That reminds me of a cartoon I saw decades ago. Two men, wearing hard hats, were looking up at a skyscraper. The skyscraper has a large semi-circle blob and smaller splotches on the side, and one of the workers said "Damn it Bob, I TOLD you not to set your coffee cup on the blueprints."

My mother was quite handy around the house, able to do many repairs, maintenance, etc. One day I came home from school to hear her calling my name. She sounded different, and as I went room to room looking for her, I came upon her leg protruding through the ceiling. She had gone into the attic to eradicate a wasp nest and lost her balance, resulting in the talking leg I was seeing. We managed to get her safely out of the situation, and she got rid of the nest without being stung. She patched the ceiling perfectly the next day. She was awesome.

We have to admit that not everyone enjoys cleaning. At least not after smashing an oven door or covering the bathroom floor with bubbles. Cleaning expert Alessandro Gazzo believes that the reason many dislike tidying up is because it’s a repetitive and mechanical task.

“If you think about it, it’s like brushing your teeth: it’s not fun, but it’s important. You have to do it whether you like it or not, but you (and the people around you!) will notice the positive outcome. However, brushing your teeth is much easier and faster, of course. That’s why you need to focus on creating a routine that stops you from overthinking and allows you to jump straight to action.”

Meanwhile, professional cleaner Axel Avery says, “I think many people dislike cleaning because a) it’s tiring, especially if you do it for years and years; b) it’s often an imbalanced responsibility that usually falls heavily only on a single member of the household (which leads to arguing, frustration, etc.); and c) it takes time and energy away that you can spend doing something more productive or fun (which is why many people hire a house cleaning service).”

We had this happen on a much larger scale when the landscapers incorrectly tried to put a terrace in our garden. The first time we had a rain storm the whole hill washed down in to the pool. Believe it or not you don't have to empty and refill the whole thing. You add chemicals to clean it and vacuum up the dirt. Yes they paid for the cleaning and came back to do the terrace correctly. No issues when it rains now.

We had the same thing happen with a great big potted palm. No terrace though, our pool is indoors, but my dog did one of his stealth moves (he's insanely quiet for being so big) and scared the c**p out of the pool guy, who jumped & knocked into the planter. Couldn't be too upset though, totally understandable if you turned around to suddenly find a giant horse dog behind you. It cleaned up nicely & the company took care of everything.

Indeed, cleaning can be a true pain sometimes, but it often proves to be very beneficial to our mental health—an aspect Gazzo finds the most enjoyable about it. “We all know a clean space helps you stay healthy in the physical sense (by sanitizing surfaces, killing mold, etc.) But what I like the most is that you also improve your mental health.

If you clean your home regularly, you feel more at ease, you forget about the stress of not finding your items, and you are more focused (this is key if you work from home). If you stop thinking of cleaning as a burden, it becomes one less burden in your life.”

In the UK you have to use a deposit scheme. They hold the deposit through the entirety of the tenancy. If you believe the tenant has damaged the property and you want to contest giving the deposit back you can but you need evidence and 9/10 they will side with the tenant anyway 🤷 my tenants will always their deposit back as long as they look after the house and leave it in the same state they found it. With this picture though, accidents do happen and can't be helped, I would be understanding to that.

This should cost way less to fix than a months rent! You can often do it yourself - in my experience these glas plates are removable for cleaning purposes. Order a new one and offer to install it yourself?

Deposit is only one month's rent where you are? Here they can legally ask up to three months rent as a deposit (most do). It was reduced to two months max once but they changed the law again.

This is a completely normal insulated-core steel entry door. What I think happened is they removed the inner vinyl grille (because it is not in the photo anywhere) to clean the glass more effectively, not understanding that the inner and outer grilles sandwich the glass between the inside and outside skins of the door. A little too much pressure on the inside and the glass unit fell out.

A Roomba would be full within 30 mins in my house, due to thick carpeting (UK, West Mids) in lounge and hall, as they attract dust like a magnet (old house), so leaving it on while out wouldn't work out very well for me, lol.

