In some ways, the endless lockdowns have been freeing. We’re starting to care less about how we look, how we dress, and whether or not we’ve got make-up on. Well… some of us, anyway. Even though we might be spending more of our time at home than ever before, there are plenty of people who are addicted to social media going overboard with photo-editing their pics before posting them on Instagram because they want to feel validated or loved. People who stumble upon the heavily altered pics in their feeds can’t help but call them out by sharing them on the r/Instagramreality subreddit that has a whopping 917k members and even their very own ‘Reptilian Overlord’ (that’s the title that the head moderator goes by).
Upvote the photos that got you to pause with how over-edited they are and let us know your opinion about why people do this in the comments. Want to feel better about using just basic filters or nothing at all on your own photos? Read on for Bored Panda's interview with the head moderator of the subreddit. We also wanted to learn more about social media addiction, how the lockdowns are affecting our online activities, and when we should start worrying about the time we spend on the net, so we reached out to the UK Addiction Treatment Group. Nuno Albuquerque, the Head of Treatment for the UK Addiction Treatment Group, told us that social media addiction is a relatively new phenomenon that everyone is still learning about every single day. I understand the need some people feel to shame them but this is a much deeper issue that goes way beyond instagram models. Do you remember beauty pageants? They literally are based on rewarding teenage girls for their beauty. Yes, they do include other things like asking a question here and there and stuff but their faces and bodies need to be conventionally beautiful for them to even enter these pageants. Millions of people cheer on these pageants without realizing that they're extremely sexist and exclusive. On top of that, women are only considered beautiful with western centric features. Celebrities project a fake image of ageing gracefully when many of them have had surgical enhancements and botox. These instagrammers are young women who grew up in societies where being beautiful is more important than being kind, caring, productive, creative or empathetic. They grew up seeing that women with that particular kind of pretty look get ahead in life and are celebrated as strong, successful women.

The head moderator of the r/Instagramreality subreddit, Zaza9000, told Bored Panda that 2020 was "hard on all of us," so they try to keep the community easy to engage with and be a part of. This openness is one of the reasons why the subreddit is so popular. "Last year so many people have shared interesting stories from their personal lives and I really hope we can carry that into 2021."
According to the head moderator, there have been some shifts in how people approach editing their content. Recently, there's been more interest in video editing than photo editing, for instance. "Especially apps like Facetune2 and SNOW that allows you to edit your body and certain Instagram filters that can make your lips appear bigger and make your skin unrealistically perfect. Seeing them glitch in videos has been a really popular topic on the sub," they explained.
"For us non-influencer, regular people of course travel isn't always an option especially if it's just for a vacation away. Unfortunately, there have been a few influencers that don't care, to be blunt. Some of them feel like traveling and being on vacation is necessary and well-deserved even though people in the medical field, teachers, retail workers, etc. don't get to just jump on a jet and get away."

This is the first vaccinated person in the Netherlands, when her name came out there was no official image available so someone just ripped one from het Insta and later the other image was added which is a still from an interview, in reality she doesn't look like either image.

Hello. This is the first Dutch nurse Sanna Elkadiri who got vaccinated in the Netherlands. The first picture is just a random picture from instagram that got modified with a basic instagram filter to look younger. You know, the standard filter that just take a few clicks to take and many ordinary people have done for ‘fun and laughs’. The second picture is taken after caring for covid patients, which of many died. If you follow Dutch media, she represents herself as herself. Just normal looking. That is how she shows herself on television as a guest (remember she was the first one to receive the vaccine). Nowhere in the near does she deserves to get burned as her on Boredpanda. She is a lifesaver in daily life, and come one, many who have instagram have used a filter before? She is not a influencer who is pretending tobe someone or something else. Many newspapers who published the story used real pictures of her. Only one lazy newspaper, the parool, used the instagram picture.

"A person can be addicted to anything, but they are only suffering an addiction if whatever it is they are 'using' has taken over their lives, and that they as individuals have lost the power of choice, i.e. that they cannot, regardless of how much they want to, stop 'using'. This is the effect that addiction has, it robs the individual of the ability to stop. Even if that individual is aware of the negative physical, psychological, or financial consequences, they still cannot stop. It is essential to not use the word 'addiction' flippantly; if a person is addicted, then they are in need of professional help and support," Albuquerque, the Head of Treatment for the UKAT Group, explained to Bored Panda, highlighting that nobody should throw around the term 'addiction' without realizing the weight the word carries.
According to him, it's the Covid-19 lockdowns are making us spend more time on social media because of how much things have changed. It's not all doom and gloom with social media, however, we should be aware of how much its use affects us.
"We would say that it is more than likely that society as a whole spent more time on social media and other internet-based platforms during the Covid-19 lockdowns than before, simply because for many, their normal day to day life was turned upside down, or even stopped altogether, and so a lot of people found they had more spare time on their hands. Some people turned to social media during the lockdown to stay connected with others, which is really important and actually a healthy approach to take. Where it starts to negatively affect a person is when being on social media consumes them completely, and they no longer want to be present in their actual 'offline' day."

Bored Panda was also interested to understand where the line between a regular social media user and somebody who is addicted lies. Albuquerque's take on this is that even though this line is different for each individual, it's important to recognize whether or not the person has lost the power of choice.
"If the person cannot undertake their regular day to day routine without being on social media or needing to get back to being on social media, as in they have potentially developed not only a psychological desire to be online but also physical urges begin as well, then there could well be an addiction there," he went into detail.
"An unhealthy relationship with social media could also be recognized if the individual develops mental health illness from being online, for example, feelings of anxiety or depression arising during or after being on social media. Similarly, for some people we have treated at our UK Addiction Treatment Centres, being on social media is a trigger for them to then misuse drugs or alcohol. During therapy, we address why a person drinks alcohol or misuses drugs, and for some, it is because of their unhealthy relationship with social media," the UKAT Group Head of Treatment revealed how social media can be linked to other addictions.

