Aww! My Chihuahua mix would literally kiss my boo boos. She also appointed herself my disabled mother's guardian. She wouldn't allow anyone she didn't know into my mother's room. We'd have to explain that the person was a friend and all was well. She would then jump up on mom's bed and "patrol", by walking up and down the adge in front of mom as long as the visit lasted. Usually, while growling. After almost 30 years, I still miss her.

We may like to think of our pets bringing these surprising gifts to us as a sign of their care, love, and generosity, but Yulia Popyk, the animal behavior expert from Emergency Pet Fund, told Bored Panda in an interview via email that this is not the case. This behavior, according to Popyk, is more likely due to a combination of instinct, training, and a desire for attention or rewards.
“In the case of cats, their natural hunting instincts can drive them to bring prey to their owners. This behavior is often seen as a form of ‘gifting’ or offering, and it can be a way for the cat to demonstrate their affection or to establish dominance,” Popyk said.

We also asked the animal behavior expert what makes cats bring mice, one of the most common gifts from a feline, to their owners. “Cats bring mice and other small prey animals to their owners as a way of showing affection and as a form of hunting instinct. Hunting is a natural behavior for cats, even for those that are domesticated and well-fed.”
Popyk continued: “By bringing prey to their owners, cats are essentially 'gifting' them and demonstrating their love and devotion. In the wild, cats hunt to provide food for themselves and their offspring, and this instinct remains strong in domesticated cats, even though they are no longer required to hunt for their food,” she said.

Once there was a stray cat mom in our neighborhood who brought her two kittens for me to watch them while she was gone. She left them with me and off she went. They were very shy at first but I managed to tame them and they ended up very affectionate kitties☺️. Half a year or so later mommy returned, stayed a couple of days and left with her kids. Never saw them again after that😔
However, Popyk warned that it is not recommended to encourage this behavior, as it can pose a health risk to both the cat and its owner since wild animals can carry diseases. If a case like this occurs (better safe than sorry!), Emergency Pet Fund, an alternative to classic pet insurance, can come in handy. “Additionally, it is best to discourage this behavior as it can lead to the death of the prey animals, which can cause distress and ethical concerns,” she suggested.

So if your beloved cat is bringing mice to you again and again, Popyk’s advice is to provide plenty of toys and interactive play. “Encourage your cat's hunting instincts by providing them with plenty of toys, such as feather wands and mouse toys. Engage in interactive play with your cat every day to satisfy their urge to hunt.”
Another tip to teach your cat to not bring presents is to make sure they have enough food and stimulation available for them. “Make sure your cat is well-fed and has plenty of stimulation throughout the day. Bored cats may resort to hunting and bringing prey as a form of entertainment.”

While mg husband and I were up North our new dog took off towards the forest and vanished. Our girl stood puzzled. I said to her, ‘ go get him.’ She ran off after him. I stood there on the beach mg heart racing, thinking I had made a huge mistake. Minutes passed…. Several minutes later he comes out of the forest with her behind him!!! i used to watch a rottie shepherd mix, 130 lbs of pure teddy bear! Nathan liked to pick out a piece of firewood to bring on walks. there were pieces of it all up and down that road and everyone knew who's it was : ) he was just the best dog, and I miss him mostly when I'm sad and need to hug a big dog!! he was the best to wake up to.

That is a fruit from an osage orange tree. We had one in the back yard of a home in Pennsylvania. They can really hurt when they fall on you. Next time you get one, cut it up and smell it - has an unusual smell.

I've heard them called Osage oranges but also hedge apples. Used to have a ton in my childhood backyard. Also there's another moniker... something about brains? Can't recall the exact term now, but it's pretty understandable given their appearance

My cat used to steal all of my hair ties. We would see him bat them around and carry them in his mouth, We assumed they were all under the furniture, because we found a few every now and then. But when we packed up the house to move they were nowhere to be found. We never discovered the hiding place. I like to think that somewhere down the road that someone will randomly find dozens of hair ties and be totally baffled.

One autumn, I saw a dog with a mouthful of leaves. He was snatching the leaves from the air as they were falling. Being only a small pupper, he wasn't able to hold many leaves in his mouth. He'd launch himself into the air to snatch another leaf, and as he opened his mouth to claim his prize, the other leaves would drop. He's stop, look crestfallen for a few moments, but he'd spy another leaf falling. The sadness was gone, and he happily leap to intercept. It was such a glorious sight.

This is so sweet, mine brings me bugs and once a whole bat. That resulted in him getting a rabies shot and me having to go through 3 months of treatment bc unlike my cat, I dont get a yearly rabies booster and had to have the WHOLE panel bc the bat tested positive. (I dont let them outside to wander but they have a catio. Somehow this bat got inside the screened in porch and then was caught)

Once a bat fit through the bottom of a window screen and flew around my bedroom at 4 am. Apparently they have a thin skull cap so bats can get through narrow places. This one must have not turned its sonar switch to on.

If I manage to ignore enough of the head boops from my cats in the morning and manage to stay in bed, they will both bring me toys. I can tell how long I've fallen back asleep for by how many toys are on my bed when I finally wake up. I pretty much only fall back asleep when I'm sick or depressed so I think it's their way of cheering me up or "feeding" me because I'm not getting up to have breakfast with them like normal. I absolutely do not deserve them. They are too perfect for words.

At our old house, it was safe for my pup to go out for a pee off leash. He would bring us back a pine cone every single night. We lined them up on the porch railing until no more could fit! Sometimes he'd try and get sneaky and bring one in the house. He's my best friend in the whole world.

These are so sweet! I adopted a 15-year-old lab last year and every time we go outside, she picks something up to carry around with her; sticks, rocks, leaves, toys, etc.. Since she's not keen to drop them when I reach out I never thought of them as gifts, but I shall do so from this day forward!

My kitten knows that treats come in a pouch, so she would bring the pouches and throw them at me while I slept. Then she started bring anything in a pouch. I've woken up to instant mashed potatoes, new underwear, brown sugar, etc. all being lobbed at my head.