Avery likes to clean professionally because it makes other people’s lives easier. “You know, it’s not easy to run a home and have a social life, work, and spend time with your family. In a more personal sense, what I enjoy about cleaning is that it helps me keep my life in order and structured. I think your home is (most times) a representation of what is going on in your life. If your house is a mess, it’s highly unlikely that your life is under control.”

To befriend cleaning and avoid failures in the future, experts point out a few mistakes people should refrain from making. The first one Avery indicates is using the wrong cleaning products. “You don’t need a strong, borderline-toxic cleaning chemical. In fact, most things in your home just need an all-purpose cleaner. The simpler and more versatile your cleaning products are, the more efficient you will be at cleaning.”

That's not actually a normal attic, it's in a garage and not even a surface they're supposed to put things on, much less walk over it. There is, most likely, storage space up there with better support for placing things and walking on. This person took a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

Why is so many houses in the US (I guess it’s in America?) build in cardboard or very thin metrical?! This happened so many times. Build houses that people actually can Live in? Without hurting themselves? Thicker than walls, doors and attic roofs? We don’t have simulat problems here😳 Edit typo

Another one he points out is cleaning in the wrong order. “This makes people over-clean wet floors, for example, or have to clean twice because they’ve forgotten to clean from top to bottom. Always clean from top to bottom and from the furthest point away from the door to the room you’re in, and move towards the door."

The washer in my old house drained into a hole in the basement floor that had a sump pump installed. Water goes in, pump sucks it out & pushes it into the sewer line. It was quite efficient, until the sump pump died and I found out by the inch of water covering the basement floor. It was bare concrete, and I figured I was lucky. If anything was going to overflow and flood the basement, I would choose hot, soapy water every time.

Meanwhile, Gazzo believes that cleaning without a plan is the most common mistake. ”You start going around everywhere and don’t really finish cleaning anything. Besides, it’s frustrating not knowing what to do next and you need to make decisions on the spot. Create a plan first and you will jump from A to B to C. It’s easier and more organized, and you will have a more precise time estimate for cleaning.”

Happens often enough if you have a diamond ring (either all round diamonds, or the stone has turned to the palm side of your hand), and then you dry the glasses to make them shine: Congrats, you've scored a neat ring around the glass! If it doesn't immediately break, then it will during the next wash from the heat/expansion.

It's not actually. Think I've even seen it here before. Many sinks are mounted from the bottom. If the adhesives / clamps are not installed properly the result can be this. Older style sinks (like mine) have a lip and set down in from above. Still fixed in place but even if not sealed the sink holds itself in place. Newer style looks cool but has to be installed correctly.

He also notes that elbow grease doesn’t always fix everything. “You don’t need to tire yourself out cleaning for hours and spending unnecessary energy. Let cleaning agents act on the surface for 10–15 minutes, and then wipe. You avoid getting tired, and you also protect surfaces from scratching, for example.”

Had an apartment neighbor pour out cooking oil on my ash pile I was waiting to cool so I could clean it up. My dog got into it and came back to me like this. Unfortunately, he also got severe food poisoning and painted the inside of my apartment. At the time I blamed the neighbors but they didn't do it on purpose and I was the A who didn't watch what my dog was eating..... My dog survived but it was a lesson for us both.

Also, GF was feeding my dog a popsicle and he grabbed the whole thing with his tongue, swallowing it whole, stick and all. We were freaking out but all we could do was watch his behavior... a week went by and nothing so we figure he puked it up. the following week I noticed a stick poking out of his butt. I slowly pulled it out and it was a completely intact popcicle stick that had made its way through him. Same dog as before....

My Dad Cleaned My Cat's Litter Box With My Spatula While I Was Out Of Town

My Dad Cleaned My Cat's Litter Box With My Spatula While I Was Out Of Town

My dad is living with me at the moment. I was out of town for several days and came home to a spatula next to my cat’s litter box. The actual litter scoop was in the small closet in plain sight. He didn’t call or ask about the location.

Reminds me of the Bored Panda person who bought a spatula/ spoon utensil from a second hand store and used it for cooking. They later found out it was a pooper scooper! At least your Dad didn't wash it and put it back in the kitchen.

