I hate to break it to you, but happiness has never been the core of most religions. Islam calls for jihad (Surah At-Tawbah [9:29]), Christians exemplify examples of men who worked hard despite persecution (1 Thes. 2:9), and Sikhs carry a kirpan to as a symbolic reminder of the constant struggle of good and morality over the forces of evil and injustice. In most religions, people are told to spread their faith and serve their god - making the needs or desires of the flesh of secondary import.

Kids aren't stupid

Kids overhear stuff. They go online, and watch tv, and talk to other kids who are more exposed to politics. It is impossible to avoid. A kid that age will probably have questions about what is going on politically.

Kids should understand that politics can, and often do, affect them directly. I learned that in the Little Rock school crisis. The principal and several teachers at my elementary school were fired because they supported integration. The Little Rock high schools were closed down to avoid integration. All my long life I have taken politics seriously and participated actively. I started out by holding signs at polling places when I was 12.
