If you work from home or in an office, it’s easy to forget that many workplaces can easily turn into death traps. Or they would be if some managers could get away with it. Fortunately, for workers, if not the company's bottom line, governmental organizations like OSHA exist to make sure employers at least try to keep their workers alive.

This online group is dedicated to finding examples of workplaces where an OSHA visit might do some good. So scroll through and be sure to upvote your favorites. If you want to continue to shock yourself with examples of workplace hazards, Bored Panda has got your back, so check out our other collections here and here

Not a new solution. This is how to get a tall truck under a low power line without being electrocuted. The forked stick is usually removed after the truck has passed, so I don't know why it's still there. Possibly it's been left as a truckers protest against power lines that dangle below the legal limit.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for the safety of American workers. In the EU, The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has a similar job, though with some significant differences. Firstly, the various nations in the EU maintain their own job inspection agencies that actually conduct the inspections and investigations of workplace safety concerns.

OSHA keeps a running tally of the most common workplace safety violations they have found every year in the United States. These include insufficient fall protection, poor respiratory protection, and bad ladder safety. While these statistics are taken from US workplaces, comparable job sites around the world are likely to have similar issues. As one can imagine, construction sites are some of the most hazardous, along with work involving chemicals.

While it might seem counterintuitive, OSHA actually isn’t responsible for checking the safety measures in mines and energy infrastructure, even though it’s pretty easy to imagine all these dangers present there. This is not a result of some gross oversight or aggressive deregulation, quite the opposite, the Federal government actually has separate agencies to check if, say, a mine is complying with health and safety rules. This helps OSHA employees focus on their specific competencies without needing a specialized education to work with mines and power lines.

IF (I repeat: IF!) there's a reason for the flame to go back beyond the nozzle (that big cylindry thing on the left), there are waaaaaaay bigger problems than the wooden edge. Until then, the part on the wood is absolutely cool (in the truest sense of words) and harmless. This post here is made by someone who has no f*cking clue what they're talking about.

Agreed. It would also take a lot of time for that log to catch fire. It's not really that easy to burn down a tree from the middle, and this here is the equivalent to a tree. That said - an unsupervised blowtorch is a really bad idea.

    Kabuki Kitsune

This one was covered on Reddit, and had a fire inspector chime in on it. So it turns out that since the zip tie is the only thing holding that door closed, given the overall tensile strength of the things, it wouldn't provide much resistance if someone hit that door at a full tilt due to a fire.

    View more comments

Many of the suggestions and regulations presented by safety inspection agencies seem like added costs for managers. New equipment, training, and other measures mean more spending, naturally. But safety experts argue that this is a misleading analysis. Worker compensation, fines, and loss of reputation are arguably worse than paying for some equipment, but human psychology tends to undervalue the chances of a disaster, so these precautions “feel” wasteful to upper management. This couldn’t be further from the truth.

Actually, if you get 2 spanners, put them side by side like crab claws (make sure the smaller side is facing outwards), put the two ends that are touching in the gap of the lock handle then squeeze them together, it'll rupture the lock and break it.

I saw two people, on two separate motorbikes, carrying a large, very long piece of glass between them in Vietnam. The motorbike riders had to travel at exactly the same speed so the dudes didn't drop the glass. Don't know what happened when they came to corners.

I saw similar panes being transported din Ho Chi Min City (Saigon). The most spectacular were 3 scooters in tandem carrying a palm tree roots and all. Have to know how to ride.

More often than not, workers will go through a near miss or two before something dangerous actually happens. Normally, this is celebrated, since nothing bad happened, but experts say that these situations are an excellent time to learn. Just because this time nothing bad happened, doesn’t mean that next time will be the same.

You're not supposed to jump in any elevator. You may accidentally trigger a safety shutdown mechanism and get stalled in the elevator shaft until the mechanic comes and does their thing to get it going again. This isn't a 'it's so fragile it's gonna break' situation. They probably had to put this sign up because a bunch of half-wits regularly use it and play stupid games.

RealityCheck: I doubt they are referencing single person incidents. Imagine groups of stupid teens and/or drunks who think it would be funny to scare others on board or scare/dare each other. One person is unlikely to do much. Three or five or more kids averaging several hundred pounds jumping at once could easily cause damage to the emergency braking system.

