This Artist Decided To Show What Disney Characters Would Look Like If They Had Realistic Bodies
Disney gave us a colorful bunch of friends to grow up with. Some were bold, expressive, and charismatic. Others were quiet, deep thinkers, carrying a world of emotions in their kind hearts. But as different as they were on the inside, most of them were very similar on the outside.
So artist Wyethe Smallish decided to try and see what they would look like if they were built differently. "I have my own body image issues that I work on, and a major way that I do that is through my art," Wyethe told Bored Panda. "So as a therapeutic exercise I wanted to alter some characters I really loved growing up."
But what started as a personal project has already touched hundreds of thousands of people—after Wyethe shared her works on social media, they quickly went viral, receiving tons of praise from people who really appreciate such a refreshing take on their beloved characters.

Ariel
Now the one on the left looks like she has an eating disorder 😬 they should def normalize different body types
it doesn't look like an eating disorder, it just looks like a cartoon. ie, not a realistic depiction of proportions & details. if people turn on "the little mermaid" with the expectation of seeing realistic human anatomy, that's their own problem. source: ive been drawing & experimenting with different styles my whole life, & ive been studying animation (as a hobby) for a long while too. it's an art form, not a snapshot of the real world.
Load More Replies...They need some insulation in that cold sea water! Like seals....
Load More Replies...The one on the right looks like normal girl (even on skinny side). On the left she looks like without ribs.
Second one is a normal and achievable size?
Load More Replies...Mulan
I am usually not a fan of Disney redraws, however, I really like this one. Mulan would have been muscular since she was constantly training and fighting. She was a warrior and would have had defined muscles.
Someone hasn’t lived in China. Why does she have arms like she goes to the gym? I’ve known plenty of strong Chinese girls who eat loads, but they find it difficult to gain weight and especially not on their arms.
Both sides on this one is realistic to me. Mulan isn't super skinny and looks healthy on the left if thin, but Mulan is also young in the movie. Maybe they could have given her a thicker waist and thighs later in the movie to reflect her training
*holy music stops* *jazz music starts* HOLY HELL SHE IS T H I C C
The Disney Princess franchise is comprised of thirteen princesses and a number of associated heroines. Regardless of any actual title(s) they have, each official Disney princess is properly addressed (within the franchise) with the title of "Princess" preceding their name.
They are: Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Ariel, Belle, Jasmine, Pocahontas, Mulan, Tiana, Rapunzel, Merida, Moana, and Raya.
"Growing up as a little girl, I always looked up to [Disney's] princesses and admired [their] stories," Wyethe said.
"I noticed that they all had the exact same body proportions, and that made it harder for me to relate to them as I grew up."
Princess Aurora
no it doesn't, it just looks like a typical cartoon, meaning the art style exaggerates some features & simplifies others for the sake of easy animation & striking character design. it's only "strange & grotesque" if you mistake cartoony styles for photographic realism.
Load More Replies...She still looks so skinny, it’s sickening how much weight the artist put on her, and she STILL looks like a model. Disney princesses don’t have organs.
Bro, why are we shaming naturally skinnier people now? This is supposed to be changing toxic and unobtainable imagery, not shaming one side to make the other better. We're equals? The edit is great.
Load More Replies...Aurora's actual live action model (Helene Stanley) and voice actress (Mary Costa) were not that big. Stop narrowing the concept of "reality" to chubby bodies.
Jasmine
Aladin was also homeless and had barely anything to eat, he gave his food away to children in the movies.
Load More Replies...I know hon, and we support you and many othe types of bodies, nobody here is suppose to be jugding somebody <3
Load More Replies...hey big noses are nice - sincerely, a big nose enjoyer
Load More Replies...Rapunzel
She's probably got the strongest arms and core in the world from swinging around, painting, and kneading dough all day!
And pulling her own adult mother up a giant tower everyday
Load More Replies...granted, isn't she wearing a corset or something of the sort?
yall shes like sixteen. I get it's supposed to be "All Inclusive" but she's still in her pretty phase
Having said that, Wyethe really enjoys the Disney character design. "It is a gorgeous style!"
However, she believes that, "as a society in this day and age, body representation not only makes the image more relatable, but it also helps with body acceptance and body appreciation."
Jasmine
She looks great either way. I don’t understand why Disney characters aren’t allowed to have average bodies. Surely kids won’t care.
