Bored Panda got in touch with Glenn Geher, Ph.D., to get his opinion on what to focus on so that we can live a high-quality life as we age. Geher is a professor of psychology at the State University of New York at New Paltz, a published author, and an avid marathon runner. Read on for the insights he shared with us.

Who Remembers The Original Search Engine?
Yes. Library catalogues were really wonderful. And they worked flawlessly.
Unless the card was missing or in the wrong spot
Load More Replies...I'm a librarian - the original search engine ! "We don't need books - We have the internet" I say, P**s off. We had Encyclopedias, and we knew how to read and write without red lines telling us we made a spelling mistake
Most people don't know what a thesaurus is, let alone know how to spell it. Autocorrect wants to spell dinosaur not thesaurus 🤦🏻♀️
Load More Replies...Hahaha...that makes at least two of us weirdos who can remember those scents from way back when! I read your post and immediately could smell card catalog. And mimeographs!! I remember lowering my nose to the desk to snifffff. Other one is laminator. Don't get me started on Loves Baby Soft and Jean Natee.... Aaahhhh, the power of scent can really take me back
Load More Replies...Wonder if they still teach alphabetical order anymore...just like those kids that ask me the time and stare blankly at my analog watch.
The one time in my life I skipped school. 8th grade and we just walked right off the campus. My partner in crime went to hang out with her pot head boyfriend. Where did my parents find me at? The library! I was shocked when my mom found me. She said the library was the first place she looked. I was such a dweeb.
i read dictionaries and encyclopedias for fun. and i never cut school. i'm a dweeb too!
Load More Replies...I worked in libraries from college, then over the next few years. I was in technical services and I got to put the new cards in the drawers. I loved it.
Love the smell! Scholastic at the book fair was divine.
Load More Replies...As a retired school librarian, one of my jobs was to keep it up to date with all the new books or delete the cards for the lost ones. I actually liked doing that.
Thank you from someone who spent lunch breaks and as much time as possible in my school library!
Load More Replies...Lol So about 20 years ago (!) my local public library made their catalog digital, and I wanted to research some books, but I couldn't find the card catalog. I asked the librarian who was so thrilled to tell me the entire library catalog was now in digital format and I could research my topic through their computers (which, btw, was useless because of the specificity of the search engine often gave me useless publications). And I was "oh, well, how interesting. So, if your server gets hacked or otherwise shuts down, how will you know what books you have and how to find them? Wil you just make a guess?" technology is lovely, but there's nothing wrong with the old fashioned "hard drive" of a card catalog
Funny how a picture can bring back memories of how that cards felt, smelled and sounded while „browsing“
I remember taking a field trip in 2nd grade to the library and learning how to use the Card Catalogue! 👵🏼📜
I loved those little drawers, and flipping through the cards like I was a junior detective looking through files for clues to a great mystery.
I’m amazed at how much research I accomplished way back in the analog days. I couldn’t afford the necessary books ($65 - $125), so it was time for the library - hours & hours, searching through the little drawers, I called them the Dewey Drawers.
Absolutely agree! I didn't even mind honestly
Load More Replies...A card catalog is like a directory; it directs you to the location of information. The cards themselves don't contain encyclopedic passages.
Load More Replies...The first time I walked into a library that didn't have these I was totally freaked out and didn't know what to do. Of course it was on a computer but it was still about his basic as those cards but harder to navigate.
Wow... Spent HOURS going through those little cards, looking for information, links, whatever ... and you didn't need a computer to access information! There was always the possibility of serendipitous facts coming to the surface, as you scanned other cards while thumbing through. Something that NEVER happens with computers!
Loved looking through those cards in those little drawers. Never lost the signal or kicked you out!
I will be 46 in June and I think after my generation things went downhill for students lol
There was a help button too. You asked the librarian. But somtimes this sytsem failed. You look and find the book gone
Just looking at these old search engines made me nostalgic. I loved our town library.
Gawd, and they used to give us actual graded tests in school on the proper card catalogue format too. So glad that's still imprinted on my psyche, lol
I have an old, sold wood, dovetail joined one and it's my prize possession antique. I want more. Much older than the ones in this pic
Some day I will have one, a real one. Those drawers fit nothing but the cards but I will have a REAL card catalog not some cheesy knock off.
US elementary school, high school, and public libraries tend to use two separate systems for shelving books. Firstly, Fiction (stories, novels, etc) is shelved alphabetically by author. Secondly, the Non-fiction (facts, theories, how-to, etc) is categorized by Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), sometimes called the Dewey Decimal System. In US university libraries, and most community college libraries, the fiction and non-fiction are combined into the Library of Congress Classification (LCC), which has a large section for literature and poetry. Some other countries use the DDC or LCC systems which were developed in the US, some adapt them, and some have created unique systems of their own.
