Nothing Can Possibly Go Wrong Here!
I lived in a place that caught on fire...that’s probably the most frightened I’ve ever been. Oh, also that time I got lost in the snow in Yosemite. It made me afraid of the outdoors for pretty much the rest of my life.
Fire is very scary. We had a chimney fire this spring. All went well, fire brigade came but maaaan, was I frightened.
Load More Replies...As a new home buyer, we can't see the hidden defects with the home but a home inspector can, so before buying a new home we should invest on home inspection. https://www.homeinspectionscenter.com/
Yall don't get it. This is where you can bake some cookies while you drop some stinkers and make the experience much better.
We reached out to the creator of the account and the founder of Boston Home Inspectors, Inc., James Brock, who has seen pretty much everything in his line of work. As a business, they are proud of their reputation for thoroughness. They believe that a half-hearted inspection serves no one and put all of their focus on identifying the problems and putting them into proper perspective.
When asked about the inspiration behind the account, Brock told us that the idea was suggested by his daughter when they were out for pizza one day in 2016. "She had been on many inspections over the years to earn some spending money," he said.
"She gave the idea that I should post some of the funny things that we find during the inspections." The thought might have sounded strange at the time, but he decided to try it out. Ever since his first post, the account has grown and reached more than 16.4k followers who enjoy seeing bizarre things the inspectors find every day.

The home inspector has captured more than 1500 pictures of questionable scenarios and objects left in plain sight while performing check-ups. Out of those, he has created a library of more than 200 images ready to be shared with the people of the Internet.
If you think that’s quite the number of missteps that owners do in order to improve their homes, that’s not even half of it. "There are many funny, crazy and scary things we find that just do not photograph well so we miss out on those," he said.
Masks Aren’t Saving You From This..yuck!
My son in law likes to let his get like this before he can be guilted into changing it, in a brand new home also. The last time he did it he had kept telling his wife that it had just been a couple months but she had written the month and year on the filter. When he finally changed it, it had been a year and it looked like that one. It was disgusting and no wonder everyone's allergies were going crazy.
Load More Replies...All that caught in a big lacey filter and you still don't think masks do anything?
Yes they do -- they can help quite a lot actually.

Mother-In-Law Door!
sequence: you fall down, then garage door open, aaaaaand the car rolls over you
professor time :D it’s an old barn. the hay bundles were raised to this opening by a pulley attached to the roof beam and stored upstairs, dry and sheltered.
This isn't uncommon for warehouse/garage/shops. it makes it easy to fork things to the second story instead of having to figure out how to get them upstairs. I have one at my office, and my coworker has one at his house on his workshop.
That's a converted barn. Barns have doors up there. The owners obviously wanted it to look better/let in natural light. It's not really weird unless you have a great ignorance of barns.
If you are ignorant - that used to be a hole to pass bales of hay through. The lower level is for livestock, farm equipment, etc and the hay goes up top. A full hay wagon will reach the top of that upper door so instead of throwing a 120lb bale of hay 18 ft down on the ground then carrying it back up the 18 ft, it goes through the hole. When you need to get a bale of hay, you pull up the wagon/pick up truck and throw it out into the bed. Once, again avoid moving a 120lb twice unnecessarily. There's a good chance you'll throw it out the upper door even if its for livestock below. You avoid crushing a barn cat or that calf that slipped out the stall not closed all the way.
Load More Replies...Some houses in northern Michigan and Canada have second story doors for when the snow blocks the ground floor.
They have houses like that in upstate New York too, especially around Buffalo, where they can get 130" of snow.
Load More Replies...Surely this is an old barn conversion, the doors at the top would have been for deliveries.
Brock does not want to overwhelm his followers, so he decided to post only one picture a day. The inspector told us that he did not intend for the account to become a place to lecture people on the things they shouldn’t do but rather "wanted the account to be light and funny for the viewer". It’s the place where people can go and relate to the images as homeowners and feel glad that their homes do not look like that.
The home inspector also enjoys reading the replies of his audience: "Many of the viewers have a great wit and sense of humor. I often find myself saying 'Oh, I wish I would have thought of that comment to write'."
When You Want To Share Your Experiences With Other!
I have no idea if this is the case, but a friend of mine used to live in a building with a similar set up to rinse off before using the rooftop pool. It looks like it could be kind of cold there for a year around rooftop pool but who knows.
I mean, it’s a Boston. I know they have warm summers I just don’t know if rooftop pools are a thing there.
Load More Replies...I don't see a problem here. It's clearly a repurposed shower to rinse off dirt or else before entering the spa to preventing making the spa dirty.
The electric lights draped across the top are a bit of an issue though!

