I'm honestly fed up with all the bad and fake news everywhere. I am not a journalist or an influencer, but I want to use my art to spread some positivity.

I wanted to create an almanac of positive as an anti-venom to the vitriolic rhetoric that pervades our media. That's why I want to share some of this year's positive news from around the world in the hope that it brings you some happiness and inspires you to spread some good news yourself!

Art, technology, food, science, animal rights, human rights... we have progressed in so many categories, and it's necessary to let the world know that, despite having much more to do, we've accomplished some amazing things in 2018. So although it is hard - stay positive.

This is great. Here in Brazil, supermarkets and restaurants avoid donating food even when they actually wanted to because the food donated continues to be the donor's responsibility, so if, for example, it' poorly transported or stored and goes bad and someone eats it and gets sick, it's your store that will get in trouble even if it was fine when you donated, so they're all scared of donating.

The name of the Brewery is Saltwater Brewery. All of the rings are made out of the barley and grains used in the brewing process. So they are completely edible by humans and sea creatures.

I have mixed feelings about pandas.... because people mostly only care about protecting "cute" animals like them. I've read and watched so many times about how "ugly" animals like bugs and amphibians are always getting worse off because all the conservation funds and efforts go towards the ones the public likes... But I guess helping some animals is still better than no animals.

If more people would recycle plastic, that would be a good start. I'm appalled at all the trash I see thrown away, that could have been recycled. And not just plastic. My son and I were discussing today the problem of plastic straws. Why couldn't they be made of a fast-degrading material, or even paper? They are only going to be used one time, and can end up in the sea or landfills, taking who knows how long to degrade.

I wasn't diagnosed until I was in my 40s. It's really hard to detect in girls for the simple reason that all the emphasis is placed on boys' symptoms. It's the same with heart attacks. Everybody knows about classic male symptoms. Fewer people know how differently it presents in women.

@Jeff: I so agree. In almost every case of school shootings, and other mass shootings, the shooter had significant mental health issues. Often, they had stopped getting treatment, stopped taking their meds, etc. Mass shootings are as much a mental health issue, as a gun control issue.

Good news from a purely ecological point of view. Bad news for the people who make a living in the coal-mining industry. Ironically, it's exactly today that the last coal-mine in my area closes, leaving many unemployed. Maybe someone should finance projects that help these people get new jobs.

Yeah, and, to no-one's surprise, closely followed by Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Sweden. I was initially shocked to see Sweden so low on the list, but when I saw the actual figures, I realised these countries are statistically so close together, that they'll just keep rotating for the No.1 spot for the foreseeable future. Or, of course, you can take Fox News' word for it that these are in fact hell-holes where Muslim refugees rape anything in sight and where Sharia law will be introduced any day now...

In most G20 countries it's legal to terminate *human* pregnancies, and a majority of people in those same countries aren't strict vegetarians. Selling vat meat as unethical because of bovine abortion isn't going to convince that many people, I'm afraid.

Unless you live somewhere in the woods eating only wild plants, almost every crop you eat, wear or otherwise make use of has been domesticated and selectively bred by humans over hundreds or even thousands of years to conform to our desires. And since you're on the Internet, I'm going to guess that you're not living in a hut somewhere.

Soylent Green was supposed to be disturbing because it was cannibalism, not because it was lab-grown. Technically, Soylent Green would be more "natural" than protein from a vat.

If you're not a vegetarian, you literally eat the corpses of dead animals. Arguing against lab-grown meat on aesthetic grounds is perhaps not the most solid tack to take. (I'm not judging. I eat meat. I just acknowledge that it's not especially consistent to get all prissy about synthetic meat being "gross".)

Livestock and livestock production is a huge income for rural families. It is also key to long term environmental care and conservation. I wouldn’t list this as a good thing. http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?script=sci_arttext&pid=S0103-20032015000600063

Full of literally nothing but animal protein and fat. The chemicals are in the cows drinking polluted water, eating things grown in polluted soil and animal excrement, standing in their own filth and being injected with cocktails of things to pump them up and keep them alive long enough to turn into meat.

All those people screaming about GMOs. Um I'll stick with "REAL MEAT" (as opposed to soylent green).

Everybody making soylent green comments seem to miss the fact that soylent green is real meat. "Soylent Green is people!"

I hope this is a success, I'm not a vegetarian, but I feel so conflicted about the animals being slaughtered. I wish being a vegetarian was easier, but we are omnivores by nature.

We are indeed omnivores by nature. Which is great, because with all the variety of food we have in the first world countries it's up to us if we eat meat. If we were carnivorous it would probably be a biological issue. But as high civilization omnivores we're free to decide on a moral base ;)

And I as a vegetarian will be able to have "fake" meat that tastes exactly the same as any real meat. And it will save the lives of so many animals! My mom is a vegetarian too and we have talked about this before.

Every one of those animals will still be systematically slaughtered and turned into meat, the difference is that when we're done there will be a select few left for hobby farmers and the species will otherwise be extinct. Releasing them would be an unmitigated environmental disaster on an insane scale.

Everything you eat is "GMO". It has been selectively bred by humans to conform to our desires. Modern gene engineering is in many cases geared toward producing crops that resist pests and drought while increasing nutritional value, thereby reducing the need for pesticides, irrigation and deforestation.

Again...if you eat meat, you eat animal corpses. You don't exactly have the aesthetic high ground here.

Not being negative but does that mean the need for keeping livestock will drop? So it could mean you won't see cows and sheep as much in the future

Yes, they will just breed them less. I don’t think a reduction in the cow population is a big concern. They will still be used for dairy, and sheep for wool. Those animals are far from endangered.

I am not a great meat eater, but I would fear the health implications of lab-grown

Yeah, it'll be missing those years of antibiotics, steroids and animal s**t to really healthify it