No but seeing really thin waists with big hips and breasts defo affected me growing up
Load More Replies...Men run the world, so they draw women the way they wish we looked, not the way we are.
It's just a stupid drawn style Jesus Christ dude, How many Tarzan or Beast do you know?
Load More Replies...Disney is making kids more self conscious of their body image, not a very good way to influence them.
Cinderella
Yeah, but Cinderella should be shown as too skinny. She wasn't fed properly and had to do all the hard manual labor.
you are totally correct, i also think a bit more muscle or smthn should be added
Load More Replies...Cinderalla ate crumbs if I remember correctly. She wouldnt have a healthy body.
Cinderlla wasn't fed enough to keep up that thicc booty, she was basically a unpaid servant (wink wink) probably ate bread and water
cinderella realistically wouldnt be fat, she'd be malnourished and look like the starved kids you see in the food donation adverts
Jasmine
Not sure why you where downvoted, she could definitely beat you up
Load More Replies...I agree. But even when I am at my "ideal weight" my arms are fatter than the rest. :/
Load More Replies...I feel like people are forgetting these are teenagers, not middle aged women.
teenagers do have ribs those don't grow after 30 like some people think
Load More Replies...To imply that her legs aren’t sticks and that she actually has flesh
Load More Replies...It would make sense for her to be bigger, because since she’s the princess, she would be fed better and not be starving.
Princess Tiana
Aw that's so sweet 🤍 you're mom must be gorgeous, ofc she'd be even if she didn't look like Disney princess 😘
Load More Replies...I see no difference in beauty or style. Why couldn't we just do all of them like this? No one would notice
My favorite too. I love frogs so much. They're just babies. Also the plot and songs were good. Mama Odie the best.
Excuse meeee 🥺 IT'S TIANA FROM PRINCESS AND THE FROG 🐸, FRIEND !!!
Load More Replies..."Overall there has been an enormous amount of positivity and appreciation for these illustrations," Wyethe added. "I receive messages every day saying how these images have helped heal their inner child. That makes it so worthwhile to me."
But we should remember that there's more to her art than this series. "While I do appreciate the love I have gotten from these drawings, as an artist this is not what I focus on. I may make more videos from time to time, but I have no desire to pursue this any further than a therapeutic exercise."
Mulan
what the f^ck is wrong with you?! you're a perv who needs to get his a$$ of this site. i hope karma hits you hard ya b!tch
Load More Replies...Jasmine
so you were beautiful either way? i bet you were :)
Load More Replies...not gonna downvote cause ik you mean well... but no
Load More Replies...Princess Aurora
Honestly, now that I look at this then the before looks VERY unhealthy…
She'd also be unnaturally thin, can't eat in a coma. Even a magically induced one
And we wonder why girls get a negative body image, Disney could so easily go forward with realistic body portrayal.
She looks about 5 or 6 months pregnant in the second one. Something to remember about a lot of these outfits (although certainly not all) is that they’d be corseted, so the ability to have a very cinched waist isn’t so out of the question, especially if we remember that we’re looking at cartoons, which are always stylized representations of people, and aren’t meant to be photorealistic depictions of an average human being.
Even so, before she was wearing fancy attire and things that would require corsets in the movie, her waist looked unhealthily tiny
Load More Replies...as a relatively skinny person, we already get enough love in mainstream media. learn to let other people shine. <3
Load More Replies...Princess Tiana
I do like her thicker but Anika (the actress) is thin in that manner.
Load More Replies...She already had a realistic body frame she was based off of her voice actor who looked the same way.
The classic Disney movies have long been criticized for the problematic messages they transmit to impressionable girls, including the idea that you need a man to be happy, that you should wait around until you meet the man of your dreams, and that, once you marry the prince, you will live happily ever after.
But the image of feminine physical perfection often takes center stage when it comes to criticism towards the studio. For example, in their paper 'Mirror, mirror on the wall: Whose figure is the fairest of them all?', anthropologist Toe Aung of Pennsylvania State University and independent researcher Leah Williams said, "Disney princesses have extremely small waist-to-hip ratios that are nearly impossible to achieve naturally."
Princess Tiana
yeah, disney animators tiana has an a*s now! how do you feel about that? but seriously shes gorgeous! ❤️
And ppl are also a little more. And a lot of us have grown up with an image in our mind that we *have* to be skinny with big breasts and hips. We don't mean to shame you at all, we promise 🤍 we just want to show and remind ourselves that we don't need to be or look like that. And relive our inner child. Ok. We are so sorry and you're beautiful. Everyone is beautiful no matter what 😉😘
Load More Replies...Are you referring to yourself, Gavin?
