No matter how you spin things, life is fundamentally unfair. Many people recognize that not everything that's legal is moral. But changing society and its laws for the better is an uphill struggle. Though you can strive to empower everyone and create more equality, it’s a long and arduous process.

Redditor u/custom_dream sparked an important discussion when they asked people to share their thoughts about the horrible things that happen that are “100% legal.” Their answers were eye-opening. Scroll down to see what these internet users believe must be changed in society ASAP.

Bored Panda got in touch with the author of the thread, Reddit user u/custom_dream, to learn more about the inspiration behind their thread and to get their thoughts on the problems plaguing society. Check out our interview with them below.

My husband is a diabetic. If we had lived in the USA, he too would have died long ago from the cost of insulin.

All the European countries I know have universal health, so those Euros should be actually dollars. We have a lot of faults, but I've never heard of anybody dying here because they can't afford their treatment, be it insulin, chemo, whatever. We may not claim we have "the best health system in the world" but here everybody can get the treatment, operation or whatever they need, even if they are homeless.

This will always hurt. I owe $7000 in hospital fees because I took my 2 year old to the emergency room because he had a high fever. All they did was take vitals, and give him ibuprofen. The doctor diagnosis was acute fever. Like that's why I brought him in, for a fever, I don't need you to tell me he has a fever, I need to know why. So I left the hospital and one week later the bills started coming in, totally over 7k. One for the doctor, one for the nurses, one for the pharmacy and one for the hospital. Then I called in to get itemized bill and they told me I was getting the discounted bill because I had no insurance. So 7K is the discount bill for 2 hours of hospital time to tell me my son has a fever. Thank you USA.

Doesn't necessarily have to be something exotic. I was prescribed something for my ADHD that was nearly that much out of pocket after insurance. I went back to my doctor and got a scrip for an older med that was available as a generic. $10/month.

I knew someone who stole a car and got caught on purpose so he could go to prison because he was diabetic and could not get his insulin. He said he was treated better in prison than he was on the outside. The moment he got out he was a felon so it was hard for him to get a job that had insurance. So he stole another car just to go back. His sister also had diabetes. She died from diabetic coma because she could not get her insulin.

I'm totally in on that one ... where is it? In germany (where I live ... well, try to, but ... anyway...), Doctors can involve authorities that are in charge of minors and can place a legal guardian among or in place of the parents on behalf of the childrens' interests, if parents chose to act against these. Often, jw parents just refuse knowledge about blood transfusions and such, sign the papers unread and walk away if the Doc talks too much. If they refuse, custody can temporarily be taken from them, or permanently. Organ donations, of course, can't be waved through by simply not paying attention, because they change your life and require a certain set of habits, ... anyway, where's where you live?

My mother was a nurse. They had a child from some super conservative Jewish family at the hospital because their child had an accident and was bleeding out. They refused a blood transfusion so it died - survival chances would have been almost 100% with a blood transfusion, but doctors couldn't legally do anything against their decision in such a short time frame. These s**t-parents should have been prosecuted with murder.

Guarantee it still happens where you live, legalities rarely ever matter. Laws aren't there for prevention, they exist to tell authorities what they can and cannot do AFTER the crime has been committed. Some believe they're meant as a deterrent, but rarely is that so.

We have really smart system in many Finnish companies. We have a goal, and if we go past it, we got more money in our paychecks. Last month we went about 8% over our goal amount, so we got about 1,50€ more pay for each hour we worked. And this is automatic thing and is completely separate from bonuses or raises.

Almost all campaigns, for both parties, are paid for by wealthy corporations and individuals, plus PACs and SuperPACs that money gets shoveled into by both domestic and foreign wealthy interests. When it comes time to vote in office, politicians vote strategically to make sure the people who pay for their career get what they paid for. It's not direct bribes that give us our main corruption, it's campaign money.

