I lived in a place that caught on fire...that’s probably the most frightened I’ve ever been. Oh, also that time I got lost in the snow in Yosemite. It made me afraid of the outdoors for pretty much the rest of my life.

As a new home buyer, we can't see the hidden defects with the home but a home inspector can, so before buying a new home we should invest on home inspection. https://www.homeinspectionscenter.com/

We reached out to the creator of the account and the founder of Boston Home Inspectors, Inc., James Brock, who has seen pretty much everything in his line of work. As a business, they are proud of their reputation for thoroughness. They believe that a half-hearted inspection serves no one and put all of their focus on identifying the problems and putting them into proper perspective.

When asked about the inspiration behind the account, Brock told us that the idea was suggested by his daughter when they were out for pizza one day in 2016. "She had been on many inspections over the years to earn some spending money," he said.

"She gave the idea that I should post some of the funny things that we find during the inspections." The thought might have sounded strange at the time, but he decided to try it out. Ever since his first post, the account has grown and reached more than 16.4k followers who enjoy seeing bizarre things the inspectors find every day.

No normal temp for hot water from your tap is 120 Fahrenheit or 49 Celsius. This water is hot enough to give you a third degree burn if you stick your hand in it for 2 seconds [temp to get a 3rd degree burn is 150 Fahrenheit, 65 Celsius]

When it comes to choosing which images to post on social media, there’s plenty of worthy material out there. The home inspector has captured more than 1500 pictures of questionable scenarios and objects left in plain sight while performing check-ups. Out of those, he has created a library of more than 200 images ready to be shared with the people of the Internet.

If you think that’s quite the number of missteps that owners do in order to improve their homes, that’s not even half of it. "There are many funny, crazy and scary things we find that just do not photograph well so we miss out on those," he said.

My son in law likes to let his get like this before he can be guilted into changing it, in a brand new home also. The last time he did it he had kept telling his wife that it had just been a couple months but she had written the month and year on the filter. When he finally changed it, it had been a year and it looked like that one. It was disgusting and no wonder everyone's allergies were going crazy.

professor time :D it’s an old barn. the hay bundles were raised to this opening by a pulley attached to the roof beam and stored upstairs, dry and sheltered.

This isn't uncommon for warehouse/garage/shops. it makes it easy to fork things to the second story instead of having to figure out how to get them upstairs. I have one at my office, and my coworker has one at his house on his workshop.

That's a converted barn. Barns have doors up there. The owners obviously wanted it to look better/let in natural light. It's not really weird unless you have a great ignorance of barns.

If you are ignorant - that used to be a hole to pass bales of hay through. The lower level is for livestock, farm equipment, etc and the hay goes up top. A full hay wagon will reach the top of that upper door so instead of throwing a 120lb bale of hay 18 ft down on the ground then carrying it back up the 18 ft, it goes through the hole. When you need to get a bale of hay, you pull up the wagon/pick up truck and throw it out into the bed. Once, again avoid moving a 120lb twice unnecessarily. There's a good chance you'll throw it out the upper door even if its for livestock below. You avoid crushing a barn cat or that calf that slipped out the stall not closed all the way.

Brock does not want to overwhelm his followers, so he decided to post only one picture a day. The inspector told us that he did not intend for the account to become a place to lecture people on the things they shouldn’t do but rather "wanted the account to be light and funny for the viewer". It’s the place where people can go and relate to the images as homeowners and feel glad that their homes do not look like that.

The home inspector also enjoys reading the replies of his audience: "Many of the viewers have a great wit and sense of humor. I often find myself saying 'Oh, I wish I would have thought of that comment to write'."

The industry experts are interested in the content James Brock shares, too. He mentioned that sometimes he receives emails from other home inspectors or tradesmen saying "you failed to mention this problem in the background". But the creator has a lighthearted view on such remarks and replies that "this Instagram account is not a written full-fledged report" and shares a few laughs with his colleagues.

This is not Boston, it is the Sandals Royal Barbados resort (I stayed it the room on the top right). The ramps are sloped because the building to the left in the pic has pools in the suites so the floors are spaced further apart. They used a sloped ramps because the elevators are in the building to the right of the pic (Wahoo Bldg if you look on their website).

My mom collects the plug in ones because they are usually free with coupons. I guess they expect you to buy the refills but she never does. She will just buy another brand but doesn't get rid of the old plug in just in case.

More than likely it was a very large apartment at one time and the owner decided to make it into two apartments. So he put some studs up and insulation up and closed the door on either side. I’ve seen a lot of those in New York, Brooklyn, and those areas.

There is a cord hanging in front of the windows so hopefully there is a shade or something they can drop down.

The experts not only check the main things like structure and exterior of the house and the basement but also windows, doors, fire hazards, appliances and outlets. They find the areas that cause concern and provide the information to the client. As they state on their website, "At the end of the inspection, the inspector will review the detailed report line-by-line and discuss the findings and recommendations. You will have a better understanding of the investment you are about to make."

On much older houses, pocket doors had hardware which included a little tab (all brass, BTW) on the side of the door, which could be lifted and then the door pulled closed. I've seen some beautifully ornate castings in historic houses.

I built a deck and the inspector made me replace the screws with 10d nails. Seriously, I was forced to remove ceramic coated case hardened screws to use galvanized nails I can bend with my fingers. I even pointed this out along with the fact, nails often come out over time, screws do not.

I love wool, it will keep you warm even when it's wet! My favorite slipper boots are 1/8" thick felted wool. Altho that looks more like a cotton or polyester batting for quilts to me, but it could be wool.

