So you think you're clean? You shower or bath every day, brush your teeth and wash your hands... Job done. Well, not quite. There's a lot more to hygiene than the simple things we were taught as kids.
You can smell great, look clean and fresh but still be totally gross below the surface. The dirty blind spots are everywhere. Hiding behind your ears, under your fingernails, on your phone and in other places some bods don't bother to check.
Someone recently asked, "What's a hygiene habit that people don't talk about but really should?" and people didn't hold back. They shared a mix of tips, some (seemingly) obvious and others that might surprise you. From washing behind your ears, to cleaning your belly button, soaking dog leashes once a week, and using a soap that actually suits your body chemistry...
Bored Panda has put together a list of the best answers for you to scroll through before your next bath or shower. Upvote your favorites and feel free to share your own hygiene tips in the comments section below.

Close the lid before you flush. Especially if you keep your toothbrush nearby.
Your toothbrush is already contaminated with fecal matter, but the thought may help you feel better about that. The studies of microbes in our home environments is terrifying to look at closely. It's like restaurant kitchens - if you like eating out, never, ever set foot in a working kitchen. Ignorance is bliss and once lost, priceless.
Good hygiene isn't just about keeping your body clean. It extends to so much more... Your home, your pets, the way you prepare food, how you change and dispose of a baby's diaper. Hygiene is about any behavior that improves cleanliness and helps to prevent the spread of germs and diseases.
WASH YOUR HANDS WHEN YOU GET HOME. I don't do anything till I've taken my outside clothes off and wash my hands. So many things you've touched that thousands of people have touched with hands from who knows where on who knows what.
I keep trying to convince my mom that's why she's always getting sick. It's the first thing I do when I come in the house - even if all I touched was my own car. She just forgets sometimes. Also, you should wash your hands after you clean the litter box. I had to yell at my dad when I caught him not washing his hands afterwards.
And by washing your hands at home it's all miracuously cured/neutralized.
Cleaning the ridges of your ears, they're disgusting bacteria traps. .
I get shampoo and conditioner on them in the shower, then clean that gunk off with alcohol preps. Ears are waxy, greasy, disgusting things. Dad had a wax impaction and wears hearing aides. I won’t put them in without putting on gloves to begin with, but hearing wax squelch out of his ear one day when I was putting in his BTA hearing aid got me nauseous. I’m a trauma nurse/former paramedic. I can handle some really gross stuff, but p**p coloured wax coming out of his ears made me ill.
And the bacterias are then affraid to go there, of course. Beause it's clean over there.
Yup. I do this every time I wash my face. Otherwise I can get pimples on the outside of my ears. And they're painful!
Your kids are not as good at hygiene as you think they are. As a mom and a former teacher, they need help and refreshers on what to do throughout childhood and into their teen years. You’re not watching them shower after a certain point so if they got something wrong they’re doing it wrong for life. Also as they enter puberty (or preferably starting before) start talking about the need for clean body parts and how that changes as they grow, prepare them for the mean things kids say if they smell (sounds mean but better a prep from you than a jab from a peer) and how to protect themselves from hygiene related issues if they start showering in a locker room.
Underwear stains aren’t normal. It’s indicative of poor hygiene. 🤮 Amazed how many people excuse them and consider them normal- especially for boys/men.
Skid marks are not normal. Wipe & wash your a*s, heathens.
Load More Replies...That's the least of the problem with some guys/people. PLEASE just wash anywhere you have a cr@ck or fold of skin. This includes your bunghole, bungcrack, and your balls!

Wash behind your ears. Grannies know what's up.
People forget how grimy their water bottles get, especially the lids and rubber seals. A quick scrub every couple days makes a huge difference. So In my experience, It’s one of those quiet hygiene wins you don’t notice until you finally do it.
I just leave the tops off and caps/lids open overnight. The dry air keeps bacteria and fungus from growing.
Don't waste your money on "water bottle cleansing tablets." They're just denture tablets repackaged and priced much higher. Generic denture tablets are fairly cheap.
BELLY BUTTONS ARE ESSENTIAL TO WASH!!!
“Always keep your belly button clean and your toenails trimmed. You never know when you’ll be on the operating table” -my sister who works in the operating room.
I follow this rule because I always think the same whenever i'm like, nahh but then I do it lol
Load More Replies...And your bungcrack too please! Not just the hole, the cr@ck part that goes upwards towards your back. I shouldn't have to say it, but it seems like some people think it's self-cleaning. 🤮
Wash your legs and feet when you shower! Water alone isn’t cleaning them.