For some cleaning do's, Avery recommends having a plan before going into it. “Always try multitasking: while you’re leaving your toilet cleaner act on your toilet for 15 minutes, wipe your sink and your mirror in the meantime,” he adds. “Try alternating your tasks so you don’t get bored. Look for house cleaning services online that have blogs with cleaning tips, so you can learn from the best. They have refined their cleaning techniques many times and will help you work easier.”

My son bought a house with new carpets throughout. When I bought a Shark (lighter to carry upstairs) I gave him my Dyson. He found out how thin that carpeting was when he hoovered, as it sucked it off the floor and jammed the Dyson. So, make sure your carpets/rugs can take it, before you invest in one, lol (ps: the older models are built to last and are worth looking at. Mine was a DC07- 2001 model, btw). Great for bare floors, though.

Gazzo’s professional tip is to create a cleaning calendar and put aside 15 minutes to tidy up a different room each day. “By the end of the week, your entire home will be decently clean and tidy. If you have more family members, include them on your checklist. If you have kids, make sure their tasks are age-appropriate and easy to carry out. This will give them a sense of responsibility and accomplishment once they finish.”

Title probably wrong, text probably accurate. Dishwashing (as in hand) yes. Dishwasher (as in the machine) no. Dishwasher detergent is generally formulated for very low suds. It's why you see "DOH!" pictures when someone uses hand type soap in their dishwasher.

The title says "dishwasher" detergent. That kind doesn't suds. If it did, your dishwasher would overflow. It's dish detergent, not dishwasher detergent.

PSA: A GREAT way to clean a TV is with a micro fiber cloth and spray bottle of clean water (distilled probably best but I use my soft well water). Mist a small amount of water on the CLOTH (NOT TV), wipe screen with cloth. If you have not done this you will be amazed at how well it cleans. COSTCO rep taught me that when I asked how they clean their display TVs. He said they sometimes add a very small amount of hydrogen peroxide but I've had such great results with just water I haven't bothered. Obviously - same idea for other screens - phones, tablets. And if it is just a light smudge or two - I often skip the water and just use the microfiber cloth. If you use a dedicated cloth it lasts for ages, meaning I don't have to beat it up in the washer. I bought a bundle of them at costco and I'm still on the first two - one for the TV and one next to my bed for my tablet / reading glasses.

I never liked cutting boards made from multiple sections of wood for that very reason. Often they look nice because the pieces are stained in alternating light and dark colors, but they're only held together with wood glue. Give me a solid piece of wood any day.

Isn't solid wood chopping boards very rare? Unless they're really thick they'd bend. At least I learned something to that effect in school.

A drunk party guest put the cutting board in the dishwasher. If you mean why it broke apart like that, cutting boards like this one a glued together from different strips of wood. The dishwasher removed the glue holding them together.

I had a drunk guest at an off-site BBQ put a huge jug of sauce in the back of my car as we were packing up. Lid was only resting on top. Cost me a lot of $$$ to get the sauce out of my fabric.

This^^^ is why I stopped wearing contact lenses over two decades ago. When I reached the point where I had to have my glasses on, so that I didn't put the contact lens inside out on my fingertip, I figured it was time to give up on them.

One reason "fluffy" micro fibre cloths are not recommended for cleaning glasses: the cloth can hold smaller dirt grains and scratch up smooth surfaces.

Luckily, you can usually find a replacement on eBay (used but good condition) for a decent price. The kids, though. If they get pocket money, maybe they shouldn't until the replacement is 'paid for' by it. A lesson they would likely not forget so easily as just being grounded. ;)

It's ridiculous that on MANY appliances, the ink for measurements/numbers come off with just about any kind of cleaner. I actually test it before I buy. I use hand sanitizer, and if it comes off, it's s**t quality in general. If the company cared about long term use, they would NOT make it so easy to lose the #s. It's a huge red flag.

