Inktober 2018 was special for me, I decided to make a consistent theme for this challenge which turned into a series for animal rights. I managed to complete all of the 31 days with the aim to make people more aware of animal suffering around us.

Some interpretations of the themes are symbolic and maybe a bit far-fetched, but I had to handle all of them somehow.

I drew with markers on A5 canvas.

Some images have an additional caption to convey the message more clearly.

this breaks my heart. i don't understand how anyone can abandon any animal..especially at such a young age where this basically always means they are going to die a slow and painful death while being scared and alone, not understanding what is happening, crying for their mother who will not answer.

I don't understand why people can't just take them to an animal shelter

instead of abandoning animals why not just give them to a friend that wants the animal or bring them to a shelter instead of being lazy and leaving them to suffer i never buy my pets i always adopt or keep strays i have 4 cats and 3 of the four are strays cindy, little girl and tord the one that isnt a stray is jimmy because he is little girls kitten and he grew up with a house ive had like 14 othr cats that were strays and why we dont have strays we adopt my dog vinny was a adopted dog and we found his original owner and found out his name was billy but his owner was so happy to see him again it breaks my herat people do this to animals it takes a hour at most to give them to a shelter or a friend

What breaks my heart is that these kittens don't realize how hopeless their situation is. They are playing happily in this box in the middle of the forest. It's very unlikely someone will find them

Abandoning kittens is just so lazy and cruel. These kittens NEED someone to help them. This doesn't mean you NEED to help them, find a shelter with a good foster care program!

I remember, as a child, you would hear about people drowning unwanted kittens. Put them in a bag and throw them in the river. It broke my heart then, and still does today. Get your pets spayed or neutered and this would not happen.

People without a heart, have a litter of kittens or pups they do not want, some dump these in horrible places where often not found, suffer and die, they could be left where they will be found !!!

people that do this to any pet in real life should suffer the same pain as punishment and then go to jail. If you are not capable to take care of your pet please find a shelter, better than mistreating them and left to die

sometimes my sister leaves her dog outside because she has to vaccum, sweep, dust,or doing homework (shes in collage) she feels guilty the entire time and if she sees lilly and shes hungry cold hot or thirsty she lets her back in people that leave animals outside for no reason are morons and i agree they should be punished my sister always tries to make sure her dog isnt hurt though and leaves out food and water next to her doghouse so she has a shelter food and water and the doghouse has a blanket in it and its big enough to fit me dogs are just like mute children and should be treated like a child so i agree with you their animals should go to a better place

There are 2 households in my neighborhood that leave their dogs tied up outside for hours. They never walk them. It breaks my heart that they see other dogs being walked. I reported it to management, and they didn't seem concerned. I'm getting ready to report it, if I see it on a really cold day. I will not try to talk to the neighbors. I know from experience that they will make your life hell, and won't stop doing it anyway.

Sad that it is safer for the wild elephants in many regions to be de-tusked to protect them from poachers.

De-tusking them sometimes really work. There are also projects who mark elephants with special paint to taint the ivory, so it becomes worthless to poachers.

    The Scout

This is exactly what some organisations do to save the elephants - only they usually destroy the ivory afterwards, because using it would still feed the market and create more demand. They also destroy any ivory gained from animals that died naturally. The reason is that as long as there is "legal" ivory, you can't go as hard on ivory trade, as you can't always prove the origin. If no "legal" ivory enters the market, anyone trading real ivory is punishable by definition.

I think this guy picked up a bottle on the beach instead of a shell to use as a home. It might be a statement about how natural things such as seashells are being replaced by our rubbish. A statement on how garbage is effecting sea life.

It's a hermit crab so it's not stuck in the bottle but using it as a home before switching it to something else. I think this is a commentary on how littered with trash the beaches are and the crab isn't able to find an actual sea shell to have as a home, but has to use garbage that's sometimes unsafe (like metal cans with sharp edges)

How can people do this? Just kill an innocent living creature? They are just like you. They had dreams, a family, friends. A life. And your selfish action took that all away from them. That tiger could have been a father or mother. It's cubs could be alone, with no one to protect them from other people like you. Stop this, killing animals is wrong and cruel.

Im probably going to get down voted for this but tigers dont have the mental capacity to think like humans. Their entire thought process is devoted to surviving. Also fun fact the male tigers will usually kill any cubs they see so they can mate with the mother, this is the same for many animals. just my opinion though.