And the desire to be accepted by our peers and our community members is hardwired into us: we’re far more social than our modern culture of individualism gives us credit for. Approval, love, adoration, respect—they’re all things that we want.
However, taken to an extreme, our desire for social approval can grow into desperation. Couple that with social media addiction (we are, some of us, spending more time online than usual and the problem could be getting worse) and you’ve got the perfect breeding ground for folks who want to show the world their best possible side in exchange for attention online. At any cost.

According to ‘UK Rehab,’ overusing social media affects more than just the individual: the community spirit can break down and there’s also a general loss in productivity. What’s more, social media addiction “can also trigger mental health problems” and will continue to lead to even more issues as it’s becoming “even more prevalent than drinking.”
You’d need to see a specialist to determine whether or not you’re actually addicted to social media, but, in general, addiction is something that we continue to do despite it having obvious negative effects on us.
Something else to keep an eye out for that could indicate that we’re addicted to social media is that we hide how much time we spend on social media. What’s more, we fall behind on our responsibilities both at home and at work, we get defensive whenever somebody brings the subject up, and we withdraw from the real world to spend more time online.

i personally feel bad for people that so stuff like this. they're so uncomfortable in their body that they pull stuff like this even though they know that at some point, they'll get caught. and by doing that, they're projecting a unhealthy body image onto social media where tons of impressionable teenagers see it and believe that they have to look like that to be pretty. if you ever feel this way when you scroll on instagram, remember that if they actually looked that good, they wouldn't be an instagram model, they would be strutting down the stage in milan fashion week.

Ok, so this one is off. Usualy I do not support fakestagram, but this time this is not real. Even the comments on redit were turned of. The second pic is not Jeffrree Star. If you follow him on Social Media, you will see plenty of videos of „the real him” and this is not the way he looks. First he does not have the chin dimple like the guy in the second picture, and neither the ”cut” on his lower lip. Hie brows are not tattooed on.

There are a lot of apps that can help you to do this, life FaceApps does with videos. She edits her body first and then goes to change her face an put the face of the girl on the right over her face, as the app recognizes the important points, it can match the way her face is "posing" or "changing".

pretty sure this is venus angelic? depending on how long ago that instagram photo was taken, it very well could have been her mother who did the photoshop. her mother forced her to dress like and act like a doll until 2016 when she ran away. she makes *different* content now and her mom admitted to silencing venus and doing pretty messed up things.

That is true to an extent. However, someone might be dealing with other health issues, like hormonal imbalances, or mental health issues that make it hard to "put in the effort." The most important thing is to accept and value yourself first. After doing so, it is more possible to make that effort to get healthy.

I'm sorry but no. I've been debating saying something or not because I know the inevitable backlash but I've got too. For those saying "she's beautiful" no she's not. She is MORBIDLY obese. She is effectivly killing herself. Now I'm by no means a thin girl, and I'm not saying you can't love yourself if you are a big girl like me. You can. What I AM saying is we should not be putting this woman on the cover of magazines and lauding her as beautiful. In the 90's we agreed as a society that we would not glorify unhealthy bodies, and that's why heroine chic and anorexic models were removed. Swinging to the other end of the spectrum may seem progressive and accepting, but in reality it's the same exact thing. It's telling young women, "this is beautiful", "this is fine", "this is healthy". It's not. I've every respect for Tess, I'm delighted she's happy with who she is and I want her to live a long and happy life. But glorifying this kind of body shape as ideal is not right

She claims to be all about “natural beauty” but she edits herself slimmer than her obese body truly is. She’s grotesquely overweight, which isn’t “brave” it’s unhealthy and sending the wrong message to young girls. Eating yourself into a body where you can barely function but put on makeup so it’s somehow ok? Obesity is killing insurance companies along with the people who are obese. They eat into oblivion then get insurance to pay for their expensive weight loss surgery and then 9 out of 10 of them are back to obese again.

For awards shows women that wear dresses like this use double sided tape to keep the dress from exposing too much, and duct tape to hold their boobs up and make them look "super perky" so you are very close.

I always tend to imagine those over-photoshopping-people as truly dumb ... as hardly able to speak, due to stupidity - and the hat, in this case, proves that I'm right. In this case - still boasting the purpose of making anything "great again" lacks of so much more than just political agreement with me (which in itself is neither wrong nor right), but a very basic understanding of the principle of cause and effect.

... what is this obsession with huge butts about anyway? Wasn't it just a few years ago that everything above the bare minimum of body you need in order not to die that was, whyever, considered beautiful? And now you're skinny af everywhere, if you're as perfect as the usual instagrammer, but have the butt of someone morbidly obese? Even if this only would bear realistic proportions, it still doesn't seem beautiful to me, but just ... well, weird. I think I got it now. She openly admits to her incontinence by not hiding that she wears a diaper. A huge one - seems like you don't have much time to change if you're as busy as an instagrammer. I think she could be even more open - now that hiding it isn't an option anymore ... I had a classmate in 7th grade who wore diapers, and once she stopped hiding, those making fun of her also stopped. Be brave, girl! The sad thing is that they're trying to be different but end up looking all the same. Big pucker lips, (half open of course because they're sexy and they know it), big eyes with fake lashes (can also be used for shades in the summer), tiny waist, big boobs and enormous butts. Oh and don't forget the hair. Part in the middle, wavy, boob length. It's getting ridiculous.
