No person is perfect, so a perfect parent is someone that doesn’t exist, either. But some parents could really benefit from a course or two, or a reality check, at least.

If you’re wondering what kind of parent that would be, we have a few examples that paint a pretty colorful picture. You can find them on the list below, where we have put some images showing just how ignorant or out of touch some moms and dads are. If you thought yours were difficult, you might find yourself changing your mind by the time you reach the end of the list.

Below, you will find not only the images but also Bored Panda’s interview with Dr. Yvonne M. Vissing, Professor of Healthcare Studies at Salem State University and the Founding Director of the Salem State University Center for Childhood and Youth Studies in Massachusetts, who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions about parental influence.

In the Netherlands we have the "Bible Belt", a string of villages with extreme orthodox protestants who refused any vaccin. Many of their children got polio and were badly handicapped for the rest of their lives. For some of these children death would have been easier than their handicaps, having to live with paralyzed legs in braces, or worse. I had a friend back then who had to live like this and he hated his parents for it, continuously fighting depression. I felt so sorry for this beautiful guy.

"Super bugs" are not a result of vaccines but rather of antibiotics being used incorrectly/too often. Like in the cases when a child develops a vaccine-preventable disease.

This is base level evolution at its finest. The world needs this level of commitment to the cause, if my children die due to being unvaccinated and weak then that’s making the human race stronger, if they survive then that’s strengthening the race too. I can’t congratulate this person enough. PS my daughter and I are vaccinated, I’m not committed to their cause 😂

I started school at age 6. We don't learn any letters in kindergarten. I didn't know a word of English until 5th grade. And I can spell necessary. But I agree, I think the school like kindergarten in the US is too much. Let the kids be kids for a while.

In my country kids usually start school the term before their 5th birthday or sometimes the September before. Often the start at nursery school a year earlier. It’s all pretty relaxed until they’re older; it doesn’t seem to traumatise us. It just depends on what you’re used to.

With my god kids, when I babysat, I used to read to them and with them from an early age, which their parents did too. For example - "Which word is duck?" and they would then point it out and get a forehead kiss with a "Yeays! That's right!". It's never too early to learn... Plus? Kindergarten isn't just about learning, it's about learning social skills such as sharing, making friends etc. Then there's possibly spotting a child who may have a learning disability such as dyslexia. The earlier one is spotted, the earlier they can get help with it.

No, but attending school as early as 3 is important for social development. Even kindergarten is mostly learning disguised as play. Most of what we think of as formal schooling doesn't really start until 6 or 7, at least in the US.

It is SO sad how many children are not getting these basic things with their families (reading to them, playing board games, helping with easy chores, going to playgrounds/for walks, socializing with other kids). Every year we get more and more kids without these fundamental experiences coming to school and being completely overwhelmed by it. They just want their tablets.

FWIW, some kids start schooling themselves. Read to them, let them see what written words you're pronouncing, and learning happens. Or keep books around and let them explore. Or take them to the library. We've long known that we seem to have a limited-time open window to learn language. Keeping that window closed doesn't help kids.

Parenting can be a headache, there’s no doubt about that. But, being a child can come with a set of challenges, too, especially when living with somewhat difficult parents.

The latter can come in all shapes and sizes: some might be too controlling, and others—not care at all. Some might yell constantly or use the silent treatment as a way to solve everything. Then, there are the parents who need to be parented themselves, which doesn’t give the child much of a normal childhood, either. Whatever the case, it doesn’t make the child’s life any easier and is likely to affect them for years, if not decades, to come.

My best friend has a daughter, living on welfare all her life, throwing babies into the world from the age of 16. Finally, after the ninth, she had to stop doing that because her body couldn't take it anymore. Her reason for having so many babies while living on tax money was that she put 9 taxpayers into the world, so she took responsibility. However, only the eldest two are taxpayers, and they were not raised by this mom, but by their fathers and grandparents. The other 7 are in and out of prison or hooked up with babies at the age of 16, also living on welfare. It is really flabbergasting how some mothers believe in their own fairytales.

