It’s simple—do good, feel good. Doesn’t matter if you’re on the giving or the receiving end. Random acts of kindness can make anyone’s day better. For example, a genuine smile from a cashier or barista can sometimes seriously boost my morning mood. Almost every time, I’m tempted to extend that joy that I get to someone else. It’s like a wholesome virus with a leading symptom of smiling from ear to ear.

What’s most impressive is that they don’t have to be grand gestures. There’s a Japanese concept called Mono no aware. It’s about noticing and appreciating small moments that bring you joy. At the heart of the concept is the fleeting nature of life. If we only get a limited amount of time among people, why not use it to make others feel good?

We at Bored Panda have compiled this list that might be just the tonic for when you’re feeling down. Career coach Liz Taplin also provides some insight on how to be more mindful in our everyday lives. Start scrolling and tap that upside arrow below the ones you like!

Liz Taplin is a career coach and former teacher with 35 years of experience under her belt. She mostly helps teachers – past, present and future, but works with charitable and voluntary organizations as well. Bored Panda reached out to Liz to better understand the importance of acts of kindness, because, as she states on her professional page, “there is no greater privilege than serving others.

Can the reasons behind kind acts be selfish, geared toward self-satisfaction? It’s interesting to understand what drives our need to help others. “I believe kindness and wellbeing are both innate human capacities and that they feed each other,” says Liz. “It’s a chicken and egg question, though. We feel good so [we] do good things. We do good things so [we] feel good. It doesn’t matter which comes first!”

Whatever the reason, helping others is a two-way street. Neuroscientists have found that helping others positively affects our brain. It boosts the levels of the love hormone oxytocin and dopamine, a neurotransmitter that gives us the feeling of euphoria. The latter one causes what’s called “helper’s high”. But that’s not all.

Being nice to others also releases serotonin and endorphins. Serotonin acts similar to dopamine and causes the centers of pleasure to light up your brain. You want some of that high? Try volunteering at a local animal or homeless shelter, help your elderly neighbor with the lawn or shovel their snowy driveway. The good deeds don’t have to be impressive or go viral. Simple everyday favors should help you get that mood boost just as well.

Such good news this kid made it. However, having lost relatives and friends to this sh***y disease, I always feel bad when I hear someone "beating cancer" or that this person "is hero". It's not meant to be mean, I know, but it sounds like those who died didn't fight hard enough. This sounds unfair to me, personal will to survive is NOT enough to make it unfortunately.

“For me, a random act of kindness means helping someone from a place of love and humanity and is the ultimate gift we can both offer and receive,” adds Liz. “Gandhi taught that the best way to find yourself is in the service of others, so that’s one outcome for the ‘giver’. For the ‘receiver’, the value is not just the act of kindness itself but the fact that a stranger sees you and values you."

"And the impact spreads, like ripples in a pond – a person is likely to become a giver very soon after being on the receiving end.” She gives a simple everyday example: “A great experiment to see this in action is to let someone out in front of you in heavy traffic. Within a few minutes, they will do the same thing to another car.”

Performing acts of kindness is part of the art of enjoying the little things in life. Liz has a few suggestions on how you can practice this habit. “I have a post-it note on my desk that says ‘make someone happy’ as a reminder that if that’s the only thing I do each day then it’s been a good day,” she shares.

Don’t get discouraged if you feel incapable or are not sure where to begin. Liz reassures: “Engaging in random acts of kindness is a habit we can nurture. Getting started is easy, just do simple things like reaching for a product off the top shelf at the supermarket for someone.

When I was a girl, they came out with a ballerina baby doll. There was a button thing hidden in her tiara to manipulate her legs. I wanted one so badly. Mom took me shopping to buy one for my birthday. The store had tons of them, all black. I had never seen a black doll before. Mom said something about how she was sorry they didn't have any. By the time she finished, I had picked up a box and put it in the cart. Mom said I wouldn't want that, and she wasn't buying me a doll I wouldn't play with. I was very confused. She finally agreed to buy it, and I played with it quite often.

My BF Grew Up Incredibly Poor. When He Was A Child, He Wanted A Charizard Lunchbox – He Felt If He Had It At School, He’d Feel Normal, Like Everyone Else. I Found The Lunchbox On Ebay, 18 Years Later

My boyfriend and i were at Walmart recently, and he recounted a story to me from his childhood. He grew up incredibly poor, his mother being a single mom raising two kids on her own, his father abandoning them when he was very young. He and his mom would “window shop” at stores, just to pass the time and look at stuff they knew they couldn’t buy. When he was little, when pokemon was really big, Walmart had a Charizard lunch box. He thought it was the coolest thing; Charizard was his favorite pokemon, and how often did you see things with just Charizard? The lunchbox wasn’t necessarily expensive, but with the threat of no power or running water, it might has well have been a billion dollars. His mom put the lunchbox on layaway and said he’d get it for his birthday, but my boyfriend knew that it wasn’t going to happen and it was definitely more of a gesture. It was so much more than a lunchbox. He felt if he had this lunchbox at school, he’d feel normal, he’d feel like everyone else.

