Nobody gets surprised by jerk designs anymore. Those are everywhere, from face creams to cereal boxes, and the long time favorite offender—bags of chips, which are known for their conspiracy to sell air, ‘cause why wouldn't they throw just a tiny bit more inside?!

But believe it or not, the internet’s got a fair share of evidence that the very opposite of jerk design exists. In fact, there’s a whole subreddit dedicated to examples of “design that benefits the user at the expense of the company.”

You heard it right, sometimes brands and companies can truly come up with solutions that show they do care about the people who use them. And no, there's no irony there! So scroll down to see the best of anti-jerk designs spotted by eagle-eyed people who just had to share them online.

It would be nice to have this service in the men's restrooms as well. Some (homosexual) men would also need such help. He can give the "order" at the counter without the other person noticing.

Not just homosexuals. Women can be predators too so all guys should have access to this.

This is really interesting. As someone else said they should change the drink and it should be open to all genders.

They can have it open to both men and women by having different drinks for men and women (so men won't recognize the women's one and vice versa). However, for couples of the same gender, it doesn't work because they use the same restroom and will recognize the sign.

Remember everyone (guys and girls and all y’all) most ppl are good and will help you if you ask. If you feel unsafe, even if the bar doesn’t have a sign like this, ask for help. You are not a burden or bothering anyone. And everyone should let a friend know when you are going on a date with a stranger.

I think this is a great idea with the exception of having the bartender walk you to your car. If the creeper is really a bad person, they may be followed and both may get hurt. I say the last 2 would be best. Don't involve another unless you have a bouncer who carries a firearm. Sad that these are the days.

I wanted to download the font to put on my computer (I've never been diagnosed with any kind of reading problem, but...), so I looked up where to download the font from and the very first thing that Google found for me was the NIH study: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5934461/

To find out more about the subreddit community that collects and shares examples of good design, Bored Panda reached out to its moderator Dale. He explained that the subreddit was first created as an offshoot of another subreddit with a similar name.

“It was created for the purpose of celebrating the effort made by companies and organizations that are directly for the benefit of the consumer. Particularly those efforts that may be at their expense.” Meanwhile, the sub has grown fairly strictly along these lines ever since. Dale also said that the community members celebrate good design and environmentally friendly decisions made by these groups.

“This may include things like the ability to turn off ads for free on free apps. Or, articles or videos that include the answer to questions before the content (such as in the title) as a kind of anti-clickbait. Our sub icon Adam Neely is a YouTuber and a great example of this.”

My parents had a friend (this was the 50's) who was regularly hit in the head when he slept, by his wife. He was hit hard enough that rather than waking up immediately, he would pass out. She finally gave him a skull fracture, and that was the last straw. But he never called it "abuse". He'd just say that they'd had an argument.

I wish they had a gender category - but may the grouped that is under "sex"? Also, I get that this may be from a little while ago... Which would mean we wouldn't be where we are in our journey of normalizing all things gender and sexuality! Just a note; this sign was in my hometown. And I must confess, it did not work. There was usually a box truck getting stuck at least 2 times a month. Thankfully the bridge was redone/lifted for safety and the sign was no longer needed. When it was removed the sign was bent and scuffed up from being hit so much. lol

Parking garages often hang a bumper tube for this same purpose. My dad was driving a car with a wheelchair container on top and I was following him. He hit that tube going into the garage and paused, but he's a stubborn man and just continued into the garage until he wedged it into a spot so tightly that his wheel wells were pretty much touching his wheels. And he calls me "blond to the toes" (his way of calling me dumb).

So simple yet so damn clever! I have a lot of relatively low bridges near my home in the UK. The last time a bus got lost and ended up removing the top half of a double decker bus it took out a major train route to London for several days. Not to mention terrifying 70 school children.

I came up with a similar idea to tackle a low section of roof inside a bus station. The architects rejected it out of hand because they said, "if a double decker goes in there, hitting the warning sign would terrify passengers in the top deck. it is better to ban double deckers from this area of the bus station." Don't know why I didn't think of that for myself! Thank God for the wisdom of architects!

But how do you hang it on the wall? I see a problem here. Then you need to take the extra roll out and put it somewhere. The cardboard is there to ensure you can roll it because paper is to soft and gets stuck. It's a great idea though and I'm not trying to be negative.

Nashville news this morning. A woman received a delivery of dead baby chicks. She sells organic eggs and regularly buys a specific breed of chicks mail order from this one company, for decades. First time there was ever any problem.

