Tis Beautiful Stone Bridge
This is a Turnover bridge. Barges were used to transport goods around the country by way of the canals and these barges were pulled by horses. Sometimes it would be necessary for the horses to move to the opposite bank and these bridges allowed the horse to do so without having to unhitch them from the barge which would need to be moored while they swapped sides
A heads-up now, before you browse:. There are NO Japanese, Chinese or Oriental buildings in this entire post. Also missing are many amazing US architectural gems. I, for one, consider the main branch Manhattan, New York Public Library, to be an amazing work.
This Elegant Staircase That Leads Directly Into The Sea. Artatore, Croatia
I think I'll write a book that will end with "And then she walked downstairs, straight to the ocean". Any idea what I should write before? Not an expert here.
She proclaimed her undying love for him/her knowing a union so tenuous could never be possible. Their tears mingled as their bodies crashed together like the waves below yearning for what could never be realized. Then she walked downstairs, straight to the Sea. No expert either, just intrigued. Lol

Though we can’t mention the full name of the architecturally-inclined subreddit (internet censorship is the worst, believe us!), we can’t stress enough just how awesome the community really is.
It is chock-full of beauty, mind-bending ideas, and enough inspiration to get any and all artists out of any creative blocks that they might have. Seriously. If you’re having a bad day or feel that your imagination has run dry, just soak in all of the photos in this list. They’ll help. Oh, and if any of you Pandas are on the fence about studying architecture, this is the sign from the Universe that you were waiting for: do it!
Edinburgh, Scotland
They are amazing people! And Architect's obviously as well. I just Love this too!!❤️
Load More Replies...Love the outside, but would pay to see the door knobs, faucets, light switches, etc.
Hah hah, because it generally is. Scotland is an incredibly beautiful country and Edinburgh is such an amazing city with a lot of wonderful things to do from museums and great restaurants to attending a theatre performance and hiking Arthur's Seat. If you can ever make it during the holidays, Edinburgh's Hogmanay (New Year's) is a must see. There's fireworks, theatre performances, cheilidh dancing (traditional Scottish group dancing), torch parades, and the ocassional burning of a model Viking ship. Lots and lots of fire...have I mentioned fire?

I get why everyone is upset about the trees, but people in the apartaments in the lower stories are probably happy about having daylight. The trees are to close to the building to solve it differently. My grandma has the same problem - most of the window is just blocked.
Hopefully no flammable cladding involved. Major problems in the UK after Grenfell disaster, so many flats found to be covered in the same cheap flammable material and the leaseholders didn't know and can't afford to replace it.
Not in Germany, we're often stupid, but not with those things
Load More Replies...for people who don't know what that is (like me), here's a definition from Wikipedia: "Trompe-l'œil is an artistic term for the highly realistic optical illusion of three-dimensional space and objects on a two-dimensional surface. Trompe l'oeil, which is most often associated with painting, tricks the viewer into perceiving painted objects or spaces as real."
In my country very similar blocks - once part of east block, so it explains the similarity - during the 90's those underwent "humanisation" - by painting them different colours. Peach was a favourite at the time.

I’m sat writing this about 30 yards away from Scrivener’s, my flat is built in the same stone and is of a similar style. It’s a nice town 😀 To those who are asking, there’s a cellar and a loft, the angle of the photo makes the pitch look too shallow for a loft but it’s deceptive. There are 5 floors, you can’t advertise something like that in the U.K. if it’s not true. If you’ve ever drank Buxton water and paid Nestlé a stupid amount for a litre then visit Buxton and bottle it from our spring for free 😀
Thank you Gavin for the information. This is definitely on my list to visit.

If you plan on being an active and friendly member of the subreddit’s community, then you’ve got to commit to following the group’s rules. All of the rules help the sub’s mods focus on their preferred niche.

The Castle And Chapel On St Michael's Mount, A Tidal Island In Mount's Bay, Cornwall, England, Which Have Been The Home Of The St Aubyn Family Since Approximately 1650
Wow, stunning! Imagine sitting at one of those bay windows during a storm, being all cozy with a warm tea in the hand and a fire in the fireplace.
There are seven Mt St Michael church-fortresses in Europe, and they are all on a single line pointing towards Jerusalem. They are lined up so well, it took a curved, 3-D view of the world to recognize they were lined up.
Ya know whats amazing not only was this built by hands and not mordern machines but its been around for hundreds of years THRU storms and possible fires and wars man thus is cool!
Yes it is! you can walk across the causeway at low tide and get tea and cake in the cafe by the battlements!

As someone who lives near here I thought the same thing. It's always photographed from the path leading up to it that gets flooded at high tide. So nice to see this angle as it is one I have not seen before.
Load More Replies...A lot of the buildings and locations featured in this article look amazing, that’s true. But how many of them would make for a good home? Sure, it’s fascinating to explore an ancient castle with a regal library, but consider the practical aspects of living there.
How much time would you spend dusting and cleaning everything? What would you do about heating? What’s the commute situation like if you’ve got to show up to your office half the workweek? (Though if you’ve bought yourself a castle, we assume that travel expenses and work, in general, aren’t much of an issue!)

I love the architecture of the Natural History Museum. It's a temple to science and it shows that beauty, industry and intelligence can all work together. Also love that they put Darwin's statue on the stairs there.

Load More Replies...The long and short of it is that only you can tell if you’d love or loathe to live in a particular place. The most aesthetically pleasing buildings might be a pure headache to maintain. Similarly, a quirky historical home might steal your heart and make you want to settle down there.

