The Tipping Culture Is Becoming Unhinged And People Share 45 Pics That Prove It
Many have noticed that tipping culture in the US is spiraling out of control. Businesses that were previously free of gratuity, like fast food restaurants and even funeral homes, are now asking for one. What was once a practice of thanking servers for exceptional service has now turned into a peculiar cash grab.Outraged by the tipping culture, many people shared their unpleasant experiences with it. To find the situations in which customers felt stunned and ripped off by requests for gratuity, all you have to do is scroll down.

What Is Going On
Just to clarify, this person bought the flowers *from* the funeral home? That probably means the funeral home already made $30 to $50 for having the flowers delivered from a florist the OP could easily have gone to themselves.
What the actual fvck?? OK, that’s it. I’m rooting for a giant meteor to make the human species extinct.
Funeral homes are the worse. My grandmother was at a funeral home where she was making arraignments for one of my uncles who had died young. She was a widow with little money and was going with a basic casket. One of the funeral people asked her "But didn't you love your son?" One of my other uncles was there and heard him. He backed the funeral guy against the wall and told him if he even spoke to her again he'd beat him to death right there and then.
That is absolutely disgusting! Hopefully more people will notice and they will start losing business.
Jeans Company Is Asking For A Tip For The Person Who Made The Jeans
I get the idea behind it, but wouldn't it make more sense to just pay the workers a fair wage instead of asking customers for a tip?
And take the corporations profits? Stop paying these "tips" and stop buying there products. The only way to send the message.
Now, how likely is it that those jeans were actually made by some poor worker in China or Bangladesh who doesn't even know what a "tip" is because they never got any ?
Yeah, what are the odds that the person who made the jeans would ever see a cent of that tip? Anybody who falls for this is gullible.
Load More Replies...And we all know that person who made the jeans will get nothing. It's probably some poor underpaid worker in a sweatshop somewhere in developing coutries.
Yes, and I'm sure the workers in Vietnam and India are getting every penny of that tip. Not!
A tip to the person who made it? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Yeah, sure. Do these idiots think we still believe in Father Christmas?
This Restaurant Covered Up The "No Tip" Option With A Sticker To Force Tipping
100% I would have removed the sticker, whether the waitstaff was standing there or not.
Even though Americans are tipping a larger amount of money to a wider range of service providers than anywhere in the world, more than two-thirds are dissatisfied with the current gratuity system. Call it ‘tipflation,’ ‘tip fatigue,’ or ‘tip creep,’ most people in the US are uncomfortable with tipping culture getting out of control.
In other countries, tipping remains a gesture of appreciation, but in the US, it has almost become obligatory. Mostly due to workers, especially in the service industry, not being paid a fair and livable wage. In some jobs, employers get away with paying their employees as little as $2.13 an hour because they’re considered tipped employees.

Well, that's just outright theft and I'd be taking $80 out of someone's hide.
If I'm ever going to the US, I'll remember to use cash only. I'm never trusting Americans with my debit card.
Had a friend who dated a real winner of a guy who would do this. He'd write in tips on receipts that had no tips or change the number on ones that did. Fortunately enough people noticed and complained and he got caught fairly quickly. If you tip cash make sure to line through the tip item or write CASH in it. It won't always stop this from happening but it can help.
Nope, for that one I call the bank, the restaurant, and the cops, in that order.
That is not just theft, it is an electronic transaction, which makes this WIRE FRAUD, which is a federal crime. Report, restrain, and await the FBI.
As A Driver Who Very Likely Gets Paid Less Than The Employees At This Restaurant I'm A Bit Confused Why They Think This Is Alright
Yeah, that's not going to happen. Nor are they in any way coworkers.
Tips are for extra service or exemplary service.... food servers just put food in a to-go-box. that's like the most basic function of their job.
NO ONE should tip anybody. Restaurant should charge fair prices including service. Delivery app should pay their drivers fairly. If this is not sustainable for those businesses, good riddance, it was not a business anyway but an employment scam masquerading as business.

