Netizen Asks: “What’s One Habit People Think Is Normal But You Find Secretly Disgusting?” Gets 33 Replies
Imagine this situation: you meet someone—whether it's a business meeting or a romantic date—and they spend 90% of the time on their smartphone. You try to start a conversation, you are eloquent and witty, like a hypothetical kid of Cicero and Mrs. Maisel—but it's all in vain...
You understand perfectly well that today, many people act this way, and that it has almost become a standard of human communication all over the world... but, damn, it's incredibly offensive! And it surely irritates you, even if you hide your irritation behind a polite smile. And so, our next selection is dedicated to human habits just like these.

Leaving church on Sunday mornings and then immediately behaving like the Antichrist to the wait staff at a restaurant.
Every restaurant worker will tell you, the Sunday after-church crowd are the worst human beings to ever set foot in a restaurant.
i went to mimi's cafe last sunday, was just about an hour away from LA, and we got there at around the same time as the after church groups were getting there, and my uncle jokingly asked me "ready to see some karens?"

They’re doing exactly what Jesus said not to do and they wonder why their claims of belief are questioned? That’s why and it truly upsets me that the rest of us who don’t want to act like that are judged like we would.
The fact that the need the teachings of a mythological book to have morals says it all.
Load More Replies...You think they are bad? Look at the US govt now. Fire people for no reason, take away rights and benefits that help the poor , elderly and sick then kneel down to pray about their "glorious deeds!"
Nothing secret about this. Anybody who is rude to people serving them deserves to be thrown out on their a**e.
That's always been the downside of going to confession. When they wipe out all your old sins, now you have room for more.
It's not limited to Catholics. Protestants can be just as hypocritical.