I am not sure if it is a typo or if other countries use a comma. We are not used to saying bucks after writing something in cent format as bucks means dollars, as in the green paper. So I can see Becca's confusion, but because there was something to indicate it was a part not a whole, it is not really wrong.

OR don't sell baby turtles. They're cute when they're little, but they grow up like anything else and need a lot of space and special care/food etc... Then they are dumped outside or worse and cannot fend for themselves.

With shampoo you can just add a bit of water. For toothpaste or tubes of hand cream I just cut the tube in half and access the contents that way - surprising the amount that is in there.

I do too so did a look since I never thought to before! Found this: "Since noise is a trigger for both migraines and tension-type headaches, there is likely more than one mechanism involved. One study found that those who developed a headache from noise had an increase in their temporal pulse amplitude, which refers to distention or widening of a superficial blood vessel in the face. The distension of blood vessels surrounding the skull may activate trigeminal sensory nerve fibres. Nervous system hyperarousal likely plays a role too, as evidenced by the other symptoms (besides headaches) that occur with persistent and loud noise exposure." I do get trigeminal headaches anyway so probably explains mine. Thanks for making me think about it. Hope there is something interesting in it for you. 👍

It's not necessarily true though, those comparisons. Asphalt heats up because sunlight hits it directly. If it's cloudy (but still warm from warm winds coming from elsewhere), the asphalt does not heat up to those temps. That last tip is exactly what it's about. If it hurts your feetsies, it will hurt theirs. Don't get me wrong, don't go out during the mid day heat... But for other reasons.

My mother lit into a guy at local store! It was at least 95 degrees and this bozo had a pickup lined with metal diamond pattern. His poor dog was doing the Texas two step trying to save his paws. When the guy came out my mother called him over. She asked him to put his hand on the metal. When he wouldn't do it, my mother grabbed his hand and held it on the hot metal. The guy hollered at her-are you crazy? By this time there were at least 15 people around my mother. The poor dog was still trying desperately to get off the metal! One of the guys said if I were you I would put that poor dog in the cab of your truck and get out of here! He left!

I am always shocked at how many people walk their dogs at the hottest part of the day during summer in the UK. It shows you who are selfishly going out during a temperature that is good for them with no consideration for the animal walking bare foot on boiling hot tarmac with a fur coat on. Get up early and walk them before the sun is all the way up and walk them after sunset. Also, it's bad for doggos to walk on icy grounds as well as salt treated ground. The number of people I've had to educate on how the cold weather can cause severe damage to dogs paws is pretty shocking. They are ALWAYS surprised and usually say that they thought because their dogs paws were quite hard/dry it protected their feet against the cold. If you have to drive to a dog park it's advisable to carry pet safe wipes for when they get back to the car. Or when you get the dog home give their feet a rinse off and if you can afford it some pad moisturiser for them.

These woman who were victims even TOLD Tinder these men were dangerous, and Tinder did NOTHING. Seems to me like Tinder is trying to cover their own asses and trying to make up for their blatant LACK of safety protocol for their members.

Like it or not there is a point where an individual needs to take necessary precautions to protect themselves. Tinder is often used as a hookup site. There are self preservation rules every man and woman should follow. It’s not victim blaming to encourage common sense. It may not ELIMINATE crimes, but it will reduce them. Ignoring high risk behavior does little to reduce assaults. Predators are lazy, they will go after low hanging fruit whenever possible

Designs that we see on the top shelves at supermarkets or on the top line in our internet browser have changed beyond recognition in the past decades. Previously, they all served a lone purpose to sell, whatever it took. From bright colors to deceptive packaging, nothing used to be off limits.

But millennials are now driving brands to practice socially responsible and user-friendly design. Not only are they less likely to spend their hard-earned money on things they don’t really need to compare with previous generations, they also expect much more from the brand than the thing they’re buying.

It turns out that millennials prefer to do business with brands that have prosocial messages, ethical standards, and sustainable methods. Not only do they expect companies to be transparent in their manufacturing processes, they also deeply care about them being socially responsible.

This is partly because, in the past decade, the things we consume, buy, and wear have become silent messages we give out to people. Every brand label may speak volumes, and millennials are not risking putting on a jacket just because it’s cold outside when they know very well that it’s produced in sweat shops in third-world countries.