    Coyote Osborne

On top of that, politicians are allowed to invest in stocks and be involved in businesses that they then legislate. Look at Joe Manchin and coal. They get rich off this stuff, and vote to relax regulations that make them richer, or that impedes competitors so they can get richer.

If you need to make videos to feed your family, go do that. Leave your kids out of it, they aren't your employees or your meal ticket. There is nothing at all wrong with making your money online (in most cases). There is something seriously wrong with exploiting your children who can't even consent to being exploited legally-anywhere in the world. You ARE damaging them by making them be your unpaid employees so you can "earn your paper". Just, no, stop that c**p, be a grown up.

They added that they believe the American people should also "apply more critical thinking to everyday life and politics."

The redditor was realistic about the ability to create a perfectly fair society in the future.

"In theory it is possible. Whether we can achieve that right now in the US with current conditions, I believe that to be very unlikely," they said.

40 People Share What Horrible Things That Happen In Society Are Completely Legal To me, one of the worst is the way the elderly are treated. Especially when it comes to the costs associated with having to go into a nursing home. An entire lifetime of savings will be sucked away by the government, family homes confiscated. And all that after a lifetime of work and contributing to the economy. The final slap, it seems, is the outrageous cost of funerals and burials. It just seems insane to me. We can’t even die without someone making profit from it. And when you’re alive, it costs money just to exist.

A friend of my mother's spent the money she got off of selling her home on seeing a few primary school friends in Australia, Canada and elsewhere. She had been widow a few years, her kids have good jobs, and she decided to spend it on herself now rather than having to pay it to a nursing home if she ever needed it. ( Over here they are subsidised exept if you have money of yourself over a certain amount.) She's a legend : had not flown before and did it by herself in her seventies.

It's so unfair. People who never saved a penny in their lives are wholly subsidized when going into a nursing home. Not so when you've managed to save something to make life easier when you grow old. Then you have to pay for care yourself until your money runs out. You even have to sell your home if you have one. Holding on to your savings later in life is a precarious thing: if you see a nursing home in your future, better make arrangements whereby you still have access to your money but the authorities can't touch it or you can spend it all while you're still able to enjoy it.

That's a whole other world right there. We are dealing with this right now with my mother-in-law. She had worked her whole life and was thrifty so she could leave her kids something after she passed.....not any more. The care home is £4,000 a month and the council has decreed that they will take everything (leaving behind £21,000). So my hubby and I signed off our house to our daughters and we will be spending the cash on us travelling. At least we learnt the lesson the hard way!

Which is why my mother moved to Europe... A "skilled" medical care facility wanted $30,000 a month to take care of my dad with incurable pneumonia. He passed before that went into affect. He probably would have hastened the process himself had he known.

In the United States, you don't have to sell your house when you go to the nursing home. The government requires you to pay for your own care unless you have less than $2,000, but your home and vehicle are protected.

When you start thinking about all the numerous inequalities that plague society, you can easily end up feeling demotivated, disempowered, or drowning in anger. And while these reactions are perfectly normal, constantly living with them could negatively affect your quality of life. So it becomes important to shift your perspective a bit.

Try to reframe things so that you focus on what you can change instead of constantly obsessing about everything that’s wrong with the world. Taking action and making the world better one small step at a time is miles better than just venting about unfairness.

As psychologist Sherrie Bourg Carter, Psy.D., put it in a blog post on Psychology Today, viewing yourself as a victim isn’t helpful because it keeps you in the past and makes you feel powerless. “Bad things happen every day, but humans can be quite resilient. By stepping out of the victim mindset and viewing yourself as a survivor, you may find it easier to move forward and play an active role in creating a new outlook for yourself,” she says.