Hitting a child with a belt or ANYTHING should be illegal. It's child abuse and if you hit your child you should be charged with assault. My husband grew up with horrific child abuse. He has been beaten, shot, burned and starved. His parents had 5 children and he is the only one who grew up and will absolutely not lay a finger on his children. I have seen his brother punch a 5 year old like a man, his sister break her six year olds lip open by smacking him with the remote control, his other sister beat her baby's legs so he would stay still while changing his diaper. Yes I called CPS and nothing happened they just told everyone it was us who reported. Then ironically my mother sued me for custody of my child and won. We got 1 hour of supervised visits a month. And they had no evidence just words and lies. And of course my in laws affidavits saying they witnessed child abuse since we called CPS on them. Funny story- you only get a free lawyer when Social Services takes your kid away. If you live somewhere corrupt enough and have enough money you can take anyone's kid away. He was 2. They lost in regular family court for emergency temporary custody so they appealed to circuit court and won full permanent custody. And people like this just make me SO ANGRY

Yes, children are called to honor and obey their parents (Exodus 20:12; Ephesians 6:1–2, Colossians 3:20), but parents must not abuse their authority. They must treat their children with dignity, respect, patience, and love. Parents are called to encourage their children. They do this by teaching each child the principles of God’s Word and promoting life-affirming, positive creativity in the child, stirring him to have confidence in his God-given uniqueness and to believe that he can do what he otherwise may never have achieved.

Unfortunately, poor parenting is not something that’s easy to change. To make matters worse, it can become a cycle, as certain parenting techniques that people experience as kids might later be used with their own children. One study suggests that poor parenting can be passed down from one generation to the other, NBC News reports. The authors found that the more adverse childhood experiences a person had, the more likely their offspring were to be troubled, too, as early as the time they turned five.

“We found that 91 percent of parents had at least one adverse childhood experience, while 45 percent had four or more,” said one of the researchers behind the study, Anne-Marie Conn of the University of Rochester Medical Center. “And among their young children, 72 percent had already experienced at least one adverse childhood experience.”

It's nice to hear from the BP members, but seriously is no-one going to comment on the strangeness of nursing at 4.5 years old? Totally extracting any social concerns, breast milk is naturally designed to give specific benefits to BABIES. These include high fat content because of their huge energy needs as they grow, a transfer of hormones and antibodies from the mother to protect the baby etc. Still nursing now cannot be good for the mother, and will be viewed by society at large as extremely odd for the child. The bullying that child will face if any other children ever find out...

Nursing a child varies but a 4 + year old is almost ready for preschool/kindergarten so WEAN YOUR CHILD ALREADY! The old Paleo people during the days of mammoths nursed longer than 2 years but kids with teeth are ready to use them.

Circumcision should be illegal until the age of consent. That's my unpopular opinion, due to deaths, scarring, and mutilation that happens to millions of babies every year. Both male AND female (yes in Africa it is practiced in back rooms and most women have it done before 10 because they are eligable to marry when period hits).

I hope not but 50 years back I knew a woman who claimed her son was talking at 6 months. Eventually I worked out that it was a combination of exaggerating his abilities plus she was lying about his age because she was pregnant when she married 🤦‍♀️

Talking about how people’s detrimental experiences as kids can affect their own style of parenting later in life, Conn noted that it’s not easy to break patterns of behavior. “You were brought up in an adverse environment and that is what you know,” she said.

Take spanking, for instance. If they were spanked while growing up, some people might consider that a normal way of disciplining misbehaving children. But, individuals who want to break out of the cycle of poor parenting might think twice about doing that or find a way to change their ways completely.

I think what annoys me most is antivaxxers saying diseases are natural and we need to have the diseases to develop antibodies. What the eff do you think vaccines are? They’re a carefully controlled dose of the disease or antibodies that (gasp) allows your immune system to develop antibodies without you dying. I call that a win.