As someone who once did this to a partner's pan, I have strong opinions on this. My ignorance was replaced with knowledge: I learned the best seasoning technique possible and the whys and whatnots. Only then did I fully appreciate 1) why people love their cast iron pans 2) how valuable a well-seasoned pan is to a cook 3) how misunderstood the topic is. While the damage is truly reversable, it takes time, lots and lots of time and proper use, to build up a nice carbon coating.

Cast iron pans are the best precisely because they are indestructible. Just redo the seasoning.

Never put something that can make the bed dirty or wet near the bed. I live in the equator luckily, if i spill water to my bed i just need to put it under the sun until it dries. But if i spill something sweet, it's gonna be another story.

as a teenager, I had my bed next to my window, right up against the wall. my roller blind decided it was going to fall down on top of me one night. thankfully it only hit me kind of on the side. However, it's not the first time a roller blind has had it out for me, because I was at a library (or somewhere like that) when a floor to ceiling length big massive rollerblind decided to fall onto my head and gave me a concussion. :')

Looks like monitor glass??? Wow, if so. As said, buy him a replacement. It's best not to touch someone else's monitor screen, tbh, as they are so easy to damage if cleaned wrongly. If he loves the OP, I'm sure he'll (hopefully) not say stuff that could end the relationship. 🤞 EDIT just seen a post lower down with a glass insert in the PC case, so ignore what I previously put. *scampers off*

My PC has a glass side panel. Came that way so I tolerate it. But I don't consider it a 'feature'. I also don't care about seeing the lights on my Nvidea graphics card. The metal case on my old Win98 PC is 20+ years old, taken a lot of beatings and will still be fine when I finally toss it in a recycle pile.

What on earth did the person soak them in? We have blinds (plastic) all along our floor to nearly ceiling windows and the slider doors going outside too. I used to take them down to clean, soak, then put back up the next day and I've never had them even slightly warp, lol. Now we just clean each one individually while hanging, because it's much easier. Plus those that were once too little to help now can, and quite enjoy it for some odd reason.

I thought they weren't washable... try dampening them with a spray bottle and water, then press them dry with an iron on low - if they are fully fabric (not plastic-backed). If they still curl, soak them in a fabric stiffener and let dry flat (don't use an iron here though, not good for the iron if its still wet or damp - iron if needed once dry).

If the opening is too small to get down to the bottom with your hand you can wrap a cloth or paper towel around a knife to get into the tough spots. A wrapped butter knife is good at getting into crevices that need cleaning. Key word is wrapped.

I have a stick vacuum that breaks down into several smaller components... which is super useful in camper that gets sand in it when walking the dogs at a campground, yet needs to be small to maximize storage... however is NOT so useful when the "empty" button is right below where you detach the stick. At least once every couple days, I get done vacuuming and end up dumping the entire contents onto my feet as I try to detach the stick for storage 😒

After this happened with two handheld and two long handled versions, I'll never again trust a mini-vacuum. All the brands seem to have this same flaw.

Mom Sprayed Cleaner On The Light Switch And Now I Have No Electricity. Moving Out Inspection Is Tomorrow

Mom Sprayed Cleaner On The Light Switch And Now I Have No Electricity. Moving Out Inspection Is Tomorrow

Did some deep cleaning yesterday since inspection is on Monday. I was writing down a list of things we need for today and I watched as my mom sprayed cleaner on the switch. Not even five minutes later we hear a pop and all of the lights go out. We hoped it would be okay today, but when I flipped the breaker there was a flash pop and lights out again. I’ve resigned myself to losing a third of my deposit to this.

Sounds sketchy... I have personally sprayed liquid cleaners on light switches and I have as of yet had one blow out, catch fire, arc electricity, no wait I have seen an arc. Regardless there must have been a pre-existing wiring issue. Lucky you were moving, good thing no one got shocked ⚡

No, it doesn't necessarily mean there was a pre-existing issue, it really depends on how much liquid penetrated it and what exactly was in it. That switch and socket looks very odd and one could easily see how it would be possible to get a lot of water inside it.

Why Did Cleaning My Bathroom Remove All The Finish From My Door?

