Many people, including us, have what we think is a rather peculiar relationship with technology. Household appliances sometimes feel like they have a life of their own. And you have to know how to coax them to do what they were built for. We find microwaves, in particular, to be extremely temperamental! And we’re not alone.
Bored Panda has compiled a list of the unluckiest and most painful microwave heating fails from around the net. Scroll down, upvote the pics that made you cringe the hardest, and remember to always, always treat tech with respect and to put your safety first.

My Microwave Just Called Me A Child For Hitting On Its Top For 4 Times Because The Timer Was All Screwed Up
Mine does the same thing when I accidentally press buttons out of order. It assumes I’m a little kid playing with the buttons and will not turn on unless the “Clear” button is pushed twice (or it’s unplugged and then plugged back in).
I want to see if mine will do this, but I won't pound on it so I guess I am stuck forever wondering.
I have the same microwave, only in black. I must now go and hit the top a few times so I can be called a child. 😁😂
My Dad Told Me To Put A CD In The Microwave
We used to cook piles of those free AOL cds like that. One year we decorated the Christmas tree with them.
It looks ancient and magical, like it may open a portal to something fantastic!
But does it still play music? Or is it for converting DVD to Blu-ray?
Load More Replies...PSA: do not try this at home. We did this in the 90s and my friend's microwave had burn marks and there would have been a fire if we hadn't stopped it. We did a few okay, so no idea what the difference was (maybe the label on the other side), but it's not worth doing unless you're 16 and your parents don't supervise you... Wait, did I say that last part out loud? I mean it's not worth doing, end of story.
Ever Wondered What Happens When You Microwave A Frozen Uncooked Croissant? Wonder No More
That's a movie prop hack there. Shows like Star Trek often showing alien food which I reckon many times they went to effort to create. A plate full of these would be easy / cheap and they could sell it with the wording. Made from the swim bladder of the Gardovian Jump Fish or some such baloney.
Croissant or pancreas?! Ooooh! I just invented a new game! You figure out the details.
I was gonna say a very wrinkly dumpling, but I think your answer makes more sense.
Load More Replies...Well, I once tried to make fries in the mikrowave because I realized too late that I didn't have an oven
Load More Replies...If you ever wonder whether or not you can safely microwave something, it’s really not a sign of weakness to take the time to do some honest research. Sure, you might be hungry, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially where home appliances are concerned. The last thing you want is to start an electrical fire at home because you wanted some popcorn.
If you don’t happen to have your microwave oven’s manual, it’s best to do some Googling. Don’t just rely on half-remembered myths about what is and isn’t safe to pop in the oven. One thing that you definitely don’t want to microwave is aluminum foil. It burns and ignites and can be incredibly dangerous. So, first off, avoid placing aluminum or any other metal inside the appliance. That means no forks in plates of takeaway and no spoons in mugs either!
This Happened When I Put Cream In The Microwave
HOW? Splatter I get. The cup jumping up and sticking to the ceiling I don't get.
I would also like to know how this happened. Looks like some kind of trick or something.
Load More Replies...Must have been 'light' cream. 'Heavy' cream would have blown a hole in the bottom of the microwave.

Tried To Make A Mug Cake. One Minute Later My Microwave Birthed This Monstrosity
Microwave mug cakes can be amazing! Pro tips: the amount of cake mixture you make using one egg is far more than you can fit in one mug. The mixture should fill about 1/4 of the mug, definitely no more than 1/3. Bake on full power for 40-50 seconds. Serve with double cream. Nom.
It looks like your microwave replaced your cake with a taco bell burrito.
The page wasn’t loading for me and as soon as I finished reading the caption the picture popped up and jumpscared me 💀
You also want to avoid microwaving run-of-the-mill paper bags. For instance, ‘American Home Shield’ points out that popcorn usually comes in bags that have susceptors that ‘eat up’ the radio waves that your microwave oven produces, and are safe to use. However, regular grocery bags would catch fire.

My Wife’s Favorite Night Time Snack. Microwave The Pepperonis Until They Are Finished Bleeding Horrible Yellow Oil
This is probably soo good. And all the grease is in the napkin. Lately I've been hating pep pizza bc soo dang greasy. I love crispy pepperoni though.
I have ALWAYS toweled of my pizza, especially pepperoni or sausage.
Load More Replies...Try putting pepperonis and cheese on one of those puffed rice cake things, microwave for 30 seconds. One of my favorite snacks! Soup crackers/saltines work as a mini alternative!
Plain bagels. Toast them first, then top with pizza sauce, pepperoni and cheese. Place under broiler until cheese is nice and melted.
Load More Replies...Similarly, you don’t want to microwave any plastic grocery bags, either! Heating plastic up can release hazardous materials. Plastic containers are generally a big no-no, too, unless specifically stated that they’re safe for heating.
The same goes for travel mugs. If it has steel or isn’t labeled as microwave-safe, don’t plop it in the microwave oven. Opt for a regular mug, instead.
Toddler Learned How To Use The Microwave
Much better here than being swallowed. A new microwave is much less expensive than surgery. Batteries are lethal.