Watching tiktoks / videos out loud either in public or even when you’re just hanging out with 1-2 people 🥲 it drives me insane.
That's where having Black Sabbath, Marilyn Manson and NIN (Closer...specifically) comes in handy. Fight fire with fire.
I was just talking to someone asking if me getting terribly annoyed several people watch tiktoks/facetime on speaker in thr same time in a crowded bar that already has background music loud enough to make it impossible to have a conversation with the people you went out with is old lady behavior or just reasonable...
A lot of my coworkers think it’s ok to clip their nails at their desk. Now I live in fear of a finger nail landing in my coffee and I can’t stand the sound of nail clippers.
What? How is this even remotely normal. This should be an HR issue.
At my old job, a longtime employee was let go and when cleaning his office afterward we found that the top drawer of his desk contained years of nail clippings.
If you snag a nail you have to clip it immediately or it will cause damage or pain or both. But your actual nail clipping task (doing all 10 of them) should be done at home.
So take care of hangnails in the bathroom. It's not *that* urgent.
Load More Replies...Any time I broke or cracked a nail at work and had to cut or file it I did it over the trashcan under my desk.
I've only experienced this once and that guy did A LOT of culturally inappropriate s**t at his desk. Finger and toenails. He also ran his personal business from his desk all day and our useless management failed to notice. When he retired they did not replace his position and we were fine.
Or in public in general. I've seen people doing this on trains and public transport...
A couple of days ago, the user u/Wonderful_City9340 asked netizens a question in the AskReddit community: "What’s one habit people think is normal but you find secretly disgusting?" The thread went absolutely viral, gathering around 8.1K upvotes, and over 5.7K different comments.
As is usually the case in such situations, for some folks, certain habits other people have seem completely unacceptable, while at the same time, others don’t see anything reprehensible about them. However, that is precisely the beauty of the question...
Coughing/sneezing without covering their mouth. The amount of people that do this in the open with no shame DIGUST ME.
I had someone give a big ol' juicy sneeze all over a cart of DVDs at work. I wiped everything down as soon as she moved. And scrubbed the heck out of my hands.
During the pandemic I was walking behind a woman (masks were mandatory here) in a mall. She literally removed her mask from her face, sneezed into the open, and put it back on. Eeeew. I dodged, but probably got some particles. Luckily my own mask was secure.
When you’re at the cash register and the next person in line stands EXTREMELY close to you while you’re cashing out. I need space please!
I hated this even before covid. Now after covid it's infuriating. The other day I was shopping and a lady came so close to me her kids stroller got my leg. Excuse me?? There weren't even many people in the store, and no one behind her 🙄
I am assuming this is accounting for voluntary proximity and not because the person directly behind oneself is squished by other people behind that person.
Had this happen to me a couple of days ago at the hospital check in line. The lady behind me was way too damn close to me waiting in line. I hate this so much. Bring back 6ft please.
I hate this. Standing so close to me that you're nearly up my backside is not going to make me go any faster. What's worse is that i have hearing difficulties and can't hear anything that's behind me so I'm not always aware of it until they practically shove me out of the way. Personal space.
i like to walk back a little, as if im taking a step back to justify my purchase. throw a little arm stretch in there. it works, they often back up, or if it hit them with my arm i turn and say "oh sorry, you're too close"
Talking on cellphone in public while it’s on speaker. So annoying.
And then holding the phone up to your face whenever you talk (like in this picture). It makes absolutely no sense.
If it's a guy I get close and say in a loud voice. Come on mate, hurry up. These girls charge by the hour!!
I rely mostly on texting, but when I do get a call I can't ignore I genuinely can't hear anything if I put the phone up to my ear - there's a sweet spot of about 1mm where I hear a tiny voice, but if I move it a fraction I hear nothing at all. Genuinely don't know how people work these things.
How did this start? I don't want to hear you talk, let alone the person on the other end.
I hate when people talk on phone in public transport (I don't mean on speaker. AT ALL). It's not prohibited so ofc I don't try to stop them. I'm just sitting there annoyed that I have to listen to whatever they need to share with everyone around.
Just join the conversation! Speaker in the public means, they want all to join
So text. The rest of the world doesn't need to be privy to your conversations.
Load More Replies...The selection we present to you today contains many human habits—ranging from completely harmless at first glance to frankly strange and, well, ridiculous. For example, the very idea of keeping cash in your bra (which, by the way, was quite common about a hundred years ago), seems inappropriate today.
Some habits, despite their prevalence nowadays, look damn wrong from the point of view of unsanitary conditions. For example, clipping your nails at your work desk is pretty gross—at least in my book. Well, licking your finger in order to turn the page—especially if it’s a magazine or a newspaper—actually threatens the health of the person doing it. In fact, the likelihood of diarrhea increases dramatically, doesn't it?
Being on the phone while also trying to engage in conversation with another person.
This!!!! Right here drives ke crazy. For a while now when we meet with friends for dinner or even family, the phone goes in the middle of the table and the first to "cave" and pick it up, pays the bill unless of course it's emergency or our kids. Very unpopular decision but it has worked for us to do this. We also don't allow devices at the dinner table.
Here i disagree. Depends how you do it, i try to keep the phone away if i'm having a conversation, but if it's a group conversation and i mostly just listen in, i am good enough with multitasking to also glance over messages and only pitch in when needed. Also, people find it even ruder to ask them to stop a conversation if i have something urgent (even if not important, but time sensitive) to communicate. For example, i wont stop a conversation i was engaged in just because my mum is texting me to write her the address of a place she wants to go NOW because she doesnt know how to search in a conversation...
And then tell me: "Go on, I'm listening." Maybe, but you're also being rude.
I remember how rude I thought it was when you could tell the person on the phone was watching TV and not at all engaged in the conversation. I would just end the call normally cause I could tell by the third blank "uh huh" they were not hearing anything I said and totally absorbed in the TV. Just don't call or say you will call back later
Posting everymoment of their child's lives. Kid doesn't even have a chance to decide for themselves what part of their life is online vs offline.
I get this but also to add...just adults posting everything, it's a big security vulnerability.
Just got back from holiday and surprise....no pics on any social media. Yes, I took plenty of pics, but I don't feel the need to announce it.
Load More Replies...I don't. I feel like they are my memoriea and to share them with everyone takes that away. Also - remember when watching other people's home movies was the most boring thing ever? Pretty sure a lot of people still feel that way and I'm not putting my kid out there to be judged and criticized under fake likes
My nephew and his first wife had pics of their kids on Facebook and I would tell them to stop it's not safe. They didn't have anything set to private which doesn't matter because people can still post your stuff. I've never had Facebook or any of that other c**p, I have more important things to keep up with.
Not really normal per se, more a result of laziness, but Littering (here in the UK there's so much litter on the streets and main roadsides, it's absolutely awful)
Edit: spelling/grammar.
If you’re surprised, you have a falsely elevated concept of the real level of caring among human beings. Until litterers get jail time *and* we can usually catch them, it will continue to be far too common.
Load More Replies...This is in the US also. When you drive down road, you see trash everywhere.
I get so mad at the human trash that drives down my road. They throw so much trash it's got to be every 2-3 cars. Who does that? They will throw it right in my yard and I like to walk my dog but now there is broken glass everywhere. I try to pick it up myself but it seems to instigate it. One time someone threw a plastic bucket of papers at me while I was walking and it hit the ground like a gunshot and papers exploded around me everywhere. I still picked them up. I need to bring a giant trash bag and do it again cause there is SO MUCH out there. I live in rural Maryland there really is no excuse.
If I remember correctly, that gets about $1500 fine in my state at a minimum. https://2019-mde.maryland.gov/programs/land/RecyclingandOperationsprogram/Pages/Trashing-Litter-in-Maryland.aspx
I'm a Marylander and I didn't know this! I tried the link and it came up 'page not found'.
Load More Replies...I live in quite a, what can I say but posh town. The amount of litter is awful. Even when people are just a few feet away from a bin they still drop it on the floor.
"In fact, some of the habits described in this collection are simply due to cultural differences between people," says Maria Kryvosheeva, a psychologist and NLP coach, whom Bored Panda asked for a comment here. "For instance, in some cultures it is considered acceptable to wear street shoes at home, and in other cultures it’s a pure taboo. And people of another culture will consider this a blatant disgrace."
"Well, everything else—somewhere it’s a lack of proper upbringing, somewhere it is simply an acquired bad habit that is difficult to wean yourself off. And some do not consider it necessary to wean themselves off these habits at all, considering it something completely ordinary. In any case, the issue here, as I understand it, is solely that other people don’t like it."
I'd have a shiver run down my spine anytime I was working a cashier job and an older woman pulled out money from her bra to pay for something
Edit: spelling; also wtf didn't expect this many responses.
But younger women doing the same thing is acceptable? Because? Older women are unattractive? Grow up. (Edit to add I am an old woman and I am offended by them specifying old and am projecting my opinion of why they said this)
I think it is simply more common for older women than younger, especially representing the generational shift from paper money to plastic to touchless.