Load More Replies...Rapunzel
I know people who look like Rapunzuls body shape. It is still a normal body, she doesn't have to gain weight in every photo. She looks good in both. Some people just look like that. We're all different. And while Disney makes heavier people feel insecure, if it was like this it would make Skinnier people feel worse about themselves as well.
not all young people, there are different body types.
Load More Replies...Elsa
Because she sat in her room all her life not doing much but crying and freezing the place.
Load More Replies...Why does it look like the decorative edge on the bodice of the dress digs into her body on the right? That's not accurate to how a dress like this would be constructed. It is a decorative edge (the bodice is separate from the skirt) and not an elastic waistband. You don't want the edge of the bodice digging into your hip.
Ariel
I mean, I love it, but I wanna see Ariel with muscles. She swims all day everyday. Give me toned Ariel lol XD
It seems all these better "average" looking bodies aren't showing any diversity, just fatter bodies.
Load More Replies...serously the first one dont even make sense tho B***H DID URSULA HARVEST YOUR ORGANS OR SOMETHING
First one: skeleton washed ashore. Second one: walrus on a cliff. Can't he do something in between? I mean, she is swimming in the ocean all day long. She is in need of an extra protective layer, but she also must have more muscles too.
(from experience) since she doesnt have much clothing in this scene and her body is posed in a way that it bends a bit, she looks a bit bigger. I hope this helps
Load More Replies...Skinny shaming is making someone feel bad for being skinny. The artist is just making it so these princesses have internal organs.
Load More Replies...Aung and Williams argue that such characters "might heighten or reinforce our preference for lower waist-to-hip ratios, and the perception that physically attractive individuals with lower waist-to-hip ratios possess morally favorable qualities."
So instead of building girls' self-esteem, the way these princesses look might actually bring the opposite result in the long run.
Cinderella
Ok. Please don’t downvote me, but for her to have small breasts and not a lot ofwaist is good to me. Because she was so young. But her waist, of course, like her stomach, could be somewhat bigger so she isn’t so thin. She is still kinda thin, but for a teenager who hasn’t had much food and been worked a lot, being a bit thinner is expected. But the second one looks amazing! It looks so much like me to be honest. I think my breast are just slightly bigger, because I matured so early. I’m 13, 14. I mean, the original isn’t as bad as the Ariel originals. Sheesh. Why is Ariel so incredibly thin.
A great example of why the original characters are designed that way. There is a clearer silhouette and more simple shape helps the lead animator, the inbetween animator, the clean up artist and the cell painter to create a consistent animation. That’s the reasoning behind it.
that does make some sense. less paint to have to use is cheaper
Load More Replies...I dont know about this one.. She didnt eat properly and did all the house work. I feel like she would be skinny and muscular.
Stop say skinny shaming 💀 You said that on most of the photos here
Load More Replies...Rapunzel
Funny how it now looks like she's older on the right, simply because she's fuller (if that's the correct wording)
Yes correct wording and I agree it now looks appropriate to me cause she does look young!
Load More Replies...Pink Aesthetic, that’s not fat. That’s what’s expected. At least, what I expect because that’s what my body is like. But yeah, she is, like, under 20 (I think. Right?) so yeah, she would be a little bit skinnier, at least, I think so.
Load More Replies...Belle
Seriously, Disney. It’s not a big difference but it makes a difference. Get with the times.
I’m right here reading your slightly rude comments so fact busted
Load More Replies...Meg
She looks so much better- the original looked like a beanpole 😅 I love her new face shape too
I agree, the face shape makes her look more sassy
Load More Replies...isn't this new version a little more accurate for ancient Greek beauty standards anyway?
Again, in Meg's case she'd probably be too thin as well. She was being used and abused and forced to do things
She literally looked like a stick before, she looks so much better now
in Greek times, the "perfect body" for women was having a fuller figure. just take a look at many sculptures of women from that time. hope this helps
Load More Replies...It's also a more accurate portrail of what kind of body would have been considered desirable in Ancient Greece
But since beauty is a subjective trait, Aung and Williams focused on a measurable quality: the female characters' waist-to-hip ratio.