Anti Vax is a dangerous perspective to look from. I've had a lot of discussions with people who are anti-vax. During this pandemic alone I've read a lot about it and well, I think it's quiet hypocritical to say the least. At first they say 'I will not be vaccinated for a disease which is only lethal in about 0,5% of the cases. (Depends on the country you live in how the fatality rate is). But when they are talking about vaccines, they say vaccines are so dangerous, all the while less than the 0,5% cause some sort of medical problem. And sure as hell it doesn't cause autism. How dare they compare deadly diseases with autism. I'd rather be autistic than dead (and yes I have a lot of autism mannerisms.

Fall Guys developers did the coolest thing. For a time, they put all hackers/cheaters on an isolated server without them knowing. So they'd just be matched with other cheaters. And if everyone is cheating it's not fun anymore. And because they didn't know they were in "cheater jail", they didn't just create new accounts.

Room maiden in Europe are used to deal with this. The tags with brand name / composition of the fabric are always placed on the right side of the sheets and mainly on the bottom of the side. Maybe a rule like this exists in the US, but most of the time only professional workers are aware of it.

Consider that typical millennials and the following generations are much less susceptible to “traditional” marketing techniques, such as the television commercial and the billboard. It’s because their hectic lifestyles have taught them to value their time and choose wisely where to eat, what to wear, and how to spend their evening.

Moreover, surrounded by a capitalist boom in early childhood, millennials grew immune to obtrusive marketing, which is mainly self-interested. These days, they expect brands to be open and communicative about how they operate in the world and to seek incremental and positive social change.

Should have been sorted years ago, or just go back to all-paper stickers, the plastic ones have only got common in the last 15/20 years - as we've known the damage we're doing?

all tires/tyres have treadwear indicators. Its a line of raised rubber that runs perpindicular to the tread pattern. When the tread is worn evenly with the TWI, replace the tire. treadwear-...bc2e53.jpg treadwear-indicator-bar-4x4-603d381bc2e53.jpg

I'm still undecided on that. I mean, people are usually in a wheel chair because they lack some form of control over their lower body and most buttons are at a height that's accessible from a sitting height. And my favorite, what would you do in a building with 20 floors? I think it has more use for waiting staff with their hands full, or as the op said in a pandemic where you'd rather not touch anything with your hands to begin with.

I use a cane, so when I'm riding in an elevator, I just use the end of my cane handle to push the buttons with. Works like a charm and keeps my hands clean. Although I suspect kids love these foot buttons far better -- they love to push elevator buttons anyway, but to get to kick something on purpose? Fabulous!

The key term is “corporate social responsibility,” which, according to Forbes, embodies 4 major qualities that millennials look for in companies these days. First, they want companies to be actively invested in the betterment of society and the solution of social problems. Second, they want companies that prioritize “making an impact” on the world around them.

Third, they want companies to be open and honest about their efforts—and to be public about their pro-social initiatives. And lastly, millennials want companies to involve their customers in their good works. An opportunity to give back to people is something inherently millennial, and shows how every effort from the brand’s point of view really matters.

To sum it up, the bare minimum of a user-friendly package that doesn’t promise what it cannot give is no longer enough. As generations are changing, marketing trends are shifting simultaneously. The brands who’ll be the first to adapt will likely take the biggest piece of the new consumer loyalty cake.

To clarify - this is not a substitute for the bathroom sink! These aren't intended for brushing your teeth, washing your face, etc. This is just for washing your hands after you use the toilet. Every bathroom that has this type of toilet (i.e. almost every home bathroom in Japan) also has a separate sink for other uses.

I'm so confused by the comments. Do people touch thier crotch with hands so filthy that you will make the tank gross? 🤮 Also it's really not that hard to reach, they are all over Japan which has a huge elderly population and they don't seems to have a problem. If you need a bigger sink you just go next door to the bathroom (room with tub/changing area/washing machine, no toilet).

This prompts me to ask: How does the blind person know they are there? Most buildings you go into have sign written in English and Braille as to what that door is for etc. But how does a blind person know that sign is there?

    Annie Niemands

Good question! A number of different ways. You can ask people where you are first of all and if it's the right door. Sometimes you'll have specific directions and just memorize them "second building, glass door to the left". In areas with good gps coverege you can use a phone with talkback mode and it will tell you exactly what building you are in. For unfamiliar places that seem hard to find you can bring a friend to help you find the way if you're uncomfortable asking strangers. You'd be surprised how many blind people don't know braille but they live very normal lives regardless, you just have to figure it out like all things in life. That's not to say a lot of places and buildings could do more to help leveling the playing field and make it easier for the visually impaired.

