I gues because "helping colonisation" doesn't sound so good. Wonderful selfless act of an individual, pretty awful when looking at the bigger picture

Human history is sobering. The sheer amount of pain inflicted upon one another defies belief. And don't get me started on how much of that was under religious doctrine.

Read up on this. It seems the women in town, who were allowed to vote back then, (one of the few places) conspired to help by learning that the male turnout was usually low, So the women held off voting until late in the day, when it was virtually impossible to rally the men to vote to offset the crowd of women voters before the polls closed.

There’s probably no more entertaining way to learn history than through memes and engaging online content. Let’s be honest—it’s far more captivating than textbooks. To explore why history feels exciting everywhere but the classroom, Bored Panda reached out to Angel Lawson, a history postgraduate student at the University of Birmingham and content creator on Instagram and TikTok.

“I find that history curriculums, especially in the UK, aren’t designed to make you love learning, and that definitely translates into how history is taught in UK schools,” Angel told us. “The majority of history curriculums focus on the last three hundred years and are so broad that you never get to explore the ‘nitty-gritty’ facts that might interest a wider range of people.”

Angel explained that the pressure to achieve good grades is also a factor. “The goal of needing to get a grade in GCSE and A-Level by learning broad facts is why many people don’t find history interesting. Regurgitating the same topics over and over again—like Weimar Germany or the Industrial Revolution—isn’t something most people particularly enjoy.”

I had a friend who was LDS. I loved her. She was an amazing friend… but. She used to cross stitch and one time when she was staying with me, she hadn’t brought anything to stitch so we went to Joanne’s and got her a kit. She was very excited to get one of “our Lord” but was very upset when she was sorting the threads that the thread for his eyes was brown. “Our Lord had blue eyes” she said. I pointed out that as a person from Nazareth that wasn’t likely. That comment not go down well.

brazil also declared war on germany. sent 50,000 troops to be trained and equipped by the united states. when they were ready, brazilain soldiers were sent to fight in the italian front. in early april 1945, the crack 141st german mountaineering divison (14,00 men) was trying to reach the border in northern italy for home. the brazilian contingent cut them off at collechio and fought them to a standstill for three days. the german commander had no choice but to surrender to the brazilian soldiers!

My Grandfather was one of those Brazilian soldiers. India had 2,5 million soldiers, and the United Kingdom had another 3 million. The USA had 16,4 million soldiers fight in the war. But the Soviets had the most soldiers in the fight. At one point, 1 in every 3 soldiers fighting in the war was a Soviet. They contributed mover 34 millions to the fighting force. They also had the highest casualty numbers, with around 27 million killed, 19 million of which were civilians. I am proud of Brazil's contribution, but we played a very small part in a very big war.

Let me preface this by saying that history is wrong here, India did a great service and should be recognized for it. The reason they aren't is because they were part of England at the time. Therefore, all of their efforts are attributed to England. If the US split in half today and half of it changed its name and the other half didn't, history books would still say that the US contributed and this new country would be left out. Again, not the right way to do things, but I can understand how it all worked out. What we need to do today is to alter the history books.

However, Angel believes this can change. “It would be nice to see a broader learning scope, from the establishment of the Anglo-Saxons in England to more modern events, like the early 2000s. When you compare that to sixty-second viral videos online sharing shocking historical facts the general public often doesn’t know, it’s easy to see why history gains traction on social media.”

Many South American Catholics carry their saints in parades EXACTLY the same way they carried their ancient god king's. And the Irish cross is just a pagan circle cross with a tail on it. Lots of people keep some of their pagan roots.

Your conspiracy theory makes no sense. Why would the "gLoBaLiStS" want to reduce the population? This would cause their own power to diminish and eventually disappear. You haven't thought this through, have you? Also, there is literally no proof that mRNA vaccines are dangerous in any way.

I remember reading about this. What happened was he was having acute dementia that required specialized round the clock care with employing Nurses. The Nursing wasn't covered. He was on Medicare and Medicare requires you to use your own assets for the cost of that as it isn't covered. Once you deplete your assets, Medicare kicks in. And his Nobel Prize medal was considered an asset, which means he had to sell it when his retirement savings were depleted. I recall that some dude bought it and returned it to his wife. Lederman was completely senile by that time.

