“Work Safety? What’s That?”: 40 Times Health And Safety Didn’t Even Make It To The Priority List, As Shared On “OSHA” Online Group (New Pics)
If you work from home or in an office, it’s easy to forget that many workplaces can easily turn into death traps. Or they would be if some managers could get away with it. Fortunately, for workers, if not the company's bottom line, governmental organizations like OSHA exist to make sure employers at least try to keep their workers alive.
This online group is dedicated to finding examples of workplaces where an OSHA visit might do some good. So scroll through and be sure to upvote your favorites. If you want to continue to shock yourself with examples of workplace hazards, Bored Panda has got your back, so check out our other collections here and here.

Load More Replies...Not a new solution. This is how to get a tall truck under a low power line without being electrocuted. The forked stick is usually removed after the truck has passed, so I don't know why it's still there. Possibly it's been left as a truckers protest against power lines that dangle below the legal limit.

I see nothing wrong here. He just added an extra cushion barrier in case something falls on his head.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is responsible for the safety of American workers. In the EU, The European Agency for Safety and Health at Work has a similar job, though with some significant differences. Firstly, the various nations in the EU maintain their own job inspection agencies that actually conduct the inspections and investigations of workplace safety concerns.
OSHA keeps a running tally of the most common workplace safety violations they have found every year in the United States. These include insufficient fall protection, poor respiratory protection, and bad ladder safety. While these statistics are taken from US workplaces, comparable job sites around the world are likely to have similar issues. As one can imagine, construction sites are some of the most hazardous, along with work involving chemicals.

Jeebus, a self shielding helmet costs like $35 these days. The glass automatically darkens after you strike the arc. Never strike an arc against naked eyes.
To any non Aussies this man us also known for pooing his pants at a maccas, going on holidays to Hawaii instead of staying in his country while it was burning down and just generally being a complete idiot.

Oh c**p! He is gonna be in massive pain. A friend has cancer behind and around his eye just from the initial spark when starting to weld, for years.

The arrow is facing the direction his soul will go in if he moves a few more steps
It isn't risky (in my real experience) until the driver moves to another spot (putting up edge board / construction) - driving over uneven frozen ground - with the fork (or bucket) extended - now that's hairy.
Putting the arrow so his spirit will know which way to go after he cracks his head open.
While it might seem counterintuitive, OSHA actually isn’t responsible for checking the safety measures in mines and energy infrastructure, even though it’s pretty easy to imagine all these dangers present there. This is not a result of some gross oversight or aggressive deregulation, quite the opposite, the Federal government actually has separate agencies to check if, say, a mine is complying with health and safety rules. This helps OSHA employees focus on their specific competencies without needing a specialized education to work with mines and power lines.

Load More Replies...IF (I repeat: IF!) there's a reason for the flame to go back beyond the nozzle (that big cylindry thing on the left), there are waaaaaaay bigger problems than the wooden edge. Until then, the part on the wood is absolutely cool (in the truest sense of words) and harmless. This post here is made by someone who has no f*cking clue what they're talking about.
Agreed. It would also take a lot of time for that log to catch fire. It's not really that easy to burn down a tree from the middle, and this here is the equivalent to a tree. That said - an unsupervised blowtorch is a really bad idea.

Load More Replies...At an old job our fire door was faulty and would set off the alarm if there was a breeze. Boss "fixed" it like this. Dude got demoted and transfered after it was reported to corporate
Was going to say this too. They locked the employees in to deter theft. The employees either burned alive or jumped to their deaths. Owners collected the insurance and disappeared from history. But don’t worry, your boss probably thinks a fire could never happen on his watch.
Load More Replies...Not much of a zip tie. I'm not even that big and I'd plow through that with a shoulder blow easy. More of an impotent insult to the staff really.
Reminds me of the 1991 Tyson chicken plant fire in NC. Fire exits were locked or obstructed to prevent theft. The owner served 4 years for 25 counts of involuntary manslaughter.
They are not blocking as much as barricading it. Maybe they don't think it's the same thing.
Load More Replies...This one was covered on Reddit, and had a fire inspector chime in on it. So it turns out that since the zip tie is the only thing holding that door closed, given the overall tensile strength of the things, it wouldn't provide much resistance if someone hit that door at a full tilt due to a fire.
Many of the suggestions and regulations presented by safety inspection agencies seem like added costs for managers. New equipment, training, and other measures mean more spending, naturally. But safety experts argue that this is a misleading analysis. Worker compensation, fines, and loss of reputation are arguably worse than paying for some equipment, but human psychology tends to undervalue the chances of a disaster, so these precautions “feel” wasteful to upper management. This couldn’t be further from the truth.
We're All Gonna Die
Safety guy at my old shop is needed here. The most chaotic neutral man I've ever met. He would have used a torch to cut a man shaped hole in that shield. His mentality on this kind of violation was if I remove the lock they could put it back. If i remove the hasp they could add another. If i remove the door they could put it back. If i destroyed the door they will probably get that I'm upset 😡 lol
I mean they didn't say you could use it. Just that you had to have one..