I cataloged books this way when I worked at the college library in the 80s.
I was amazed at the endless rows of them at the Library of congress in 1963 when I was 11.
This takes me back to my childhood. I can smell this room. On the rare occasions I got to go to a public library, I would always take a deep whiff when I walked through the door. Still love the smell of books❤️📚
It's too bad so many of these catalogs were simply trashed... there was a lot of information on the cards that was NOT transferred to the digital version. Ask any librarian who's been around for 30 years.
I remember when the New York public library turned the catalog into a batch of soft cover books.
Such fond memories of the public library in my town!! Their catalogue was a most awesome feature to discover for teenage me!
I wish these were still here. We all can use our brains a little more. 👍🏼
I worked part-time in library in high school and had to learn the Dewey Decimal System. As long as everything was filed in the correct order it worked very well.
Even worse: doing dissertation research and having to go to the actual library to hunt for scholarly journal indexes printed on flimsy paper.
You had to work to get the books and information. Remember doing my term paper.
oh yeah, retired librarian here. Been there, done that.despite dire prophesies, libraries are flourish and books are as eagerly devoured as ever. Lets hope illiteracy will not pull everyone under.
Yes. The hush of a library. Being surrounded by books you can take down and read a few pages. The insanely huge tables to spread out on. The smell of lovely lovely books. Sorry, a phone can't compete.
Not everything was better in the old days. I never want back this instead of online search :)
Before retirement, I worked in an office where no-one seemed to care about organizing files that were listed in alphanumerical order. So I placed a sign up that said "Anything to the left of here is organized alphabetically. Anything to the right is organized numerically." That had them stuffed. Eh heh.
WAS A ROYAL PAIN IN THE PATOOIE! IF YOU FORGOT, YOU HAD TO GO BACK.& cP CHECK AGAIN...AND AGAIN...
Yep, I was one of the people who used to write those cards out, and file them.
I worked in a library for 8 years. When I started, their filing was 10 years behind. It was such a labour intensive job. Cataloguing books, typing up multiple cards just for 1 book, and then filing all the cards. I was proud of myself when I left, that it was all up to date. Just in time for computers to come in and for it all to be put into the computer system by somebody else.
No wonder all the librarians were so grouchy all the time, and constantly stalking you while you searched the card catalog for something. Good times.
First job was in a college library when I was in high school. 25 cents an hour. Does that tell you how long ago it was?
That must be at a university. My city library's was only two of the bureaus.
OMG. How can you compare a simple computer search to those massive card files??? I'm over 66 btw
Were not cross indexed to any other books or searchable. Also could not tell you if the book was available.
We already had a computer to search where the books where. That was in the 90's
Professor Geher explained to Bored Panda that the human body "is a wear item" and that there's an increase in health issues associated with aging. "From a societal perspective, making sure to provide easy access to high-quality health care—especially among older folks—is essential. And as we all know, some nations seem to do this better than do others," he said.
"This said, lack of social connections is a known detrimental factor when it comes to health. And unfortunately, many elders tend to find themselves living alone for various reasons (e.g., death of a partner). And loneliness tends to be relatively prevalent in urbanized areas—which are, of course very common in the modern world."
As such, public policy and government experts ought to prioritize issues like ensuring that elders have access to high-quality medical care and have safety nets "to help cultivate social connections." From a large-scale health perspective, these are both critical issues.
This Made Me Laugh!
I Know That Feeling…
You know you are getting old when you look backwords instead of forward.
Geher, who is currently 53 years old, shared with Bored Panda that he's training for his 12th marathon right now. "I am fully expecting my time to be much slower than my time when I ran my first marathon at 29," he revealed that, as a result, he himself has been thinking about the issue of embracing the aging process.
"Yes, aging is a beast. It comes with such adverse outcomes as physical decline, cognitive decline, and, often, stress and trauma associated with the increasing loss of loved ones," the professor said.
"To buffer oneself against these adverse outcomes, from the perspective of positive evolutionary psychology, folks who are getting up there in years would be wise to eat natural foods and exercise regularly, maintain an active lifestyle that includes necessary cognitive expenditure, and take steps to make sure to be socially connected to at least a small group of close others."