Oh, you don't have time to argue. You have 5 minutes. And you still have to pick up ice cream on the way. Why are you still here? Go! And don't forget my tip!"
“Traditionally, tipping was originally an act of appreciation, completely voluntary, not an obligation or expectation. Today, it has become quite the contrary,” agreed finance expert Mafe Aclado from Coupon Snake in a previous interview with Bored Panda.
“However, in my honest opinion, I don't believe this change is solely because servers have all of a sudden become entitled because they expect to be tipped a standard 20% or more," she said.
"Besides the fact that tipping has today become a societal norm, two other reasons the tipping culture has gotten so out of hand are inflation/high cost of living; for most servers, income doesn't go up with inflation, so they are forced to depend on the tips they receive in order to make up the difference from their income. Another reason for this is social influence; people feel tipping is a necessity, and they feel guilty for not doing it."

I eat more at home more now because of c**p like that. And so do many others, so they've lost tips due to greed. I tip for services rendered at a restaurant after, not before. I go pick up a take out, no tip. And I never tip an owner if they're we working --- not my problem. I won't touch a tip jar at a register, won't give it a second look. And IDC if they put down what I should tip, That machine doesn't know the service I got. As a waitress from years ago we busted our butts off, making sure everything was okay. They don't today. But 30%? If you haven't checked on me but once, find another person to give you that. I'm not it.
I'd hit Custom, and drop it down from my standard 20-25% to 10% and tell them it was their AUDACITY that changed my mind.
No, I Will Not Be Adding A Tip. I’m Buying Something Online
I once got a "tip the warehouse" prompt. The thing is, their delivery window was from 2 to 6 weeks. So, if I don't tip you're going to hold my order for 6 weeks?! I canceled the order, let the vendor know why, then purchased what I needed elsewhere.

Don't run a restaurant if you can't afford to pay your employees without extorting your customers
100% I am SO tired of seeing posts by waitstaff saying if you can't afford to tip you shouldn't be dining out - guess what, it isn't MY job to supplement YOUR income, that is the responsibility of your boss/owner. Meanwhile, finance expert Michael Ashley from Richiest previously told Bored Panda that tipping culture in the US might have gotten out of hand largely because it has become a way for businesses to dodge paying fair wages.
“Employers can legally pay workers as little as $2.13 an hour, expecting tips to cover the rest. This puts the burden on customers to make sure workers earn a livable wage, which isn’t fair to either party.
Over time, tipping has become more expected across various industries, even in situations where it wasn’t traditionally common, like grocery delivery or coffee shops. It’s also tied to systemic issues like racism and sexism, which makes the problem even more complex. Ultimately, it's a way for companies to maximize profits while passing the responsibility of fair pay onto consumers.”

Agreed. Seen this multiple times where you don't see the full receipt and you can almost always calculate it out to an additional 18.75 meal w/ drinks if it was a BOGO.
Load More Replies...Note the tip is calculated AFTER TAX, which means you're paying a percentage of your meal AND the same percentage on the percentage of tax. Double rip-off! Had To Ask For A Second Bill Because The Restaurant Added A Tip To The First Without Asking Me… In The UK Too
Yeah. I've encountered that in one of our local restaurants. They have stated (in small print, mind) they are adding 18% to every bill. My hubs didn't notice and threw down a tenner as a tip....I picked the note back up and said the tip is already added and he was ticked off. The menu states that if you want to leave your own tip, to talk to your server and they will take the tip off the bill. So they are using sociatal pressure to get their way. I mean, if you want to take the tip off....you look like a plōnker. We dont go there any more.
UK here. At my local tandoori, they've gone one better - not only do they automatically add a tip, the tip is listed in the *middle* of the list of items so that you're less likely to spot it!
The auto tip and adding it to the bill normally means the server gets none or little of it.
What on earth is " life's better with you " ... And 28 oz of strawberries is nearly 800g , what is this strange receipt
In UK years ago whilst on holiday, I asked the price of a haircut only... £20. Went to pay my bill and the woman said....£30 please. I said...you told me it was £20. She said yes, but we add a tip. 50%??? I slammed the £20 on the counter and walked out.
“Creating Happy People Fee”
Just had an infuriating experience at a new place my husband and I tried. Ordered our meals, and as we were about to order dessert, we noticed this “Creating Happy People” fee. 18 freaking per cent? Are you serious? Granted, we should’ve read the menu thoroughly before ordering, but still. And to have the audacity to still encourage additional tips? Ridiculous! Left without ordering dessert and, of course, NO additional tip. Never again.
Maybe if this place stops making deserts, they can afford to pay their people. We already have the Sahara, Mojave, Kalahari, Gobi, etc. We don't need any more.
Remember, the "back" team is people who make at least minimum wage. Waiters make $2.50/$3.50 per hour and supplement with tips to make at least minimum wage.
There is no reason to suppose that any worker there receives a penny of that money. Management is already openly completely shameless, so fraud would just be part of how they do business.
Avoid these places. When business drops off, then perhaps they'll change their wage structure for employees.
If tipping culture continues to worsen, Aclado believes that the financial burden and dissatisfaction that customers and employees are already experiencing will keep increasing.
“The fact is, we live in an economy where money is tight, and the truth is that it is only a matter of time before today's excessive tipping pressure becomes unbearable for customers, causing them to withdraw their patronage, and this would affect businesses' profits and their ability to increase employee wages.”
What Happened To Honesty And Transparency?