“What the eff do you think vaccines are?”: An absolutely astounding number of these fools believe that vaccines allow the government to follow their whereabouts at all times, as if Mrs Paranoidpants and what she does is so interesting. These hilariously stupid people haven’t taken so much as two seconds to realize that they *themselves* have elected to carry around a tracking device on their persons 24/7 and so have no NEED of a vaccine to obtain a tracking device if such a device were to exist! (The most horrifying part of all of this to me is that these dopes believe that we have *batteries* and antennas available that are sooo tiny they can fit through a needle used for injections! And that the batteries are apparently self-recharging (because they didn’t come with instructions to recharge them, of course!). It’s one thing not to have a milligram of tech savvyness, but to have the tech savvyness of an earthworm is just … I have no words. 😞

Discussing the topic of bad parenting, Professor of Healthcare Studies at Salem State University, Dr. Yvonne M. Vissing, noted that some people might not even understand that their parenting methods can be detrimental to their offspring.

“I think that most parents believe they are caring and responsible, but the manner in which they interact with their children can be quite concerning,” she told Bored Panda in a recent interview. “If a parent is overtly dangerous to a child, they can be reported to child protective services. The problem is that most outsiders are scared to report them (even if they are mandated reporters) because of retaliation.

“Also, children are scared to divulge maltreatment a) because they may see it as normative and not understand that they are abused, b) they fear retaliation from parents if they ‘squeal’ about how they are really being treated.”

I claim the title of the Ultimate Not A Reall Mother. I had a C-section, didn't breastfeed, and didn't hold my baby until she was 1 month old. I had a sudden medical emergency my daughter was delivered via emergency c-section @ 26 weeks, my health continued to decline, wound up in a medically induced coma for 3 weeks on a vent in the ICU. How selfish of me to call myself a mother. My daughter did great she's now a normal happy healthy 7 year old. I recovered as well.

Woooow! I have 3 kids and they arrived quite differently: first was a normal birth and I was totally loving the laughing gas they provided for me at the hospital (but didn't feel it when she came out), second happened real fast and I had her without any pain control besides my breathing technique (actually the best birth of the three!) And the third was a c-section. I do not understand why some women choose c-section because they think it'll be easier or less "dramatic" for their body or whatever. It was HORRIBLE to heal from it, imo. It caused me so much anxiety for about a year afterwards and it was so uncomfortable for months on end to heal from it, physically. Anyways, my point is that I am as much a mother to my 3rd kid as I am to my first 2. It is HARD to have a c-section, imo.

That's a stupid practice too, but ear holes will eventually heal up if they aren't kept open by jewellery. This is more true in children who have more stem cells and more regenerative capability than adults. Tatoos won't fade for decades, or will require painful (very painful) and expensive laser treatment to remove.

“What a child experiences in the first few years of life sets the stage for their development and their perceptions,” Dr. Vissing continued, emphasizing the importance of parental influence.

“There are many programs, such as Harvard's Center for the Developing Child, that focus on the importance of age zero to three as the critical time for child development. This is before many children can speak, so parents may think their children don't get what's going on, but they do.

“Studies by physicians at Yale and other institutions find (by taking blood samples and looking for hormones and other measures of stress) that by the time they are three months old, children who are facing adverse child experiences (aces) have markedly different levels than those who are well-nurtured. Therefore, early love and support is central to the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive development of a child; it starts when a child is born,” the expert emphasized.

If they tumble, even slightly, that child might lose her legs. There is NO protection whatsoever for those tiny vulnerable legs, not even jeans-legs, like her dad has. In an Ambulance TV-show, I saw two older teenagers on one of those motorized scooters that had collided with a car. The girl had several broken bones and some ruptured internal organs, and had to stay in hospital for months. The guy didn't make it.

Came here to say exactly this. The reason you are told to complete the course of antibiotics is to make sure that all traces of the bacteria are gone. If any survive, they may have developed a resistance to the antibiotics and if you then pass the infection on to someone else, you have a very difficult to treat outbreak of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Antibiotics should only be used where necessary and when used you should complete the course and if they don't shift the infection go back to the doctor.

Dr. Vissing noted that such “parenting techniques” as spanking a child, hitting them, or telling them how bad they are have been found to be associated with a host of problem behaviors and conditions in children. “For example, kids who are hit when they are ‘bad’ learn that violence is a suitable problem-solving strategy for when someone is upset. They will then hit their parents, siblings, peers, or lovers later on.