I myself collect animal skins, but not for fun or beauty. I love nature, and when I see a dead animal, it makes me feel better to make it look as though it were still alive. I only collect animal skins that have been found already dead from natural cause, not hunted ones. I use the skins and bones to teach people about nature and how humans are ruining it. I would never kill any animal, but it makes me happy to know that the dead animal I just found is now being used to educate people and possibly even save thousands of other animals of that species. I have changed a lot of people’s perspectives about things. Everyone, everywhere: going to nature is going home. It breaks my heart to know that so many animals are extinct because of us. The last white rhino on earth just died in 2018. Many more animals are going extinct as we speak. Please, respect nature! I am gifted in talking to animals by mimicry, and can often understand them in return. I love living wild. Nature always wins.

This may true for a lot of people but not everyone. I have a friend who shows her dogs. They are first pets and show dogs second. They are healthy and happy. They enjoy being showed. They enjoy the attention and training for it and they are always rewarded with treats and attention. I know there are people who only care about the prizes and not their animals but that's not true for everyone.

We have drains like this in my neighborhood. I keep my dogs away from them. The chihuahua is only 5 pounds, and is small enough to fall in.

Ugh, I hate eating meat that comes from cruel, infected places like this. Thankfully, I buy my meat from a near by farm that treats their animals right and makes sure they are happy. Seriously, how hard is it to let an animal be free and happy before they have to die?

I wish the government would do something about this. I understand the concept of mass production of food. The demand is there. People don't need to go vegan, but they could reduce their consumption of meat and animal byproducts.

It is very sad that the animals have to suffer before being killed. First, they are raised as chicks in barns too full of them to even stretch their wings, then they are crammed into small crates for transport. Half of the chickens die on the way to the slaughterhouse because of suffocation from the chickens on top of them or are crushed to death from the weight. WHY, PEOPLE, WHY??!!!?

I know I will get downvoted to hell, but the tail placement is too low. Tail nicking is not a thing in the Western style. There would normally be a cinch in front, not just the back strap (I don't ride western, but have been told it keeps the saddle from flipping up...why, god alone knows). Plus the saddle is too far back. As a side note, this horse looks fit, not thin, and the domesticated horse is very capable of carrying weight. You want to see suffering? check out The Brooke, they support working equids in the poorest nations whose families depend on them. Look up brick kiln donkeys in India. The f****d up life will shock you.

The drawing has alot of mistakes. Missing a girth, tail placement too low and the halter is misshapen. But it is true that horses are broken in, abused and used for humanitys benefit. Ive seen the emotional damage wrong handling can do to a horse. I met one who one day just exploded, he had been a champion, no reduced to an emotional wreck. No human could go near without all of his defenses going up, rigid in his whole body, afraid to move or otherwise be punished.

Pigs are food. Farmers don't separate pigs from piglets to early. It would make no sense to put your profit in danger by letting the piglets starve. I grew up on a cattle farm. We never had pregnant cows. We bought the babies at auctions, castrated them and bottle fed them until we could turn them out to pasture

Yes. Pets are not christmas gifts! They are not a toy. If your child wants a pet, talk about it with the whole household and make sure they understand the responsibility, which comes with having a pet! There are too many "christmas gifts" who get dropped on the rode, because someone or other got bored with it or underestimated the workload.

If a child wants a pet, their parents' should have a very long conversation about the responsibility, cost, and dedication it takes to have a dog, cat, fish (anything, really). Then the child should go to a shelter with their parents to choose a pet that works for everyone. If this situation happens to be around the holidays/a birthday in the family, I understand why a new addition to the family could be considered their gift.

A lot of children swear they will take care of the pet, then they don't. It falls on the parent. Those kids need some discipline. No computer time or take away the phone, until the pet is fed, walked, the litter box cleaned, etc.

having a "pet" ( I hate that word) is like having a kid, another part of the family you love unconditionally, that you take care of and look after, NOT a THING,NOT a gift, NOT an Ipad or PS4 or disposable object. Think long and hard about it then if you can commit go rescue.

They make certain kinds of sushi with raw fish. But the fish is usually freshly caught, killed, cleaned, and sliced into tiny, thin pieces. Then they place that over prepared little circles made of rice and other stuff before it is brought to your table. Those I have tried. But, I refuse to eat something that is still alive, absolutely NOT!!! I DO NOT want to see a fish or any other thing to still be moving on my plate or in a bowl of soup (yes, they make soup with live marine animals in it, including one that has live octopi in it--people have been choked to death because they attach their suckers to the inside of your throat and suffocate you. Talk about payback.) No live food!!!

No not at all. As some one who has worked with cattle and livestock this is in no way naturally correct. I do know some companies use drugs or medicine to get a lean muscle, but I have never seen anything to this extent in person. There may be some sick people who do this to their livestock but it is not common.