Can you not just refuse to pay it? In the UK, even if the tip is included on the bill you can refuse to pay it.

Ashley also shared a similar opinion. “If tipping culture continues to escalate, it’s going to lead to greater inequity for both employees and customers. Workers will be increasingly dependent on the whims of customers to make a decent living, which is incredibly unstable and unfair. This could exacerbate stress and burnout among workers, especially in service industries.
Customers might also start feeling more resentful as they’re expected to tip for more and more services, potentially leading to a backlash against tipping altogether. If we don’t address the root issues like the sub-minimum wage where both employees and customers will suffer, we'll continue to see growing economic disparity.”

Tipping Culture Is Getting Out Of Hand
So let me get this straight, food delivery services are expecting you to add a tip before you've even received your order? And letting the driver see that you have not added one? That is just insane.
Some won't deliver unless you've added a tip. And some delivery services don't allow you to remove the tip if the driver messes it up. In this case I would have taken a picture of a 20 or 50 dollar bill, and sent it to the driver saying that this was Supposed to be your tip. Too bad, the next driver gets it you sucker.
Load More Replies...Why accept the order? It's my understanding that the drivers are told what they'll earn before accepting any deliveries. That's why the companies increase what they pay out the longer it takes for somebody to accept who finds it worth their while.

Load More Replies...So the question is, how should people who feel uncomfortable with over-the-top tipping culture or can’t afford it behave when faced with requests for gratuity? Well, Vincent Birardi, a CFP and wealth advisor at Halbert Hargrove, suggests giving as much as you can to those employees who are dependent on their tips to earn a livable wage, such as servers, bartenders, hotel bellhops, valet drivers, and more.
“You can always decide to tip a little more or less based on your financial situation and your appreciation for the service provided. The thought still counts the most.”