Why Did Cleaning My Bathroom Remove All The Finish From My Door?

I cleaned all my bathroom surfaces with just Lysol disinfectant, and put toilet bowl cleaner in the toilet. It was really strong so I ended up turning on the fan and closing the door (to keep the cats out) and left it for a few hours. I did not put anything on the door but when I came back in it looked like this.

That door was definitely wiped, that isn't just damage from the gas created by the lysol and toilet bowl cleaner. It was a badly painted door in the first place, but the second door is painted with the same paint and it's fine. My brother did this exact same thing in his crappy apartment the first time he decided to go balls to the wall with cleaner on every single surface. He didn't wipe most of the door, he stopped as soon as he noticed what the cleaner was doing, but the wipe marks are pretty identical to this one, and covered about 1/4 of the door after he made a few big swipes with the cloth.

Fumes from the Lysol and the toilet cleaner combined and created chlorine gas. Good you kept the door closed and pets out. Else you would’ve had a dead cat.

Why do some people insist on using dangerous, strong chemicals for regular cleaning?? 🤨 If it's not bleach, then it's hydrogen peroxide or other type of paint strïpper 🤦‍♀️ Yeah, OP, your "Lysol" is the same chemical you would use to clean brushes after painting a wall. You wiped the finish of the door yourself.

Never spray directly on the screen. Spray on cloth and then wipe. I only use water and something that is microfiber works well. My husband was sipping on whiskey one time and something made him laugh. He wound up spitting it all over the screen and there were discolored spots all over the monitor, so maybe whatever was used had alcohol in it.

Yes, yes you are. Leaving the racks in will burn off the chrome coating, which allows it to slide smoothly in/out of the oven. Also, leaving anything in the oven can cause warping, whether they're racks or pans

In the past, when I've run out of dishwasher detergent, I've hand-washed the dishes and put them in the dishwasher (rinsed) for final/sanitizing cycle without adding detergent. Or, just go to the store and grab a box of dishwasher detergent.

Made me laugh. For anyone who is not familiar - the Dark Brotherhood is an assassin's guild in the Elder Scrolls games and their symbol is a black hand print. It has nothing to do with race or whatever.

Handles like that should be solid as standard. So many of them are also aluminium, and fold like wet paper. I've had a mop with a wooden handle that lasted longer than these types. Back in the day, my dad used to use yacht varnish on my mum's wooden mop handles and garden brooms. Lasted quite a while.

The upper sprayer arm is driven by water pressure, not a motor, so it wouldn't have had enough oomph to do this damage. My first instinct is to suspect radiant heat from the drying cycle, but it's a pot lid and should be able to handle that without a problem.

I don't tempt fate with boiling water on cold glass but I also don't coddle it. I just run them under some water, then switch to hot water at a level comfortable for hand washing. Have never had a problem because it is tempered glass.

Toss in a little hair conditioner. It wall act as a defoamer. Youll need to repeat the wash again but dont use liquid dishwasher next time.

Use crushed up Tums. They diminish suds. Since I am just some rando on the internet, you can experiment with that in the kitchen before trying it on a larger scale. Shake up some soap and water in a glass and when you've got suds, crush up some Tums and put them in there.

Do people read the bottles at all? Bleach isn't supposed to go onto walls and would do just that

I'll never get why anyone cleans their house with bleach in the first place. It's not like a regular household needs to be sterile; Mild soap detergents that don't ruin varnished surfaces and any non-white cloth that's in its way absolutely do the trick

You need to scrub the whole wall, not just part of it.

Also, bleach can turn light surfaces yellowish if regularly done. Esp white gloss paint surfaces.

I always tell my mum not to touch my cast iron pans - but that's because they're heavy AF and I know she's got weak hands and would get all dramatic. Cast iron can be rescued from almost anything with very little work required.

Is it only broken on the top? Because if so, that's definitely still usable. You may need to file down the sharp edges, but I have a decanter that has a break on the lid and have used it like that for years. It's not like you're gonna be grabbing it at the very top.

Use warm water with a cup of white vinegar. Works better than windex and a lot cheaper