I'm sorry but, I would simply refuse to take that cash. Un-hygenic doesn't come close.
Ugh! I remember a woman handing me sweaty currency out of her bra to pay for her purchase! Mad dash to wash my hands after.
Also shoe/sock money and a kid pulled out money from inside his swim trunks one time. Why thank you!

You'll never convince the MAGA of that! Until it bites them in the a*s.
Load More Replies..."It also depends a lot on the upbringing a person received in their childhood. If something was considered normal in the family and has been passing before our eyes for years, then sooner or later we also begin to take it for granted. And we’re sometimes very surprised to learn that other people are embarrassed about it. And the older the habit, the more difficult it is to get rid of it," Maria concludes.
However, the perception of other people's habits and peculiarities is also a question of our own upbringing and our own culture. And if someone's behavior doesn’t directly bother us that much—no matter how outrageous we may think it is—perhaps we should simply refrain from loudly expressing this indignation? What do you think?
Apparently some people don’t wash after using the restroom when they’re at home. I don’t get that all, you’re still touching everything!
I don’t understand why somebody who is entirely capable of doing so would voluntarily choose not to wash their hands or use some other kind of cleanser on them using the bathroom. It’s just common sense to adhere to the practice of proper hygiene if one is entirely capable of doing so!
My mother was a damn nurse and I caught her doing that. Her heat went out and stayed here for a few days. When she came out of the bathroom right after flushing I raised hell with her. I told her that we were not eating any if the sandwich meat or anything else she brought because she was NOT going to make us sick. Every time she came out of the bathroom if we didn't hear the water in the sink either me or my kids told her to get her nasty butt back in there and wash her hands! It was a few years after she had retired so I don't know when she started doing that.
Disgusting. I also hate it when people don't have handwash in their bathrooms and kitchens.
Just after lockdown for corvid, I saw a guy at work use the toilet and then walk straight into the canteen without washing his hands. I confronted him and he didn't see what the problem was. He was on a short term contract and after I and others complained his contract was not renewed.
Chewing gum with your mouth open/smacking 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮.
Alao the people who take the gum out of their mouths and play with it before proceeding to shake your hand and touch EVERYTHING!!?!
Eeeeew I hate that and I hate when people crack the gum or make other noises with it 💀 but I hate mouth noises in general
My sisters used to put their gun on the side of their dinner plates to resume chewing after dinner. It was disgusting. It grossed me out but that could do no wrong and I was wrong for complaining about it
I was once sharing a bag of cheetos with a friend. Most of us know that after a bit, you get the cheeto dust on your fingers. I watched my friend suck the cheeto dust off of their fingers and then dip back into the bag. I was horrified. In an instance of sharing, the licking the cheeto dust off of your fingers signifies that you are done snacking. No more dipping into the bag. After they did that, I just gave them the bag. I was so disgusted.
I completely agree with OP. Once you lick the Cheeto dust off that's it.
Or have a damp rag to wipe your fingers on if you need that stuff off you, but you still want more.

