Show me a person who says they have nothing to hide and I'll show you a liar. We all have something we don't want others to know about.
Of course, it's easier when that stuff is abstract, like a thought, because if it's physical we need a place for it.
Luckily, the subreddits r/secretcompartments and r/hiddenrooms have plenty of clever examples of these, let's say, solutions.
Keen Bored Panda readers might remember that we already have one piece published on the two online communities, but their members have been sharing so much cool content, we have to do another one.

Pantry
We have a similar one... Hilarious with new visitors, we disappear in the big kitchen cabinet. And exit the pantry through the hallway, then re entering the kitchen from the living room. Hilarious.
I wish more houses were built with kitchen pantries. There’s never enough cabinet space, and a pantry allows you to store any extra dry goods you buy when they’re on special. It also closes a door on pet food so our fuzzy four-legged friends can’t raid the kibble and treat containers.
My grandmother's two story, 4 column stately home in upstate New York had a door in the wall of the main bedroom closet. You went through it and were in the attic. You went left through a small room and into another room where there was a staircase. Down that staircase was the kitchen pantry. No matter how quiet we tried, Grandma always knew we were sneaking food and throw open the door. We'd all laugh and run back upstairs. Fond memories.
I wish I saw this earlier. My grandfather was a master carpenter, I've still got his blueprints for all the trim and furniture in Michigan's capital. Well he built my house and most of the built in bookcases have hidden hinges and open to hidden rooms in what's normally dead space in Cape Cod style homes. The basement has a built in bar with a trap door leading to a sub basement. My favorite stuff is like the fireplace has a trap door that goes to my utility room where there's a door in the brick for checking the ash and the built in laundry runs empty out into a cage on the ceiling.
I love that they went to the trouble to make those little insets at the bottom to make the illusion perfect!
Entryway With A Secret Underlying Kitty Entryway
Imagine a guest not knowing about this and seeing a cat just step through the door
Imagine teaching your cat that this is the only door with a cat flap and finding it unconscious by every other door 😲
Load More Replies...Imagine burglars just reaching through the kitty entry and opening the door you forgot to lock.
As there is no key hole or other locks like a deadbolt switch, this is clearly an inside door.

Looks like it probably swings both ways, since the movable section in the first shot looks recessed in the other direction at the bottom of the panel.
Load More Replies...For our last piece on these subreddits, my colleague Ieva contacted Jill Herro, owner of Secret Compartment Furniture, a company that focuses on creating handmade furniture that is not only beautiful on the outside, but also hides your possessions "in plain sight".
Her business was inspired by a personal need since Herro wanted to have a nice piece of furniture to store her valuables in. However, when she started looking, all that she found "looked like some guy's garage project—hardly anything I would want in my home."
"Then, 6 months later, I got laid off from my pharmaceutical sales job and figured if I was looking for nice furniture for that reason, there must be others doing the same," she told Bored Panda. "Since I live one hour north of the largest Amish community in the world with over 450 furniture makers, I figured I would give furniture design a try!"

I worked for a very eccentric woman who had all kinds of secret passages, rooms, false drawers, panic room, security room, full length mirrors that needed big magnets to open, even a secret bedroom behind another bookshelf; also a silver room for the 'good' stuff and furniture with little hidden places. I'm sure there were more that I didn't know about
Sounds like a woman with a very interesting story.

But on a more serious note, it just seemed logical to her that hiding your precious belongings in plain view is the way to go.
"Burglars know to grab the jewelry box, check the bedside drawer, check the dresser drawers, etc.," the furniture designer explained. Just imagine the confusion when your fine jewelry or money is not hidden there: "Their goal is to get in and out in less than 4 minutes. Hide those items in an unexpected place, and they will walk right past it."

Cool Night Stand
If this was my bedside table, I would never be able to get to the 'secret stash'. The top would be cluttered with coffee mugs, tea cups, books, dog treats, etc
So is mine LOL...!! But I noticed that it's not the top of the nightstand but the pulled out drawer that can be lifted up. All the stuff on top is safe..! :)

My friend rented a house for 14 years and got evicted. I went to help clean it out and I found a secret compartment in his master bedroom that was holding a safe. I called him to ask if he remembered to empty it and he thought I was joking. Had to send him pictures to convince him. I managed to open the safe... It was empty though 😞

"Every show I do I hear a story about someone being robbed, and 'they got the jewelry box, and I don't really care about most of it, but they got grandma's Tiffany necklace from the ‘30s, and it cannot be replaced...' Those stories break my heart. Put the costume jewelry in the jewelry box so they think they got something but put the good stuff in the coat rack!"

