Some folks choose to share theirs on the multi-million-member ‘Mildly Interesting’ online community on Reddit. We’ve collected some pictures of some of the most interesting doors to share with you. Scroll down to check them out. And remember, the world’s full of interesting sights, but we need to remember to slow down and look around.

Cool idea, even though I think it's sad to use them outside and letting them be destroyed by weather. But if this was the alternative to them being chipped and burned upp. 👍

Doors aren’t something many of us think about a lot in our day-to-day lives. Well, unless you happen to be an architect, interior designer, door salesperson, or work in the security field.

But when we stop and look around, we can notice a lot of interesting details. Doors, like other architectural features, can tell you a lot about the design philosophy that went into the building projects in your local area.

You might spot that all the buildings in your block have identical doors and focus on cheaper, utilitarian, minimalist designs. Or you might notice the opposite. The architectural features in your neighborhood might lean toward uniqueness and beauty. When you look at all of these details on a massive scale, you can tell a lot about the city’s character.

That's probably fairly rare. I've had doors with where the hinge pin had the sort of fancy brass k**b like shown, but the hinge itself is hidden when the door is closed so less need to decorated it compared to say the kn-ob (shout out to BP censorbot) or other visible fittings.

People tend to want to live surrounded by art and beauty. However, integrating these things into new buildings usually requires more time and a larger budget. Keeping that in mind, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that architects, city planners, and designers opt for budget-friendly project ideas. They might look blander, but they’re cheaper. Unfortunately, in many cases, the budget trumps beauty.

Cute. It's so well built and you can tell it was there when the terrazzo was put down so I'm guessing the door has a purpose (access hatch) and the sign was just added later as a joke.

What kind of door you want to have in place is going to vary wildly depending on where it is and what you hope it’ll accomplish. For instance, when considering what to do about your exterior door, generally, you want it to be super tough with high-quality locks. You want it to be secure to protect your family and possessions from potential break-ins.

LOL! Nat Geo folk are not bashful.

Of course, the core of your super-secure door can be thick and tough with an elaborate safety mechanism, but the exterior can still be artistic, playful, or elaborate—whatever fits the character of your home. However, there are cases when you might want to keep a low profile.

Say, if you’re a celebrity or a public figure. Then, you might intentionally choose blander elements for the exterior of your home, leaving all the artistry for the interior.

Regarding doors in the interior of the home, you may want to consider using sound-proof materials to give everyone some privacy in their own rooms.

That way, if someone’s dancing, playing the drums, or having a lively call with their friends, they’re not disturbing anyone else who might be sleeping, working, etc., elsewhere in the property. Obviously, in this case, it’s best to soundproof the walls and windows, too!

In public buildings, however, there might be different concerns aside from security or aesthetics. For instance, hospital staff might want doors to be made of materials that are easy to clean or resistant to microbial growth. They might also want the doors themselves to be made of see-through materials or have a small window in them so that it’s easier to keep an eye on patients.

A lot of older homes had a light connected to the basement light circuit to let people know the basement light was left on because they forgot or to let someone know another is down there. Quite handy when electricity (9-7 cents per kWh in 1920 which is about $1.14 to $1.46 in 2024. It’s about $0.17 kWh today) and lights were expensive. To run a single 60 Watt lightbulb would cost about today’s equivalent of $63 a year if run 2 hours a day. No wonder people of the era were adamant about turning off the light. https://www.bls.gov/regions/midwest/data/averageenergyprices_selectedareas_table.htm https://publishing.cdlib.org/ucpressebooks/view?docId=ft5v19n9w0&chunk.id=d0e933&toc.id=d0e933&brand=ucpress#:~:text=Across%20the%20country%2C%20in%20the,kilowatt%2Dhour%20(kwh). https://www.myamortizationchart.com/inflation-calculator/0.09/1920/ https://www.energysage.com/electricity/house-watts/how-many-watts-does-a-light-bulb-use/

Not only that, but a more open and see-through door design might help the patients feel like they’re not alone. If they constantly see people moving here and there, they might feel more connected and less isolated.

