Many people, including us, have what we think is a rather peculiar relationship with technology. Household appliances sometimes feel like they have a life of their own. And you have to know how to coax them to do what they were built for. We find microwaves, in particular, to be extremely temperamental! And we’re not alone.

Bored Panda has compiled a list of the unluckiest and most painful microwave heating fails from around the net. Scroll down, upvote the pics that made you cringe the hardest, and remember to always, always treat tech with respect and to put your safety first.

Mine does the same thing when I accidentally press buttons out of order. It assumes I’m a little kid playing with the buttons and will not turn on unless the “Clear” button is pushed twice (or it’s unplugged and then plugged back in).

PSA: do not try this at home. We did this in the 90s and my friend's microwave had burn marks and there would have been a fire if we hadn't stopped it. We did a few okay, so no idea what the difference was (maybe the label on the other side), but it's not worth doing unless you're 16 and your parents don't supervise you... Wait, did I say that last part out loud? I mean it's not worth doing, end of story.

That's a movie prop hack there. Shows like Star Trek often showing alien food which I reckon many times they went to effort to create. A plate full of these would be easy / cheap and they could sell it with the wording. Made from the swim bladder of the Gardovian Jump Fish or some such baloney.

If you ever wonder whether or not you can safely microwave something, it’s really not a sign of weakness to take the time to do some honest research. Sure, you might be hungry, but it’s always better to be safe than sorry, especially where home appliances are concerned. The last thing you want is to start an electrical fire at home because you wanted some popcorn.

If you don’t happen to have your microwave oven’s manual, it’s best to do some Googling. Don’t just rely on half-remembered myths about what is and isn’t safe to pop in the oven. One thing that you definitely don’t want to microwave is aluminum foil. It burns and ignites and can be incredibly dangerous. So, first off, avoid placing aluminum or any other metal inside the appliance. That means no forks in plates of takeaway and no spoons in mugs either!

Microwave mug cakes can be amazing! Pro tips: the amount of cake mixture you make using one egg is far more than you can fit in one mug. The mixture should fill about 1/4 of the mug, definitely no more than 1/3. Bake on full power for 40-50 seconds. Serve with double cream. Nom.

You also want to avoid microwaving run-of-the-mill paper bags. For instance, ‘American Home Shield’ points out that popcorn usually comes in bags that have susceptors that ‘eat up’ the radio waves that your microwave oven produces, and are safe to use. However, regular grocery bags would catch fire.

Similarly, you don’t want to microwave any plastic grocery bags, either! Heating plastic up can release hazardous materials. Plastic containers are generally a big no-no, too, unless specifically stated that they’re safe for heating.

The same goes for travel mugs. If it has steel or isn’t labeled as microwave-safe, don’t plop it in the microwave oven. Opt for a regular mug, instead.

Though it’s obvious to most of us (well, hopefully…), you really shouldn’t be drying your clothes in the oven either. That’s what dryers are for. Or go the simple route and just hang your clothing on a rack or line. Microwaving your wet dress shirt before an important meeting isn’t how you want to start your day, believe us!

Furthermore, you should avoid microwaving hardboiled eggs (they’ll explode, or rather, eggsplode) and hot peppers (they can cause fires and will release chemicals that can burn your eyes). Also, steer clear of heating up styrofoam containers and Chinese takeout boxes. You should also avoid turning on the microwave without anything inside because it may damage the appliance!

I also learned the hard way that just because something is glass doesn't mean it's necessary microwave safe. It could have metal, dyes or air bubbles that can cause the glass to crack or shatter in the microwave. Also sometimes putting cold glass (like from the refrigerated or freezer) in the microwave can cause temperature fluctuations that can cause it to crack. So don't be me- 1.always check to make sure there is a "microwave safe" symbol on the glass. 2. If you get a glass object from a cold place let it come to room temperature before microwaving.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, you should never plug microwave ovens into extension cords. Always plug them directly into the wall outlet. The organization also warns not to open the oven too quickly: do it slowly and away from your face to avoid getting burned by the steam.

New microwaves come with a paper template for hole locations and back wall plate location. Those should be done first, then microwave hooks on wall plate, tip it up and insert two top screws thru upper cabinet. Also don't forget to change motor for your vent direction, put on metal plate for recirculating.

Toaster on top of microwave, so cat doesn't really fit & keeps falling back to stove, hence banging. Enter kitchen, cat gives me "WHAT?" look, jumps again. ... ... ...

I did this once when I was 6 with a Cup O' Noodles. I forgot the water, started the microwave, and the noodles and styrofoam cup caught fire. My mother (thank goodness she was there) quickly opened the microwave and smothered the container with a tea towel. Then she called me over from my wide-eyed, frozen in the corner of the kitchen spot, to explain what had happened and how to avoid it in future. I recall that I cried most of the afternoon, frightened that I nearly burned the house down. I stayed on the opposite side of the kitchen, away from the microwave, for a few years! Even to this day, it's my last resort as an appliance! I will use a kettle, oven, stove, or air popper instead!

What’s more, microwaves can and do heat food unevenly, so you ought to stir the food, say, before giving it to your kids. You don’t want them burning their mouths. The NFPA also warns to never microwave baby bottles for the same reason. Instead, warm them in a bowl or under the tap, but make sure you're not using hot water to do so.

Eggs actly! I just learned that in 45 seconds i can have an over easy fried egg perfect for sandwiches. I can also do scrambled eggs in 30 second intervals and stirring. It's usually 90 seconds for 2 eggs, 2 minuets for 3. You can get better results if you don't use full power.