His birthday is in December, and after much eBay stalking I found the lunchbox he yearned for, 18 years ago. It was in amazing condition. This was the moment it really started to sink in. He cried for a LONG time. He finally got his lunchbox he could never have.

The benefits of kind acts are not only short-term. They can deepen already established connections or help you start new friendships. Even the simple act of helping a family member wash the dishes not only results in gratitude from the other person, it also qualifies as quality time, where you can tell each other about your day or share a funny story from work.

In a similar vein, volunteer work is a great place to make new friends. You can meet new people who are potentially interested in doing good deeds and maybe even form lifelong friendships.

Absolutely life affirming, At times it feels like we are struggling so much in our own lives that we can’t dedicate time to others in need, only focusing on family as we can’t turn our faces away from someone we see every day and love. But friends are family too, sometimes the best family. But they can be forgotten, become unrecognisable or just disappear in those times between seeing them. I wish for everyone a last chance with a solid mate when they hit the rocks. I wish I could have been that friend.

Tegan sophie, I agree with you. No one knows how hard some people struggle just to get through a day. Your last sentence makes me think you permanently lost a friend and for whatever reason, you couldn’t be there for them. I think we all do the best we can at the time, so please don’t be too hard on yourself. There is always a chance to say a kind word to someone new. It costs you nothing but can be priceless to them.

As a hospice nurse, a fellow nurse and I took Charles, who was terminally ill with ALS swimming at the YMCA pool. We lowered he and his wheelchair into the pool using a lift then carried him around in our arms. What a thrill.

A National Geographic reader shared a story of an unexpected picnic while solo traveling in Istanbul. While in a park, she was waved down by a local family and was offered to join them and eat a homegrown salad. “We didn’t share a language but we shared a meal, smiles, and kindness,” she says.

Interestingly, the effect of random acts of kindness to strangers can be surprising. Scientists suggest that most good-doers don’t expect to get a positive reaction. A 2023 study in the Journal of Experimental Psychology has found that we systematically undervalue the positive impact our good actions have on the recipients.

I lived on a farm and went hunting regularly, so I saw a lot of death that benefited us humans. My father taught me as a small kid to acknowledge the animal's involuntary sacrifice, which I continue with every meat meal. He also taught me to treat animals humanely and with respect.

At the cinema I'll stay seated until the end of the credits in appreciation. Not the same as writing to someone, I know, but it's a gesture. I am always in awe of how many people it takes to make a movie.

I do this as well - in appreciation but also, when I see a really fantastic movie, I use the credits to slowly come back down to earth. The rewards for this behaviour was that I was among the first to get to enjoy when movies started regularly adding post credits scenes! Side note, I make sure to bring my trash out when I leave so the cleaners don't have to wait on me, and if they've not yet got to my route when I leave, I grab anything else I see as I exit. I'm grateful to the staff at local theaters as well for running and maintaining one of my favourite places to be!

I did this for the Transit of Venus. My daughter had a Girl Scout meeting while it was happening, and I didn't want to miss it, so I set up my telescope outside of the school. You can't look at the Sun through a telescope, so I had it projecting on a piece of metal. A lot of people came by and took a look in awe. The whole Troop also came out and looked. At certain times, Saturn is so bright and close that even that amount of light pollution can't obscure it, especially with a decent telescope.

This can explain the doubtful thoughts preceding a good deed. In some cases, it’s the fear of being misunderstood. “What if me bringing donuts into the office will be misconstrued as sucking up to my superiors?”—asks that little judgy voice in our heads.

Other times, we’re worried about not getting the reaction we expect. “What if my coworkers don’t like the donuts and will hate me forever after this?” These thoughts are irrational and reflect our own insecurities more than predict the possibilities of what can truly happen.

However, it’s also possible to build up nice behavior in our heads to be this grand gesture that the recipient should greatly appreciate. But when they don’t react in ways we expect, we get disappointed and might swear off good deeds altogether.

The Japanese have many different concepts on the philosophy of living. Some of them have permeated popular culture globally, like the art of golden repair kintsugi. In the same category as the already mentioned Mono no aware can be ikigai.

This concept is about defining and following your purpose in life. Similar are also kaizen—striving to always improve—and wabi-sabi. The latter invites us to find beauty in the imperfections of life, resisting the urge to always strive for perfection.

As was mentioned in the beginning, in Mono no aware, one practices seeing merit in the fleetingness of our existence. One way people can work on this is by actively appreciating the little things that bring them happiness. But how do you do that, you ask? And what exactly are “the little things”?

