An international team of climate experts known as the World Weather Attribution initiative analyzed the late June heatwave in the U.S. Pacific Northwest and came to a preliminary conclusion that it was a roughly 1-in-1,000-year event.

The extreme weather has bent roads, melted power cables, and triggered heat warnings for 50 million people in North America.

But other continents are suffering too. In Europe, for example, a massive forest fire is ravaging Greece for the 7th day.

However, pictures often speak louder than words. So Bored Panda compiled a collection of vivid images that perfectly sum up how the high temperatures have affected people and their surroundings this summer.

Think of the weight you'd lose if you had to disturb a kitty to get to the fridge. I just can't move sleeping cats.

Agreed. My 11 year old labrador never spent a single night outside. She has her own reclining chair and we keep our 24 foot pool just for her, even if she's old, she loves to take quick dips in the pool. She is a part of the family and as such, she should have what she likes.

Extreme heat might not sound as dramatic as hurricanes or floods, but the National Weather Service has deemed it the deadliest weather phenomenon in the US over the past 30 years, on average. And by far.

Of course, a heatwave in one state might not be a heatwave in another; the definition is usually relative to local weather conditions, with sustained temperatures in the 90th to 95th percentile of the average in a given area. So the threshold for a heatwave in Tucson is higher than the threshold in Seattle.

As Umair Irfan pointed out for Vox, heatwaves begin with a high-pressure system (also known as an anticyclone), where atmospheric pressure above an area builds up. That creates a sinking column of air that compresses, heats up, and oftentimes also dries out.

The sinking air acts as a cap or a heat dome and traps the latent heat already absorbed by the landscape. The high-pressure system also pushes out cooler, fast-moving air currents and squeezes clouds away, which gives the sun an unobstructed line of sight to the ground.

The ground — soil, sand, concrete, and asphalt — is then free to bake, and in the long days and short nights of summer, heat energy quickly accumulates and temperatures climb.

During extended dry spells, it's nice to put a shallow pan of water out in your yard for the birds and any other animals that come along. I save plastic take-out contains for this, especially the ones from catered meals at work. The big salad containers from Panera make excellent bird baths/drinking pools.

Leave pans of water on your porch, people. And a shallow one for birds. It is essential in the summertime heat for all the little wild creatures that live in our neighbourhoods. Especially now, when temperatures are off the charts.

Heatwaves typically last around five days, but can stick around for longer if the high-pressure system is blocked in place. “In some cases, you actually can get these kinds of patterns getting stuck, and that can lead to heat waves lasting much longer,” Karen McKinnon, an assistant professor of environment and sustainability at the University of California Los Angeles, told Vox.

Eventually, the high-pressure system will weaken, allowing in cooler air and precipitation that can bring the heatwave to an end. However, as the warm season continues, more high-pressure systems can settle in and restart the process.

"Meese"? Plural is still moose, from the Algonquian language , after "goose" was created from Indo-European origin/"geese"-German umlaut:). Just sayin', unless you're joking.

The whole scene is a bit exaggerated. The blobs of tar left on the surface of the road after some repair have melted. The surrounding pavement is just fine. This person decided to step squarely in it for the photo-op.

I'm just gonna go ahead and explain this because I imagine a lot of people, especially younger ones, won't know what this is. As cassettes were on their way out and CDs and walkmans were on their way in, a lot of cars could play a cassette but not a CD. You'd pop this into the cassette deck on your car, plug in the other end to the headphone jack of whatever device, and the music would play on your car's audio system.

When they can't find enough food in the surrounding area, they try their luck in gardens. With less vegetation in rural areas it's hharder for hedgehogs (and other creatures) to find enough food.

This image could not be taken this summer because we currently have the coolest summer in recent years: it rains non-stop and the temperature does not exceed 30 ° C (86 ° F) depending on the region. France is caught in what meteorologists call a "cold drop" while everywhere else it is sweltering heat.

Those are most likely coolers. They're made of a specific type of synthetic fabric that gives you a cooling feeling and protects you from UV radiation. Seen these a lot in here in S. Korea, but they wear it on their arms too. Especially people who work outdoors.