Who Farted? Oh Wrong Gas Smell!
last time I saw that stuff on a pipe I was 65 feet down, in a ship wreck...
The part to the left look fairly new but a rusty pipe looks hooked up to it - the installer of the new piece should be fired!
The industry experts are interested in the content James Brock shares, too. He mentioned that sometimes he receives emails from other home inspectors or tradesmen saying "you failed to mention this problem in the background". But the creator has a lighthearted view on such remarks and replies that "this Instagram account is not a written full-fledged report" and shares a few laughs with his colleagues.
The New Green Gutter!
Thats a freaking forest on the gutter..might find a couple critters too
NOT GOOD FOR A ROOF. THAT WILL CAUSE WATER TO BUILD UP AND SEEP UNDER THE SHINGLES....ROTTING SETS IN AND MOLD AND OTHER CRAP.
My neighbor, who I call Bozo, has cleaned out his gutters exactly once in the 6 years he's lived there. He has a large maple tree that hangs over his house so you can imagine how many "whirlybird" maple seeds end up in his gutters. And yes, they grow. I call it his "gutter garden."

Yep, the palm trees definitely don't say Boston to me! Thanks for the info!

This isn't Boston. The palm trees, the white building, this is Florida or some other sub-tropical place.
A new home might be one of the biggest investments you’ll ever make and sometimes you can make some costly mistakes. Especially if you don’t know where to look. Having your house professionally checked by a structural inspector might give you information about certain defects that will save you thousands of dollars.
"Okay Move Along, Move Along People, There's Nothing To See Here!" Only 46 Air Fresheners In The House!
Air fresheners should mandatorily be called by their real name: Stench-to-hide-Worse-Stench devices.
And I've got a severe headache! I can barely walk down the aisle in the grocery store with all the air fresheners on the shelves, this would practically kill me!

Shower With A View!
True story: A couple moved into their newly built home, complete with one way glass in the master bath shower. A few days later, they received an anonymous letter from a neighbor: "The window in your shower has been installed backwards. We can see everything."
Load More Replies...Or a regular window curtain. I don't understand the trend of not having curtains on your windows
Load More Replies...Strange. Here in AZ is very popular to have a glass wall in the shower. Granted, most people have 8 foot privacy walls.. my grandparents planted a climbing plant of some sort for theirs. It's a beautiful and peaceful way to shower
There is a cord hanging in front of the windows so hopefully there is a shade or something they can drop down.
The experts not only check the main things like structure and exterior of the house and the basement but also windows, doors, fire hazards, appliances and outlets. They find the areas that cause concern and provide the information to the client. As they state on their website, "At the end of the inspection, the inspector will review the detailed report line-by-line and discuss the findings and recommendations. You will have a better understanding of the investment you are about to make."
Close!
My guess is pocket doors that go too far into the pocket and this is the only way to fish them out to close them
On much older houses, pocket doors had hardware which included a little tab (all brass, BTW) on the side of the door, which could be lifted and then the door pulled closed. I've seen some beautifully ornate castings in historic houses.

I built a deck and the inspector made me replace the screws with 10d nails. Seriously, I was forced to remove ceramic coated case hardened screws to use galvanized nails I can bend with my fingers. I even pointed this out along with the fact, nails often come out over time, screws do not.
Riding The Waves To The Bathroom...
The concern is, how did the floor flood because if it happened once, assuming the problem wasn't disclosed, it'll happen again.
Could have been a leak from the bathroom fixtures water will do that to the wood.
Load More Replies...It is light reflections - off the warped floorboards that probably got wet when the toilet just inside the bathroom door overflowed.
Load More Replies...Must Be a guidance for blind people "you are going to the bathroom, this way, go on, nearly there"
Either there is a current water leak there, or the apartment flooded at sometime or another.
Just remember that your home requires regular maintenance and yearly inspection. So if you wish that pictures of your house do not end up on the Boston Home Inspectors Instagram account, make sure to check the things lurking behind the walls, under decks and in the ceiling. And if you need help, don’t hesitate to contact a professional tradesman who can give you a list of the things you should focus on.
Interesting!
Shepherdess here....yes, you can use wool for insulation. It works very well. Think of how nice a wool sweater feels on a cold day. Now imagine that around your entire house! It's all natural and doesn't ha e any if that nasty stuff that "normal" insulation has. BAAAAA
I love wool, it will keep you warm even when it's wet! My favorite slipper boots are 1/8" thick felted wool. Altho that looks more like a cotton or polyester batting for quilts to me, but it could be wool.

Load More Replies...Remember To Clean Your Shower Drain
In Germany, most renting contract make it mandatory to repaint the walls in white, but not to clean the apartment/house (in France, it is the reverse : the place may looked used, but it must be clean). The things we needed to clean when we arrived. I would have loved a mask.