“Teaching children how to control their emotions and solve conflicts in a positive, nonviolent, and respectful way has been shown to create people who are themselves nonviolent, respectful, and kind,” the expert pointed out.

We need to normalise periods and treat them like any other bodily function, however we don’t need to discuss someone else’s periods, that’s theirs to do or indeed not do. My daughter knows that I (single Dad) am clued up as I can be, that’s my job, equally it’s her choice whether she comes to me, she has plenty of access to advice from the women in her life. She also knows that anything we discuss (or don’t discuss) is completely private and not the subject of a social media post.

It shouldn't be embarrassing and in many cultures it is a celebrated right of passage into womanhood. While every child is entitled to privacy, so doing this without their consent is wrong, being embarrassed of a biological function needed to create life is also wrong.

It's a well-known fact that kids (especially first world kids) are starting their periods earlier and earlier (often, not always). Get a grip, be supportive. Get a selection, talk to her about flow etc. Don't make a big deal about it and make her feel paranoid or like she's 'different' or there's something wrong with her. YOU ARE THE ADULT.

Discussing this extremely sensitive issue with Bored Panda, Dr. Vissing noted that many people learn how to interact with children the same way their parents did. “They may say they didn't like what their parents did, but when they become parents, they may try one or two different strategies themselves; and if those don't work, they default to what they learned when they were children.

“When pregnant, parents may go to parenting classes but usually they are focused on how to get the baby out of your body and not what to do with them when you take them home.”

They can't do that now unless they are fully private practice. If it's a hospital system pediatric the doctors don't have a choice. I'm a medical scheduler for 48 Pediatric, Primary Care and Internal Medicine offices and we get a few calls a week asking if our providers will take un-vaxed kids. These are the type of people that vote for Republicans, who will then allow businesses to dump waste into their drinking water. Then complain that their tap water is bad. I lived in a conservative area for a while, and our drinking water was contaminated with lead and hexavalent chromium (a carcinogen), because they weren't regulating what companies were dumping. We couldn't just put a filter on our tap, because that doesn't remove those chemicals. I ended up buying a water cooler, and paying for a water service to deliver safe drinking water. My neighbors always complained about the unsafe tap water, but they weren't about to vote to regulate those companies dumping the water, or increase their taxes to pay to clean up the water supply. People are stupid

I doubt the child drinking 3-5 bottles of water if the bottle contains 1500-2000 ml water. More likely, he drinks about 1.5-2.5 l water per day, that amount is roughly 8 glasses of water.

Good lord. My oldest was was 7lbs, 2oz and 22 inches long (average is ~18 inches). She was so slender, I even worried that she wasn't gaining enough weight a few weeks later (doc said she was fine because her growth chart showed growth, but it was just length instead of weight). Even at 11, she's still super tall and all knees and elbows like her dad was!

20 miles in 7 hours is 2.86 mph - that's walking pace for an adult. So obviously, the actual marathon *running* support has long gone. Taking a 6 year old on a 26 mile hike? Well, maybe, if they're up for it, but carry your own food, drink, and shelter and plan proper breaks including naps. Remind me again about why we're not allowed to slap parents like that around the face?

As if you can see stress fractures developing out on the race course. The fact that they even had to bribe him meant he was already running through pain. Absolutely terrible parents.

Horrible parenting. There are special kid marathons that are an appropriate length for kids. So if your kid has an interest in running and says they wanna run a marathons, let them experience it in that way, instead of forcing a kid to run for way too long.

Yes. That is too young. And most places in the US you have to be 16. My daughter ran her first half at 16 and didn't run a full until 26. But, just to vent a bit. If you say there will be Pringles at mike 20, have Pringles at mile 20! Slow a*s 5 k'er here. My nephew walked his first 5 k last summer (at 5 and no he wasn't coerced and would have been allowed to stop at any time). I was told they took up the timing mat before he finished (no time limit was posted). I was so mad. I said they were lucky slow a*s Auntie wasn't there. Everyone deserves an official time if there's no posted limit. And this child deserved his Pringles. Rant over.