I’ve held back the tears till this post but now the dam has broken. My neighbors’ son was rushed back to hospital in Rome last night. He had a heart transplant nearly 5 months ago, he was going so well. Then yesterday morning he didn’t have any feelings in his legs. This photo is true, there really are dogs at the hospital. ♥️🇮🇹

The first thing to do is not think of “the little things” as cliche. We as people can sometimes be too proud, consider ourselves too cool for simple things. Earnestness as a character trait can be looked down upon for being too “cringe”.

However, failure to see its virtue can be the cause of a great deal of stress and pressure. Getting the dream job, the dream house are nice goals, but they happen rarely and the excitement eventually wears off. In order to feel a bit happier every day, it’s better to think about the details, like getting into a freshly made bed. Just think of how good that feels!

Didn't know what Words with friends was. Google it. Looks like a version of scrabble to me. To all you young ones out their if you don't know what Scrabble is, it is a board game where you had tiles with letters on them and each tile had a numeric value and when you made a word you add up the numbers up to get your points. Certain squares you could double or I believe you could even triple your word score. After all the tiles or if no more tiles could be played who ever had the highest score won.

Simply put, German is a very complicated language and I don't blame anyone for taking their time to learn it - every time I try to explain something from the German language to my overseas friends it gets weird real quick. Also, most people here understand English so it's not like this man won't be understood. Very cool idea he had there, very heartwarming.

What word can sound more cliche than “mindfulness”? A term that truly encompasses everything and nothing at the same time. At first glance, at least. But if we were to explore the different strategies of mindfulness, they would really be about being present.

Actively choosing to notice your insignificant surroundings is a habit that can be taken for granted. Slow down a few times a day for a couple of minutes and try to smell the aroma of your coffee, hear the sounds from outside the window.

In some cases, this can even be considered meditation. Maybe it is, but it’s also your subconscious kickstarting the habit of appreciating the little things.

This brings a memory of my grandparents... a rougher way of doing things, but the care and concern was there still. We are on holidays out of town . Pa yells to my grandmother (who's name was Dulcie) "Biddy! You want an icecream!?" They were both hard of hearing by this stage. Makes me laugh. She was undeniably a sweet tooth.

Be good to service people, especially those in places you go often, like work or school. Learn their names, say hello when you see them, and just be all around nice to them. They may work behind the scenes, but they’re not invisible. They’re your fellow human beings and the places you go would be filthy stinking trash heaps if not for them, so they deserve a smile and a cheery hello from you. In other words, don’t be an arrogant self-centered a*****e.

This next tip is especially poignant in our current age of information. We’re bombarded with news, trends and visual stimuli constantly (really everything everywhere all at once, am I right? It’s a shame we haven’t yet evolved to have hot dogs for fingers, it could serve as a great point of focus during meditation).

Disconnecting from technology for some time during the day and going outside for a walk can help you stop rushing through life. Taking a walk doesn’t necessarily mean in nature. It’s possible to take a break in a bustling city too. Try to recharge from the chatter and laughter from other people.

While I would be pushing others out of the way to pet such a gorgeous dog, I know plenty of people with phobias and allergies that wouldn’t be so happy! Even my daughter, who doesn’t have a phobia but is very wary of dogs because they are mostly bigger than her, would be frightened if a dog came along without its owner holding it on a lead in an enclosed space.

While being kind to others, don’t forget to practice self-kindness. Don’t be too hard on yourself at work, give yourself some “me time”, maybe start journaling. The golden rule is to treat yourself like you would treat a good friend.

When you’ve done that, circle back to helping others. There are many initiatives you can join, like the Kickstart Kindness program. The Random Acts of Kindness Foundation has many suggestions of what you can do if you have no idea where to start.

Perhaps even some of the entries here in our list will inspire you to do some good deeds. It’s just like a certain up-and-coming indie artist sings: “Treat people with kindness.”

Just like our 4 legged family member! He was in a hallway as all the kennels were full. We took him home that same day. We were bitten, shed a lot of tears... But almost 3 years passed, also a lot of work, patience, and love, he's the worst best thing that ever happened to us. We love him to bits! And instead of shaking in a dark hallway, now he sleeps in our bed ♥️🐶

storytime: when I was in college, I went home to Michigan for winter break. We had a huge ice storm right before Christmas and everyone lost power. When we finally had power trucks come through our neighborhood, we noticed the license plates said they were from Missouri. I can't imagine getting the call that you have to drive across the country for work at that time of year, but these power line folks did it, along with scores more because so many people were out of power. We made some Christmas cookies and set it on their truck while they were out at lunch. So glad to see this picture and seeing us return the favor to some of the states who helped us in our time of need.