Load More Replies...I would not have known that was a drain. My shower drains are always way more obvious.
Shortcut!
That could be the stairs from my loft bedroom! Our dogs like to do the parkour thing onto the third/fourth step and then race down. We had a railing on the 'parkour' jump spot, but they were vaulting it and hurting their noggins on the wall so we had to take it down (one evil vs another)
A crappy little rental house we had when I was a kid had the same thing, no railing along the stairs OR at the top. Oh, and there was a nice, big window on the landing at the bottom.
Just A Tad More!
Looks like the same deck as above! They apparently screwed up the whole thing. If you are using trex, at least do the correct wood parts before installing it.

Just what I need a sink that wobbles when you run water in it! SUPER!
Load More Replies...That would be a bitch to clean and prevent mould build up.
Yet another reason to dislike undermount sinks. All too often they are merely glued to the bottom of the countertop, great for a year or so, then this happens.
People need to have pride in their work and doing it correctly. Handyman and builder here and this is so sad and possibly dangerous. Black mold is nothing to mess with. Would you do your house this way? Unless it was the home owner and not contractors that did this. At least put some caulk or something so the wood doesn't continue to get wet. Prime spot for serious mold. Is this ignorance or laziness?
Painting Over The Termites Makes Them Go Away...
No, it just hides them long enough from the buyers so it won't be your problem anymore but theirs.
But The City Permits Were Signed Off…
Considering it will only leak while the shower is engaged it shouldn't be too bad.
Load More Replies...Contractors get away with a lot that would shock you because inspectors just "trust" them to do it right. Even though I was onsite for most of my house build, the contractor still snuck in a hidden junction and never hooked the earth ground to the in shower light/fan so the GFIC was rendered useless. I found these when doing a kitchen reno and replacing the light/fan unit. I on the other hand am inspected closely on everything I do on a restoration I'm doing on another house I bought.

Awww.... Who is the most adorable fire hazard? Yes you are! Yes you are!
Not a mouse - it's a shrew. Hard to catch as they're smaller and lighter so don't set the traps off, and have never found out what bait they'll take...
Voles don't have long tails. It is a form of a mouse. It may be a house mouse (Mus musculus) or a deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus)
Load More Replies...Deer mouse, those little turd nuggets will strip wire insulation off causing a fire hazard among other not so nice things.
You know why they chew the wires? There is peanut oil used on the plastic wire covering
Load More Replies...The guy who designed the Eniac (one of the first computers) knew mice chewing on the insulation was going to be a severe problem. He starved a bunch of mice/rats, then put them in a cage with various wire samples. The wire that was chewed the least was used.

They are actually surprisingly safe. Well, as in they are not the fire hazard you'd expect them to be.
Mine looked better than that and I had to call ten electricians before I found one willing to come work on it. Might have had to call more, but we found the one the shady flipper made to sign off on the fraudulent work, so he got threatened with a lawsuit if he didn't come fix it.

Load More Replies...We had one in our old house we just moved out of and it never did anything close to catching on fire... because it was surrounded by asbestos.
Hmm, it's not so much the box, it's the decaying insulation on all of the k**b and tube you can't see.
There was a brand of circuit breaker sold in Canada that electricians started to refuse to install. Quality control was terrible. Some case you could WELD with the circuit and the breaker wouldn't pop. Other times it would pop if you sneezed. Fuses would be safer in this case
Just Why?
Small bedroom turned into a walk-in closet? Torture chamber? What in the H.E.L.L. does this signify?

Pour Twice...measure Once!
This Looks About Right!
Looks like the water was getting in the house, so instead of fixing the actual problem, they did this to steer water to the street. Very nice use of lawn chair.
If the actual problem was insufficient slope on the property, this IS fixing the problem. The alternative is to tear down the house and rebuild it a foot higher.
Load More Replies...Where I live, in the county you can dispose of runoff pretty much as you please. However, I'm renovating a 1920 bungalow in the city and there you can only dump runoff into the street gutter or into your own yard. Fine except the street is higher than my downspouts and dumping into the yard resorts in it finding it's way into the basement even though the property has good elevation and nothing but trees and scrub behind the house. Therefore I have to install a $10000 sump pump to keep my basement dry because the city is stupid.
May Be Hard To See... Look At The Size Of The Skylight vs. The Opening. They Also Just Silicones The Glass To The Framing!
This isn't actually uncommon. If a replacement skylight is larger, and the "tunnel" is in good shape, this works fine - here's mine - IMG_0353-6...612888.jpg
This is also how you get a 'frameless' installation. The wallboard on the inside goes right up to the glass.