Using screenshots, they determined the "minimum waist and maximum hip widths" for 11 official Disney princesses, and the main characters of the phenomenally popular Frozen as well as seven Disney villains, including Maleficent from The Sleeping Beauty and Ursula from The Little Mermaid.
Princess Aurora
still has completely """realistic""" triangular breasts, just like real women, lol
The waste got wider but the cheeks never get fuller or anything.... on any of them
Meg
It's a guess from me, but Disney draws inspiration from the country they're portraying's artstyle. I saw it in the first Mulan, and in Hercules. I kind of think Megara looks a lot like drawings/paintings on the more ancient pottery from Greece. But it could just be me, I'm not an art/culture expert by any meens.
Load More Replies...why is it okay for people to say "oh my god she looks like a stick, please make her fuller," but if I were to say "oh my god she's too curvy please make her skinnier" I'd get banished to Mars? PLEASE normalize ALL body types, including slim. Everyone gets insecure about their body--even if you consider them beautiful. ALL body shapes are beautiful and ALL deserve to be loved.
I think Megara would have been a good one to portray as a real anorexic, to show that being too thin is also not going to look like that usually.
Princess Aurora
I love her dress! I love the colours and the style! And she looks so amazing in that second drawing! I love it!!
Cinderella's body. On the left, you can see little space between her arm and her torso. On the right, there is no space. Also, the skirt is wider on the right one.
Load More Replies...Princess Tiana
They found the median waist-to-hip ratio of the characters was a ridiculously low 0.535, meaning their waist measurement is just 53 percent of their hip measurement.
That is far below the 0.7 that is widely accepted as ideal and, surprisingly, even lower than that of the traditional Barbie doll, which is 0.56.
Such an hourglass figure is "nearly impossible to achieve naturally," the researchers highlighted.
Belle And Adam
I never cared for the design they gave the human Beast. He actually looks a lot better filled out.
I was never 'into' human beast; he was WEIRDLY hotter AS BEAST beast..... idk WHAT to do w that.....
Load More Replies...They finally fixed the proportions of the prince to. They both look better
Meg
Prince Eric
i'm sorry but this is awful, they completely changed the character design (excluding clothes). his jawline, chin shape, & nose shape were completely changed, even though these features are bone/cartilage structure & would stay the same if someone gained weight. not only that, but making him look like a middle-aged dad defeats the purpose of his character; he's the love interest of a teen, not the Tinder date of a newly divorced mom.
He looks like my 16 year old neighbor lmao what are you talking about.
Load More Replies...I don't feel like this is more responsive, considering Eric was a very active man, doing a lot of sailing and living by the sea, is think he would eat a lot of fresh fish, so I don't feel like he'd be softer than the original. Bulkier with muscle, yes
Cinderella
In her case, she was most likely starved by her stepfamily, so she would be more sickly-thin?
I wanted to write exact the same. She was malnourished teenage girl.
Load More Replies...The Artist that did the Photoshop sadly doesn't know how a dress like this (vaguely mid 19th century ballgown inspired) would be constructed and tailored to fit the body (no matter the body shape). This looks a bit like a cheap costume (the top just a single layer of elastic fabric, no support, no shaping, that ends too low under the natural waist, with the skirt looking like its sown on (or else slipping of the hips)). Notice how in the left the bodice is at it's thinnest, barely flares out just a teeny tiny bit, and then the floofy skirt begins? This should still be the case even with a realistic waist.
In the original, her waist is smaller than her head. In real life you would have to remove ribs and wear a tight corset all the time to get that pinched look
Well, considering that she does all the chores around the house by herself, it wouldn't be too surprising if she were ripped. ;-)
Load More Replies...Ok, Cinderella and aurora I feel are the only exceptions because, Aurora was in a coma and Cinderella was worked and starved. Working doesn’t always make you have big muscles, some people don’t gain them and especially malnourished people. But it’s still kinda weird how they are so pinched in the middle. Because my older sister who’s about the same age as all of the princesses, is quite thin but she’s not pinched so much on the middle like that. I love the second one though
Ariel
She's a young woman that swims ALL DAY UNDERWATER eats kelp. She wouldn't be fat and flabby, at least give her a swimmer's body.
Uh huh. A princess that spends all her time in the ocean, using her whole body to move that big tail has stomach fat. Does a dolphin have excess body fat? This “artist” doesn’t swim or animate.
why jump the board to extreme... from all that swimming she could have a realistical athletic body ...
