According to marketing psychology speaker Johnson, grocery stores are in a difficult spot due to how inflation continues to impact consumer spending on essential items. "However, despite the increasing popularity of grocery deliveries for their convenience, there are still several potential advantages to shopping for groceries in person for the average American," he told Bored Panda via email.
"One key advantage is the ability to personally select fresh produce, meat, and other perishable items, ensuring they meet specific preferences for ripeness, quality, and expiration dates. Additionally, shopping in person allows for greater control over the selection process, enabling shoppers to compare prices, explore new products, and take advantage of in-store promotions and discounts," Johnson said.
That’s A New One
I love the description! My parents had a dog that felt it necessary to inform the entire world whenever he heard a strange noise. Strange noises included the running of appliances, turning the TV on or off, the phone or doorbell, the creak of a chair or bed as someone got on or off, the thump of the cat landing, the opening or closing of any door....
Haha excellent!!! I nearly missed this one, thought it was an ad!

Awesome delivery person, obviously, but good on the customer for noticing and letting them know they noticed. Such a small thing like that can really go a long way. When one of my clients notices and appreciates how quickly and/or above and beyond I went for them it makes my day. And the ones that are really easy and cool to work with get to the front of the line with their requests.
When I was a bagger at a store, it was common sense to not merge chemicals with food, no edibles with non-edibles of any kind, and eggs and bread always went on top or both went together in a separate bag. The fact that I've seen grocers who don't follow those basic rules now and days irritates me.
I was a secret shopper at a major food store and we makred down any cashiers who didn't bag food and non-food items separately. But then again, that was many years ago.
Me on the other hand when going grocery shopping makes a puzzle game out of rebaging stuff because I care more about less bags than worried if my toilet paper is bagged with my carrots or ceral
"Moreover, shopping in person can provide a sensory experience that online shopping cannot replicate, such as the ability to smell and touch products, which can enhance the overall shopping experience and potentially lead to more satisfying purchases. Lastly, for some individuals, especially those without reliable internet access or who prefer face-to-face interactions, shopping in person may be a more accessible and social experience."
Johnson noted that it is difficult for newcomers to stand out in the "fiercely competitive" grocery delivery business. "Since Amazon is already an established player, trying to compete on convenience and variety is not a viable option. Instead, newcomers can stand out by focusing on niche markets or specialized products: you don't need to be the best for everything, but, especially in the beginning, you need to be the best at something," he explained to us.

"Newcomers can also leverage their relationships with local producers or farmers for fresh and sustainable products, which larger, existing players often overlook. Given the maturity of the market and the strength of existing players, newcomers face an uphill battle, but by going niche—either through their offerings or through their local relationships—new entrants may be able to carve out a distinctive position in the market and attract a loyal customer base." Many of them have lots of stories—from good and funny to bad and downright weird—to share about working at the company. Many of them feature peculiar customer behavior or requests. The subreddit is a window into what life as a shopper can actually be like.
‘Instacart’ was founded way back in June 2012. Over the course of a decade, the San Francisco-based grocery delivery and pick-up service has become well-established in the United States and Canada. The idea behind the service is that personal shoppers get all the goods the customers order from the participating retail shops.

I don't even think they needed the customer to give them a code, they just needed the gate opened. If they had a valid reason (disability, in the shower, etc.) they could've said that instead of being rude and difficult.

At the time of writing, ‘Instacart’ has partnerships with 1,400 retail banners with 80,000 stores. In 2022 alone, the company fulfilled a jaw-dropping 262.6 million orders worth $28.8 billion. The average customer order was worth around $110. With so much revenue, it’s no wonder that the company has been expanding.
‘Instacart’ has been gobbling up many different e-commerce-related companies in recent years. These include white-label grocer platform ‘Unata’ in 2018 for $65 million, smart cart and checkout company ‘Caper AI’ in 2021 for $350 million, AI pricing platform ‘Eversight’ in 2022, as well as e-commerce platform ‘Rosie’ in the same year.