Spitting at the sidewalk for no reason. I don't like seeing random puddles of saliva on every walk I have.
If for whatever reason if I have to spit in a public area, I try to do it where no one will walk. But I don't do that , that often.
I believe that spitting in public is considered to be the norm in some counties, sadly.
Licking their fingers to turn a page.
Or licking their fingers at the grocery store to open the plastic produce bags, and then touching all the produce.
That's just because you can see it 🙃. You've got a assume unpackaged food HAS been touched by someone with unsanitary hands.

People not washing their hands before they cook or eat.
I wash my hands obsessively when handling/preparing food and 95% of the time I'm only cooking for myself.
My mom's bad habit is to touch everything in the damn kitchen with dirty hands while she's cooking. You can tell she's been at it because there's junk on the handles of the fridge/oven/drawers/etc. Makes me crazy!
Yep. A friend of mine went for dinner at this guy's house and she ended up getting food poisoning because he used hand sanitiser rather than washing his hands. I do judge her for still eating the food.
Talking on the phone while sitting on a public toilet .
Always tempted to shout "He is taking a s**t" so the person on the other end knows.
I used to work in a call centre. Trust me, we know if you're using the toilet when you call us and it's not nice.
If the worry is cleanliness (as all these toilet ones are) why are you complaining? Your connection is limited to phone lines. Is it the associated sounds you're complaining about? If so, you're being way too particular. Just act as if there was a Chinese Wall. Google it, you'll find it fascinating.
I'm a medical scheduler and hear people in the bathroom a lot, either while they are going or the flush. Call us when you're done in the bathroom you nasty pigs. I wish I could hang up but all calls are recorded.
Bringing a donut to the stall and eating it while pooping, then exiting the stall with donut in hand and going back to work without washing hands.

Double parking. It's such a rampant problem in NYC, and it infuriates me to no end. Especially when there is room for the car to have pulled over to the curb just 1 or 2 car lengths ahead of where they have chosen to stop. It ties up traffic and creates a road hazard. And, it's just incredibly inconsiderate - which is the disgusting part. Honestly, how full of yourself do you have to be to just stop in the middle of traffic and think "yeah, this is alright". Yuck.
Boredpanda got so lazy they couldn't even be bothered to find a stock photo for this.
NYC is the only place I've ever experienced this. And once you get blocked in by a double parker you have no recourse other than to honk your horn repeatedly. I've wanted to just ram the car out of the way, but people I've been with have never let me do that. ;)
When people talk on the phone when making an order at a store.
I'd be too tempted to pull out my phone and act like their order was interrupting MY conversation. "Hold up, girl. This b*tch is acting like she needs something..."
People who let their dogs lick their face
As much as I love my dog I think this is very unhygienic and has become normalised to some people.
From the web... Yes, research suggests that children who grow up with dogs have better immune systems. Exposure to dogs, especially during infancy, may help prime a baby's immune system. Benefits Fewer allergies Children who are exposed to dogs early in life are less likely to develop allergies and asthma. Fewer infections Children who live with dogs are less likely to get colds, ear infections, and coughs. Shorter antibiotics Children who live with dogs may need a shorter course of antibiotics when they get sick. Eczema protection Children who live with dogs may be protected from developing eczema.
My dog is cleaner than 90% of the people I encounter everyday, so hell yes he can sleep on my bed and give me kisses. Half of you have made out with way dirtier human mouths in your lifetime, so don’t start with this bs please!
Not right after they've been enjoying their own nether regions. Why don't you get down there and lick that for them? It's the same degree of cleanliness. Guess you like dog feces on your face.
Load More Replies...I've never let any of my dogs do that. As my friend's doctor dad said, they use their tongues as toilet paper.
I don't let my dogs or cat lick my face. If they lick or OMG sneeze on my hands or arms in the bathroom I go to wash them.
Has become normalized? Seems to me like it's currently going away from being normalized.