I saw two people, on two separate motorbikes, carrying a large, very long piece of glass between them in Vietnam. The motorbike riders had to travel at exactly the same speed so the dudes didn't drop the glass. Don't know what happened when they came to corners.
I saw similar panes being transported din Ho Chi Min City (Saigon). The most spectacular were 3 scooters in tandem carrying a palm tree roots and all. Have to know how to ride.

More often than not, workers will go through a near miss or two before something dangerous actually happens. Normally, this is celebrated, since nothing bad happened, but experts say that these situations are an excellent time to learn. Just because this time nothing bad happened, doesn’t mean that next time will be the same.

Found This In An Elevator After The Doors Closed
WOW, I'll take the stairs thank you. Any elevator that can be broken by a hop...
You're not supposed to jump in any elevator. You may accidentally trigger a safety shutdown mechanism and get stalled in the elevator shaft until the mechanic comes and does their thing to get it going again. This isn't a 'it's so fragile it's gonna break' situation. They probably had to put this sign up because a bunch of half-wits regularly use it and play stupid games.
Load More Replies...RealityCheck: I doubt they are referencing single person incidents. Imagine groups of stupid teens and/or drunks who think it would be funny to scare others on board or scare/dare each other. One person is unlikely to do much. Three or five or more kids averaging several hundred pounds jumping at once could easily cause damage to the emergency braking system.
So if the elevator malfunctions does the passenger then get accused of jumping and causing it? Unless there is a camera in there this is not worth the proverbial writing.
Just what I thought! Imagine the hearing in court... Defendant: "I swear, your Honor, I did not jump." - Prosecutor: "Do you have proof?"
Load More Replies...Well that would be discrimination against grasshoppers trying to get to their floor
Load More Replies...Often there can be a disconnect between the workers exposed to hazards and managers, since the managers are the ones actually capable of resolving the issue, while the workers are the ones most aware and affected by possible dangers. Companies need to ensure that all employees are able to report and detail hazards easily and without fear of repercussions.

100% safe.... 5 point contact to level the truck.... Good lord you guys are so nervous... He lifted the entire truck from the center outriggers... Yeah, I thought so, too. I still shiver just thinking about it but that's just my fear of ladders in general. (Not fear of hights. Just ladders)

That ladder looks like it’s struggling to stay upright. He’s gonna fall for sure.
Misleading image. That ladder is bending slightly, but it also looks like it's bending much more than it is, because the sides of the ladder bend in and then back out as you clmb upward. Confirm this by looking at the far side of the ladder, and see how it seems to bend far less.

The Ac Unit Of Damocles
Although it doesn't look very safe I would be willing to bet that someone secured it to the fence before digging this hole
It's a reference to the sword of Damocles, which I only know about from Beetlejuice but I read about it to answer this and apparently Dionysus offered Damocles the opportunity to see what it was like being king but along with the luxury, to represent all the pressure he hung a sword above him by a very thin string that could kill him at any moment

Load More Replies...Jesus...that's a pallet rack. Could be 10s of thousands of pounds on that.
I'm the HSE tech where I work. We had someone run a forklift into a pallet rack one day. Didn't fall, but we had to replace the post. It's 40' tall, custom made by Steel King, and requires renting a crane to remove the old one and install the new one. I recommended while we wait for the new post, we get the Steel King pallet rack guards. Nope, too expensive. After about a month, new one is in and installed. That week it gets hit again. Evidently there was not enough money to do it right the first time but plenty to do it a second... with $12k in additional guards and a forklift driver who never was even written up.