Slow Day But Great Customers
I learned a long time ago that, if you are nice and tip well when (you don’t have to be flashy and ridiculously overtip, unless you got ridiculously flashy great service, just tip fairly for the quality of the service you got) eating and/or drinking out, you will be appreciated and remembered. Basically, just be a decent human being and give credit (in the form of a decent tip) where credit is due, the staff will remember you and actually like seeing you come in the door.
So true! I used to deliver pizzas and if I had one that I knew was a good tipper and/or a nice person, I would take their pizza first, even if meant delivering out of order. If I a deliver for someone who never tipped and/or was rude and nasty, I wouldn't rush to get to them and I'd put them last in my delivery route. I'm also quite petty so......
Load More Replies...Meanwhile, according to data collected by Statista, 52% of people living in Mexico and South Korea also use grocery delivery services. Brits are huge on deliveries, as well! Only 20% and 10% of respondents, respectively, said they use these sorts of services.

Met These Characters On A Delivery Today
I know a guy who orders "as a gift" a fairly expensive down feather pillow a few times a year for a neighbour he hates who has two dogs like this. Poof!
That's funny!! I love petty people (well, when they aren't being petty to me).

So much making this picture priceless and also making me glad I can run, real fast! Lol
My sister had two dogs that looked like rottys. They were very aggressive looking. A delivery person dropped her package over the fence. The dogs shredded the boxes and the contents. Spread the remnants all over the yard.

It’s expected that food and beverage retail e-commerce revenue will exceed $47 billion in the US alone in 2025. Aside from ‘Instacart,’ Americans mainly rely on ‘Kroger,’ ‘Walmart,’ ‘HelloFresh,’ and ‘Amazon.’
“Despite the blaring success of grocery retailers in the online sector, they face the growing competition of new players delivering meal kits and ready meals. The food service platform Instacart was the most visited groceries website in May 2022, accounting for over eight percent of web traffic,” Statista reports on the rise of ‘Instacart.’
Customer Left An Envelope With My Name On It
All he did was pick up a suspicious looking bag that was kinda body shaped, delivered it to a building site and let the concrete delivery driver know which hole he left it in. Nothing sketchy at all……
Load More Replies...From OP: Okay, this was actually yesterday. And this was right before I put the money on my card to pay my rent. (This was just enough to get it paid). Backstory. Thought I was doing a 40+ dollar batch at Costco at drop. As I dropping off their nearly 500 dollar order, I saw the envelope. Before I even put down their first item I opened the envelope and was shaking like hell. I was in shock. For like, 5 minutes I felt like I was stealing it. Like it didn't belong to me. But it has my name on it. For like minute I was considering giving it back to them, but I knew this was very deliberate, and it was addressed to me. I had to convince myself this isn't a mistake and it's for me. Once I was finished the order and I'm driving off, I barely see their door open. Never got a chance to personally thank them. This was on top of their 20 dollar tip. This of course is my highest total order ever. 500 orders to date. This is my second order over a 100
Thanks for sharing the rest of the story! I was given a large tip once, and had nearly the same reaction...a bit thrown off balance by the generosity. It's an amazing feeling, once you get over that weird feeling that you're somehow stealing or it's been a horrible mistake. 😂
Load More Replies...$200? That’s a good tip! I’m curious what the delivery was because of that high amount of tip. Good for you delivery driver❤️ Edit; he said their name was on it. I usually tip the driver $100 regardless of the order size. We live 20 miles from the nearest grocery store. It’s a long way to drive and gas isn’t cheap.

How Do You Set Up At The Drop Off ?
I would feel bad ordering that much stuff for someone else to have to shop for, load into their car, then unload and pack it all to my porch. Wow that's a lot of sh*t, just wow
I have to ask. What’s the deal with American order like 60+ bottles of water almost every picture? Y’all don’t have tap water that’s drinkable? Isn’t it very expensive to buy tons of water bottles if you can drink tap water? No disrespect or anything I’m only curious. If you can’t drink tap water in the house I totally understand that you buy a lot of water bottles😊
Not everywhere in America has safe drinking water and even in some places where the water is safe it might not be palatable.

I dobt get this. With instacart, you pick the brand , like the ice cream above. So the shopping list would have had alomd breeze , not almond milk.
The customer did select a brand of almond milk. The shopper is kind of being dumb here. They're basically referencing the type of item the customer ordered, rather than the brand. So when they say "no they don't" they meant "no they don't have any of that brand of almond milk in stock" rather than no almond milk at all. The latter is how the customer and most of us would interpret it. Obviously, this shopper didn't know they could/should look for and to offer a replacement, didn't bother to, or couldn't tell that Almond Breeze was almond milk. It's basically bad communication on the shopper's part, and whatever their reason for them not knowing or informing that Almond Breeze was an option.

