They're not immigrants though. An immigrant has the intention of staying permanently, while an expat is only there for work and usually for a fixed time frame depending on that employment.

This! An expat is sent on a short term stint and will return to their home country. An immigrant chooses to stay. Stop normalizing white people as expats and brown and yellow people as immigrants.

There's a difference between immigrants and expatriates. Expatriates retain their citizenship, so they pay taxes to the US and vote in elections of their US address.

I live and work outside my 'home' country (although certainly not in a 'poor' one), but I'd always fight against the 'expat' label. Those who are here temporarily with the intention of going home to live at some point, even if it's only when they retire, are definitely expats, and that has some negative connotations, whereas those who have no intention of ever returning to their native shores are not, by my definition. If you want to call us immigrants then that's fine, but within Western Europe that term is really used mainly to refer to those from outside Western Europe. No label is really needed for the rest of us.

Expat is usually a person, mostly someone who is sent into another country to take a (temporary) position in a branch of the company in that country. Think turbine manufacturer from the US in Chile, for example. And it doesn't matter if the country is poor or not - they are sent there from their work to do work in a sister-company. That, or they're brits living in Spain 😉

If the "expats" you are talking abou are from your own country, You would have to call them emmigrants, though.

And stop trying to normalize the extreme WFH cases where people work a remote job in a 1st world country but *live* in a 3rd world one. It's profiting off of economic differences when they don't contribute anything to the society (no taxes, no work products) except paying what's peanuts to them to live like kings :/ People should be required to live within a minimum distance of their job OR be payed the standard wages for their place of living. In *theory* working a remote job from anywhere sounds like a dream, but cost of living just varies too extremely between places for it to be actually fair.

Yeah I pass these people on my way to work everyday. There's even a cop in the lot because it gets backed up on the highway. Makes no sense

I know! All those parents with their engines idling for sometimes 30 minutes! I can't believe they don't turn their cars off. I always do, and it never gets too hot or cold. Deal with it.

Pretty sure this is not an office workspace but a *library* and the woman is simply a patron. So it's even less of an issue and in fact should be a no-brainer - I mean, what's the alternative, parents needing child care even for stuff they do in their leisure time?