She's a mermaid. She would swim/stay situated in water most of the day of, beside casually daydreaming on a rock. Is it really that wrong to assume she's of a different species from real human beigns, and maybe could have a swimmers body build or otherwise? Maybe even another eye/skin colour than the very pale, danish, maybe blue eyed author of the fairytale, who always stayed in Europe in his lifetime? - But who also listened of the tales from beyond the continent, and made them his own..?
Lol, I hate this c**p, "let's make everyone obese, that's normality" no, that's laziness, not a good message pal, not good.
Belle
Princess Kida Atlantis
Ariel
The only thing here is that she actually is wearing a corset, so it's conceivable she might look pretty thin.
Mulan
The scene actually takes place after she comes back from war and her father describes her as the flower that blooms from adversity and that being “the most beautiful of all.” I can see why you thought as you thought, though, since her outfit when she meets the matchmaker is very similar to this one!
Load More Replies...I feel like if she is going to have this much muscle her shoulders should be a little wider, it looks a little weird here
Meg
oh come on. are you seriously nitpicking the body types in the movie hercules?? look at her hair: that should be enough indication to you that this movie is extremely stylized & does not represent reality at all. whining that the bodies aren't realistic in a super cartoony cartoon is just acting like a victim because you want to be a victim.
Mulan
Only thing with this redo is is that in this scene, it's before her leaving home so she wouldn't have gone through all that training yet.

Am i the only one who watched cartoons knowing they *weren't* real people and wouldn't look like such? Like, I was a little kid, I didnn't care about realism
isn't shaming someone for being thin the same thing this is supposed to be protesting? (been nice knowin' ya. i'll be banned after this for sure!)
Being fat and over weight is not healthy and people need to stop normalizing it. I'm not being mean or calling out over weight people, but its just science facts. We don't need to be rail thin either though. Even chubby isn't good. This needs to be taught at young age. You need to maintain a healthy weight.
Do these cartoons really look fat and overweight to you?
Load More Replies...Too thin is bad, too big is bad. This illustrator went from one bad to another. Also ignores the story in some case, like Cinderella would be thin AF, wasn't like her family would feed her well enough to get normal sized let alone fat
Yes, the 'befores' are unrealistically skinny, but they are also out of proportion. They are not real people, they're cartoons! Do kids think that all mice wear gloves and have 3 fingers & a thumb? What hurts young women is photos of real celebrities that have been photoshopped. Making these cartoon images more chunky isn't fixing anything.
Also the glorification of plastic surgery. We're not being healthier, still making the poor diet choices only now we're sucking it out surgically and then STILL are photoshopping.
Load More Replies...This body positivity is getting out of hand, it’s a very smart and needed revolution but handled in such a stupid and superficial way most of the time. Like celebrating fat instead. Most of those are not heathy body, they might be common bodies in the US because of how unhealthy most of your diet is (and I don’t want to be offensive) but they are not healthy. Now let’s really celebrate healthy bodies instead of celebrate just a different and more common way to have an unhealthy body just for pleasing people.
So many of these alterations were not about adding fat but about adding organs and a functioning skeletal system.
Load More Replies...As an animator myself, cartoons are supposed to be exaggerations of reality. Outrageous proportions are a part of that. However, taking the same characters, and trying to normalise obesity/being overweight as being something that should be accepted, is not something I jive with. I'm not saying be anorexic (the same applies with the reverse of obesity, obviously), but the radical ends of each spectrum are not healthy. You don't see the people who want to normalise being obese saying it's okay to be too thin. They're hypocrites. They'll call that person unhealthy because they're too thin, whilst sitting there 15kg overweight. It needs to stop.
As an animator, you should tailor your characters to your target audience. If it is adults, sure, the originals are fine. For kids though, they internalize subconsciously and don't realize it. It starts as young as 3. There have been studies on it. On another note, this artist did make characters a little unnecessarily pudgy in some pics
Load More Replies...I don't like how they are all just filled out a little more... What about different body types... tall / short ... muscular . there is more than just thin and chunky
Should the characters be depicted smoking cigarettes, drinking to excess, and abusing drugs too? Why not normalize other unhealthy choices to signal our acceptance of others.
Unhealthy choices or actual human-like proportions? Pretty sure giving Mulan an athletic body type is normalizing a healthy choice.