Oh no. This is quite possibly a fraudulent order. Expensive items + huge tip = stolen card

The customer canceled their order as soon as I pulled into their community. Costco only gives store credit cards as returns. I hate looking sketchy while returning these types of items.

Load More Replies...A Costco employee told me that any food returned is tossed. So instead of returning my unsalted butter, grabbed by mistake, I found a friend who accepted it. If you're going to do butter ... you might as well go all the way and have salted.😂
Exactly! My motto is "Body by butter"! I'll die on that hill...probably of a heart attack, but at least I was happy!
Load More Replies...That shouldn’t be possible, for the customer to cancel after the shopper has accepted the order
And this is why the stores we order groceries from in Norway have a time limit when you can cancel. When having delievery next day you have to cancel before midnight. And if you don’t- it’s too late. Easy as that. To prevent situations like this. Edit we don’t have instacart or other apps where people not working at place you order from can pic up the grocery’s for you. So it’s not really the same as instacart. But it might be a good idea to have a similar system in US. I feel bad for people like this one and also those who used a lot of time finding the right product for you and then cancel as soon as you’re on your way to deliever.
That's far too customer-centric to ever fly over here, unfortunately.

Why did you take the order in the first place if you knew you had a small car?!?!
You should be able to get 5 in the truck, 2 on the passenger seat, and the rest stacked on the back seat.
Utilize the trunk AND interior except for driver’s seat, and yiu just might be able to do it. It will be a squeeze, but possible. Easier if it’s a 4 door Camry.

Fat asparagus stalks are usually tougher and less flavorful. They’re fat because they’re “overripe.”

Is My Shopper Trying To Scam Me Right Now?
I have a order being shopped right now. There’s something on the bottom called “Life Goods” for $149 that I know for 100% fact that I did not order. I asked my shopper what it is and that I didn’t order it and to remove it, and am getting no response
...And banks, and health care, and hotels, and ticket sales, and...
Load More Replies...Even weirder because the only obvious brand called Life Goods sells small housewares like sponges, garbage bags and antifreeze, nothing that would cost $149. Makes me wonder if they somehow entered this manually (don't know if this is possible or not) and typed a random brand name to try to disguise the charge.
Wow. This post has made me realise that not only do I have no idea what Instacart is or how it works, but I can't guess from the posts either. Do the delivery drivers have to not only pick up all the shopping but pay for it with their own money? What does it mean that on the list is something the delivery driver knows that they personally didn't order?
"Do Instacart shoppers pay with their own credit card? Not at all. As an Instacart shopper, you'll get a payment card from Instacart and use it at the checkout register at every store you shop. Getting a payment card is simple. New shoppers usually receive their payment card in the mail 5 to 7 business days after completing the signup process."

OK. So the fact that the dog attacked the car is scary. But... Why does the car come apart so easily?!
Because it's a part that is regularly damaged. So it's made to be easily replaced. Wouldn't surprise me too if you have options for different "trim packs" so it makes it easier to make the base car the same and allows upgrades depending on the pack chosen.
Load More Replies...Hope they will pay the repair bill. I had this happen to my car and it cost more than it should have, but I paid it anyway.
Poor Dog
I'm hoping (but probably wrong) that the "puppy" in question is actually a full grown dog in a breed that gets this large naturally. But knowing how people are im probably wrong
I am choosing to believe that their puppy is a fully-grown Great Dane and don't try to make me think otherwise. But like geez people, you can feed your pets unhealthy things, but in LIMITATION! Sometimes I give my cat the juices from oyster cans, but it's like a once/twice a year kind of treat.

I honestly wouldn't have thought of that, until I realized it's a "staged" pic. Right in the emblem. Granted, they ARE an insta-cart driver, and I'm assuming they're in the same car they deliver in. But why would there be something wrong with them liking/driving either? Not everything needs to be made to "look bad". If anything, it shows they appreciate and enjoy a culture that's not their own. It's cool.

I think you are right, and this happens a lot with grocery delivery/ pick up apps. If it doesn’t show the shopper it’s Bogo and even if they see the sign in the store they will still often assume it’s for one item unless you leave a note like this.