This breaks my heart. Here in the USA, in New York City, they use horses to give people carriage rides in certain places. These poor horses are forced to pull heavy carriages. They have to inhale the fumes from all the taxis and cars. and if they fall down they are beaten to try and get them back up. And they are used this way until the day they fall down and can't get back up anymore. I hate to think about what happens to them after that. I and many others have signed petitions to get this cruel form of entertainment shut down. And there have been protesters on the ground there in NY as well. THIS MUST STOP!!!!!

you are absolutely correct about the carriage horses but in the book "talking to animals", you gain a new insight about all of it and if you read the book, you'll know not all of them treat their horses badly, for some, this is a second chance. most of them only drive in the park now and not on the streets, and it's important to know some of the people who own and use horses in new york for carriages are bad. please read the book, its really good and it makes you realize a lot of things.

This reminds me of one movie I watched as a kid. It was about this forest worker who gets shrunken and finds out that there is a little society protecting the forest. What was it called?

As someone who clothes their dog (when needed) I can confidently say that there is no excuse to clothe a reptile and no excuse to clothe any other animal in that kind of clothing. If you are dressing you animal it needs to be because of something, (no, because it’s cute doesn’t count as a reason) or else it’s just needlessly stressful to the poor critter

I think the iguanas can be quite happy. Not many people go as far as actually dressing them up.

I just borrowed a little sweater and a little t-shirt from my Mom because I had to groom my dog last week. I know you shouldn't necessarily do that in the winter, but she's a Lhasa Apso so I kind of had to. She's a rescue dog, she's been with me for about 5 years now. I had never put clothing on an animal before, but she loves them. She will practically jump right into them. But, if I go somewhere and leave her wearing one...lol...when I get back she's so happy to see me that she will start to dance, wag her tail and then wiggle right out of it. It's adorable. But, winter is probably the only time I would put clothes on her.

Depends on the situation. If the iguana (I think) is okay with it and doesn't show signs of discomfort later on, go ahead! If not, STOP RIGHT THERE! Also, you need to be well-informed about the animal you're dressing so you are able to recognize signs of discomfort.

Yes - this is the exact opposite of sustainable. This way of fishing is supposed to be illegal in most places because of how bad it is for the ecosystem, but that hasn't stopped a lot of people from doing it anyway.

Aquaculture, when done properly, can alleviate the strain on the wild catch. Sadly sustainability doesn't seem to be important to those in power.

Metal snares are terrible! They cut through the skin to the bone and often suffer for over 26 hours before the Hunter comes to kill it. Soft snares don’t hurt at all. Way more humane.

Beavers can clear out a stand of trees fairly rapidly. This beaver is looking at this tree like it's the only one in the woods. Btw, American forests are regenerating faster than ever to due thoughtful logging laws.

But not thoughtful enough, yet. Also, this one tree stump is symbolic of an entire forest being wiped out. At first, clearing out a few trees for timber or land may not seem like a bad idea, and in small amounts, it may not have a huge effect. However, take a look at any history book. There's always something about major deforestation problems somewhere in there. Or statistics on rainforest loss. Or Haiti (it used to be lush forests but look at it now). We are currently wiping out forests faster than they can grow back, and much faster than any beaver colony. By cutting down forests without giving them time to grow back, we are effectively destroying the planet we call home. In short, this symbolic picture sends a clear message: STOP CUTTING DOWN TREES SO FAST!

I don't really get this one. I live in a place where there are A LOT of deer and yes it's very sad when they get hit, but it can't always be helped and it's often just as dangerous for the person who hit them as for the deer. They often run right out in front or towards the car and there isn't any way to avoid it. And it's said that it's like hitting a brick wall and people are often injured or killed. So it's sad but I wouldn't equate it with animal cruelty considering people don't typically hit them on purpose.

You'd be surprised how many animals are hit on purpose. My aunt ran over a turtle on purpose. And my grandfather tried to run over our neighbor's dog just because he hated our neighbors.

I too live where there are a lot of deer and have vacationed where there are many moose (like Alaska and Canada) and it's almost impossible not to hit one once you realize your paths are going to collide. My niece even had one run into HER and totaled her car (broke the deer's neck). It's a hazard all drivers watch out for around here because not only does the deer usually lose their life, your car receives major damage, and you can be killed. I agree it's not right that we are encroaching upon their territory and I, personally, love seeing them in the wild, but I would only consider this intentional cruelty if the deer was not dead and was not put down, but allowed to lie there and suffer. I also have to agree with Ol Loi that there are plenty of people out there who run over animals on purpose, like squirrels, cats, dogs, turtles, and anything else they can make a target of and play chicken with!

I hit a squirrel one time, not on purpose, of course. That was close to 40 years ago, and I still feel guilty. I just can't imagine people doing it on purpose.

Apparently squirrels eating the wires is a cause of the majority of power outages in the USA, I know this isn't portraying that but it's a real issue and the animals themselves cause it. Learned all this one day last summer when a neighborhood squirrel chewed the lines to my house and the electric repairmen tossed the still smoking remains down into my trash.