But what about the urine from when I pee in the shower? That cleans my feet, right?
Only works if you are a man, because women can't aim. So, if you are a man in a relationship with a woman, help a gal out during shower, I'm sure she'll love it. Follow me for more relationship hygiene advice!
Load More Replies...Always wash your hands before eating anything.
It's ridiculous that there are people who don't do this or try to do it all the time.
Cleaning under your fingernails is underrated. Washing your hands is only step one tbh.
I clean my nails while shampooing my hair, scrubbing them into the scalp. Nothing else I've ever tried comes close, or feels so good.
I can't stand having short nails but mine are so thin they're transparent, if I don't feel the dirt I can see it. I'm constantly cleaning under my nails
If you have a dog, wash their leash in a bucket every so often. It’s been dragged through so much and then you put your hands on it….
Washing stuff you get from the store, especially when it doesnt come in sealed packaging. You don't know where its been or who has touched it. Wash your produce, clothing, dishes, household items and honestly even disinfect new toys.
It's not a personal hygeine habit, but it is crucial in preventing spread of illnesses. Don't put your faith in the general public, ever. Wash the things that you bring into your home.
Work in a dollar store. I will never try on hats, shoes, gloves, clothing of any kind without washing it first. People are nasty
Yeah. Let's try not to bring *all* the communicable diseases back.
Are you telling me that people buy an apple and don't wash it? Or buy a plate and eat from it without washing it first??
I find apples taste best plucked straight from the tree while driving by on my riding lawn mower.

Cleaning your phone.
People touch it all day and never think about the germs on it.
Door knobs used to be made of copper ... copper worked both directly and indirectly to destroy the bacteria.
Load More Replies...Or the steering wheel and all other things we don't wash. The shoelaces. Keys. Coins. Yuck.
I hear men using their phones in the stalls all the time. I've even seen phones sitting on the floor. Less than half of them wash their hands at all and probably never clean their phones. Later I see them with the phone sitting on top of their coffee, out on their desk near food, tucked under their chin...
You’re likely wearing too much perfume or cologne and no one wants to tell you to your face. it’s an accessory, i shouldn’t be able to smell it on you from 5-10+ feet away.
Thankfully it is less acceptable to shower in perfume these days. I remember going into workplaces where people had so much perfume on (yeah, cologne is perfume) that they stank up the whole place. Riding an elevator was eye watering.
There's someone in the building where I work who does this. I've no idea who they are, but my eyes start watering when I approch the elevator they must have used minute before.
Load More Replies...YES! Not super sensitive to smell in general but there are some people who use cheap scents that smell like they bathed in it, carries from room to room and causes headaches. Even plenty of doctors and procedures don't allow using deodorant or cologne/perfume for that reason
Perfume doesn't eliminate stink. It just adds a layer of stink.
Load More Replies...Never tell a woman you don't like the smell of her perfume. She may not be wearing any.
I work on a college campus and want to send this as a note to all students. Even if your perfume/cologne technically smells "good," if I can smell you before I see you, it's MUCH too much!
Clean the nose pads on your glasses. Depending on the type you have, sweat and the oil from your nose can make it smelly and can literally erode metal frames.
Similar issues can happen with jewelry. My dad had a bumpy gold nugget ring with little nooks and crannies. He noticed a bad odor, followed it to his ring, and discovered food particles rotting in there. Clean your bling too!
Inside watch links too. Back when I wore a watch with a stretchy band I would scrub it with a toothbrush - all kinds of gunk gets stuck in there.
Load More Replies...Used to work in the glasses section of an eye doctor's office. This older man would bring his metallic frames in and the nose pads would be DISGUSTING. We had a special frames washer (a small steel tub that vibrated so hard it would 'shake' all the grossness off) and sometimes even that barely got the job done.
One of the security guards has never cleaned his glasses/ nose pads in probably 100 years. It‘s green/yellow and full of crumbly something 😵💫🤢.
Cleaning your tongue. Brushing alone doesn’t handle bad breath.
I was watching a comedy where the main character was a dentist. He had a line that stuck with me, "only floss the teeth you want to keep". Still makes me chuckle.
My dentist has a framed copy of this saying on her office wall.
Load More Replies...Brush, floss, quick brush again (to clear away flossing debris), scrape tongue, and mouth wash. 2-3x daily.
Most athletic shoes can and should be washed. Too many folks just think shoes are rank and there is nothing to be done about it. WASH THEM.
Try to have 2 pair of your go to shoes so they can have a day off to air out.
Wear deodorant
Mostly dudes I feel like they really didn't get the memo. I'm so tired of these stinky men walking around smelling like onions left out in the sun 🤢.
