The Winning Photos From The GDT Nature Photographer Of The Year 2020 Have Been Announced And They’re Beautiful
The German Society for Nature Photography has just announced the winners of the Nature Photographer of the Year 2020 contest, and the shots are absolutely beautiful.
"Due to the coronavirus pandemic, voting was not carried out during the annual general meeting but was completed online for the first time ever in GDT's history with great participation by its members," the organization told Bored Panda in a statement.
Professional photographers competed in 7 categories: Birds, Mammals, Other Animals, Plants and Fungi, Landscapes, Nature's Studio, and the special category -- Water.

Winner, Other Animals. Danger In The Mud. Crocodile In A Drying Pool By Jens Cullmann
It looks like some sort of huge monster that’s about to break through the surface of the earth.
Um...it is. Have you ever seen a mature crocodile up close? Scary.

It ain't all fun & games, rainbows & unicorns, that's for sure... Nature ain't all "love and kindness" is it? But it's fascinating in it's savage beauty, if we can live long enough to appreciate it.
You mean Predator, that's where Arnie covered himself in mud to hide. Stallone did that in Rambo II.
Load More Replies..."A total of 5,046 stunning pictures was submitted to the photo contest. After a pre-jury procedure (Alexandra Wünsch, Torsten Bittner und Jon A. Juarez), it was the GDT members' turn to make their choices from the ten best photos in each of the seven categories."
The overall winner as well as category winners and runners-up with their beautiful photos received generous prizes by AC-Foto, GDT's partner for many years. The overall winner of the photography contest also received an Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III 12-40mm kit from the organization's premium partner, Olympus Europe.
Overall Winner, Mammals. A Hare's Dream By Peter Lindel
Gorgeous- I love the warm tones and soft focus. It really does remind you of a scene from Beatrix Potter.
This year, the overall winner is Peter Lindel from Dortmund, Germany, with his photo of a European hare. Lindel is passionate about wildlife photography, focusing on local as well as African fauna. The winning image belongs to a series taken in the north of Dortmund. "Compared to many international nature photography hotspots, this region has little to offer," GDT said. "[But] Peter Lindel [invested] a lot of time and blood, sweat, and tears working on this project on his doorstep. In these times, as everyone is urged to stay home, the generally classic subject of a hare gains special significance. It is also a beautiful statement for long-term exploration of a single species and region."
4th Place, Other Animals. Toad King By Kevin Prönnecke
3rd Place, Other Animals. School Of Mackerel, Cocos Island By Henry Jager
Indeed, it's Bigeye trevally (official name Caranx Sexfasciatus -- "six-striped Carribean fish")

This photograph is a reminder that human species is destroying our planet much faster than it's able to regenerate.

7th Place, Mammals. Close-Up By Dr. Siegmar Bergfeld
Photographers often plant cameras on known paths while they watch from nearby. The camera doesn't always make it out in one piece but if they're lucky, they can recover the memory card in one piece and get an amazing shot like this one.

Then get in touch with the photographer. Don't be put off by the fact that he is German and his site is in German, just write to him in English, I'm sure there's no problem. I do believe that all of the photographers on this list have their own site, Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. www.uwehasubek.de

"Now look directly at the two spirals. Your head begins to feel heavy. You are completely relaxed. Sleeeep. You are aware of nothing but my voice."
6th Place, Other Animals. Sunspider By Radomir Jakubowski
I had tarantulas as pets growing up. My mother was terrified of them so she made me stack Encyclopedias on top of the enclosures. One of them (Ozzy) would hang upside down beneath the books on the lid so every time she would verify they were still contained it always appeared he had escaped. I liked to think he was trolling her.

3rd Place, Mammals. Cut And Run! By Winfried Wisniewski
That leopard is in trouble. Warthogs are fast and vicious. They'll kill anything they get close to...and that includes animals that are a lot larger than they are.
Wild pig are. Warthogs, though, are not very large, and only tend to charge when cornered. I've literally walked through groups of them and they just scattered. I've also seen them charge and if you charge BACK at them, they stop and run away!
Load More Replies...Oops! The prey has back-up. I know you're hungry, kitty, but maybe this wasn't such a smart choice.
6th Place, Landscapes. Eyjafjallajökull Volcanic Eruption By Kerstin Langenberger
And we think we are the dominant player in this drama of life on Earth.
We are little flecks on the face of the planet, and it does not care one bit whether there are any humans on it or not

Spectacular photographs! I can no wait for the time until we can all go outside and explore the beauty of nature again.
I have a tree outside my bedroom window & have been watching it it bud & leaf out day to day. It's something I would not have done otherwise. But I'm definitely going to buy some film for my 35mm & take it with me on my next walk. I'm in a new city & seeing for the first time.
