It's been only a few weeks since Google introduced 'AI Overview' in its search engine, but the public criticism has already been overwhelming.

And rightfully so. On paper, the feature should present a quick summary of helpful answers to questions at the top of the page. For example, if someone wants to know how to tie a tie, they ought to receive a clear and concise step-by-step guide on the most popular knots.

But the reality is very different. Social media users have shared a huge variety of screenshots showing the AI tool giving funny, incorrect, and downright concerning responses.

Continue scrolling to check them out, and don't miss the conversation we had with Dr. Toby Walsh — you'll find it in between the pictures.

Hmm. Is there another fruit, small, purplish, has a pit that might end in um? Perhaps a plum? However I'm just a person, not an AI so I don't really know anything, but just to put that out there.

The problem arises because artificial intelligence has no clue what any text symbols mean. You can train it to generate words based on a given input, but it will not comprehend the meaning behind those words.

"Generative AI systems like Google's AI Overview or ChatGPT don't know what's true. They just repeat what they find frequently on the web," Toby Walsh, professor of AI at UNSW Sydney and author of 'Faking It! Artificial Intelligence in a Human World,' told Bored Panda.

These overviews are one of the most dramatic examples of the limitations behind today's AI technologies, which Elon Musk said will outsmart humans by 2026.

Walsh explained, "Obscure topics are likely to give generative AI the most difficulty. No one had said on the web not to eat rocks because it was so obviously a bad idea. But there was one satirical article from the Onion that did suggest you should because of their 'good' mineral content. Unfortunately, AI can't tell satire from truth."

Sherman's law says that if you don't know the answer to someone, post the wrong answer as a fact online, and someone will correct you. Whereas if you were to ask for the answer, you're far less likely to get a result. This is like the AI equivalent, I'm going to call it McCarthy's law, and it's that if you ask AI a question, and it doesn't have an answer, it will make up an answer rather than admit that doesn't know the answer.

You Intel from the way that it's worded, that the original site it was quoting said do not: and then had that list under it. The AI just saw a list on a page about treatment and assumed it was things to do instead of it's not to do.

Random fact about snake bites from an ER nurse. Most of the time when 2 people (friends, siblings, relations, etc.) come into the ER with rattlesnake bites - it is because the first one got bit, and the other thought they had to get a picture of the "type" of rattlesnake that bit their companion, so that they would get the "right" type of anti-venom. If it is a rattlesnake, no matter the type out here in the Mojave, it is the same anti-venom for all. No need for photographic proof.

Question, would a tourniquet really be a bad idea? I know it can cause issues if left on too long but would it not help to prevent the poison from spreading giving longer time to get to a hospital?

But comedy isn't what we use its search engine for. "It's a risky strategy for Google to roll something like this out," Professor Walsh added.

"We are used to trusting Google to give us correct search results. Google should never forget we're only one click away from finding a new search engine."

I don't know what thermal paste is, but I have a hunch that it's almost, but not quite, entirely unlike beans.

Some do say that. I would never try it myself. Thermal paste is used to connect the heat distribution plate of a CPU to a heat-removing device like a copper cooling radiator, water cooler, etc. In case you don't know. It's normally made of substances that (a) do not burn, and (b) transmit heat well, and (c) spread out evenly, coating and making good thermal contact with the surface of the heat distribution plate.

Yes, be careful to check which kind of ladies' fingers are needed for a dish, however a general guide is: savoury dish, use okra; sweet dish, use cake; cannibal dish, use the original article.