It is my experience that onions left in the sun will just sprout and then not stink at all, so I reckon our bulbous friends will take offense at that!
Yep. My ex's (mid-40s) excuse was "I'm a truck driver--it's just me in the cab." Dude, that's fine, but my house is not a trucker cab! (one of many reasons he's an ex)
If you suffer from acne, make sure you are cleaning your phone and changing your pillowcase every night.... I used to use a clean tee-shirt on my pillow and flip it inside out the next day, when toss in the wash and replace with a clean tee-shirt.
Pillowcases have hair product, hair oils, sweat and drool on it - so wash your face and put it on a clean surface every night when you sleep. It will help with breakouts.
I use those headphone headband things to sleep at night and started breaking out. Realized it was from the band. So I bought a slightly more expensive one that is machine washable after removing the electronics of course. Get a washable one it's worth the little extra money.
Cleaning your earring holes!!!! Idk if it’s just me, but I always get a whiff of them when they smell bad.
when I take out a pair of earrings , they go right into some rubbing alcohol, same when I put in a new pair, they get soaked and put in wet with the alcohol. it kills germs. then i dry them off with a clean hand towel or washcloth.
Cleaning the showerhead.
I do this, mainly to get rid of calcium. Put white vinegar in a plastic bag, then tie it to the shower rose, and leave it overnight.
use "cleaning vinegar" ... 30 percent vice kitchen white vinegar

Cleaning earbuds/airpods. Super easy to get an ear infection from dropping those suckers on the ground.
Using a toothpick to clean the grossness that builds up around the edges is also important
A toothpick or needle to loosen any debris trapped around the edges is a good idea, but more importantly... Wipe them down with a cotton swab or cotton ball dipped in rubbing alcohol to clean the entire surface.
Load More Replies...Start making your kids bathe nightly in 4th grade. Including a hair wash. Supervise until they have it right. Buy deodorant and make them apply it. Supervise until they have it right. Brush teeth after breakfast please. We're sick of leaning over your nasty smelling kids trying not to gag while helping them. Greasy late elementary/middle school hair stanks.
A lot of parents seem oblivious of when their kids' hormones kick in and start stinking to high heaven. Please check the armpits of any tee to make sure when is time to use deodorant. I've legit gagged in some classes
My niece is 12 and she was complaining that her parents make her wear deodorant even though she "doesn't need to" according to her. I assured her she did in fact need it. :P
Load More Replies...My mom knew I was ready for deodorant (10 yrs old) when I hugged her after playing outside all day and she could smell me.
4th grade? Shouldn't they bathe regularly at, I don't know, age 6? If you're a teacher who is afraid of smelly kids, teaching is not for you. You don't know what families are going through.
We’re not talking about that after PE or recess smell…we’re talking a smell that causes other students to avoid them, a smell that makes it impossible to work with them one on one. And this is why many schools have showers and washers, to help those kids when they don’t have that support at home.
Load More Replies...My parents tried to withhold deodorant from me as I entered adolescence because they though that would keep the girls away from me. Overkill. My arm pits were not the part of my body that kept the girls away.
Pick a soap that works with your body chemistry. Some people use one that's supposed to smell like sage but it makes them smell like great grandma's moldy attic.
If you have back acne and long hair consider washing your back in the shower after you've conditioned as well as keeping it off your back while styling afterwards.
The silicones and other smoothing products can irritate your skin and pores.
If you can't reach your back, buy a silicone back scrubber. It's a meter-long strap of nubbly silicone. Soap it up and have the cleanest back you've ever had.
Take your washing out of the washer/dryer when you're done with it stop letting it fester and get minging.
Just remember to check every so often so your kitten doesn't jump in and then scream because he can't jump out. Ask me how I know this.
Load More Replies...Lotion on your feet after showering. I know it sounds odd, but you'd be surprised at how many people have given me weird looks when I tell them it's a habit for me. if you struggle with dry feet especially, it WILL be a life savior after a while.
I do this after every shower/bath. It should be done while the skin is still retaining water. Socks help with the slippery-ness (?) and my 68 year old feet are soft as can be. Appreciate the feet!
"Training your scalp/hair" isn't a thing. Some people produce more sebum. Those people need to wash their hair more frequently. I CAN SMELL YOUR HAIR OIL, AND IT MAKES ME WANT TO PUKE.