If you’re with a big enough group that they automatically add a gratuity to the bill, do NOT tip any more.
For a large order and a big group, I think this is ok. A lot of effort there.
I've been to a restaurant that does this. Nope, no choice, no matter how lousy the service, you're stuck with it. This is why I cook at home almost 100% of the time. The US is ridiculous at this point.
Required Tipping
Why in the world do we allow places to dictate that we tip? I might understand gratuity for a large group, but 18% gratuity automatically for a table of 2 who order 2 drinks and a pre-made cinnamon roll... makes me want to shout throw my hands up and shout. Requiring a tip is one thing, but I have seen an increasing number of places require 20+% tip... that's not a tip anymore. Maybe I'm missing something and can deny paying the pre added gratuity? I think the tea party started our country over this very thing no?
Is there a sign posted somewhere that indicates this, or do they tell you before they serve you? If not, I would complain to someone if they charge me without telling me.
Nobody allows tips to be dictated. It is in fact, illegal. They just shame you out of rational thinking, in the hopes nobody is bold enough to call the police and their sollicitor, and have the establishment's license revoked. Yes, I AM THAT BLOKE. The Germans couldn't break me, you haven't a PRAYER, my dear.
That said, there are situations where tipping isn’t obligatory, says etiquette expert Diane Gottsman. “There are some industries where you’ll want to tip, but there’s other industries that if you’d like to tip, by all means go ahead, but it’s not necessary,” she says. Like, for example, a fast food restaurant, a coffee shop, or other quick-service places where customers might be presented with a tablet screen.
The Suggested 20% Tip Is Actually 72.6%
You should never tip on the tax. This gets me so angry when they use it to help determine tips.
There are three buttons on the edge. Hold buttons one and three for ten seconds. Factory reset.
It's almost certainly not calculated as 72.6%. 20% would be $3.80, so it might be adding $10 to any tip level.
My FedEx Driver Asking For Tips. I’ve Never Seen This Before
Not gonna happen, especially since drivers are paid fair wages AND have union protection.

I am a FedEx ground driver, this is definitely something done by the driver, we work for contractors and are not covered by a union, some pay really well and some don’t
If FedEx wants to set up a system themselves like Amazon did, then go at it. This is not it.
That should be reported. They can't do that so this one must be acting on his own.
Not sure it was Fed Ex, but when my $500 4k monitor was delivered it was barely far enough onto the porch to balance, and almost half of a box that said "Viewsonic" was easily visible to people on the sidewalk or street. Couldn't even out it 2' farther, behind the knee wall where it wouldn't be visible. I'd consider the occasional tip if they consistently put packages in a reasonable spot, but they're already overpaid judging from the typical delivery.
No. Make FedEx pay the driver more. WITHOUT raising prices. Time for the business people to suck it up!
This Is Getting Ridiculous, I Have Been Noticing This Trend Too
Nice of them to reverse the usual method to try and take advantage of muscle memory as well
15%-20% is the standard. Write it in Custom, if necessary. If it's counter service, didn't tip at all. Don't let them manipulate you.
No tip is the lowest option, you can also customise the tip (add what you want)
In general, people have to rely on their common sense for these things, says Gottsman. “If you experienced great service from this person, if there’s a connection between [you and] them, they’re smiling, they’re friendly, and you feel the urge to tip, by all means do so,” she advises. “I never want to discourage a tip, but if you have a six-second exchange—you ask for a cup of coffee, they turn around, pour it from the spout, and hand it to you— that is discretionary.”
Probably The Worst Tipping Place I’ve Come Across
There is a pizza and taphouse type place near work. You order the pizza at the counter, they call your number and you come pick it up. When you use your card to pay, it defaults to a 25% tip, and to change it or get rid of it, I literally had to ask for help navigating the menu. Then if you want beer, they hand you one glass, and a card that card is used to keep track of your tab, and they link the card to your credit card. When you want a beer, you walk up to the wall of taps, you put your card near the reader and then pour your own beer.
These drop boxes say “for faster checkout” but if you try and check out at the counter, they tell you no and that you have to choose one of those boxes.
So to recap, a place you go to the counter, order your food, they then call your number and you grab your own food and sides. You pour your own beer, and you’re expected to clean up your table at the end.
The food is good, but the expectation of tipping here is horrendous especially when you do it all yourself, even cleaning up after yourself.
Stop complaining and do something: walk out, walk away, keep tip money in your pocket. Tell them you won't be back.
I mean the point his they can't after already having purchased and drank the drinks ,that's what they're complaining about is there is no other option

To prevent the tipping culture from overall worsening, Ashley believes that we need to push for the abolition of the sub-minimum wage so all workers are guaranteed a fair wage without relying on tips.
“Some businesses have already started experimenting with tip-free models, where they pay their employees higher wages and incorporate that into their pricing,” he notes. “This approach can work if it’s done thoughtfully, with transparency about pricing so customers understand where their money is going. Also, raising awareness about the origins and implications of tipping can help shift public opinion and encourage more people to support these kinds of changes.”