Calling partner daddy (mommy as well but other people find it disgusting too).
To each their kink, not my thing but I'm sure it works for others.
If they're parents, it may be a habit they got into when talking in front of the kids. "Kiss daddy goodnight, darling!" But kind of creepy if they still do it when they go to bed.
Now my parents did this. It wasn't sexual at all. Me and my sister called each other "sister" and "brother," too. But this might be a Southern thing. (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.)

Touching the handle to the restroom exit door, when I exit I usually get a paper towel to avoid direct contact with it cause people like to use the restroom and not wash their hands.
I have a little bottle of hand sanitizer hanging from my pocketbook strap so I use it if I can't push the door open. I also NEVER use those hand dryers, they have more bacteria than a toilet.
I try to use my foot occasionally, but usually just use one finger to open the door.
Leaving the toilet open when you flush!! Absolutely rancid behavior, repulsive on all levels.
There been studies done where it proves that when you flush with the toilet sest open, you are splashing what you put in there in the air and in the bathroom. Do you want to be breathing in pee and poop partiicles in?
And in your home bathroom, many have their toothbrushes just sitting there on the counter. Then they don't close the lid and that aerosolization can go as far as 14 ft. Yeah, next time you brush your teeth, enjoy the urine and feces that comes along with it. CLOSE THE LID!

And guys, if you always put the lid down, you will always put the seat down.
Parents wiping their kids faces with spit.
If you don't have anything better at the moment, why not? When you have a baby your brain gets rewired to be much less grossed out by these things
I don't have a baby but I am not grossed out by this. Germs are definitely shared within families! I think tolerance for what nowadays is called unhygienic is going down. Sometimes it seems kind of extreme. Future generations living in a bubble?

Some people do massive sniffles or snorts in my office. Pretty frequently. It's the reason I wear headphones.
Burping. Obviously everyone burps but I know people who do it excessively and especially people who do it on purpose. It genuinely makes my stomach turn.
Some of us have actual conditions that cause us to burp a lot, sometimes very loudly. I had a friend who hated when I burped. She told me “at least do it with your mouth closed.” So I did. It was just as loud. She never said another word again because she finally got that I can’t help it.
Yes! I had spine surgery through the front of my neck and had little burps for a solid 3 months afterwards. Nothing I could do.

A lack of habit: not washing/cleaning their phone and phone case.
I spray my phone with sanitizer as soon as I get home from work.
To be realistic: while our phones are one of the dirtiest things we touch regularly, cleaning them often enough to make a real difference can border on constant. Generally speaking, if your immune system is more or less healthy, you probably don’t need to obsess over germs. Reasonable hygiene is usually just fine.
I wipe my phone down multiple times per day. Mainly because smudges start to bother me so I wipe it down with an alcohol based wipe.
Blowing out birthday candles. Congrats, now we all get a slice of your spit cake.
My friend's family waves the candles out with one of the birthday cards received
My family did this because my brothers were disabled and had no muscle control to blow them out, but it works to avoid germs too
Load More Replies...Honestly, I don't have a problem with this. If you have any contact with kids at all, you'll have germs from literally everything they've been near anyway. And who has birthday candles after the age of about 16 anyway?
As much as I hate to say it but my 6 yo grandson lives with me and I've gotten more colds in the past couple years than I've ever had.

omg same, burping makes me nauseous and people doing it so much in stream and/or videos (not even bothering to edit it out) is super annoying 😑
Wearing shoes in the house.
Meh, I don't mind either way. It's not part of my culture to take them off, but I will in other people's home if they do and some people will in mine.
"It's not a part of my culture to take them off"... Culture should have nothing to do with it! It should only be about hygiene........ You walked outside in those shoes, stepped in God knows what and are now taking it inside, all over the place! Why did we turn it into a culture thing?!

I think this might be a culture thing. I always wear shoes in my house and have no objection to others doing so.
I need the support of shoes on my feet. I have “inside” shoes and “outside” shoes, and I switch between them at the door.
I take mine off when I get home because I would rather be completely barefoot or have socks on during cold weather.