I'm one of those people who usually has to wash my scalp every day. I use a gentle sulfate-free shampoo that's suitable for daily use. During pollen season, with allergies, I couldn't imagine going to bed without washing my hair first or my eyes would be swollen and itchy in the morning. I use a deep-cleansing shampoo that has styling product, metal and mineral buildup removers once every two weeks. It's pretty hardcore stuff for the scalp.
I've heard of training your hair, like to train it to part a different way than it naturally falls, but I've never heard of training your scalp to produce more or less oil. Didn't know that was a thing!
I've never heard training your scalp. You can't train your scalp not to secrete!
Load More Replies...Don’t wipe from back to front. Ever. Especially if you’re a woman.
My niece has done this for 19 years. Never had an issue. Some people are like that.
... how do you know this? Did it come up in casual conversation?
Load More Replies...Using a washcloth is more efficient in cleaning your body than just a bar of soap.
Friction is your friend. The cloth (with soap) scrubs dirt and loose skin cells from the skin's surface. No scientific paper needed, just your nose and skin.
As you get older, look into Persimmons soap. Trust me...
It seems that persimmon extract neutralize the compound that gives "old person" smell, that we start producing as we age.
It really helps. IDK about the old person smell, but it works amazingly well on all the other smells.
Stop breeding bacteria!
The number of guys who stink because of a dirty bathroom is wild. It's like a science lab of smells they track and spread everywhere.
Don't let moisture sit and bacteria spread!
- Keep A bathroom window open or fan running for 1hr after showering. Longer in humid climates.
- Keep towel on a drying rack, fully open. If folded, make sure there's space between the layers
- Dry off in the shower to prevent a wet floor
- Don't leave sweaty/damp/wet clothes crumpled-up
- Pee in the toilet. Seriously, dudes!... Sit down at home
- Clean your towels at least once a week
- Clean your loofah and scrubbers weekly. Dishwasher is convenient
- Don't bring the outside into where you clean yourself (no shoes)
- Keep a rag to wipe water from the counter after use
- Keep your counter clear to make cleaning easy
- Disinfect shower at least quarterly
- Wash your shower curtain with bleach monthly
- White towels washed with bleach are a good hack if you don't have time/interest to vinegar wash and dry on high heat
Edit: If you use the dishwasher, clean it properly with bleach and vinegar before using with dishes.
NEVER mix bleach and vinegar! Toxic gasses result. Use one or the other.
Keep your bathroom window open for one hour? I'd love to, so as to get rid of the moist...but my bathroom is blind, as it's common in most newest buildings.
Use a small dehumidificator, they're quite cheap and really work
Load More Replies... Wash your rubber gloves with hot soapy water after use and before removing.
I wear rubber gloves when cleaning the toilet and bathroom, etc. Might be OTT, seems sensible to me.
I use disposable gloves and only clean the toilet just before having a shower
Load More Replies...Putting lotion on your elbows so they're not so ashy.
Use lotion all over, especially in the winter, if you live in a dry climate, and as you get older. It's not just hygiene, it's health. Dry skin tears more easily, which can lead to infection.
If you have stinky feet, please just use talcum powder.
Here’s a specific one. Don’t put bar citrus in your drink. Those things have been rolling around in the back of nasty trucks and the bar you’re ordering your drink or even water from don’t wash the rinds because they’re meant to spritz into your drink and be set aside. I cringe every time I see someone put a bar lemon or lime straight into their drink.
Nah. Most restaurants wash their fruits first. Rolling around the back of a truck? Buddy, they're in a wrapped up box, chill out. Meanwhile, the fish you're eating is frozen from 5 states away.
Also, where do you think that produce was BEFORE it was packed into a box?
Load More Replies...Shaving your armpits…even as a guy! You will stink so much less, and you will feel more clean! Deodorant will apply with ease. You will love it and wonder why you didn’t shave them to begin with.
Hair helps trap the sweat, so while it won't cause the smell, it will certainly amplify it.

Also, almost religiously avoiding all kinds of dirt lowers your resistance to it. The healthiest kids are kids who are allowed to get dirty, dusty, sandy, muddy while playing outside.

I also regularly wipe down my over-ear headphones. I also clean all the piercing holes regularly. Wash sportswear after each use. In northern latitudes, it is also a good idea to wash beanies, gloves and mittens regularly.
My worst hygiene failure was getting a foot infection that needed surgery, from trying on shoes in a store. Other people have worn those shoes. When was the last time you washed your watch? Gave it a really thorough clean I mean.
Clean your credit/debit cards. Think how many people touch them and how often they make contact with surfaces that are touched literally hundreds of times a day.
Also clean your belt. You touch it every time you use the restroom. Another forgotten surface is bath towel rods/hangers.