150 Meter Aluminum Sea Serpent Skeleton Sculpture From Saint Brevin, France
It’s a cool sculpture, but the sea would look better without it: It ruins the view, just my opinion.
Would have been nice if it doubled as a pier or walkway.
Load More Replies...Nah. Aluminum will oxidize slowly, but -surprise surprise- aluminum oxide is very hard and resistant to corrosion (it's basically sapphire). This will stop further corrosion. Aluminum does not suffer from salty environment as much as steel, and has no impact on the marine biome as copper would. It's going to be ok.

Both, Mont Saint Michel from France and St Michael's mount for Cornwall are as beautiful as în the pictures, or even better. Love them both!
It's a heck of a walk up there, but well worth it! We had an excellent guide, totally worth going with her.
Love this place. Visited once almost 30 years ago and have never forgotten it.
The Sept of Baelor looks really lovely in the morning light.
A guided tour is worth the while; we learned — and saw! — so much of the Mont's history fom original small chapel and multiple additions to how supplies were raised on pallets using the power of "human hamster wheels" to it's use as a prison because of the inescapable nature of the tidal quicksands surrounding it.
Been there for 20 minutes. Crowded with other tourists. Never go there on summer 😬

Alas, many of our house-related dreams are limited by our wallets. Yours truly would love to have a literal castle. But all of the ones that I’ve got my eye out on are a wee bit out of my budget.

It’s not as pretty, but in Schenectady NY (Birthplace of GE) there is a HUGE GE sign outside the plant. At Christmas time, they change the white lights of it to red and green. I loved seeing that as a kid.

Built Roughly 1942 Years Ago The Colosseum At Regio III Isis Et Serapis Is An Architectural Icon Amongst Architectural Icons In The City Of Rome
As an American, I think the most surreal thing about visiting the Colosseum was seeing an ancient ruin right in the middle of a modern city. We just don't have anything like that in America. We do have some Native American ruins but not in the middle of modern cities.
Served as a quarry for some time. A lot of the outer walls were dismantled to build St. Peter's Cathedral in the 16th century.
Emperor Titus had the Colosseum flooded so that flat bottomed boats could engage in the shallow waters in replication of the battle between Athens and Syracuse. A small island was even created in the arena so that the sailors could land on it and start killing each other.
If the Colosseum and its events could now be brought back to “life” for one day imagine what the ticket prices would be.

The Colossal Proportions Of The Architecture At The Forum In Rome. If One Has Not Walked Along The Roman Forum, It Is Hard To Realize How Huge Everything Is. This Image Shows The Forum From The Palatine, With Visitors All Over The Place We Can Use For Scale
Or, if you go to Athens, the centre of that World ; if you go to China around 1000 years before this, they were way ahead of Europe, not forgetting Africa - have a peek at the Benin dynasties amongst others (also, Aztec / Inca in S America) .. lots of ancient worlds.
Load More Replies...i came over the Capitoline hill around those buildings on the far side of the picture....and Forum was laid out at my feet... i cried. this was my first international holiday. Europeans don't know how hard it is for a poor American to reach Europe when we live in landlocked states without major airports. it takes a lot. (at the time, i used a rare cash gift to get my plane tickets). Since then my financial outlook has improved considerably, but we in the US don't get to travel the way you'd necessarily think. Most young people are struggling and barely getting by, if they are on their own.
If you're going to play fast and loose with the scale markers, at the very least put the visitors in banana costumes.
Wow! You'd need at least a week to tour this in order to appreciate it!

I have seen this in person, quite humbling to be in the middle of such a grand place.
Actually where they filmed Thomas Crown Affair, instead of at the museum itself. The stairs play a big role visually in the film.

A Grocery Store Inside A 3rd Century Roman Imperial Palace In Croatia
As an American, this kind of thing blows my mind. The thought of shopping for my groceries in a Roman palace, casually brushing against 1700 year old columns while I pick out my veggies, is so cool!
Same here. Coming from Australia in the mid-90’s to travel around the UK and Ireland for a couple of months, I was bemused by how often I’d see things like signs in fast-food outlets pointing the way down to the Roman columns in the cellar below. I’ve read a lot more Roman and Romano-British history since then, and would love to retrace my steps knowing more about what I’m seeing.

A Modernized Take On A Tudor Style Home With A Slurry Finish Washed Over The Brick Facade Allowing The Black Doors, Windows And Roof To Provide Contrast. Designed By Scala Designs In Inglewood, Ca
This is missing the most defining element of Tudor style architecture, which is exposed half timber framing. It also lacks the ornamental chimney work, though admittedly it at least has no chimney. So it's a lovely house, but I'd lean towards Tudor-influenced, rather than modern Tudor.
I'd call it "somewhat Tudor". One of my favorite styles but this leaves me wanting.
This house creeps me out. I fell like it would finish me off and then put its own for sale sign out and wait for its next victim.

Hard nope from me, *especially* in California. Regardless of their building standards, I can still see this fella oozing down the mountain in an earthquake.
I'm guessing based on the name that its foundation is like a suspension bridge, so maybe anchored into the bedrock and not on the sliding mud. On another entry in this list, the house looked more like it was spanning a couple rocks rather than being perched on a hillside.

Load More Replies...Gorgeous buildings for sure, but many of these were built before there were "architects". Master builder, master craftsman, great artists. But to show a house from 1698 next to a modern structure, we can't compare "architects" because one didn't utilize one. The post needs to be curated better.
"The Roman builder Marcus Vitruvius Pollio is often cited as the first architect. As chief engineer for Roman rulers such as Emperor Augustus, Vitruvius documented building methods and acceptable styles to be used by governments. His three principles of architecture are used as models of what architecture should be even today." Just because they didn't call them architects (although, to be fair, the word architect comes from the Greek word for carpenter, so maybe they did) doesn't mean there were not men who were hired to build a building that didn't fall down.