I visited Colorado recently, and this seems about right; didn't see many elk when I visited, but I hear Estes Park tends to have a lot of elk. It does indeed get hot in Colorado - some of the higher-altitude places (like Victor) were rather cold, but we got close to Denver and it was around 80 degrees.

The refrigeration system in a vending machine can only handle so much load. What likely happened is the compressor either tripped on thermal overload, or a high-pressure control turned the system off to prevent damage. That left the vending machine as a bit of a greenhouse and the cans heated up until they burst.

I've been living in the USA for over 20 years and I'm still confused by Americans' obsession with ice in all seasons. My boyfriend asks me if I want "American Ice" or "British Ice" in my drinks. "American" = a drink with your ice, "British" = a couple blocks of ice in your drink - or none at all.

Most of the pics are old and don't have anything to do with current events. Also, some are located in Australia (where it's winter at the moment), some in Turkey, some in the US, so it's not about one specific heat wave. Kinda strangely worded title for this list, but heck, it's BP :'D

The double coat on dogs can protect them against the heat and the cold, which is why you shouldn't shave them in the summer.

I know I am repeating myself after saying the same thing on another picture but I'm only doing it in case the list gets shortened and people see this and think it's a good idea. Ice can and DOES kill dogs. It raises their core temperature which leads to heat stroke.

I work at a veterinary hospital that treats dogs with heat stroke every summer. You are mistaken. Ice makes them cooler and is a source of hydration.

So... when did this happen? (A) Canadian borders have been closed to American tourists due to Covid. (B) Canada doesn't have snow in the summer (unless you go WAY north, but there aren't many cities or people there). -- I guess it is possible that this happened some time pre-Covid during a heat wave in early spring.

He should try to replace his grass with ground cover plants. They stay low and no mowing required. It’s better for the soil too, and - depending on the plants - it can also attract bees. If he adds some trees too, he will have some natural shade as well.

Not saying this is the case, but at least in my experience with my daughter pants help keep her from picking at her legs. She usually asks for pants if she can't control herself or starts to bleed (OCD with a very high pain tolerance).

47 celcius is 118 fahrenheit. Thing is the temperature inside the vehicle is going to be hotter than outside it, so it is likely to get above 60 in direct sun. They can cook at that temperature, might be a bit gooey though, it has been done before.

My grandfather had a cottage on Lake Superior. When we were kids, the best we could do was wade because it was so cold. So, I'm guessing it's really heated up. Yikes!

I'd assume that depends on how much poo is in there, and if there are liquid chemicals - if not, and if it's only used occasionally, I'd expect the poo to just dry up and almost not stink at all.

Don't feel bad! We were at an air show where the Thunderbirds were going to perform. One of the pilots was the cousin of a neighbor, so we had an all--around pass. We were standing by the gorgeous F-16s, when we noticed the landing gear was melting into the tar! They did not perform that day because they had to run tests to be sure there was OK!

I ordered Lindt Lindor milk chocolate truffles which arrived melted. I put them in the fridge for 8 hours and ate them. Nothing can destroy chocolate truffles, at least for me. 😊

When I went there a few years ago it was the second hottest day of the year. The recorded temperature was 142°F in the shade.

Death Valley is no joke. When I was on a trip out there with my dad in an RV, the RV hire company gave us strict instructions not to drive it anywhere near the place.

Done this. Hiding in the shade near the Forbidden City in summer I mean (I know that this photo is Tian'anmen, they get as hot as each other). Though it was 45 degrees in the shade when I was there, dread to think what it was in the sun.

I think it may actually have gone bad and exploded due to the gases produced by whatever was growing in it based on the bubbles in the bottom...

Servers know all too well not to marry ketchup bottles for this reason. Add a little heat to an older ketchup and boom!

Yeah, 35C is nowhere near hot enough to do this to ketchup in a cupboard, otherwise your salad cream and mayo would have gone too

As a kid, our house kept most condiments in the cupboard, but now, almost all go in the fridge. To each his own, of course.

Well, obviously they wouldn’t want to stay out on the patio longer than necessary, so they brought it in.