Un..bee..lievable!
When I was young we lived in what had once been the old wooden farm house for the area, but at that time it was the only old house in the neighborhood. It was situated on a corner and there was a front porch on either side of the outermost corner. On the less-busy side, there were a couple of broken boards in the side just below the kitchen and some wasps had made their nest in there; and on what we considered the main porch there were bees who appeared to be interested in using the rain pipe as a potential hive. My brother Tim stepped on a dying be and was stung, which is how we learned he’s allergic to bees.
That looks more like roof rat debris, fibers pushed down the crack, pee drips on the wall. Not wasps, doubt if it's bees. Those are not insects at the top.

Puzzling...
Kids dropping things thru the register grate? I found all kinds of things under mine, and I don't have kids.

if it’s in the usa and behind them are toilets, I’d say the door’s too big
As an American that door is just the perfect size for a public toilet. Not that I agree with our standard.

Why Not The Center Of The Room?
Our bedroom light fitting was similarly placed and after investigating it became apparent. The lights were placed so as not to cast a shadow over the window dressings (curtains etc.) and preserve a lady's (and a chap's) privacy when dressing. I would be delighted if anyone could confirm or correct please pandas.
@scagsy Yes I think you're right, the lights in the main bedroom (and only the bedroom) are in a similar position to those in the picture, it's a very old house!
Load More Replies...this is an obvious one if you are of a certain age. Back in the 60s-70s Mom talked Dad into putting up a cool lamp there for ambiance. swag-61bb6...207592.png
Considering the scale of the room, I'm guessing rather low ceiling height.
We have this in our bedrooms too. I just don't know why either. We don't use the overhead light much so it doesn't matter really.

The one pictured above is a temporary-style (two-piece) column, and not for permanent use. In permanent columns the pipe is one piece and the screw goes on the bottom. Once the beam is properly leveled the screw and the base of the column are covered in concrete.

Ok but I’ve been trying to figure out how to not get lint all over everything in the carport cause that’s where my vent lets out for my dryer!
Tie an old stocking over the vent pipe (take the little door off first), replace as needed.

How else are you going to hold up the cabinet? Actually secure it to the wall? Come on!
I wish I had a way to wedge my sagging upper cabinets like that. I had to trade my plates for cereal and crackers.

Water is going in the opposite direction you think it is. The bucket has a submersible pump in it, which is discharging into the white PVC on the left. Presumably it's catching a drip from somewhere.

So Much Wrong In Such A Little Space
Does anyone know what is going on here? Car battery, charger, inverter - doing what? After researching what an inverter does, seems like he's too cheap to install a battery bank for his solar panel.
But Of Course Permits Were Pulled For This Renovation…
Nothing may obstruct access to an electrical disconnect panel. Technically this could be fine if the cabinet door were labeled as containing the electrical disconnect, and nobody ever put anything on the bottom shelf.

Nothing wrong here. Just typical wood checks. You will never avoid this unless you mill your own lumber or hand pick thru the boards at the lumber yard. Even then you will need to know exactly what to look for to get the best boards. Wood shrinks roughly twice as much along with the growth rings as it does across the rings .

My old mobile home settled a lot and the kitchen drain pushed up thru the sink. Had to wash dishes in the tub, til the tub drain rotted thru and collapsed. Better house now, different problems. I hate being my own landlord.
Yeah, since I bought my own house I've discovered that I'm really not a very good landlord. At least I don't call to do my annual inspection at 7 AM on a Saturday!

Why do people not clean the hair out of their drains? I've had long hair my whole life all it takes is popping the drain cover up and cleaning it once or twice a month and this never happens. I'm honestly shocked that this is now considered a "life hack" and not just common knowledge.
Because "common knowledge" is only common if it's taught. Those life hacks are teaching people. Remember, you didn't know it until you learned it either.

Arc fault on every circuit? Guess they don't have ceiling fans and don't plan on using any other motor driven devices. Even an Xbox will trip these nuisance breakers. Usually only required for outlets in bedrooms due to dust build up because outlets always end up behind dressers and beds because builders still havn't grasped the idea to put outlets closer to the corners of the room
Without more context I am left assuming that it means "Power In Garage" as none of the other labels suggest anything garage related.

My floor looks like this because we are continually fetching the dog’s toy out from under the sofa🙄 (yeah, we put pads on the feet of the couch, but it’s so often we move it that it has worn marks into the hardwood.)
Maybe one person lift one end while the other sweeps the toys out? It would help with the marks :)

As an european, I really cant understand the concept of "american house" made of cardboard & some kind of wood.
Watch videos of the aftermath of hurricanes and tornadoes. No matter what you make the house out of, its going down. If it was brick it's a lot harder to cleanup and rebuild.