My Microwave Caught On Fire
My coffee machine once caught on fire. Importers paid for a new kitchen counter top
It looks as though you were quite lucky. It could have been a lot worse.
Though it’s obvious to most of us (well, hopefully…), you really shouldn’t be drying your clothes in the oven either. That’s what dryers are for. Or go the simple route and just hang your clothing on a rack or line. Microwaving your wet dress shirt before an important meeting isn’t how you want to start your day, believe us!
After 60 Hours Of No Power In Middle Of Freezing Winter, I Got Electricity For An Hour And I Thought That It Would Be A Good Idea To Thaw Frozen Honey But I Forgot To Open Lid
And taste the faint hint of everything you've cooked in the microwave the past 10 times..
Load More Replies...Most will tell you "Honey doesn't spoil, it doesn't go off". But you just spoiled the honey!
You should have closed it in a zip lock and put it in hot water. You could heat the water on stove If your water heater needs time to heat up
You thaw or decrystallize frozen(?!) honey in a container of hot water, not the microwave.
Don't Try To Microwave An Avocado
Thawing Chorizo In A Microwave
Why? Cover? Plate?? This is user stupidity. So gross and unsanitary
Furthermore, you should avoid microwaving hardboiled eggs (they’ll explode, or rather, eggsplode) and hot peppers (they can cause fires and will release chemicals that can burn your eyes). Also, steer clear of heating up styrofoam containers and Chinese takeout boxes. You should also avoid turning on the microwave without anything inside because it may damage the appliance!
I Got The White Mug For Christmas In 2018, Microwave Safe. I Got Black One For Christmas In 2019, Not Microwave Safe

Yes, you have to be careful of metallic trims on dishes in the microwave. They can get very hot.
My Microwave Lunch Jumped Up And Flipped
Those are Hormel Compleats, and you're not supposed to take the top cover all the way off when heating.
I have never had one but I thought that's what it looked like it was. I think the packaging should say the meal might "flip out" or actually flip over if you completely remove the cover. 😂
Load More Replies...I recognize that dish after a very brief relationship with a depressed dude....why are you eating HungryMan "stew" that came from a 7-11?!
This Is My Luck
Pretty impressive luck: nobody got hurt and all the food is still contained!
I also learned the hard way that just because something is glass doesn't mean it's necessary microwave safe. It could have metal, dyes or air bubbles that can cause the glass to crack or shatter in the microwave. Also sometimes putting cold glass (like from the refrigerated or freezer) in the microwave can cause temperature fluctuations that can cause it to crack. So don't be me- 1.always check to make sure there is a "microwave safe" symbol on the glass. 2. If you get a glass object from a cold place let it come to room temperature before microwaving.
It looks like one of those disposable plastic bowls which state "Not Microwave or Dishwasher safe" on the bottom. The hottest part of the bowl would have been that lip, so that's where it failed.
Load More Replies...According to the National Fire Protection Association, you should never plug microwave ovens into extension cords. Always plug them directly into the wall outlet. The organization also warns not to open the oven too quickly: do it slowly and away from your face to avoid getting burned by the steam.
Just Tried (And Failed) To Install My New $450 Microwave. It Was On The Ice Chest When I Went To Grab A Drill And The Cat Knocked It Off
The greatest thing to knock off the counter. Cat saw and executed...
Load More Replies...Exactly. How big was the cat? This sounds like a human mistake to me.
Load More Replies...The cat did not knock that off. Poor planning did. Something that would happen to me too LOL.
New microwaves come with a paper template for hole locations and back wall plate location. Those should be done first, then microwave hooks on wall plate, tip it up and insert two top screws thru upper cabinet. Also don't forget to change motor for your vent direction, put on metal plate for recirculating.
Mine came set up for recirculating... you flip it to vent.