I think they could make a BP post on just this desk alone. There are multiple hidden compartments in this desk

If I need something, I don't want to have to fumble through hidden compartments and traps to get it. My only valuable is Bouche, and she'd figure out how to get in and out without my help. It's a beautiful desk, and the kid in me loves the secret compartments, but I'm just too damned old now.

I don't like the idea of walking on my table. It is a really neat design and it's not out of judgement, but out of my own preference. The things people step in and the thought of that on the tabletop. 😞
That's what tablecloths are for. Sorry, couldn't think of a grammatically correct way to say that.

Of course there's something there! Who will have a short hall that has a dead end?
The solutions people come up with to "outsmart" others are also entertaining to see. "I think people enjoy looking at those things because it is creative and surprising. It is unexpected. It shows time and effort," Jill Herro explained. "I take pride in the fact that my designs look totally 'normal'. Some of the other stuff available out there looks 'unbalanced' or out of proportion."

I Built This When I Got My Very First Chef's Knife
I need one. I once caught my youngest son using my Japanese dimpled chefs knife to cut a frozen pizza. He didn’t understand why I was upset. I told him it was the equivalent of me using his Xbox controller to hammer nails in the wall. I have a beautiful Chinese chefs knife I keep hidden or it probably would be used as a cleaver. This was not a part of adulthood I was prepared for.
I had one that fit all my knives from the home improvement store in 1984
One time, I spoke about keeping secrets with Dr. Michael Slepian, the Sanford C. Bernstein & Co. Associate Professor of Leadership and Ethics at Columbia Business School, spread out in between the pictures.
While Dr. Slepian thinks it's possible for people to live like an open book, sharing everything with the world, he wouldn't advise it.

What’s in the secret room behind it. Looks like a bedroom to me
"There is a class of secrets that most everyone agrees is okay to keep. People often call these 'white lies,'" he clarified.
"If you are just arriving at the party, and your friend asks you how their outfit looks, but it is too late to change, then most people agree that saying something positive is the kinder response ('You look great!'). If the truth needlessly hurts someone's feelings, holding back is often the more compassionate choice."
So I guess, if you need to tuck something away in a secret bookshelf or the far corners of your mind, go for it.

I want a workshop someday. I'm in a tiny 462 square foot apartment and I hate it. I don't really have anywhere to do large woodworking projects or other DIY projects that involve spreading out the items I need to use and making a mess with sawdust and creating a lot of noise. I have a friend that lives across town who lets me use her driveway, but that is an imposition and a hassle to load everything into my mom's car (I don't drive). I rarely miss living on a gulf island in rental homes but having the space and relative freedom to work on larger projects was a nice perk back then.

it's funny that they think people won't wonder why it projects off the wall for no reason.
You do realize they ALL do that, right? That's not a secret hideaway, that's why you don't just have a row of hooks.
My son made me one that is a large jewelry cabinet. Inside, there is a hidden nook that just looks like part of the cabinet, but when you put the right magnet in the right place and turn the decoration, the hiding place for my pain meds opens. We had a suspected drug thief in the family.
No offense, but *most* Americans don’t own guns. Less than 40% do. When one single nation has 350,000,000 counted people with actually closer to 4 million, it’s may be a loud minority reinforces a sensationalized stereotype. Why would you say this about to the US and not the deadliest nations??? I mean, I grew up learning the British interbred (not just their royals) and that was what was wrong with their ears & teeth. Gross to think how misled I were. The US is more vast than Europe (sans Russia) with a very large mix of ethnic identity. Making these negative statements about the US (especially in a context not remotely related to geopolitics) is nothing but a bitter excuse to bash them. There are now as many people in California alone as there is on the island of Great Britain. It seems ignorance is universal, but assuming most Americans have guns is an attempt to be debasing or cynical is just an ugly quality.

Re-did a house in the maritimes. Every closet had a false back that hid shelves which were used by rum runners back when. The next house, workers found a hidden hallway and a small sack of gold coins. All we found other than the shelves were a half dozen whale bone corsets stuffed in the walls.
Some were really hard to tell what the opening looks like based on the photo. The others were very clever
I used to have a closet with a fairly hidden panel that led to the attic. I kinda forgot about how sneaky it was until I used it while having someone over. We were watching Shadowlands, about C.S. Lewis who wrote The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, about a family of kids whose wardrobe leads to a magical world. The look on her face when I came back out was purely priceless. I'd've done it on purpose if I'd've thought about it.
I have a laundry chute that I love, that goes from the master bathroom upstairs to the hall outside the laundry room. You'd be surprised at what will slide down between 2 studs.