Come on guys - to cook eggs in the microwave use a toothpick and prick holes in several places in both the yolk and the white. Then cook a short time on about 70% power. NO shells either

Scramble, 2 eggs, milk and diced ham, place into microwave and have a plate over the top. cook for 1 minute. remove plate and give eggs a good stir. replace plate and microwave for 30 seconds. Eggs cooked.

Some research has shown that microwaving food can lead to some loss in its nutritional value. Other research indicates that the story isn’t so black-and-white. The BBC reports that shorter cooking times don’t compromise nutrition (that’s one minute for broccoli). However, this will depend on what veggie you’re heating up and how much water you might be using, so there’s no easy answer here.

Why is the microwave over the stove and in a cupboard? It seems the steam from the stove would raise into the cupboard as there isn't proper ventilation as well as all the splatter marks on the base of the microwave

Could have been overheating? Am assuming there's a vent for it, re: surrounded by cupboards? Moved into a house a couple of years ago with a (non-working) completely fitted fridge-freezer left behind. Pulled it out for disposal and found that there were no vents behind it and walls completely blackened. :(

If it cost $200 just for the door *handle*, I'd say it's a scam from the manufacturer. If you can't fix it w/glue & duct tape, time to buy a new one. I just bought a nice one (albeit small) for $45 at Best Buy. Fancy large ones were all under $200.

For those of you wondering what's happening, this is what happens when you microwave ceramic mugs not rated for microwaves. The material is slightly porous and that tiny amount of water that gets in expands violently when it turns to steam and can crack the cup more. Ceramic itself does not absorb microwaves, but many minerals in the glaze do, so it's able to get hot enough to severely burn your hand and even melt the glaze. Don't ask why I know this, but if you lick the outside of a cup that this happens to, it tastes like an odd combination of chemicals and whatever drink was in the cup.

Be carefule. Some mugs from china have been found to have lead in the paint or glaze.

that is not porcelain btw that is ceramic.the clay used in ceramics has teeny tiny airbubbles.when u heat them , those bubbles burst. and this happens. u may put hot (prefarably not boiling) food/liquid in them but never put ceramics in microwaves, ovens..

They weren't microwaving tea, they were microwaving water before making tea. Can someone tell me why it makes a difference as to how the water is heated before placing the tea in it? Does hot water from a microwave taste different than hot water from a kettle?

I'm gonna wade into the quagmire here. Tea needs to be made with boiling water 100C my electric kettle takes less than 2 minutes to boil, it took my 900 wat microwave over 6 minutes to boil water. That is why English people say you can't make tea in a microwave because it will likely not be hot enough to make a proper cup of tea.

But sunny sides are so easy. Put eggs on greased pan.Careful not to break the yokes. Heat slightly on medium or medium -low. Wait till the white becomes opaque but yellow becomes thick and great for dipping. Enjoy. Or while the egg/s are cooking a dash of your favorite spices makes it super good. I like a dash of chicken Vegeta. Yum! Its this stuff if you don't know. https://www.vegeta.us.com/us/products/all-purpose-seasoning/vegeta-no-msg-chicken

Used to play WoW with a friend and would chat over discord. He said he was going to microwave an egg one day and asked how long for. At the time I wasn't sure but I knew it was only a short time. So I said, I think it's maybe a minute, but you should google it. He said, no that sounds way to short then proceeded to microwave it for 15 minutes with predictable results.

They've been making microwave bacon trays at least since the '70s. little incline so the grease can drain, I like the ones that hold the bacon up on it's side with skewers totally out of the grease. Honestly that plate doesn't look microwave safe in the first place, and bacon grease will get up over 200F

Water can't get much above 200F in the microwave, grease can. The top edge of the bowl was probably near room temperature. Too high a temperature gradient. cover with something to keep the heat in and spread it out, silicon is good, also add a bit of water in the bottom, like a tsp, it'll boil off.

Start heating at 30 seconds, possibly check at 15. You can always put it in for more time if it's not hot enough. Remember to stir it when checking it. There will be cold spots, stirring it spreads the heat and you might not need to heat it again.

I did something similar. When I was first living with my husband we had a beautiful glass bowl that I wanted to serve some corn in and since I was microwaving it, I thought I'd save on dirty dishes by just microwaving it in the bowl. That's the day I learned that not all glass dishes are microwave safe!

I just taught my 59 year old friend 2 weeks ago metal doesn't go in the microwave. This was after he put an aluminum take out dish in the microwave; luckily nothing bad happened. And no, I didn't see him put it in otherwise I would've stopped him from playing Russian microwave roulette

you can safely put thicker amounts of metal into the microwave. i forget how the reaction works exactly, but thinner metal items like forks and certain dishware can cause sparking, but thicker metal items like industrial restaurant bowls dont do that. i used to do it all the time to warm up frosting in our bakery, never once saw a spark

Was the plate made of melamine (that not quite ceramic, not quite plastic stuff they tend to use for casual plates & bowls)? That should never go in any microwave for any amount of time - Google it. Melamine might not explode the 1st time, but it COULD explode ANY time!

If there's one thing this entire list has taught us, it's that you should never microwave eggs. Stop it, people!

If those brown areas around the door are rust / chipped off paint it suggests that microwave is pretty old / seen a lot of use.

Bring water to a hard boil. Then remove from heat, put in the eggs, cover with a lid, and in 15 minutes the residual heat will have boiled the eggs.