There were several farms over the years where I grew up that lost barns, livestock, and feed to fires. Everyone stopped what they were doing, including classes for many of the kids, to assist containing the fires, rounding up livestock, and making food. It didn't stop once the fires were out because there was still plenty to do until these families were on their feet again.

Every year, 4th of may, 20:00 to 20:02 (this how time is written here as everyday standard, no "military" thing). No planes, no trains, next to no traffic, at restaurants, ... . No enforcement, it is just done by everybody who is able to do so, and next to everybody arranges beforehand that it can be done. This moment at the Dam Square is one of the most impressive moments, such a mass of people being silent, little kids too.

??? I know that we generally have 1 minutes silence at 1100 on 11th of November, Remembrance Day, to commemorate the end of the First World War. ANZAC Day is up at dawn to go to the wreath laying. March after. Then two-up from lunch onwards.

It is. And the only way out of this inequality is to tax the rich more. Yes I'll probably get 20 downvotes and angry sentiments, but really, compare someone with 4 or 5 properties to their name and luxury cars, gross expenses, to someone who can barely feed and clothe their kids, let alone house them. It's not all based on effort, privilege is often multi generational, and this needs to be recognised and levelled out.

I went to an all girls Catholic high school. I didn't realize how many of the girls were from really poor families. Most of us were blue collar folks, and no one was rich. The girl who sat in front of me for four years was always dirty. One day, she was called to the office and came back with a shopping bag. Apparently, the sisters were making care bags of soap, shampoo, etc. for the really poor girls, and I only saw it because she put it on the floor near my bookbag.

I bet his kids and grandkids live far away and can’t visit as often as they’d like. So he gets to hear the sound of children playing in his pool, while he looks out for them—-which is the main thing here. He’s there, right by the pool, a responsible adult, to keep the kids from doing foolish things and to act quickly in the case of an accident.

    Friendship Finds A Way

    Friendship Finds A Way

Where there is a will there is a way. Calebs buddy Ike missed him very much, I went to the kids room earlier today and played with Ike for a bit, he asked how Caleb was doing and so did Caleb's other friend Casey. We said out goodbyes and I headed back to Caleb's room. Ike rolled over in his wheelchair and knocked on the door and wanted to come say hello. Caleb is on double doors and is unable to leave the room so I grabbed some rubber gloves and a controller and gave it to Ike outside the glass, now they are having a blast playing Call of Duty. Love seeing these guys smiling and just being kids.

My wife and I just celebrated our 37 wedding anniversary. I had to remind her because we both forget (not the anniversary date, but what day it is, Monday? February? Who knows?), but I set up my calendar to remind me (she is stuck in the fax-machine era). So she went out, got a great card that said something like "I don't know what I'd do without you" with a cute fold-up animation. The next day, I discovered it was a birthday card. We are looking for her glasses all over the house now.

I'm assuming this is Russia or a russian speaking country but my mom said that in Russia there are a lot of strays and her father would just take one home as his own. Same with cats. One dog was super loyal and protective of my grandfather and nearly bit my moms face off. She still has the little scar.

I did that once when I worked in haunted house. There was a little girl who was terrified so I ran ahead of her and told everyone not to do their usual scare routine when she came by. I was just like that as a kid, and I remember one time they stopped and turned the lights on for me so I could see that it was all just pretend. It really made an impression on me and I wanted to do the same for that girl. I grew up to LOVE haunted houses, so I guess it worked. :)

When my brother was alive, we had a management plan where we got discounted electricity because his machines had to be on all the time, and if there was a power outage a generator was sent to us straight away, for free. Thankfully we never needed it though. I can't imagine the stress if you don't have something in place!

It's usually for babies with a flat.spot or a skull deformity. In the 90's doctors realised that babies sleeping on their backs are significantly less likely to die from SIDS, but this also gives a higher chance of developing a flat spot if the baby isn't given enough tummy time when they are awake. But that is easily treated with physical therapy and a helmet, whereas SIDS is not.

Not in this case, but generally speaking, if medical procedures get better you see more people with some kind of medical condition jut because they didn't die like before the medical progress was made.

I was supposed to have a helmet when I was born, but my parents said no. The only downside now is that head bands don't sit on my head right

We hired a young Moroccan taxi driver for the day, when we got to the Casbah turned out he'd never been inside and his eyes got big and round when I said "there are very big birds in here" (French was neither of our first languages!) so took him in with us. He thoroughly enjoyed wandering around and playing hide and seek with my kids..

Too cute 😍 anyone else think that the kids have quite a resemblance to one another, at least in facial features?

I have to wonder if the police know that, if this was they were known for rather than corruption and racism, we would love them probably as much as we love firefighters.

I think there are a lot more good cops than there are bad. Unfortunately, the bad ones do so much harm that it makes it hard for the public to trust the others. In a way it's similar to the way women view guys they don't know: "Not all men, but any man." "Not all police officers, but any police officer."