$400 Alcohol Disposal
If you go letter of what they said and not spirit of what they meant then you're just following orders by pouring them in that bucket. One can argue the party is implied. Lol
Load More Replies...I'd totally pour them into something else to save.. what a waste. I don't even drink.
I’d be doing a google search for pictures of empty beer, wine and liquor bottles in a trash can
I know my store does not allow refunds of alcohol either unless it was always near checkout still inside the store AND maybe one bottle too many. We've seen tampers involving glue. Nowadays we no longer sell alcohol to mobile orders.
Ohh is THAT why Kroger won’t deliver alcohol with a grocery order? It’s weird though because Instacart will…
Load More Replies...Whether I actually pour these out or not would depend on how much that "additional payment" is.
Already Had All The Groceries In The Car
Needs more information. Was she hacked, did a kid/hubby get her phone and place the order without her knowing, was it a bug in the app? Or did she just change her mind. Too many unknowns to accuse her of being mean.
Load More Replies...I think a lot of people are missing the fact it could have been someone else who ordered, not her, but used her account. Or other options. Just because we know how it works doesn't mean everyone does. And that doesn't mean they're being fussy if they don't know. This is text, you don't know their feelings and thoughts and you don't have expressions or more communication to back it up with.
Karen? Ye it sucks to have Karen as a name now. Not every ‘Karen’ is a old bitćhy lady who demand speaking to the manager🫤

I don't think that's the problem with this one. Looking at the pics some of those look like the large bricks you use for small retaining walls. Plus a bunch of tiles and drainage pits? That's gonna weigh half a ton or more. All for a $17 tip.
Load More Replies...It's a bunch of stone bricks and slabs, looks like. Hope you got a truck and a trailer
No one unless there stupid is going to take that order unless u tip them a few hundred dollars 💰
Used to live in Glendale. Can tell you where the closest Lowes is before driving all over the valley. No need to go to Santa Clarita.
People are insane. My sister had an order where they wanted 10 bags of mulch. #notaslave
Customer Thought I Was Gonna Ruin My Car For $14
I also thought it was just a road. It doesn't even have potholes.
Load More Replies...See the wheel tracks on the road? Obviously, somebody uses the road all the time. MOST OF THE WORLD - has ONLY roads like this. You need to get out more.
It won't ruin your car if you don't drive like the cops are chasing you.
Honestly this doesn't look bad...it's not like there's huge potholes..
Got Tip Baited For The First Time Ever
OP "She gave a wrong delivery address, correct address was 20 minutes away, delivered to a huge apartment complex. We couldn’t find each other for 10 minutes. Then when we finally do find each other, she conveniently forgot her wallet at home. LOL what a clown. People are the worst."
I’m not American but I’ve read a lot about this on Reddit. That people saying they gonna tip cash when you deliever but they very often ‘forget’. Why are people doing this? Why don’t be honest and say they’re not gonna tip instead of lying? I don’t get it. Is it because if they say they gonna tip it’s bigger chance someone gonna end up accepting the delievery?
Load More Replies...Instacart Shopper Didn't Want To Get Out And Walk
Maybe they have limited mobility and choose the orders they accept carefully based on that limitation?
Don’t Be That Guy Please
Nope 👎 cancel I get it people forget but there's a limit to everything
What, the customer is making the shopping list while the instacarter is already in the store? Why there isn't a function that forces customers to lock the order before delivery?
When ordering groceries from store here you can’t add anything after midnight the day before delievery. They should do the same with instacart. Idk how it works since we don’t have it here but I’ve seen enough to understand the system doesn’t work very well for the shoppers/delivery people. Shouldn’t been able to add when you’re doing the shopping….
Load More Replies...I’m Sad Wanted To Give Back And Was Ignored
I’ve had to Instacart shop for living and recently got a good job. I wanted to give back to other shoppers so I did a grocery order while I’m at the beach for a festival. I gave a good tip and was waiting with a thank you bag with snacks and a Java monster. The driver wouldn’t answer the whole order and when it said delivered I asked where and no response. Turns out they left the order in the lobby even tho I had hand to customer on… oh well next time
Probably not the actual person that is supposed to be delivering and didn't want to be found out. People who can't get an instacart type job for whatever reason will get someone who qualifies and do the shopping under someone else's name. Or it could have been a language barrier. I've had deliveries where the person wouldn't respond and left the stuff in the wrong place
The Shopper Never Came Back For The Groceries
OP on Reddit: I came home to groceries I didn't order on my porch. I waited 20 minutes and the shopper never came back. Feeling blessed, but sad for the shopper/client. Looks quite expensive too.
Someone came home to groceries they didn’t order and the shopper never came back for them. It would help to include that info.
This Is A Hot Mess…
I Couldn’t Believe It. Someone Took This For $31
I Delivered To This Apartment Today
Note Left On My Car From Other Shoppers
A "batch" is an order, and some other instacart shoppers were upset with this shopper for taking on orders too quickly.
Load More Replies...Almost Blind Accepted It
Only a guess but, perhaps they don't allow tips on alcohol
Load More Replies...That's what the Instacart driver is getting paid, not the price of the order.

