west, making this the Boston side. You are right, though, that he is definitely not on the bridge itself

Probably. The crackheads in Perth never sick and I remember one time having a bad cold come on so I dropped some acid and then after the trip, no cold symptoms, I think I just sweated it out. As you sweat when you do a lot of drugs. Morphine I had when I got set on fire and honestly it’s so strong I don’t remember much other than watching American dad on it while recovering and smoking weed cos the morphine didn’t let me eat 😆

George Junius Stinney Jr., who at the age of 14 was convicted, in a proceeding later vacated as an unfair trial, and executed, for the murders of two young girls in March 1944 — Betty June Binnicker, age 11, and Mary Emma Thames, age 7 — in his hometown of Alcolu, South Carolina. He was convicted, sentenced to death, and executed by electric chair in June 1944, thus becoming the youngest American with an exact birth date confirmed to be sentenced to death and executed in the 20th century

"Actress Brigitte Bardot drew attention when she was photographed wearing a bikini on the beach during the Cannes Film Festival in 1953. Ursula Andress made a huge impact when she emerged from the surf wearing what is now an iconic bikini in the James Bond movie Dr. No (1962). The swimsuit was banned in Spain, Portugal and Italy, three countries neighboring France, as well as Belgium and Australia, and it remained prohibited in many US states. In less than four years since Franco's death in 1979, Spanish beaches and women had gone topless."

"The National Legion of Decency pressured Hollywood to keep bikinis from being featured in Hollywood movies. The Hays production code for US movies, introduced in 1930 but not strictly enforced until 1934, allowed two-piece gowns but prohibited navels on screen. All at Sea (a.k.a. Barnacle Bill) was allowed in the US in 1957 after all bikini-type clothes were removed from the film. The Girl in the Bikini was allowed in Kansas after all the bikini close ups were removed from the film in 1959."

My dad used to love to tell this story of how the Nazis marched into Paris in 1940, and when they got to the Louvre, there was nothing inside but the Winged Victory of Samothrace. After hearing this story a few times, I found myself in the Louvre, where they have a photo of the Winged Victory of Samothrace, crated up and being slid down a ramp so it could be taken away and hidden. When I saw Dad again I said "Dad, what the hell?" He said "I just figured it was too big to move!" Well they managed to get it from Greece to Paris in the 1860s, so why would it be a problem getting it into the countryside in 1940?

I don't understand the people making fun of their looks? It's just downright mean to do so... Only a couple are a little unfortunate looking but most of them just look like tired women?? Besides, I think at this point in time women (some at least) were for prohibition because their husbands would get abusive when drunk.

Sleeping outside, even in winter, really is good for babies. They do sleep better

This is not weird and people still does it to this day. Babies sleep better outside and obviosly you keep an eye on them so they are comfortable.

The folks inside thought he was dead, which is certainly not an unreasonable assumption under the circumstances, especially since his head kept striking the fuselage. A good part of why they continued to hang onto him (other than uncertainly about his being alive or dead) was because they were afraid that the body might hit something crucial if they let go.

It's not a photo of the actual event, just a recreation from a TV show.

The show "Mayday" is called "Air Disasters" in America, and I highly recommend watching it! It's fascinating to see the recreations, but also incredibly sad to hear about all the lives lost.

I stumbled across this show and have watched almost every single episode. They are very informative and well reenacted. Also, very sad and tragic.

There's a lot missing here. They injected them with insulin and their recovery was rapid (I read that the story has been exaggerated but the basis of the story is true)

If this is the tweet I think it is, it's the first in a thread outlining how an entire ward of comatose diabetic children were woken up and saved when injected with animal insulin.