Except, PLENTY of people in 1939 London opposed the blackout, to the point of routinely coming to punches with enforcers from the Air Raid Precautions Service. People protested in the streets and claimed that the blackout was making more damage than the actual war! Londoners also protested the Air Raid drills, and refused to practice reaching shelters. This was especially true in 1939 and before 7 Sept. 1940, when Londoners felt safe from the bombings: when the Luftwaffe diverted focus from air warfare to indiscriminate bombing, and London was hit hard, most of the opposition disappeared overnight.

They would have been charged and sent to prison, or shot for collaboration with the enemy and/or treason. A war and an dictatorship are two situations when it's not wise to argue with the government.

No, not really. The Blackout was enforced by the ARP, that was initially a volunteer corp and quickly gained a stiff opposition because the measures were a nuisance, and the bombs had not reached London yet. ARP volunteers were often mocked for being in civil service instead of in the Army, for using makeshift posts such as churches and pubs as base of operation, and the fact that Boy Scouts and other Youth organizations volunteered en masse brought a kind of stigma to the role early on. They only regained recognition later on during the Blitz when their role became more effective and the results more visible to the general public. The enforcement was more on a "social pressure" basis, and took firm action only against thieves, looters and people who profiteered from the bombings

If you do your homework, which I know folk don’t want to do, a huge amount of artefacts that are held by the British Museum were either sent there or willingly given to the British because they were at risk from various people who were hell bent on destroying them due to religious pressure. So yeah, there’s a lot of guilt (and rightfully so) but there’s a lot there that would’ve been destroyed without the British Museum.

That's why the Greeks murdered him. Diogenes predicted he would be eaten by dogs, so the Greeks intended to make that impossible. But then the weather went bad, the murderers went inside, and dogs came along and ate Diogenes. [..........] Diogenes was nicknamed "the dog", the Greek word kynikos. Or as we say in English, cynic. Diogenes taught cynicism, the questioning of everything, and not simply obeying authority.

Diogenes lived on the street, in a barrel, like a dog, because he noticed that dogs were happy and wanted to be like them. When Alexander first greeted him, his response was " Stand out of my light', meaning "get out of my way".

Hypatia (she was the librarian of Alexandria) is portrayed as a villian, not a protector and disseminator of knowledge. Aspasia, the woman who taught philosophy to Socrates, was written out of nearly all history. Lady Murasaki invented the novel, wrote the first one a thousand years ago. Mary Shelley wrote the first science fiction novel 75 years before HG Wells, but he is credited as "first". Etc. ad nauseum.

The Spanish branch of the Habsburg family died out due to, shall we say, close family relationships. There were loads of marriages between cousins and three uncle niece marriages. The last Spanish Hapsburgs were Charles and Margaret Theresa. Charles was known as "the hexed" and suffered from many different diseases. He confused everyone for continuing to live despite all the diseases and deformities he suffered from. Charles had the worst example of the famous Habsburg Jaw ever; he couldn't chew his food, close his mouth or speak without drooling. He eventually died in his thirties leaving no direct heir. His sister was married to her uncle/cousin, cuz apparently no-one had learned that this was a bad idea. She called her husband "Uncle" throughout their marriage at his request. Yes, he found a way to make a weird situation weirder. Eventually, Margaret Theresa died in childbirth.

I remember learning about Charles in school... felt sorry for him, must have been a horrible existence. I only remember learning about his deformities, though obviously it was broader than that! No idea what else he did in the world!

Some lines on my tree go back for 50+ generations. By 20 generations, you have 638976 direct ancestors, by 35 generations, 20,937,965,568 direct ancestors. You'll never identify them all!

In India at some holy places we have written and recorded history of many generations. When we go to Haridwar to submit the ashes of our dead ones to the holy river Ganga, we are assigned a "Panda" that caters specifically to our region. He will record details about you and your family. And from his records you can know about your family tree. And, mind you, their records are so accurate that the judicial courts also admit them as valid evidence. Marvellous job !! I was a teacher, my husband was a teacher, the 11th was not near as bad as the days after because the students had so many questions and it hurt to try and answer them. We had so many parents who thought it was our job to explain everything, or who didn't want to try so left it to us. So much loss, so heartbreaking.

