40 Examples Of Writers Leaving Fun And Unique Surprises “Dedicated To Those Who Read The Dedications”
If you’re a book person, the chances are you've stumbled across a scribbled dedication in the very front of the book after the title page. Usually rather personal, these dedications can praise a person but also tell them something nice, memorable or even funny. It’s totally up to a giver to decide the message of the dedication.
Some people have surely taken this small and symbolic thing to a whole new level and turned it into an endeavor in its own right. The results vary from genuinely hilarious to slightly weird, but it turns out that a good book dedication is a form of art in itself.
Writer and book blogger Ezioma Nwanyimma who goes by the Twitter handle @EziomaKalu has clearly taken good notice of that and wrapped up the most interesting book dedications in this viral thread. Scroll down to see what she dug up!

To your wife Marganit, who kept your ungrateful butt fed and clothed and kept your children alive while you sat there and wrote this book
„Dedication: To my daughter Leonora without whose never-failing sympathy and encouragement this book would have been finished in half the time.“ — P.G. Wodehouse The Heart of a Goof 1929
Amen brother! How about to my (5 fur-babies) who slowed me down during the pandemic...
And even after adding my last name to the Macroshaft dictionary, still having a red line.

Exactly! The ammount of times my name has been corrected from Sophia to Sofia is annoying.

To find out more about the art of writing book dedications, Bored Panda reached out to Sheila Lowe, a handwriting examiner and best-selling book author, including a series of forensic mysteries “Inkslingers Ball” (2014), “Outside the Lines” (2016), “Written Off” (2018), “Proof of Life” (2019).
When asked what kind of significance a book dedication has, Lowe said that it really depends on what the person buying the book is looking for. “Collectors want only a signature with no personalization. Some intend to give the book as a gift. Others love to have the author write something personal, just for them,” she said and added that “like beauty, the significance is in the view of the beholder.”
Yeah, suck it! I've had some of those teachers in the past...specifically that one teacher in Upper six.
That’s an awful teacher, then. We are to remain professional even if we dislike a student’s work!
I love it! Mr. Allen who told me that I didn't belong in the gifted-talented clases because I was ordinary. Ordinary is great! Ans, I'm a savant when ir comes to math! So, all's good now!
Gonna puss ppl off, whatever! What the hell is wrong with some teachers? Not all! My kids tell me HORRIBLE things their teachers say and do! F*****g sick!! Always talking down on kids, making them feel dumb or not worthy! SERIOUSLY WHAT THE F**K 🤬🤬🤬 supposed to be encouraging these poor kids and instead get belittled and tore down! Real nice assholes!!!! Uugghhhh
To all the people that lived above the buildings that I was hustlin' in front of...
Nope...the fact that you were determined to prove him or her wrong... if that was not said....
First I thought this was BP censoring at it agan, but nop. And then the editors note :D
Please share title of this book. Thank you.
Load More Replies...The mere fact it was not left out shows the editor did not care of the writer's opinion of him ...Black stripes included.
Nick isn't that much of an editor, since didn't catch the pleonasm.
LOL, my cat's name is Toast! she is the best, but he is correct... no help at all!
I'm suspecting Toast spent most of his time sat on the writers' keyboard demanding attention, belly rubs and chin tickles as all good kittys do ❤️
When it comes to writing her own book dedications, Lowe said that although every time she signs her name in a book, she wants it to be meaningful, “sometimes, writing just the right words in a dedication is harder than writing the book!”
“When I know the reader, or there is a special reason, what I say is important to me. For others, I sometimes have a set phrase that I use. For example, in my new book, The Last Door, I might write something airy like, ‘It’s time to open the Last Door.’ Or for Dead Letters, which takes place at an archaeological dig, ‘I hope you ‘dig’ the book.’ Silly things like that,” Lowe told us.
He might have read it, and be one who smiles in secret. He could quite possibly be laughing at the joke of dedicating the books and you just haven't taken notice.
Yesss please. I'd also include like an asterisk meaning "no mom" lol
*asterisk (I know this makes me a douche but I couldn't resist asterisking an asterisk)
Load More Replies...I don't think I would write any if I didn't want a four hour long phone call at shortest 🤣
THIS. When I published my first book, I told my parents they were only allowed to read the first half LOL.
So, if you don't mind, what is it? I'm making a list of new books & authors.
Load More Replies...Lowe also recounted an encounter she had with American writer Michael Connelly when he signed a book for her years ago. “Knowing I was a newish writer at the time, he wrote in a book to me, ‘If writin’ is fightin’ I hope you go ten rounds,’ which meant a lot to me (though I’m sure he wrote the same to many writers, lol),” Lowe remembered. She later served on a faculty with him at a mystery writer’s conference.
“I got a shout out from the book!” “ cool you know the author in person right?” “No.”
I don’t think they mean it in a good way…
Load More Replies...If she was a better person than you are, she would be a person except she's a dog, and if the author said she was a better dog than the author was, it would imply that the author was a dog (I see the dilemma you went through trying to write that, author)
Momofuku Ando is a hero to so many people. I myself have been saved by him on occasion.
No but that trilogy, all three books are somehow dedicated to ramen. Love you Rin Chupeco ❤❤❤
Sadly, it seems like writing a book dedication was way more popular in the past than it is today. Lowe says she can only guess why it is like that. “What comes to mind is that with mass media bombarding us all the time, the world has become far less personal and people may pay less attention to that which is. Many people use electronic devices to read on, so that puts the kibosh on a written note,” she explained.
Stupid Fred, always owing people money but never paying back! ;)
Quick question: Do you know who Freddie Mercury was?