That's where the Supreme Court of the US came into play with Citizens United, allowing corporations (everyone actually) to spend unlimited amounts on elections. Not necessarily directly to the politician, but to his/her campaign, and apart from that, on their own campaigns for a candidate. It costs more than a billion dollars to buy the presidency in the US. That said, some one is going to profit on government run prisons too. Several of my friends in prison either pled guilty to crimes they didn't do (mostly, but not all, conspiracy), or plead to more than they had done. Why? Because the feds threatened to charge family members (including children in their teens) if the women did not plead. It’s also healthy to be aware of the nuances in life, instead of seeing everything as purely black or white. Yes, there is a lot of unfairness in society that can be incredibly frustrating. However, it is not just doom, gloom, and evil that you’ll find in the world. Positive and negative events constantly interweave in society.

“Even if nothing negative is happening in your own life, tragic, depressing stories are rampant in the media,” writes Bourg Carter. “That's not to suggest that you should bury your head in the sand and ignore current events, or pretend that bad things don't happen. They clearly do. However, in reality, what we hear and see on the news and the unfairness that happens in our personal lives are typically outliers in a world of mostly positive, kind, and pleasant interactions.”

America and sadly my country SA. We have a company called Discovery ( I call them discuntery). They basically reject a lot of claims and they say you are "out of medical savings" or "that is not within the rates" to evade payment. You end up paying like 40% anyway and the hospitals assume you'll get 100% covered so you get assrammed anyway. Public hospitals exist here (Free) but you will probably die due to them being lousy. they look at their policies. It's not about your health its about what they cover. If it's denied you write them a letter disputing the amount. A medical person will look at it. Denied again? Submit another appeal. A committee will look at it. When you submit an appeal they can't do anything like collection or harassment until it's resolved.

What would even be the criteria to enforce? Doubtful we all have the same definition of volume preferences.

The majority of states have an age floor of 16 for marriage. Five states have no age floor (which is not good), and 10 have banned child marriage. The lowest legal age, aside from having none, is 15 years old in Hawaii and Kansas. So, yes you are right and shouldn't have been downvoted. However, the US is far from being alone. Far too many countries allow it - or allow a minimum age to be ignored.

We just changed our law to outlaw it. In the previous regime (SA apartheid) a child could get married with parental permission. Dutch Reformed Church. Gross.

I had to read up cos my people too get slammed for it (romani) but I just tell them not all, my grandfathers moved to Australia so our women could have more choices in life instead of cultural expectations.

As we’ve mentioned on Bored Panda before, many people are raised to believe that life is perfectly fair or, well, at least that it should be. However, no matter how much we strive, we cannot change the world in a heartbeat. Real change takes generations of dedicated work to achieve, and you have to be realistic about this. Instead of thinking just about fairness, it might be a good idea to focus on becoming more resilient so that we can weather what life throws at us better.

Hopefully you do understand that ”Big Pharma” pay big taxes too, and those profits they make go to research, paying employees, buying materials, making sure production is up to standasrd, securing patents, and eventually lower cost for medications.

Not in all cases they do not. Can we take a look at insulin for a moment here? How about epi-pens? Almost none of the "profits" of those exorbitant costs passed on to patients (even in the few cases where insurance companies cover anything, which many do not) are put back into research, patents or lowering costs. The costs of medications is drastically rising, not falling, and many big pharma companies make record breaking profits each and every year. Have you actually ever worked in medical research? I assure you, employees don't often see that money either. Most pharma companies are pretty shady, they just want you to think they aren't, and you bought it hook line and sinker, didn't you? Big Pharma only "pays big" (in fines, mostly, not taxes) because they make those big profits they shouldn't off the backs of patients who can either buy their medication or suffer. Even in countries where cost isn't passed on to patients, pharma companies are shady af.

In Australia, where I work we get 10 sick days per year, that are rolled over into the next year, and so on. The government stopped people being paid out on sick leave when they left/retired, to stop those with illnesses coming in to work and spreading it around, all for a small bonus when they left. I still suffer colds from morons who come in to work sick. It should be illegal for anyone with a communicative disease to go to where it can be spread.