For most tub drains in the US (I don't know how it works elsewhere), you can get an inexpensive tool called a drain wrench that allows you do remove the drain for cleaning. This is much easier than trying to pick gloop out of the drain while installed.

found a can of 1960's/70's hairspray in a wall of a 1920 home. Still haven't figured out how it got there, there were no holes or repair places in the lathe and plaster. For inquiring minds, yes it still sprayed. One quick shot stunk up the hole house for hours. Every ingredient in that hair spray is flammable. They don't make 'em like they used to.

People need to have pride in their work and doing it correctly. Handyman and builder here and this is so sad and possibly dangerous. Black mold is nothing to mess with. Would you do your house this way? Unless it was the home owner and not contractors that did this. At least put some caulk or something so the wood doesn't continue to get wet. Prime spot for serious mold. Is this ignorance or laziness?

Contractors get away with a lot that would shock you because inspectors just "trust" them to do it right. Even though I was onsite for most of my house build, the contractor still snuck in a hidden junction and never hooked the earth ground to the in shower light/fan so the GFIC was rendered useless. I found these when doing a kitchen reno and replacing the light/fan unit. I on the other hand am inspected closely on everything I do on a restoration I'm doing on another house I bought.

The guy who designed the Eniac (one of the first computers) knew mice chewing on the insulation was going to be a severe problem. He starved a bunch of mice/rats, then put them in a cage with various wire samples. The wire that was chewed the least was used.

Mine looked better than that and I had to call ten electricians before I found one willing to come work on it. Might have had to call more, but we found the one the shady flipper made to sign off on the fraudulent work, so he got threatened with a lawsuit if he didn't come fix it.

There was a brand of circuit breaker sold in Canada that electricians started to refuse to install. Quality control was terrible. Some case you could WELD with the circuit and the breaker wouldn't pop. Other times it would pop if you sneezed. Fuses would be safer in this case

If the actual problem was insufficient slope on the property, this IS fixing the problem. The alternative is to tear down the house and rebuild it a foot higher.

Where I live, in the county you can dispose of runoff pretty much as you please. However, I'm renovating a 1920 bungalow in the city and there you can only dump runoff into the street gutter or into your own yard. Fine except the street is higher than my downspouts and dumping into the yard resorts in it finding it's way into the basement even though the property has good elevation and nothing but trees and scrub behind the house. Therefore I have to install a $10000 sump pump to keep my basement dry because the city is stupid.

You dont need it fully exposed unless theres a window above it, this isnt a big deal. They have it closed off to send heat to other vents

Freezers and refridgerators makes the room warmer though, they output heat so they can cool down the inside. Conservation of energy and entropy in action.

Not really related but our local nightclub in the eighties and nineties was called 'Rooftop Gardens'. Anyway, I was in there thinking I was a cool cat in my fancy cream blazer straight out of Miami Vice. I hadn't been strutting my stuff for long when a fight breaks out right next to me. I turned to look just in time for one guy to bust the nose of another chap and the result was that my swanky new jacket had a delightful red stripe across it. Just reminded me. Thought you'd like to know.

I gotta say my buddy nearly burned down his best friends multi-million dollar home by forgetting to turn off the bbq grill before putting it next to the house. He remembered while driving away, came back to see the paint on the house behind the grill starting to bubble.

When I was young we lived in what had once been the old wooden farm house for the area, but at that time it was the only old house in the neighborhood. It was situated on a corner and there was a front porch on either side of the outermost corner. On the less-busy side, there were a couple of broken boards in the side just below the kitchen and some wasps had made their nest in there; and on what we considered the main porch there were bees who appeared to be interested in using the rain pipe as a potential hive. My brother Tim stepped on a dying be and was stung, which is how we learned he’s allergic to bees.

That looks more like roof rat debris, fibers pushed down the crack, pee drips on the wall. Not wasps, doubt if it's bees. Those are not insects at the top.

Our bedroom light fitting was similarly placed and after investigating it became apparent. The lights were placed so as not to cast a shadow over the window dressings (curtains etc.) and preserve a lady's (and a chap's) privacy when dressing. I would be delighted if anyone could confirm or correct please pandas.

Water is going in the opposite direction you think it is. The bucket has a submersible pump in it, which is discharging into the white PVC on the left. Presumably it's catching a drip from somewhere.

Does anyone know what is going on here? Car battery, charger, inverter - doing what? After researching what an inverter does, seems like he's too cheap to install a battery bank for his solar panel.

Nothing may obstruct access to an electrical disconnect panel. Technically this could be fine if the cabinet door were labeled as containing the electrical disconnect, and nobody ever put anything on the bottom shelf.

Nothing wrong here. Just typical wood checks. You will never avoid this unless you mill your own lumber or hand pick thru the boards at the lumber yard. Even then you will need to know exactly what to look for to get the best boards. Wood shrinks roughly twice as much along with the growth rings as it does across the rings .

My old mobile home settled a lot and the kitchen drain pushed up thru the sink. Had to wash dishes in the tub, til the tub drain rotted thru and collapsed. Better house now, different problems. I hate being my own landlord.

Why do people not clean the hair out of their drains? I've had long hair my whole life all it takes is popping the drain cover up and cleaning it once or twice a month and this never happens. I'm honestly shocked that this is now considered a "life hack" and not just common knowledge.

    Tim Douglass

Because "common knowledge" is only common if it's taught. Those life hacks are teaching people. Remember, you didn't know it until you learned it either.

Arc fault on every circuit? Guess they don't have ceiling fans and don't plan on using any other motor driven devices. Even an Xbox will trip these nuisance breakers. Usually only required for outlets in bedrooms due to dust build up because outlets always end up behind dressers and beds because builders still havn't grasped the idea to put outlets closer to the corners of the room