Often there can be a disconnect between the workers exposed to hazards and managers, since the managers are the ones actually capable of resolving the issue, while the workers are the ones most aware and affected by possible dangers. Companies need to ensure that all employees are able to report and detail hazards easily and without fear of repercussions.

Misleading image. That ladder is bending slightly, but it also looks like it's bending much more than it is, because the sides of the ladder bend in and then back out as you clmb upward. Confirm this by looking at the far side of the ladder, and see how it seems to bend far less.

If you look closely there is a strap in the middle. Hopefully though the anchor point is not that rather weak looking metal railing behind it.

It's a reference to the sword of Damocles, which I only know about from Beetlejuice but I read about it to answer this and apparently Dionysus offered Damocles the opportunity to see what it was like being king but along with the luxury, to represent all the pressure he hung a sword above him by a very thin string that could kill him at any moment

I'm the HSE tech where I work. We had someone run a forklift into a pallet rack one day. Didn't fall, but we had to replace the post. It's 40' tall, custom made by Steel King, and requires renting a crane to remove the old one and install the new one. I recommended while we wait for the new post, we get the Steel King pallet rack guards. Nope, too expensive. After about a month, new one is in and installed. That week it gets hit again. Evidently there was not enough money to do it right the first time but plenty to do it a second... with $12k in additional guards and a forklift driver who never was even written up.

All you have to do is get masking tape, put it on the back of the power board, mark where the sliding slot holes are with a permanent marker, take the tape off, put the tape where you want the power board to go, drill some pilot holes where the largest part of the holes are on the tape, drill some screws in, rip the tape off, then put the power board on that surface and slide it into the screws. It's really not that hard.

We see fun stuff like this all the time. Like when the forklift pierces a bag of product because the driver gauges the fork's positions wrong. Solution: tape it up, draw a line about 6 inches above the gash, and move the product above that line to a new tote one scoop at a time. This happens a surprisingly large number of times per month.

Presumably you were jumping into water though, not onto concrete like this person is accidentally planning to? :p

This is easier than erecting scaffolding that has to be blocked or taken back down (kids). What I want to know is, is he repairing that vertical crack?

My guess is that he is making that crack (cutting the bricks) which would raise a whole new list of concerns...

It has eveything to do with installation. Water looks for the easiest way to drain. We once lived in a house that if water went into the overflow drain the tub it would come out of the dining room light downstairs.

When I bought my townhouse, the electrical box was in a shed that was so termite-eaten, I could put my hand through one of the posts. Corrosion was caked all over all the electrical wirings. I told the real-estate agent, "before it rains, let's get the electrical company to turn the power off until I can get this replaced and brought indoors." It wasn't even legally mine yet, so I had to get the seller's permission. And I was sure I got a 2nd opinion on the inspections, which had not happened yet.

Heh that reminds me of the fuse box for our solar a week after it was "professionally" installed. I opened it, and a LOT of water came out. Turned out the water entered from the panels on the roof into the PVC pipe. In they fixed it, but man, it could've caused a serious problem.

This one ended up NOT being an OSHA violation. The guy is a hvac tech hired by the owner of that pizza place. Since the hvac tech is an owner/operator one man operation, OSHA regulations don't actually apply to him. Someone linked the actual OSHA guidelines that spell it out. Is it safe? Probably not, but it's still legal and OSHA won't touch it.

I remember an unlabeled bottle in the chemistry lab of my high school - legend was that it had been there longer than the school itself, and it sat on the shelf for decades. Nobody could remember what it was, and nobody dared to check. It was not disposed of, either, as nobody knew if it was some harmless test solution or if it had to be specially disposed of using hazard protocols. A teacher once told me "It could be destilled water for all I know. But I will NOT open the da?n thing!"

Tsk tsk. Proper labeling includes open date, initials of the person who opened it, and adjusted expiration date due to opening it. Since TC didn’t put the new expiration date, maybe everyone thinks it’s immortal.

A common situation with plenty of chemicals. A real miss not to show the label as that would explain more about possible riscs. From what I can see its a compound used in gelation. These are normally realtively harmless