I have never understood this. I can see a company being concerned about the loss of your presence at work and the normal amount of work you do when you’re on the job. That makes sense, though everyone gets sick and everyone needs to take time off to just rest and recharge, ffs. But, whether you work, are on vacation, or are sick, you are still going to be paid the same amount, especially if you’re on salary. You do make extra money on vacation or sick days, you make the exact same amount you’d make if you worked. So why do companies insist on bitching about the money aspect of sick/vacation/personal time?

Doesn't matter that what they're dumping is raw sewage. It's absolutely disgusting. Most of the companies are being forced to lower bills next year, against inflation, to "pay back" their customers for ruining the environment.

That's because your country demanded those conditions and they accepted because there's an obscene amount of money in that industry, because they know they won't get any workers if they don't treat them reasonably ok, because they want to get the know-how before getting rid of their partners, and/or because they want to whitewash their image so as to get something else in the future. China treats their own workers ruthlessly, and their working conditions are virtual slavery. (Not only China, of course, but it's the country mentioned in the post)

Inflation. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this is how it works. So basically, the government needs more money, so they just print more money. However, printing more money makes the value of each dollar worth less, so eventually, everything will start getting priced higher and higher to keep up with the money being printed. Can we learn from history? In the past, this is happened SOO MANY times before. What? You want more moneys? Print more moneys, duh! Well now, since we're all so "rich" now, let's make all the prices higher! Yay!

I agree. Sometimes the quality has actually decreased with the higher price. I do wonder why people drive huge trucks since they are "gas hogs", costing them more money. Besides, depleting natural resources is harmful to our planet and worsens global warming. They can label it as "suspicious" and simply seize it from you. If you fight ridiculously hard, you can USUALLY get MOST of it back, and the rest goes directly to them. In Spain it happens if the amount is very high and in cash. It is kept in custody until its legality is proven. The other day the news came out that a car had an accident and the driver fled leaving the car and 180.000€ in the trunk. Then he went to the police station to try to recover it, he could not justify its origin and therefore ended up being investigated for money laundering.

Unfortunately, it goes together with the fact that it is not rape if it happens in marriage. In Finland it became a punishable crime only in 1994. Sick.

I remember something along the lines, if the spouse doesn't press charges, there's nothing we can do. That was after I called the police bc a friend of mine was beat up by her husband. She didn't press charges and they couldn't/ wouldn't do anything. Now this was 20 years ago. The laws have changed since then, but still 20 years ago was the 2000. Boggles the mind. (Edit: to clarify, this was in Switzerland)

Most cases in China goes unchecked even if it is legal, because If a woman said she got abuse she will be shamed by friends and family. If a man says he got abused by his spouse, he will be called a coward, so most victims of abuse keep it to themselves. I can't speak abut other countries as I do not have extensive knowledge about their culture and practices but I would assume this is more common in 2nd and 3rd world countries.

Lol, not hardly they are more talked about in the news than others. I have never heard the news say anything about people dying due to medical neglect due to finances, but have known countless people die from that than od (and i was a homeless heroin/fentanyl addict who got lucky). Also access to narcan and other harm reduction tools would greatly reduce ods. Narcan saves lives, clean utensils saves lives, easier accessible drug treatment saves lives. The drug over dose issue (in america) is a direct result of the wildly impossible access to healthcare. Rehabs, detours, sober living, are expensive and without money pretty much impossible. Medicaid and Medicare wont cover it and it's impossible for a single person to get. I lucked out and met angels who went above and beyond to help support me while I got clean. I didn't know a single one of them before my sobriety date. I haven't heard or met anyone else that went through the same situation getting clean and off the streets.