It looks cute, shuts tight, and does exactly what I need it to do (hold bottles of medicine). I don't think I would risk spray-painting a working appliance, but you do you, random internet mom!
Not that bad. Just peel the paint off the door window. My mom's on an art deco phase and I have to admit, it does look good!
8-Year-Old Remembered To Take The Foil Flavor Packet Out. She Forgot To Add Water
I did this exactly once. Had to replace a plastic ramen dish. Have been very careful not to repeat the mistake.
I did this once when I was 6 with a Cup O' Noodles. I forgot the water, started the microwave, and the noodles and styrofoam cup caught fire. My mother (thank goodness she was there) quickly opened the microwave and smothered the container with a tea towel. Then she called me over from my wide-eyed, frozen in the corner of the kitchen spot, to explain what had happened and how to avoid it in future. I recall that I cried most of the afternoon, frightened that I nearly burned the house down. I stayed on the opposite side of the kitchen, away from the microwave, for a few years! Even to this day, it's my last resort as an appliance! I will use a kettle, oven, stove, or air popper instead!
Load More Replies...i remember my dad did this once. the microwave and house smelt like burnt top o ramen for months.
Why would you put ramen in the microwave though? It only takes a couple of minutes on the hob
What’s more, microwaves can and do heat food unevenly, so you ought to stir the food, say, before giving it to your kids. You don’t want them burning their mouths. The NFPA also warns to never microwave baby bottles for the same reason. Instead, warm them in a bowl or under the tap, but make sure you're not using hot water to do so.
Listen, Britney, All I Wanted Was Some Hot Chocolate Before Bed
You literally microwaved a photo of someone’s melt down, what did you expect?
The fact that this image of Britney was ever put onto a mug is shameful.
What you do is heat the water first before adding your powder. Yes, I've learned from this mistake.
If you use milk, mixing the chocolate in first keeps it from boiling over :D

When Only 4 Seconds Are Left... Never Ever Will Try Cooking Eggs In The Microwave
Eggs actly! I just learned that in 45 seconds i can have an over easy fried egg perfect for sandwiches. I can also do scrambled eggs in 30 second intervals and stirring. It's usually 90 seconds for 2 eggs, 2 minuets for 3. You can get better results if you don't use full power.
Load More Replies...Come on guys - to cook eggs in the microwave use a toothpick and prick holes in several places in both the yolk and the white. Then cook a short time on about 70% power. NO shells either
Scramble, 2 eggs, milk and diced ham, place into microwave and have a plate over the top. cook for 1 minute. remove plate and give eggs a good stir. replace plate and microwave for 30 seconds. Eggs cooked.
I use a microwave cookware called an Eggwich, for making breakfast sandwiches. It works perfectly.
Some research has shown that microwaving food can lead to some loss in its nutritional value. Other research indicates that the story isn’t so black-and-white. The BBC reports that shorter cooking times don’t compromise nutrition (that’s one minute for broccoli). However, this will depend on what veggie you’re heating up and how much water you might be using, so there’s no easy answer here.

Microwave Door Blew Up. House Built One Year Ago
Tempered glass is... weird. A little tap in just the right spot can shatter the whole thing. I've handled it at work. I set a glass lampshade down gently on a worktable not long ago, and it exploded.
I blew up a HUGE outdoor table by sticking a spent sparkler on it. Strands of tiny glass cubes were wriggling around for minutes afteward, like they were alive.
Load More Replies...Why is the microwave over the stove and in a cupboard? It seems the steam from the stove would raise into the cupboard as there isn't proper ventilation as well as all the splatter marks on the base of the microwave
Could have been overheating? Am assuming there's a vent for it, re: surrounded by cupboards? Moved into a house a couple of years ago with a (non-working) completely fitted fridge-freezer left behind. Pulled it out for disposal and found that there were no vents behind it and walls completely blackened. :(

I don't how these are anchored- but could it also be it wasn't fastened well? It just seems much for a popped bottle. Or can a bottle really pull a microwave off the wall?

My Coffee Was Cold. So I Microwaved It. I've Had This Mug For 4 Years And Never Looked At The Bottom I Guess
For those of you wondering what's happening, this is what happens when you microwave ceramic mugs not rated for microwaves. The material is slightly porous and that tiny amount of water that gets in expands violently when it turns to steam and can crack the cup more. Ceramic itself does not absorb microwaves, but many minerals in the glaze do, so it's able to get hot enough to severely burn your hand and even melt the glaze. Don't ask why I know this, but if you lick the outside of a cup that this happens to, it tastes like an odd combination of chemicals and whatever drink was in the cup.
I only have microwave and dishwasher safe mugs... Except my wife's fancy ones, but I don't use those and I don't clean them either!
I can't really tell what is wrong with the mug. I'm not sure if I see cracks or if that is the intended design?
Ever Microwaved A Porcelain Mug For Tea But Forgot The Water?
No, because I’m not a cretin and I own a kettle. Bloody yanks, disrespecting tea. Disgraceful.
What the heck? You guys microwave water for tea?? Why no kettle? This is disgraceful.