Now We Need A Gps To Go To The Supermarket
Geher pointed out that the adage of aging being better than the alternative is generally true. "Taking the steps mentioned here can go a long way toward helping make the aging process a relatively positive experience."
Professor Geher also has a Substack page and also writes a blog on Psychology Today. You can find the newest topics he covers there.

It’s easy to see why the sub is as popular as it is. It’s taking a very relatable subject (aging, getting grumpy, wanting simplicity, realizing that the younger generations might lack taste) and putting a fun spin on it. It’s a corner of the internet where you can find the humor in getting woken up by your bladder at 3 am and having an ID card that shows you were born before the turn of the millennium.

It might sound cliche, but your age really is just a number. What matters far more is your lifestyle, how active a social life you have, and how you feel on a daily basis. If you’re healthy, active, surrounded by loved ones, and find gratitude in the smallest things, then it really doesn’t matter if you’re 70 or 17—you’re living life well.
However, a happy and healthy life isn’t something that happens automatically. It requires a lot of personal effort, a dash of discipline, and the willingness to set strong boundaries.
There is no definitive way to be happy because everyone's an individual with unique goals, but it’s vital that you get the basics right first. These include taking care of your physical health, staying mentally sharp, maintaining your social connections, and living in the present.
As far as your physical health is concerned, the habits that you want to develop as soon as possible are common sense ones. Like getting enough sleep every night. Drinking plenty of water. Spending time in nature. Moving lots. Reducing screentime. Eating slightly less than you normally would. Avoiding drinking alcohol and smoking. Wearing sunscreen. And choosing to eat veggies, healthy fats, and protein instead of processed foods and refined sugars.

Absolutely!
Health and fitness coach Anna Armagno Toussaint previously explained to Bored Panda that we should all strive to focus only on the things that we can control in life instead of worrying about the things that we can’t.
"You can control what you put into your body. You can control your water intake and the foods you choose. You can choose to exercise or be sedentary. In most cases, there are good or bad decisions you can make. And the biggest one is that you can choose your mindset about things," she said.

I bought bicycles for my children once. They came in boxes. I had to construct them myself. Instant 'how the hell do I do that?' On the instructions, one action I had to do was to make a space between the break pad and rim of the tyres. The space had to be the width of a dime. I'm Irish ! What the F**k size is a dime?

The fitness coach explained that there will always be hereditary factors that you’ll have to work around. Some might be minor. Others might be as serious as autoimmune diseases. You can’t choose these things, so you have to work around them. Embracing a positive outlook can help you get through those tough times, as you come to terms with reality.
Meanwhile, fitness coach Anna told Bored Panda that what really doesn’t help is feeling jealous that someone else might have physical advantages that you don’t. Whether it’s seemingly limitless energy or the ability to recover quickly after exercise. You can’t let those feelings of resentment dominate you.