All of that being said, let’s not forget that purely utilitarian interior designs might not be the best fit for helping patients heal faster. Creating a warm, cozy, and inviting atmosphere can help them feel more at home and healthier, not like they’re desperately fighting for their lives.

In my experience, extremely thin doors like this usually cover retractable temporary partitions used to divide the room into smaller spaces. When not in use, they fold back into a sort of closet, and the skinny door tidies up the appearance. Not sure this is the case here. Despite the sign, I have trouble picturing that as any sort of usable restroom door.

It's probably a plumbing chase door. I'm between two bathrooms, you make the wall like 2 feet wide. Then a tiny door let's you get in and replace pipes later on.

You could just slide it open and pass through. A little kid might have a problem but an adult should be able to open it fairly easily. I've moved similar doors. In fact, the sliding doors on our barns and machine shed (farm) were a lot harder to open and close than this. The tracks were level but the doors were large and weighed hundreds of pounds.

Per Google, since I wanted to know: "Some London doors have knobs in the middle for symmetry and to make the door stronger. The k**b in the middle is also said to provide more security, with a crossbar across the width for support." "...the placement of door knobs in the middle is often due to comfortability factors, security, and visual appeal, particularly when considering some European-style locks and outward-facing doors.

My front door is also badly scratched, but the explanation is far less charming. It was caused by my former upstairs neighbour, who was in the habit of coming home so drunk he'd forget how a key works and be incapable of finding the keyhole with it. Fortunately he's moved down the block recently, which is an imperfect but appreciated improvement. At least we no longer share a front door, or a floor/ceiling (as on the nights he was able to eventually make it inside, instead of passing out in the porch, he'd drag himself up the stairs and then be crashing around above my head in the wee hours). I'll never be able to look at a scratched door without promptly assuming something must be very wrong.

They had a door like this at my last workplace. Same sign and everything, except it was indoors. Of course, after that I just HAD to find out what was on the other side. And on my last day, while I was on my break, I decided I was going to find out once and for all because damned if I was leaving without getting closure. The door was locked, but I found an entrance to a service tunnel elsewhere in the building which went clear around the edges of the space. We're talking cables and concrete walls and mysterious bits of discarded debris including a shopping trolley, and eerie silence and shadows. Not only that but when I followed it in the direction of the sealed door I found a catwalk above head height with a tunnel you'd have to crawl through (I didn't even try). And there was the inside of the door, which could indeed only be reached by a few steel rungs set into the wall. I'm at least 90% certain nobody ever disappeared never to be seen again.

It reminds me of the excerpt of the Terry Pratchett book Going Postal where Vetinari offers Moist Von Lipwick a choice. To become postmaster general or leave via a door. Moist gets up and opens the door to have a look before choosing and finds a huge pit directly behind the door.

When an entrance drops down like that, that's how you know your going to be trapped in a boss fight area and some other door will become available after you defeat them.

Not "used to be" near as I can tell. Appears to be a new install. Doorknob and pin plates appear to have the manufacturer plastic covers still on them.

we had such massiv doors at my old home too..As we repainted them,we found out they were hollow frames covered by a very thin and cheap wood The inner frame construction caused the weight wirh some metal inlays..but the doorframes were metal based/ or covered. It was a former american soldier appartment in Germamy, so I guess they had to make some improvisation through the years. Also each door had different width..

Is it a safe room? (like a panic room) Those are some impressive engagement bolts. Markings on plates and plastic on handle suggests this is a new install.

We have a flat door a bit like that only the bolts also go into the floor and ceiling. Also there were bars over the windows (those are now gone). Security overkill now, but many years ago there was a meth lab upstairs!

Good that the sign explains "Not an entrance" so people don't just try to wander in... 😉

well, again this is for code compliance / safety inspectors. It is easier to put up a sign for those sorts of people than it is to keep explaining / showing them the door is not functional.

Last time I saw a door that far up the wall, it was at the Winchester Mystery House. Open that sucker from the inside and you'd fall two storeys into the rose bushes.

I've seen doors like this where there was a railway siding that ran along the building which was later removed. A door that high up would let someone lean out to look in something like an open top gondola (short open top car) to see if it was being loaded properly and decide if they needed to move a new car in or something.

They had an old army surplus door - and used it.