The school cannot make use of natural meds because of legal problems. If you do not want to supply the school with prescribed medication for desperate circumstances, then you will have to make yourself available ALWAYS during school hours to help your child. Since the decision not to use medication is yours, you are responsible; not the school.

So when I was working in a rural part of the DRC I got to personally witness somebody dying of tetanus. It was a horrible thing to see. Their muscles cramped so badly that their bones broke, and they couldn't breath because the muscles controlling the lungs wouldn't function. This poor child's jaw was broken from clenching his teeth so hard. Luckily he was able to get evacuated to a hospital for treatment. I guarantee you that had that boy's mother been given the option of a tetanus shot, she would have jumped at it. I think people who refuse to vaccinate their kids should be flogged in the public square, before being stripped of custody rights, and then sterilized.

You do not contract tetanus from a dog bite. If the dog had not received it's rabies vaccine, then yes, the child might have contracted rabies.

It is unlikely that a nip from a dog that is well cared for will transmit any illness to a child. HOWEVER, a dog's mouth is not perfectly clean and so the wound needs to be cleaned with an antiseptic and perhaps bandaged to prevent infection. There are topical medications to use that can be bought OTC at a drugstore. Ask the pharmacist what is indicated.

Yep. Our daughter was a preemie and had a lengthy NICU stay. We weren't even allowed to carry her out in the car seat ourselves. A nurse had to do it. Hospital policy, apparently. A bit ridiculous, but I didn't care as I just wanted to get my baby home.

I recommend a (safe!!!) seat in the style of this one for the first year. Then a seat that can be turned so you can have the kid driving backwards and forewards - spend the extra money on one that lets you buckle up the kid when turned towards the door, it really does save your back! These two will suffice until kiddo is 3-4. Then look further

Spanking in general has been proven to be bad enough, but spanking so hard that it leaves bruises and welts? At that point it's just a beating, and of what sounds to be a preschooler no less. Hope the parent got caught.

I am shocked at the comment of “the car seat straps keep sliding off so I don’t use them”, rather than thinking something isn’t adjusted right? Also, have any of these people actually tried explaining to the kids why they shouldn’t do certain things? I find a lot of kids stop doing dangerous things if you actually explain that it is dangerous.

I got married young, 18. She was 29 had 2 kids. The youngest was cute little redhead boy. We were in the car one day and he was acting up and me being 18 and trying to be a "Dad" which I had no place doing in the first place, reached back to just tap his cheek to get his attention. And I mean tap, not slap, just wanted to say hey chill and listen. Anyway he turned just right and I bloodied his nose. I will always remember that and have never spanked again, my kids dont even know what that means. We talk. It works. Especially if they are fighting. How you gonna spank one for hiotting? Your hitting them to tell them hitting is wrong. It doesnt math right man. Just talk.

That's unfair - childhood vaccination isn't advised till the child is 8 weeks old - the baby's too young. Bearing in mind that some get 'flu like' symptoms after a flu vaccination, it's a sensible question - she's asking if she's putting her child at risk. No, she isn't because the 'reaction' is not actually flu, and is not infectious. The stupid comment is 'if the other one survives.'

The CDC doesn't recommend the flu vaccine until 6 months of age, so the parent's stupidity is entirely dependent on whether they are actually anti-vax or if the newborn simply isn't old enough for the flu vax. https://www.cdc.gov/flu/vaccines/vaccinations.html

Essential oils are one type of remedy for people, that are applied transdermally. Other oils, like coconut oil, and fish oils, are eaten like food, and are beneficial to one's health. The home visits are nerve-wracking, but how they go will be entirely dependent on the person who shows up. When my ex and I were on that route, we killed ourselves for weeks over the first one, then got the friendliest woman in the world. We looked forward to the follow - ups. (then the agency got shut down by the state, but that's a whole different ball o wax...)

It's inane and similar to those who want to have a baby without realizing that babies will not be babies forever. Wanting a baby but not a toddler, child, teen, or young adult is ludicrous.

Not even just a serial killer documentary, but actually a very well-done fictionalized account, and one of the most disturbing shows I've ever seen. I actually was worried for the actor who played Dahmer. But any kind of show about a serial killer is not appropriate for a 10 yo.