The second Red Queen book! I'm reading it for the first time, I only have a few chapters left!
I have that exact same symbol above the 'ACKNOWLOEDGEMENTS' thingy. It is from a charm bracelet I had years ago (yes, it's a thing of pride, those things are surprisingly easy to lose)
They won it fair and square. Those who were angry should have tweeted. Lol
Moreover, “often, too, readers buy books online rather than in person, so don’t have an opportunity to meet the author. For that purpose, I have printed bookplates that I sign and send to readers who request them,” Lowe said. She also added that with handwriting being less prevalent, not everyone can read a note written in cursive.
The real point is that if she would have stayed in the ******* lifeboat he would have had the door to himself. Stay in the lifeboat if the boat is sinking!
Load More Replies...Room or not, I'm kinda tired of hearing about it... There are better films out there guys.
IT!!! WAS!!! NOT!!! STEADY!!! Enough room is COMPLETELY irrelevant since the door wasn't going to hold the weight of both of them BECAUSE THEY TRIED THAT.
Load More Replies...IT WASN'T STEADY ENOUGH BECAUSE THEY BOTH TRIED AND IT ALMOST WENT UNDER WITH THE SHIP
Load More Replies...Enough about the stupid door! Had they both been on it they would have sunk too far into the water and died of hypothermia!
Even when I scream in the theatre, it’s because I’m having an awesome time and I’m so wrapped up in it :) I love horror (although I don’t always laugh at it, sometimes getting scared and screaming is fun!)

Load More Replies...Also, it's shaped like a wineglass, so another dedication there, maybe...?
There's some really important symbolism here. cummings arranged the names of the shape of an urn!
I wonder how many of those editors that rejected him are included in anthologies of American literature or poetry or are someone whose name anyone remembers.
🎶 She works hard for the money, so hard for it, Honey, so you better treat her right! 🎶
Sadly, no. I've worked with teachers who really weren't crazy about teaching. Examples : college professors and high school football coaches

Load More Replies...The next book in the series says: " To my wonderful readers. Sorry about that apology for that last cliffhanger. I'll try to avoid cliffhangers in this book. Well, except for maybe a few small ones... Because I love you guys." My phone wouldn't focus on the text so I wrote it out.
AAHHHH IT'S RICK RIORDAN!!!!!!!!! I should have known he'd be on this list. Another by him is: "To the Muse Calliope. This is long overdue. Please don't hurt me." -- The Hidden Oracle
HEROES OF OLYMPUS!!! I THINK ITS THE HOUSE OF HADES! Rick Riordan is great guy!

10+ years ago, I was in the street view for my dad's house. I'm across the street changing a flat on my car. Nowadays you can only find it on the wayback machine. I still have the screenshot saved though.
Load More Replies...In Belgium they just solved a case of a missing person with Google Street View.
Load More Replies...I think Brian May has authored or co-authored several books on astrophysics, most recently Cosmic Dust 3D about the life cycle of stars!! Maybe this is the dedication from that one?
"You make the world go 'round"! (Alas, I no longer have an a$$. It was there one day, being complimented and patted upon, and then suddenly it was gone. I am now built much like a candy apple: round and luscious on top, basically a stick on the bottom).

'Keep your friends close, but your enemies closer." ~ Michael Corleone
This is the second worst thing Reagan did to television. (The first, or course, would be "Death Valley Days".)
Google Charles Manson. The book is not dedicated to him.
Load More Replies...But, not knowing who any specific author may or may not know personally, in cases like this, it's best to clarify. Otherwise, the same can be said of most names.

Thank you. I do rely on good hearted people explaining esoteric stuff on BP. Almost every day.
Load More Replies...I liked these, but I wouid have liked them even more if the authors and titles had been identified. There were more than or two that intrigued me enough to be interested in their works.
My favourite: "Thank you to those special people in my life who I know I could trust at the other end of a climbing rope."
My favorite book dedication comes from the book Space Opera, by "For Heath, Intergalactic glamrock ambassador to Earth"
I love James Riley's acknowledgements in Half Upon a Time trilogy or Story Theirves Series, maybe even in all his books? Love that guy
In my fathers book, there is a dedication to my mother - something about "my wife who supported me" and then to me "and our daughter, Eva, who put up with it all".
These are so funny, great post. I thought I was the only author who likes to write silly dedication. Can I be number 41 pretty please?
If i were to write a book (which will never happen) it would be a sci-fi comedy with meme and movie references. I would dedicate it to memes.