If you find yourself struggling with your physical or mental health or having trouble with the very idea of getting older, it’s perfectly fine to ask for help. Reach out to your friends for advice. Talk to an expert about your goals. Seek out a therapist. Getting another person’s perspective on your struggles is invaluable!
Age UK, the country’s leading charity, previously told Bored Panda that staying active is paramount as we age. It helps to have a host of different hobbies and to try out new activities. Not only will they keep you moving, they’ll also stimulate your mind, and help you forge new friendships. The activities could be anything: from doing arts and crafts or taking photography or computer classes to doing gardening or joining a book club. Social isolation is horrible for our health, so it's essential that you regularly find ways to connect to other people.

True. But this works best especially in situations where you're trying to get into a bar or club. Even if you're born in 1999 that make you 24 years old this year.
We keep our minds sharp when we learn new skills and socialize with others. You can also do more mentally stimulating activities like putting together puzzles or playing games in your free time.
"If we want our brain to stay in peak condition, we should use it. In fact, one of the theories about reducing or delaying cognitive aging is referred to as the 'use it or lose it' theory. Research shows that things like learning languages helps keep us brighter as we age. It is just as important to look after your brain by exercising your thinking skills, as you would do physical exercise to look after your body,” Age UK told Bored Panda.

Meanwhile, whether or not we’re nostalgic about the past will depend a lot on how (un)happy our childhoods were. Child and adolescent therapist Kemi Omijeh, a member of the BACP, previously explained to us that our childhoods are the foundation of who we are as adults. If we had a happy childhood, we’re likely to yearn for the ‘good old days.’ However if we faced a lot of tough times when we were kids, we might not want to reminisce much about the past, instead focusing on the present and future.

"Nostalgia can also be a good coping strategy for times of low mood and challenges," the therapist told Bored Panda earlier. "If we end up comparing it to our experiences today and feeling like nothing is as good as it was, then this will inevitably affect our mood and our ability to do what we need to do. We can become stuck in our nostalgia; in which case it might be best to seek help from a counseling professional to help you process your past in order to enjoy your present..”

Here's how old I am. I remember when suddenly bubble gum kept fruity flavors well and was actually soft as soon as you started chewing it. The flavor USED to drain out within seconds, and it would be stiff as hell until your teeth and mouth enzymes loosened it up. And, my fellow children from the Stranger Things years, do you realize why that was? It was because they had JUST invented ARTIFICIAL bubble gum. Bazooka, Topps and all those old-school bubble gums were made from tree sap. So here's how old you are: even if those old rumors of gum staying in your stomach for 40 years were true, it'd still be gone.

Random things I recently learned might not be a thing anymore: 1. A friend of mine has a job at a wedding store. I asked her if most groom's tuxes were plain, three piece or had a cummerbund. She had to Google cummerbund. so no. 2. Tried to find a cute key topper for my house key. I used to have a rubbery one that looked like a mushroom. Went to four stores (even Wal-Mart automotive section where they used to have a spinning rack of them) No one even knew what I was talking about. (At least they still have them on Amazon) 3. Wanted to find cute folders for a project. Most stores only have very basic solid color ones, I finally found one store that had slightly more pretty floral ones but I could not find ones with things like art, actors, bands, popular cartoons, wildlife, movies, ect. Is it just my local stores that are like this? Surely kids can get like a matching dinosaur folder/notebook/pencil somewhere.
All those are now in Scrapbooking supplies! Except for the cummerbunds... you're on your own with those. Haven't seen one since dad wore a tux to his band gigs.

One of the hardest things about getting older is getting used to being the authority. Like... The first time I had to tell a teacher off because they were treating my son badly was incredibly hard and had me totally shaking. (She sided with the bully over my son's asking for help, against the advice of the vice principal of the school.) My anger helped me do it, though. It's weird getting over the power dynamics established as a kid.

(She sided with the bully over my son's asking for help, against the advice of the vice principal of the school.) My anger helped me do it, though. It's weird getting over the power dynamics established as a kid.
