If you love animals and want to work with them, there are tons of different career paths open to you. Just two impactful choices you can make are working as a veterinarian or vet pharmacist. That being said, these jobs come with lots of responsibilities and can be demanding and emotionally exhausting. So, being resilient, having a good sense of humor, and looking for opportunities to laugh really does make a difference.
Veterinary pharmacists are basically professionals who create, manage, and distribute medication meant for animals.
In short, vet pharmacists do a wide range of tasks. As Indeed explains, they consult veterinarians about pet medicine dosages and side effects, study dose and distribution regulatory directives, and supervise and train vet and pharmacist technicians.
What’s more, they develop new medication formulas and test them to ensure safety, track and manage medical inventory, and educate consumers about the proper disposal of medication.
My old gray cat was named Wintressia. I got her when I was 15 or 16 and sort of made up the name - I was into Dungeons and Dragons at that time and I got her in the winter, so I kinda just made a fantasy-sounding edit to the word "winter", lol. I pronounced her name "win-tress-ee-uh", but (understandably) the vet staff used to struggle with pronouncing it when getting called back into the room. So we just all started calling her "Win-Win" for short XD
Some of the most important skills for veterinary pharmacists to have are being organized, having good attention to detail, and being adaptable.
In other words, pharmacists must be able to organize their time in such a way that they can efficiently fill prescriptions and manage orders, take care of the inventory, and order new medications.
Yep, we have to say "pickup for Stilgar Carlson" at the Costco pharmacy when we pick up his Keppra XD (anti-seizure medication, also used in humans as well.) My ex and I were never married, so my dog-son took my last name, of course :p
“In the pharmacy setting, there can be many types of medications that look the same, so it's important that pharmacists use organizational skills to ensure they label and store them correctly,” Indeed points out.
Meanwhile, to do well in this career, you need to be detail-oriented. Your patients need to receive the correct medication and dosages, which is a significant responsibility.
My cat is named Tater-Tot. Named that because he has a Tater-Tot for a brain.
I am quite ashamed that the only time I have picked up cat meds at the human pharmacy, it was for Sundance Reynolds. Sounds so boring!
What’s more, safety is paramount, and you need to ensure that the medications you prescribe don’t conflict when taken together.
In terms of adaptability, pharmacists need to be able to react to new situations and adjust accordingly, Indeed stresses. This means staying calm under pressure, using your critical thinking skills, and quickly implementing solutions to problems.
My puppy is named Trixiebell Cindy Lou Who but she answers to Princess P00p-a-Loop. BP we are censoring p00p, now?
If you decide that being a vet pharmacist isn’t quite right for you and want to be a veterinarian instead, it’s essential that you don’t overly romanticize the career.
Yes, you’ll be working with lots of animals and making the world a better place. However, the job itself is incredibly demanding, emotionally draining, and can be a source of lots of tension. But vets might not always be the best at gauging what’s causing them the most stress.
My sister spent the better part of a month trying to get a scared stray beagle to trust her. He was malnourished and had to survive by eating whatever he could get. When she finally got him to trust her, she put him in her back yard. In the middle of the night he somehow got to my niece's pet rabbit. He ate everything but the head. Yes, she named the dog Dahmer.
For example, one recent study found that most veterinarians think that their biggest job-related burdens are bureaucracy, animal suffering, and communication with pet owners.
In reality, though, it’s financial concerns that have a much bigger negative impact on vets’ mental health than bureaucratic issues.
Other work-related challenges that vets face are emotional attachments, large workloads, burnout, client expectations, financial constraints, and ethical dilemmas.
What’s more, they also have to deal with legal and professional pressure, potential compassion fatigue, and issues arising from team dynamics.
That’s why vets need to prioritize self-care, emotional boundaries, and self-awareness consistently.
It is my husband’s considered opinion that one should pick a pet name you would not mind yelling as you wander around the neighborhood in the middle of the night.
Visits to the vet clinic can set you back a lot of money, but it all depends on where you live, the issue itself, and whether or not it’s an emergency.
As reported by Forbes, based on its analysis of cost data from Banfield Pet Hospital, the average cost of a vet visit is roughly $61. And yet, the cost can be significantly higher.
Getting your pet vaccinated might cost between $25 and $50, while a basic health exam might set you back between $50 and $250, Forbes explains.
Diagnostic tests can cost hundreds of dollars. Treating serious illnesses or dealing with an ingested object, however, can set you back thousands of dollars.
A visit to the emergency room might set you back around $125. Hospitalizing your pet can cost over $700. And advanced surgery or specialty care might cost a jaw-dropping sum of money: over $4,000.
“As a concerned pet parent, your pet’s health is a top priority, but at the same time, these expenses can burn your savings,” Forbes notes.
My pets have always had people names too and gotten their own mail. It always cracks me up.
Once you’ve finished reading through this list and upvoting your favorite pet names, we’d like to hear from you in the comments!
Which of these names did you love the most and why? How did you come up with your pets’ names? Have you ever considered a career working with animals, as a vet or vet pharmacist?
We took in a stray cat when I was a teenager. (I fed him after my mom told me not to, so he stuck around, LOL) He wouldn't come inside, so he ended up living in a dog house on our back porch for the rest of his life. I named him Freeloader but we called him Load for short. 😂 All our other pets had people names, so it was funny the first time we took him to the vet and heard them call out Freeloader Smith. (not my real last name) My mom turned to me and smirked "I think they're looking for you". 🤣🙄 Thanks mom!