Holes Drilled To Mount A Power Bar To The Wall
Reminds me of the time a roommate stapled the network cable to the floor to make it less of a tripping hazard.
To be honest that is actually how sparkies do it under houses. Just got to make sure you don't do it to tight
Load More Replies...Do they not realise that those keyhole shaped holes *are* for mounting to a wall?
And that by drilling holes & mounting screws to the FRONT of the power bar - it will be mounted backwards & they won't be able to plug anything in? MORONS 🤣🤣🤣
Load More Replies...All you have to do is get masking tape, put it on the back of the power board, mark where the sliding slot holes are with a permanent marker, take the tape off, put the tape where you want the power board to go, drill some pilot holes where the largest part of the holes are on the tape, drill some screws in, rip the tape off, then put the power board on that surface and slide it into the screws. It's really not that hard.
that only works with two sided tape if the holes are asymmetrical
Load More Replies...The absurd part is that if you can see it has holes built into the back of it precisely for hanging it.
Defeating the purpose of a surge protector. Electrical fires can burn and spread silently in the walls until suddenly the building is engulfed.
The screws are in plastic tubes that run from front to back, so quick safe and strong attachment. Smart actually
Thats Gonna Be Fun To Take Down
Seen that one before. Call the whole crew and re-palletize the whole pallet.
I can't imagine that this is the first time that's happened with the structure that they have...
What I’ve learned from this thread is that pallets are extremely unsafe
Is it just me or does the pallet on the left look like it has developed a nice bow in the middle as well?
If it's available, you can always use a Clamp forklift. Worked in a factory where this happened way too often.
We see fun stuff like this all the time. Like when the forklift pierces a bag of product because the driver gauges the fork's positions wrong. Solution: tape it up, draw a line about 6 inches above the gash, and move the product above that line to a new tote one scoop at a time. This happens a surprisingly large number of times per month.
That's not actually that bad, move the forks close and lift up the back. Then another fork lift to pick it up and move it
Just Slap Some Tape On It
Judging by the remnants of tape elsewhere, it's not the first time they've used this method either.
Load More Replies...If it moves and it shouldn't - DUCT TAPE If it doesn't move and it should - WD-40 If it rattles and falls off - FENCE WIRE

It's Perfectly Level, See?
This makes no sense to me. The doors are against the loading dock. You can't open them. What kind of cargo needs to be kept perfectly level? So many questions.
Maybe one of those top of the line, latest invention containers whith doors that open to inside of the container ? (for those not familiar with shipping containers : this is a joke...)
Load More Replies...This makes me cringe. You can't put anything in them, you can't drive off with them and you can't move them without a crane. What's the point?
Maybe the doors are accessible as the raised loading dock ends somewhere around where the black and yellow stripes end and/or where those tall pillars are.
The doors are against the loading dock for security reasons. Can't be easily opened by thieves
This can't be real. I can't believe their insurance company would allow this gaping liability.
Where are the wheels to keep them up? There is no support or am I blind?

This is easier than erecting scaffolding that has to be blocked or taken back down (kids). What I want to know is, is he repairing that vertical crack?
My guess is that he is making that crack (cutting the bricks) which would raise a whole new list of concerns...

When I bought my townhouse, the electrical box was in a shed that was so termite-eaten, I could put my hand through one of the posts. Corrosion was caked all over all the electrical wirings. I told the real-estate agent, "before it rains, let's get the electrical company to turn the power off until I can get this replaced and brought indoors." It wasn't even legally mine yet, so I had to get the seller's permission. And I was sure I got a 2nd opinion on the inspections, which had not happened yet.
Yes. If you want to find out if there is any electricity, just add water.
Heh that reminds me of the fuse box for our solar a week after it was "professionally" installed. I opened it, and a LOT of water came out. Turned out the water entered from the panels on the roof into the PVC pipe. In they fixed it, but man, it could've caused a serious problem.

I Was On The Edge Of My Seat Watching This Guy
There is a cat and edge joke in there somewhere but it's too early for me.
This one ended up NOT being an OSHA violation. The guy is a hvac tech hired by the owner of that pizza place. Since the hvac tech is an owner/operator one man operation, OSHA regulations don't actually apply to him. Someone linked the actual OSHA guidelines that spell it out. Is it safe? Probably not, but it's still legal and OSHA won't touch it.
If any of these incidences prove anything, ladders are a lot more complicated for people than I would've imagined.
I couldn't watch this guy from afar, I'd be more inclined to go hold the ladder for him.
I'm guessing that it isn't enough space to do that, but what do I know?

This Reagent Bottle Was Opened Before I Was Born
I remember an unlabeled bottle in the chemistry lab of my high school - legend was that it had been there longer than the school itself, and it sat on the shelf for decades. Nobody could remember what it was, and nobody dared to check. It was not disposed of, either, as nobody knew if it was some harmless test solution or if it had to be specially disposed of using hazard protocols.