So Sick Of This
As an Aussie where tipping culture isn't established, I don't mind tipping on occasion, eg: if it's a particularly crappy weather day etc, but I have to admit I only became more willing once I confirmed that the online tips actually *did* go to the drivers. Why Is Tipping Frowned Upon But Charging Extra On Weekends Isn’t?
If this is a civilised country which pays living wages (such as Australia), it could be argued that this is reasonable. We have penalty rates in Oz (https://www.paycat.com.au/blog/penalty-rates-in-australia) so a business applying an increased cost to cover what they are required to pay staff is fair. The alternative would be for the business to raise prices generally. Note that these increases are less than all these mandatory tips you are seeing in other postings, and nothing like a ludicrous 50% or 100% increase in what you being invited to pay
I agree. Workers should be paid extra for weekends and public holidays. I expect to pay more for their inconvenience and my convenience.
Load More Replies...Normal in Australia on public holidays, the staff are paid a lot more and the business would lose money if they didn't charge extra.
Because it's perfectly reasonable, though not very common, to pay people more for working hours that interfere with free time that meshes with the free time of friends and family working typical business hours. I'll happily take the downvotes, like those for Anony and Tucker, because it's nice to see the evidence that I'm not mistaken about how stupid people are.
Keep in mind, the surcharge is not considered a tip/gratuity. They still expect you to leave a tip at the end.
Why Is Tipping Out Of Control In The US?
We are having the siding of our house replaced. Total bill is about $40k, and it is paid in installments. Today, I paid one and noticed a new tipping "feature" on the payment site. What is this? ETA: For those suggesting to click "none": Obviously I know that is an option but the mildly infuriating aspect is the idea that it is even present for this type of service. Another ETA: Thanks to everybody commenting. My personal favorite is when the comment disregards the ETA. (/s for those folks).
Unfortunately, that's probably correct. My home sustained massive hail damage a few months ago. They had to completely replace the siding on one side of my home. 80 feet x 10 feet of siding cost me about $6000. If they have a multi-story home that's over 3,000 square feet, it could very well be that much...

Doesn't a photo in the QR Code come from their VENMO account .. so that means it goes straight to their personal account whenever someone tips with the Code.
Tipping Culture Is Getting Out Of Hand
If you can’t afford the company’s expenses, you can’t afford to have a company. Sell up and get a job working for somebody else.
We already have to pay for traffic school in the first place. Fvck this.

Why does no one use the custom tip option?? I mean $5 would cover it and no one can really b***h about Cash. I cary cash now. $1 for the coffee person. $1 per drink for the bartender (Obv if I am paying for just myself) Haircut gets 20% etc. etc. etc. I generally use a tip calculator, but it seems as if no one wants to do math anymore.
Yes, most places I've noticed, at least around here, are trying to make 30% the norm instead of 20%. I eat out very little anymore.
And in the 70's and 80's the standard was 10%. That tip is now worth 4 - 6 times what is was worth simply because of the increase in prices. I'm chafing at not only the prices being that much higher, therefore the dollar value of the tip has gone WAY up, but now they want to double the standard tip, so in fact you're paying more like 8 times the dollar value you'd have paid back then. That's ridiculous. Now to want to bump that up to 30%? Totally delusional.

I see no issue with this one. They're not making it mandatory to tip, they're simply making it clear you can do it and the driver gets to keep the tips. I don't know how it works in the UK, but in France, some places ban tips and employees can get in trouble for accepting them. Lots of places also require employees to put all their tips together, the money then gets used for things like buying a cake and having a small celebration for one of the employees' birthday or retirement. (The reason behind it is about keeping it fair for all employees because let's be real: a pretty girl giving mediocre service is more likely to get a big tip than an ugly man giving outstanding service.)
This might be a spill-over from foreign holiday excursions where tipping the coach driver is normal.