Quite so, even more so if all your neighbours don't have either. Some people had (Egypt of course being the most famous example here), some people hadn't, some people tried sooner or later. Bamum (in Cameroon) worked on developing a script for their language at the turn of the 20th century.

That's BS. Beethoven wrote it for a woman, that's for sure. Who, we don't know. There are a bunch of possible candidates, with no less than two of them being accomplished singers and musicians, the other being Therese Malfatti that took lessons from Beethoven but was an expert piano player to whom the melody would have posed no challenge. Also, the version in question lacks the hard part. The melody starts easy because that's the part that stayed true to the original writing. The second part was rewritten multiple times, Beethoven was not happy about it and used his experience and evolution in taste to revise it multiple times. By the last writing, he was also totally deaf and in that period he put a lot of technicalities in the score to ensure his intentions were clear to the players. It was also a common type of construction in the Rondò to have alternating simple and difficult parts over a same musical theme.

Romanian is the most Latin-like language still in use. My rusty Romanian came to the rescue in Sicily years ago when I needed medicine for my infant son - the necessary words were similar enough for the pharmacist to know what I needed. (My Romanian has withered further since then, barely having used more than a few words in the last 30 years!)

I had to check online because I was curious, according to Wikipedia 'Many languages are spoken within the state, as its inhabitants come from many countries. Italian is the lingua franca of the Vatican and replaced Latin as the official language of the Synod of Bishops in 2014.[2] The Holy See, the entity with authority over the state (yet legally distinct), uses Latin as its official language and Italian as its main working language in administrative and diplomatic affairs.' https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Languages_of_Vatican_City#:~:text=Italian%20is%20the%20lingua%20franca,in%20administrative%20and%20diplomatic%20affairs.

My son had Latin in our new Lutheran high school. He was the 8th student of a population of 8and the 2nd of 2 seniors. The class did a play of Little Red Riding Hood. He played the grand mother, using one of my old flannel nightgown with his pants pulled up to his knees and his army boots. He has very hairy legs. All the words were in Latin.

There's a thing called "mutual intelligibility", e.g. how well you can grasp language A if you already speak language B. Mutual intelligibility between Italian and Latin is quite good, but AFAIK the most similar to Latin is Romanian. Spanish and Portuguese fares well, but less that French AFAIK.

Until the mid-1880s, women in the UK were banned from attending college. Many didn't even finish public education, only educated at home. Look up Mary King, Irish microscopist and author of five books. Her work with microscopes made the theory of germ disease possible. So much wasted potential.

In 1714, a Norwegian captain and an English captain had a 14-hour long ship-fight. Afterwards, both ships were severely damaged, and the Norwegian captain was running out of ammo. He sent an envoy to the English ship, asking if he could borrow some of their ammo. They said no.

The pyramids weren't built by slaves, that's an old myth that is very debunked by now. They were skilled craftsmen who got paid. Archeologists have found the villages where they lived, the records of their attendance at work, and a lot of other related artifacts.

You've obviously never seen books on museums in other countries, let alone visited. The museum in Cairo is one of the world's best. Meanwhile the yanks incompetently bombed the 1400 year old Monte Cassino abbey in Italy, despite knowing the nazis weren't in it. The nazis explicitly stayed out of the abbey so it wouldn't be attacked. And it was the yanks that intentionally attacked the museum in Baghdad in 2001 (and some yanks looting it), despite not being a military target, Saddam deliberately NOT using it as a shield.

And Prime Minister Mackenzie King called a special meeting of Cabinet on a Sunday evening, to approve the declaration of war. Given the timing, it seems unlikely that they would have heard of the attack on Canadian troops before declaring war in support of their US neighbours (unlike the UK, which did it after the attack on Commonwealth troops).

Many people boarded up their windows to avoid paying the tax. Once the tax was repealed, many houses couldn’t reopen the windows because they had been boarded up so long, they were considered “historical” and couldn’t change their appearance.