Load More Replies...I'm gonna wade into the quagmire here. Tea needs to be made with boiling water 100C my electric kettle takes less than 2 minutes to boil, it took my 900 wat microwave over 6 minutes to boil water. That is why English people say you can't make tea in a microwave because it will likely not be hot enough to make a proper cup of tea.
I haven’t but my sister once did that with noodles, she blew up the microwave and set the noodles on fire and melted the bowl (the bowl was plastic)

After all I know about not putting eggs in a microwave, stupid me did it just to see what actually happens. What happens is you spend the next 30 minutes cleaning your microwave. Those little holes you see, yeah egg gets in those holes.
It was an eggsplosion. I guess the yolks on you. You wound up with egg on your face. You were shell shocked. I got a dozen of these.
But sunny sides are so easy. Put eggs on greased pan.Careful not to break the yokes. Heat slightly on medium or medium -low. Wait till the white becomes opaque but yellow becomes thick and great for dipping. Enjoy. Or while the egg/s are cooking a dash of your favorite spices makes it super good. I like a dash of chicken Vegeta. Yum! Its this stuff if you don't know. https://www.vegeta.us.com/us/products/all-purpose-seasoning/vegeta-no-msg-chicken

It's Probably My Fault For Microwaving Bacon
I think the problem was the plate. It looks more like a decorative plate. Probably wasn't microwave proof
I microwave bacon but I put a double layer of paper towels on a plate then lay bacon on paper towel then cover with paper towel. Makes clean up a snap and you can get crispy bacon with no grease.
Gold trim on your plate did that. Bacon is always crispy from the microwave.
They've been making microwave bacon trays at least since the '70s. little incline so the grease can drain, I like the ones that hold the bacon up on it's side with skewers totally out of the grease. Honestly that plate doesn't look microwave safe in the first place, and bacon grease will get up over 200F

Water can't get much above 200F in the microwave, grease can. The top edge of the bowl was probably near room temperature. Too high a temperature gradient. cover with something to keep the heat in and spread it out, silicon is good, also add a bit of water in the bottom, like a tsp, it'll boil off.
Yes. You have to be careful to heat ceramics, glass included, evenly and not too fast. Else they break.

Start heating at 30 seconds, possibly check at 15. You can always put it in for more time if it's not hot enough. Remember to stir it when checking it. There will be cold spots, stirring it spreads the heat and you might not need to heat it again.

Someone Broke My Microwave By Microwaving Something Metal, Probably A Camera
I just taught my 59 year old friend 2 weeks ago metal doesn't go in the microwave. This was after he put an aluminum take out dish in the microwave; luckily nothing bad happened. And no, I didn't see him put it in otherwise I would've stopped him from playing Russian microwave roulette
you can safely put thicker amounts of metal into the microwave. i forget how the reaction works exactly, but thinner metal items like forks and certain dishware can cause sparking, but thicker metal items like industrial restaurant bowls dont do that. i used to do it all the time to warm up frosting in our bakery, never once saw a spark

Tried To Heat Up My Dinner. The Plate Just Exploded In The Microwave
Looks like a pretty big sausage. And I'd assume they were having some sort of sides. Maybe one of those sachets of flavoured rice you add to boiling water. There is a spanish style one that pairs well with chorizo for a simple meal.

Well. You can microwave them. But I don't think the company that made the the product would be liable for whatever cancer you end up with from eat food full of microplastics.

With those you are supposed to microwave the water in a separate container and pout that into the instant lunch according to the directions in big letters on the cup.

Boil An Egg In The Microwave, They Said... It Will Be Fine, They Said
Why do people think they can cook eggs still in the shell any other way than boiling.
You can boil an egg in the microwave, have done it. I just pierced a hole in the top of the shell beforehand.

Some plastic dishes/containers are microwave safe. But they tend to be thick and are advertised as such. Those cheaper thin containers are NEVER microwave safe

I see a gopher coming out of a hole. Top right lighter brown is his nose. Smaller light brown to the left of the nose would be his right eye. The two light browns below the nose are his front feet resting on the ground. The dark stain on the glass is the dark hole he is emerging from.

A Cooking Tip: Don't Boil Eggs In A Microwave
Microwave ovens are not idiot-proof. Some of these people would have benefited from reading a) the microwave instruction book and b) the cooking instructions on the food. (And why would anybody want to microwave an avocado? Sheesh!)
Sadly they aren't. We gave our aunt an old microwave, it had lasted for years and my mother upgraded. My aunt killed it in a few weeks. She also melted the spout off a stainless steel kettle. Then couldn't work out why our family refused to give her things.

Eggs do really well in the microwave if you scramble. The key is scramble, then 30 seconds. Stir. Evaluate. Keep doing in 10-30 sec increments until done. My 5 year old make his own scrambled eggs this way.

One time, in a hotel room at a robotics competition (I'm 15) I expressed a desire to microwave a donut hole for the longest possible time at max power. My teammates ignored me, but after three minutes the microwave began to smoke and we all panicked because we thought it would set off the smoke alarm. In my defense, I hadn't taken my meds, and while the others were purely accidental, I did this on purpose.
