Animals are much smarter than we give them credit for being. Aviatrix Beryl Markham had the 'brilliant idea of using her plane to spot elephant herds and radio hunters their exact location. That happened ONE time. The 2nd time, the huge lead elephant stuck its head in a bush so Markham couldn't tell whether it was a bull or a cow elephant. while she circled it, waiting to see if it was a bull with huge tusks, the rest of the herd quietly sneaked away. As soon as they were safe, the big elephant raised its head, showing Markham that it was only a cow, with tiny tusks. She not only knew that the plane was responsible for the earlier massacre, but knew also that the hunters were killing them for their ivory. How shaming! And yet, Markham was only amused.

During WW2, in North Africa, the British were due to move on from a port town, and the Americans were to move into that town after them. A British officer, not keen on Americans, would round up a truckload of local kids, take them to the outskirts, pay them a few pennies each, and teach them English phrases. This is awesome. PVP Online did a similar strip. His buddies changed his screen name to something like pink-snuggly-bear. He ended up keeping it for all the log entries across players saying something like "xXxMurderMaster69xXx was killed by pink-snuggly-bear".

This is the very definition of "non-place" as defined by Marc Augé in the late '90s, a fascinating concept. Those are not places where anyone *live*, people just pass through in anonymity, without meaningful interactions and without building social networks or memories. The lack of experiential constructs deprives the places of "historical sense", making them timeless (in a "temporally undetermined" sense, non as in "eternal"). It's a concept very well known in architecture, it is basically a mandatory reading.