In Canada it is, there is a nutrition facts table with calorie content, fats (good & bad), carbs, proteins, sodium & any other things (calcium & vitamins) found in that food. Everything has amounts & percentages (the % of a daily calorie intake of approx 2,000). It is required on all food packaging. It's even on water bottles.

My veterinary sister just shuddered. I hope I have misunderstood. Should use an appropriate pet shampoo. Rescue places use it to cut through oil in oil spills for oiled sea birds etc, not everyday rescue animals. Veterinarians also generally don’t recommend using Dawn for fleas because of skin-related issues. For example, if the pet already has irritation from having a number of fleas on the skin, and you’re putting Dawn on skin that’s already irritated, there is potential for it to worsen. Dawn is not the best shampoo product for pets with bacterial skin infections, and it’s not labeled for canine or feline use, instead you should opt for a product designed specifically for pets.

If they’re made of material that breaks down lightning fast in a landfill, this is great! However, they look like they’re made from plastic, and since not everyone will want one, they should instead be set up as an incentive thing instead; where you send in X number of box tops or something, and one will be sent to you, with no added shipping charges.

Except for an extra layer of plastic/recycling complications, I don't see the big point... Lifting it will tell you much the same info for most people, and kids can learn. Plastic ones (HDPE, easy to recycle, even at home with an oven) are also sufficiently transparent to already see the level.

    Steve R
    Community Member
4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Cardboard is porous. There's already plastic in these cartons. That's how the milk stays inside, instead of seeping out. That's why you use paper towels to wipe up spilt milk. Paper products have pores. And if plastic made the whole thing impossible to recycle, what do you think the opening is made of? That screw cap looks pretty plastic to me. A few seconds of thought before posting can really make a difference.

As I've said elsewhere, the packaging already had plastic in it, cardboard isn't waterproof. And the cap is clearly plastic, so cartons aren't "nice paper packaging" with or without the little window.

No, because the residu that's stuck on the label is a great place for bacteria to grow. Also, some ventilation can be required after opening to prevent molds to grow in water that evaporates from the product. This is of course after opening, when the product is exposed to the outside world (with all them bacteria and moldie thingemees in it). Before that, it has been pasturized or sterilized to prevent that from happening and the air most likely replaced with something like carbondioxide to slow growth of micro organisms.

The best way to keep sour cream and cottage cheese fresh is to store it upside down after opening. (put it on a small plate in case a bit of liquid comes out.) I learned this years ago and it works! I have eaten both well past their "use by" date with this method. Doubtful? Try it!

    Dynein

4 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Did you compare it with how long it lasts when storing it the normal way? E.g soured milk products should be naturally very long-lasting, as the sour environment reduces mold growth, and the harmless lactic acid bacteria in the product make it harder in general for other microorganisms to flourish. I store my yogurt the normal way - with the cover on, even - and have also eaten it long after opening it and well past the use-by date. A lot of milk products are just ways that make milk long - it should be no surprise when that's the case!

Yes, get rid of the damn foil! It just provides more surface area for nefarious organisms to grow. And if you're serious, smooth out the surface of the sour cream as much as you can to further reduce surface area.

Hi just to clear things up (pls do don’t downvote this). In China, we share a lot of the same last names. Whenever names are hidden for privacy reasons, it would be the firsts names, not the last names. Also, having the exact name is quite common as well. I remember a few years ago my library card stopped working. And guess what...someone had the exact first AND last name as me. My family changed the endings of my library card and I could borrow books again. Anyways, thanks for reading this and have a good day y’all!

I worked retail for years. This rack is a mess. They are supposed to be gung in size order, small in front. It is easier to do that with those little tags. But always double check. Some people try things on and put them back on the racks on the wrong hangers.

There's also one for opening with your foot. It has large metal teeth, so that you have enough traction when you step on it to pull the door open.

But cardboard is often not sufficient packing for a fragile item, and these things are quite loud when opened, potentially alerting store staff to theft. We definitely need less plastic in our lives, but sometimes its benefits outweigh its costs. In this case, the benefit is safety, as this is a package of 10 razor blades.

Fortunately foot dexterity can be built up, and toe dexterity as well. There's many benefits to it too! Never having to bend over to pick up smaller items from the floor while barefoot at home is a big one, especially if you leave clothes lying about.