I think that the mom here forgets that leatherface is a film character (partially inspired by Ed Gein, iirc) so he's NOT real. Dahmer was a real person and his doings are still affecting families to this day. I am sure that even Albert Fish's doing still affects families to this day, actually. So even he would be a no-go for me. But I don't really know... my kids are into creepy stuff as well, but that's mainly zombies and ghosts and monsters and vampires. If my kids want to dress up as a real killer, I'd just tell them no. They can dress normally and pretend to be dressed up as a serial killer (because you can't tell by looking at them that they are killers, right?) But to dress up as an actual, named serial killer would be a hard no from me.

I experienced something similar - I like a true crime documentary as much as the next person (I call it Murder Porn) but even I failed to make it through a Dahmer one I was watching on Netflix. Same with anyone who has seen a UK documentary called The Reckoning, about Jimmy Saville. In the end it was just too much. And as Ashley Harrold, poster below points out, a huge amount of Jimmy Saville's victims are alive (he wasn't a murderer, as far as I know, but one of the worse child abusers that I think that UK has ever uncovered).

In the UK, children should use a child car seat until they are 12 years old or 135 centimeters (4 ft 5 inches) tall, whichever comes first. After that, they should use a seat belt.

Alright, American here to explain. Yes, you should be using a car seat until about that same age/height threshold (cant remember the exacts) BUT, by the age of this kid, they should be either using a seat like that but with the regular seatbelt, or just a small booster chair with no back. I fully agree with still using a car seat for safety, but I think the bullying is more targeted at still using the full harness, which probably shouldn't be used still at 7

I'm going to assume this post is a joke. When my kids were that age they also wanted to "help" cleaning. My youngest child like to "wash the dishes", so I'd have to fill the sink with dishes and let her play in the water and soap for a few minutes. She loved it. My other daughter liked to sweep the floor, which basically meant swinging the broom around and knocking things off of tables. I took a few photos of them doing their thing, and if I had social media, this is the kind of joke I'd post. Mostly because my friends know that I do not hold such backwards views, and they would see that I'm just being silly.

I remember being maybe 7 and having to walk down the street to a neighbor’s house to have her open the toilet bowl cleaner because it was childproof. Yes, it was my job to clean the bathroom and my mom left me home alone (I think she ran to the bank or something). No, she wasn’t a horrible parent. Just a lapse in judgment. It was a different time (early 80s). I was also mature for my age. But it was also a “mental note” of things not to do when I had kids.

Books exist. Read a book with your child. Go for a walk, not on your phone, and point out things likes trees, birds, flowers. Just anything really that can stimulate conversation. I get quite upset when I see (usually the mum) out with a child in a pushchair or pram (stroller I believe, in the US!) - trying to balance a takeaway coffee, phone in the other hand, and completely ignoring the child.

No big deal. As a parent you have to improvise sometimes. Although, if the kid is likely to notice the money being gone, I'd write a cute note from the fairy instead, explaining that she forgot the coin at her little fairy house and that she'll be back tomorrow. The kid might even love it more than normally, because now they have a special fairy note AND still get the money.

One accident and they could all be dead. But whatever.

I'm torn on this one. Honestly had friends and family back when I was a kid that only had a truck and for the most part trucks only had a front seat back then. Took a lot of short trips and a few long ones in the bed of a pickup. I know it's not safe but something in my old brain just writes it off a normal.

Yeah. It's against the law where I live here in the UK these days. Only, I travelled like that now and then when I was young. It was great fun. Only, probably best to put a stop to it. If anything does go wrong, the consequences tend to be dreadful.

This always looks so much fun in movies, part of me wishes that this was a thing in my country too when I was young. The responsible part of me obviously says it's a bad idea, but the adventurous part of me soooooo wishes to experience this, it just seems like the ultimate fun for kids.

Dude, in the 80s, that's just how we got around. Our parents did not give a s**t about our safety. I remember riding in the back of my friend's dad's pickup. When he'd hit a bump, we'd go flying into the air. We even made a game of it.