This should be higher. The entire animal industry harms so many humans, that even if the animals involved would be feelingsless biorobots, like Descartes famous misconception claimed them to be, the impact it has on human lives and the general environment should make it impossible for them to sell any product at all. It's earned to be boycotted into bankruptcy, as an entire industry, at least three times seperately, but still is one of the most profitable recipients of tax money to ever have existed. And atop, people have the audacity to blame vegetarians for plantations that serve the meat industry only, but happen to be soy, the only food vegetarians know of.

There have been studies which do seem to show a benefit in lowering the spread of disease, however these tend to be misused by proponents of circumcision. The studies which support its health benefits are mostly done in Africa with heterosexual men, in areas with limited access to safer sex aids and healthcare. While it's shows benefits there, you cannot just apply the findings to different societies where there may be much more effective methods of preventing the spread of disease. For example those studies showed a decrease in HPV, however if you compare HPV rates in the US to the UK, the UK is significantly lower despite circumcision not being the norm. This is likely due higher rates of vaccination, which is a far better way to fight HPV than circumcisions. Just because there appears to be a benefit by doing something doesn't mean it is actually the most beneficial way.

Family vlogging (specifically families with children). It should straight up be illegal to do, you're trading your children's privacy for profit and all the while they have no say in the matter and they won't get a single cent from the revenue once they're old enough to ask for it. Time and time again we see child actors grow up with horrific trauma that was inflicted on them from the industry - the trauma from having to be the breadwinner as a CHILD is enough honestly, but then you add on the s**t we know they go through too. And that's and industry that's at least somewhat regulated (not regulated well mind you but it's *something*). What the fuckdo we think children of family and mommy vloggers are going through? IMAGINE being presented with having a camera pointed at you 24/7 by your own caregivers, who willingly put your face, name, and most intimate moments on the internet for anyone to find and use against you AS A CHILD - all the while knowing that you're the reason your family gets to put food on the table and that if you say you don't want to vlog your life anymore it's on YOU for removing the income source. It's f*****g hellish.

I always thought influencers were bad - how weak-minded do you have to be to have someone tell you what to wear, what to listen to, what to think. But then Vloggers that prank their children hopefully have reserved a special layer in Hell, just for them. What they do is abuse, not entertainment. And it's allowed to happen.

It seems like every family that has multiples (triplets, quads, quints, etc.) has a damn YouTube channel where they post every detail of their children's lives. Do they not understand how dangerous that is? They show where they live, shop, vacation....and then people comment how much they love the kids and refer to them as "ours". Like "Our triplets are growing up so fast!" from a perfect stranger on the web. It's creepy!

Why would people raise money for the police? Surely Sting & Co have quite enough of the stuff?

Also, I believe in most countries police officers are not allowed to do fundraising - or at least not while saying they are an officer. Exactly to avoid people being scared not to donate.

I'd say this would fall under bribery (not of the specific officer asking but of the police as a whole). 🤔 I don't think this is allowed where I live.

Honestly, I'd rather see scammers take police donations than actually giving it to thugs with badges. Police departments are already overfunded for what they do for society.

There are still states where the age where a girl can legally marry is LOWER than the age of consent. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marriage_age_in_the_United_States

I wish the "men" who marry them got punished for rape of a minor if they ever get pregnant.

Should be punished just for the marriage, plus getting pregnant wouldn't be the only time they would have been raped.

Note that frequently, the parents push marriage on their own child who was raped by perhaps a "friend" so they can avoid charges of statutory rape. I cannot begin to wrap my mind around parents who would do this to their own child.

In the company where I work, they have decided to reduce the levels between the employee and the president of the company. They have already eliminated two levels that are clearly unnecessary, and since the remaining levels have more employees under them, it has resulted in empowering the employees and reducing micromanagement, improving the work environment.

nah sometimes it's better for a bad parent to leave than to stay and poison everyone. I would have blown my brains out at nine years old if I had to live with my father full time.

I've raised 4 throw away kids. Thrown away at 13 or 14, when they get inconvenient. Zero dollars in child support. 2 kids had a dad earning 200 k a year. I dislike him immensely.