I honestly don't know what I'm seeing, is the customer somehow scamming because the total is way less than what it should be and if so, how? Sorry I don't know how they do this
It looks like $40 dollars pay for loading/unloading 25 cases of water, 90 gallons of milk, and 3 cases of large water bottles?
Load More Replies...Okay Who Brought Her 4 Lbs Of Jalapeños?
probably had happened on a past order; wanted to be clear so it didn't happen again
Load More Replies...This is a very common and inconsistent error. Sometimes you get 4 items, sometimes you get 4 lbs. It's hit or miss so you have to be specific.
I made that mistake recently. I thought I was ordering 6 apples but I got 6 bags of apples instead. I live alone. I ended up giving a couple of bags of apples to the guy who came to fix my faucet. He was happy!
Load More Replies...What I do to prevent this is to specify the number of the item in the note. For example, "Please bring two individual bananas." This way I will receive two bananas, NOT two pounds of bananas.
I Thought They Were Chips
I Want U Guys To See This
That’s weird because that Harris Teeter is in Corolla, and there is a closer one right before the causeway in Kitty Hawk and one in Chesapeake, VA. But honestly, pick another grocery store.
Lol, who would drive 81.7 miles for a delivery, that really shouldn't be available.
Im So Dizzy & I Almost Had An Accident
This is why acronyms suck! It's digital, stupid app SPELL IT OUT!.. we're looking at Air Quality Index here. No wonder you were dizzy you were smoking pollution and Canadian wildfire smoke!.
That was an education! I’ve never heard of Instacart before, but then we don’t have Uber or Uber Eats where I live. (UK countryside if anyone was interested - don’t like it when people make vague about “in my country” statements!)
Yes, it should be "well known in the US" or wherever it is. Despite the protestations of anti-globalists, we don't all have the same companies.
Load More Replies...We used Instacart twice at the beginning of the pandemic and both were bad experiences. In both cases the shoppers delivered smaller and cheaper versions of what we ordered... but our receipt was for the larger pricier versions, meaning that they kept the pricier ones for themselves. Not that I don't empathise with the plight of the Instacart shoppers- it's a very exploitive gig economy job, but our experiences were terrible really.
At first I didn't see how they could be keeping the pricier one for themselves but they're buying both, the pricey one through Instacart and cheaper one with their own money, and then just giving you the cheaper one. Got it.
Load More Replies...What I leaned from this is that shopping services shouldn't be a platform service, it feel like a such a ripp-off. In my country these services are offered by the store chain and the shippers and delivery people are on the store's paycheck. So you pay about 15 dollar delivery fee and that's it. No tips, you'll never know who shopped your order, and you can't cancell or change your order when the fullfilment has started.
Yeah I stopped using Instacart and switched to the Kroger/Mariano’s app a while ago. They’re not even supposed to accept tips, but I always give the person a $10 bill or something when they arrive.
Load More Replies...Seems to me, unless a customer is sick or disabled this is a lazy @$$ way of getting someone else to do your dirty work. No tips, not opening doors, 2 huge pallets of water or bricks?? Cancelling as you pull up?? Get off your &@+ a@$$ and do your own own flipping shopping.
Many of us switched to delivery during the pandemic. Personally, we haven't switched back. It keeps delivery people in a job...we pay them enough not to have to tip, and I have no idea why you wouldn't open the door, I wouldn't want any food left on the doorstep.