I remember when my ex couldn't pick up Stilgar's meds because he didn't know Stilgar's birthdate XD Stilgar is our dog. I, of course, know all of my pet-childrens' birthdates XD
Yeah, I've never had a pet prescription that didn't have (feline) or (equine) after the animal's name. I thought that was a requirement.
Remember when your p0rn name was your dog's name plus the name of the street you lived on as a kid? Mine would have been Bubbles Jackson!
We also had a cat named Mouse when I was a kid. She was a Siamese with a kink in her tail. The breeder sold her to my mom for $25 (in the 70's) because she was "defective". 🙄 Her tail was straight until the very end where it turned at a 90 degree angle. We thought she was lovely. 🤷♀️
Since my boy passed, I miss getting to say 08-08-2008 to the pharmacist. If he could have held out another 6 months he would have been able to sign for himself lol
My cat’s names are: Chairman Meow, Margaret Scratcher, Winston Furchill, and George Pawshington.
I have a rooster caller Sir Cluckington, cats called Miss Gracie and Flickmeister, 3 dogs called Buddy, Orangeman and nooni, a white pony called ebony, an evil pony called bambi, an incredibly large wether called Dexter and a lovely ewe known as mother
We've had Pest, Useless, Nonsense, Miss Underfoot, Captain Underpants (my son's contribution), Getouttahere (AKA Gets) and Mr. Floofykins, among others. The vets always wanted to know what name we decided on.
My (now ex-) wife brought with her a cat named Coquette, which I thought was a great name. Another cat was named Cecil, because we found him in Cecil County, Maryland. I had a black cat named Isis; named after the cat in the (original) Star Trek episode Assignment: Earth. "That, Miss Lincoln, is simply my cat."
If I ever get a pet I believe I would name it Zaphod Beeblebrox. If I got two I would name one Zaphod and the other Bebblebrox.
A good friend had a dog named Ceefer and her cat was named Deefer. I think the chicken was named KF.
My cats are Minerva and Athena, the vet now calls out for the goddesses of war, whenever I take both of them in.
When I was a kid, we got a puppy and named her Lulu, after the "Little Lulu" comics. Since then, Lulu has played a big part in my email addresses and passwords, I had a cat named Lulu, and now have a dog named Louie.
My cats are Pickles and Nixie at home, but their full formal names are Picklebarrel Kumquat Chimicherrychanga and Onyxia Katrana Davel Prestor, respectively.
I have a name for the parrot I will never get: TJL Chicken. A warning to not misbehave. TJ for short.
Mine cat was Poopers. My last name is Mann. She was 17+ and on a lot of meds that I had to get from Walgreens I would get to hear "Poopers Mann" quite often. Walgreens put her name on my rewards card as "Poopers Cat," and since I need to call corporate to take it off, I haven't. The cashiers either give me a side eye and say nothing, or say "my name?
Thinking about my pets names over my life, I have to wonder ... W*F is wrong with me?!
I once had a Siamese cat we named Kitticachorn, because (1) that was the name of the current Prime Minister of Thailand, and (2) Isn't it a perfect name for a Kitty-cat?
My male cat's name is Spencer, and I love calling him PEZ DiSpencer. My female cat's name is Schatzi.
I had two with crazy names - BeanieMcBeanFace and Mumma B(my surname)'s Baby Boy Bugs......
We have a goldfish called Hotdog and the other is called Cutie Pie. The two stray cats that hang out at our house are called Pepsi and Cola. This is what happens when you let a 6 year old name pets.
We've always let a critters personality/antics/look help in the naming process so we've had some goofy critter names. Chicken Noodle, Noodle for short(grey Tabby Tomcat), Shadowboxer(Tomcat, longhaired void), Face(Tortie female), Sh!thead(White Tomcat). We had a beautiful red Longhorn cross cow named Murphy Brown, she was the loudest cow on the ranch. LOL
My black cat was adopted around the time Silvio Berlusconi made that unfortunate joke about Obama being "tanned" and at the shelter he was called Obama. I honestly didn't like the name very much but by then he responded at the name Obi, so he was transformed into a more dignified Obi Wan Kenobi for the next 15 years. He was an affectionate and very intelligent cat... and I miss him immensely!
On the Dutch reddit page we have person who called her cat 'Tosti' (Dutch version of grilled cheese sandwich) That person made a topic asking if her cat's name was strange, it started a chain reaction with hundreds of people reacting 'Tosti' in that thread. And now it keeps happening in random treads🤣, Someone answers with 'Tosti' and gets a chain reaction of people commenting with Tosti. Its so funny to watch, Makes me want to name my next cat Tosti🤭
My current pomeranian service dog is Lady Eowyn of Rohan, Eowyn for short. She also answers to Baby Girl.
My favourite rabbit was named Ted Bundy. The vets found it hysterical. My tortoise is Grace Shelly. Cat is Toki Wartooth. Skinny pig was Dr.Harold Shipmanbearpig...that one raised a few eyebrows!
I've always had odd names for my pets XD My childhood cats were Kaz and Wintressia, my beloved German Shepherd was Ember, and my current horde are all named after nerdy things/characters/things I like. There's Kohl (the mineral stibnite), Preacher (my favorite comic book series), the dogs Stilgar and Fenring (characters from my favorite book, Dune), the cats Rook and Lucanis (characters from the game Dragon Age), Riker (Star Trek: TNG), Joseph (after my childhood favorite musical), and Spicy (probably the only one who has a non-nerdy name!) XD