AND if you do buy too much of one of those items, they have signs that say “this item can not be returned if purchased” like sanitary wipes and toilet paper and even some food items “milk and rice and flour”... There are reasons why nobody else does this. Yes, it's recyclable, but much, much more expensive to produce - that means it also uses more energy and therefore probably isn't much better for the environment. Furthermore, the inside is probably coated with some kind of plastic, since aluminium is toxic and generally not the best idea for long term storage of food without such a layer. "Refillable" is also a joke. If you put in anything slightly acidic, even the wrong kind of water might suffice sometimes, it will still dissolve the bottle over time. It's a gimmick, and a very expensive one.

Aluminium cans are 100 % recyclable and can be recycled indefinitely. In Finland 95 % of aluminium cans are recycled. Manufacturing a new can from recycled aluminium requires 5 % of energy required to process 'virgin' aluminium in to a can.

Walmart has this at the service desk as one of the revolving messages on the message board with extra information about various scams that grifters may be using. I was glad to see someone getting the word out. Someone got my MIL for almost $500 by having her send money via Western Union at her local store. (weird story about how a grandkid needed money for bail) They even gave her directions how to get there....so helpful of them...

I consider vaccines 100% effective. Either I don't get the disease or I get a milder version. Because of a few anti-vaxers, my son got a bad case of whooping cough. My doctor kept reminding me a worse case would have meant hospitalization. We don't hear enough about the vaccinated kids who get sick because an unvaccinated child is spreading something. I am not sure the anti-vaxers care. If their kid isn't autistic, they won. They all know someone who knows someone, whose child got autism from vaccines. They personally don't know the child or parent, but somebody does.Since most other children are vaccinated, they don't have anything to worry about. These people are incredibly self centered. Kinda like the anti-maskers

Or poor reading on your part. It's 187 children total, and I know that because it's on the sign. That means that approximately 96 children were otherwise healthy before contracting the flu and dying. I know that in the world of pandemic numbers, this may seem small, but it wasn't to their parents and it would be an enormous loss if it happened to us.

Amazon really is a horrible, exploitative company though. And they don’t just exploit their workers they exploit (and undercut) their vendors too. Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj has a good episode on it. Amazon Prime I hope has fewer exploited employees and is the only Amazon product or service I use.

Medical conditions related to obesity and type 2 diabetes are amongst the most common causes of death in the USA, almost two thirds of American adults are overweight or obese. I am not trying to "fat shame", I am a healthcare professional in the UK (Physiotherapist), and almost three quarters of the patients I see have an obesity or weight related medical condition. This is usually either heart disease, joint/mobility problems or complications due to type 2 diabetes.

In reality if your phone is on you are being tracked. This has been proven many times. And last year tracking software was installed on every smart phone and it can't be removed or turned off. Illegal? Yes. But just try doing something about it. Don't believe me? Just look, it's called COVID Tracker and it tracks everywhere you go so they know if you've been exposed to the common cold.

Vehicle usage data are routinely scanned and shared with the automobile's manufacturer. These data are used to predict maintenance cycles and to alert both driver and dealer of real and impending service needs.

Cars made after a certain date do track your every move but it takes a court order to obtain the information from the on board computer. Pretty much like a black box in aircraft. Some years ago a man was convicted of killing his wife after the court obtained his GPS info from the cars computer thus proving his alibi a lie. The car was exactly where her body was found at at the exact time as the estimated time of death.

K I owe this store huge they were so good to me, when every other store was a d**k. My fridge broke last Easter weekend (still hot weather here) during the highest level of lockdown, fridges were out of stock everywhere. I sent messages to all the retailers, some replied with "we can deliver in 8 weeks". Harvey Normas contacted me back, arranged for a delivery on Tuesday (two days later), and when the cheap model I ordered was on backorder they gave me a waaay better one as a substitute no charge. Went above and beyond. Feels cheesy saying it but they did me a solid and I'll always buy from them if cost permits

I have called. In DC there isn't enough bus parking. Buses sit on smaller streets, block traffic and wait. It is difficult to get their attention. One phone call and they are moving quickly. Big truck or bus cut me off, I call. Get in my way but legal driving, mumble bad words - no call. An 18 wheeler sounded the horn, then cut off the guy who wanted the street parking space I was backing into. The trucker even forced the man to back up! Then he waited until I was parked, honked hard and long at the guy, then quick honk and waved at me with a smile. Karma? I think truckers don't like poorly driven trucks or bullies. They are far less maneuverable. (If someone pulls into a street parking space as you are backing in, they can force you out. Slime ball move)