I HATE this. Pizza places started adding delivery charges decades ago, and they always say it doesn't go to the driver. The only thing different between pickup and delivery is the driver, so where does it go? The only thing I can think of is that they do technically have to give the driver a mileage based supplement for use of their car, but I think that amount is far less than what they're talking as a delivery fee.
The pizza place i worked at had their own vehicle for the driver to use and the delivery fee was for gas. At least that made sense.
Load More Replies...I love the "for OUTSTANDING service", that doesn't really take into consideration that it could have been just average
knock knock "here's your pizza" - "thanks. bye"
Load More Replies...I worked for a for a franchise of that chain. if the till was short at end of day the tips for that day incl. the driver were cut short. I understand if there's serious money missing they would do that but mistakes happen, too..plus how can a driver not even cashiering be made responsible for in store? also, they would not tip us out daily but only when tips reached 100
Just Booked A Flight Using The Hopper App. Who Am I Tipping?
It's a free app that offers great services and isn't plagued with ads, they're just asking for a donation to help with the costs of keeping the app running. They're probably using the word "tip" for psychological reasons: in general, people have a different reasoning when asked for a tip ("It's true this app helped me, I should give a little thanks.") than a donation ("It's free, why should I give them money ?!")
i psychologically prefer the term "donation" with an explanation as i would help fund a site i want to continue to use without a monthly charge vs 'tip' an unseen entity.

In this case I think using the term donate would be much better than tip but otherwise I think this is perfectly fair.
We visited the US last year, but never again. Tipping is the first reason. Let me get this straight. I order from a guy sitting on a stool at a fish shack. The card machine suggests 20%, 25% or 30% tip and nobody has done any “service” yet. I pick up my own cutlery, go to a table, wait for my number to be called then pick up my food from the counter. After eating, I clear my table and put the separated dishes and rubbish on the bus station. What freakin’ “service” did I pay for with the tip 😠 It’s a scam in a country that lacks civilisation. The other reason I won’t visit again is the President.
I tip less now than before. Before I tipped as an expression of appreciation, now I feel it is being pressed as an expectation. I don't cave to extortion
Would you like to tip your ATM? [10%] [20%] [30%] [Custom > 30%] [ ̶N̶o̶]
I bought something online yesterday, it asked me for a tip! Exactly who would I be tipping? I had no interaction with anyone!
These business owners should remember if people did not go to their establishment to eat, to get take out, or whatever services they offer they would not be in business. To DEMAND a customer to leave a tip is insane. Not only do I never feel the need to have to leave a tip, I would not give my money to a place the requires it. If everyone lived by the "if you cant afford to tip, dont eat out" c**p, these places would not be in business. I dont think its a matter of the workers getting better jobs, its going to a place that will hopefully give a living wage. They want you to cover the cost to pay for their employees while also raising prices on everything, and getting less for it.
Unbelievable rubbish culture. What's next, my builder did a good job 25%, my gas station delivered without spilling (25%) my council built this road (25%) oh that's already there. I mean it's total c**p. Waitresses/Waiters do a job, just like everyone F*****G else. Why should they not be paid properly and no tips (LIKE THE REST OF THE WHOLE BLOODY WORLD) Next, my AI prompt requires 25% tip for the useful information you have already paid for. UGH UGH UGH.. And Americans wonder why the planet thinks they are nuts?
You will be shocked to find that foolish people will in fact give extra money to the staff of the construction team. There are some people out there that think doing so makes them exceptional human beings, I call them fools.

I love the cultural difference on display Americans; " I was asked to pay a $200.99 tip for amputating my own leg at the hospital!" Brits; "Some b@stard asked me for a tip!! F#ck that!!"
That's because in the UK a tip is an extra appreciation for good service, and we pay it gladly. What we don't like is extortion and having to support companies who are too greedy to pay proper wages.
Load More Replies...I'm sure the single event that has lead to this was when the US lawmakers enshrined that tips counts towards ones lawfully mandated minimum pay. It was what laid the groundwork to it morphing from an "nice to get" thing to something that is now expected. And as so many are now used to ripping it is creeping further and further out in terms of places where it's asked/expected.
You need an adjustment to your time line here, that law is less than a month old and hardly caused a tip culture that has been around at least 60 years from my personalexperience.
