At one point the Confederate flags used to represent "southern heritage " they have since been adopted by many neo nazi groups and racist extremists. People are still trying to say its southern pride but at this point it's like wearing a swastika and saying it's a Buddhist (I believe) peace symbol... the images now are both synonymous with racism

For anyone saying the ANV Battle Standard has ever been widely used as something other than a mark of racism, (1) it is not the Confederate flag, (2) it was not well-known outside its infantry during the Civil War, (3) it was not an emblem associated with the Confederacy in general until the 1930's when the KKK started using it under the rubrics of "southern pride" and "southern heritage" (4) it came to prominence in the 1950's when pro-segregationists, pushing back against the burgeoning civil rights movement, took on its mantel as an emblem of their movement. Hint: If your symbol of pride was first widely used by the KKK and segregationist as a symbol of pride, it's probably racist. Pro Tip: if you want a symbol of regional heritage, pick something that includes all residents of that region, say for instance a magnolia flower, pecan pie or BBQ.

Overgeneralization is evil. Taryn and others: NOT ALL southerners who celebrate being southerners are racist. This kind of thinking leads to illogical conclusions like being insulted by the thirteen colonies flag!

Confederate flags in the background. The confederate was the separatist group that caused the American civil war, because they wanted to keep slaves and the rest of the country didn’t. The flag basically is a symbol for the right to own slaves. It looks cool though, so some people try to make excuses to use it. Also blatantly racist people obviously still use it to show their racism / southernism / republicanism / conservativism

Racists pretend it isn't racist. No matter what, it's always racist pride. They'll say "Southern pride, States rights...blah, blah, b******t.". It's ALWAYS ONLY racism.

It’s not. People are just ignorant about Southern history apart from slavery, so they assume that every symbol of southern culture is racist.

Joonscrab, please do your own research. You'll see that the majority of people who see this as a racist symbol are far left SJW's. The USA national flag was flying over all kinds of racist things earlier in the 20th century but do these same people get mad at the American flag? No? It's because they're cherry picking their outrage and only apply these standards to "other" people. There's a word for that....
