We all want to look beautiful. And there’s no shame in that. Sure, some of us might prioritize natural looks while others embrace the creative liberties offered by make-up. But at the end of the day, looking good makes us feel good. However, there’s sometimes a massive disconnect between what you want and what a beauty salon worker envisions… or is able to accomplish with their (limited) skills.
Here at Bored Panda, we’ve collected some of the most egregious examples of beauty salons messing up their clients’ make-up and hair, and completely ruining their day. Scroll down to see just how bad things can get when employees don’t get the training that they oh-so desperately need.

Paid $63 For This
Asked for layers (like a butterfly cut) and curtain bangs… I think she hated me.
This is pure and simple, " I wanna get this client outa here cause it's too much work " !!! Been doing hair for years, This was on purpose or, I went to hair school and never paid attention. Now wonder people are nervous the first time they come in. Tragic.... go online and look for ratings for another stylist. 4.5 or higher. So sorry !!!!
I've been doing hair for years. This is someone thinking they can do it themselves because "hairstyling is so easy"😄
Load More Replies...Wow thats way too choppy and would of looked amazing if done prolerly, i hope these people ask for refunds
she can fix this herself in an easy way and for free, all she needs is good scissors. Lots of tutorials on YT. (I wouldnt go back there to fix it if they offered to give me my money back!)
Like... u guys don't research before going to a hair saloon? I'm almost 30 and haven't been in one since I was 14 and they destroyed my hair xD
I would like to hear more about this "hair saloon," please!

There is a very famous french singer, Mireille Mathieu. She has this haircut from the 60's till today. She was my first thought!!!
Load More Replies...Another hairdresser that doesn't have the guts/professionalism/care to let people know not everyone can do the same cut. All depends on your hair, the thickness etc whether something will work or look like the example of not. 😕
Pro-tip. Never ask for a cut based on a celeb. Extra point if your face shape is vastly different from such celeb (triangle / square / etc...)

Load More Replies...What matters the most is that you’re personally happy with your style. If you think your hair and make-up and clothes look fabulous, then ignore all the haters. The fact of the matter is that it’s impossible to make everyone happy. No matter how trendy or avant-garde you are, there will always be someone out there who’ll have something bad to say. So it’s best to ignore the critics and be honest with yourself: the only person you have to impress is you.

This Eyebrow Trend Needs To End
The eyebrows? What abvout the lashes? the lipstick? the foundation??
Lashes? What lashes? Are they close to those black razor blades? 🤔
Load More Replies...She looks like she drank too much Ribena then had a fight with a lawn mower.
I can glue bits of black construction paper to my eyelashes, too. I choose not to do so.
They are right about the eyebrows but also the fake eyelashes are falling off and we can clearly see her lipstick is way above her lip line... Also her foundation isn't blended in very well 😔😔😔
The first time I saw eyebrows like these I thought maybe she was in the middle of her brows and had to leave suddenly to run an errand. Then I started to see it more often.
Found On A Local Makeup Artist And Beautician Page. The Look Was Called “Sunset Eye And Soap Brow”
She looks like she just walked into a bathroom where the last person dropped a bomb.
Load More Replies...She looks like she has a bad allergy. And I keep staring at that unblended bronzer just below her hairline.
You can't let the sun go down on that, and you need a lot of soap to fix it.
However, the main issue is when there’s total miscommunication between you and the people working at your local beauty salon. The odds are that if you’re at a salon, then you’re either getting ready for an important event or you want to completely change your look. So you want to look beautiful, fresh, and stylish. And if the results don’t match your expectations, you might feel frustrated, and embarrassed, and your day might genuinely be ruined.
My Hairdresser Screwed Me Up So Bad And Cut Off Half My Hair, Help (For Reference, The First Picture Is What I Asked For)
Not sure if the cut would have been possible anyway. Her hair seems a little too thin for it? But even then, the hairdresser should have told her that. Poor woman 😳
Way too thin yes, never would have worked. But it's up to the hairdresser to say that and then if the client insists....well it's their own fault.

Lady Asked For The Left Pic And Ended Up With The Right Image
People should really realize that some of these styles are not so easy to do. Not every hairdresser can do them and you often pay a lot for it because of that. Then someone said they'll do it cheaper and you end up with this 🥲 No I'm not a hairdresser myself. Just dated one in the past and saw a lot of people coming in to fix their hair after trying a cheaper hairdresser ☺️
If they can't do it because it's too complicated they should say it from the beginning, not just mess with someone's hair.
Load More Replies...More extensions. Or a wig. That hair was colored then assembled. The salon needs to tell people when a photo is of fake hair colored and styled then put on the models head.
I think the problem here is, they are not going to a professional colorist. They have extensive knowlege in techniques, tones, depths etc. Don't just go to any stylist. Do the research.
This is why we spend time thoroughly researching hairdressers. People need to realise that they may have to spend quite a lot of money to get an expert dye job and cut like the model on the left.
Friends should not do color. Especially on fine, thin, over processed hair.
Recovery After A Haircut From A Family Member Who Claimed They Used To Be A Hairdresser
Turns out she was a hairdresser’s assistant for a year in the 1980s.
The picture in the right is what happened to her in the past. The picture in the left is her hair "recovered" now, so it's longer because it's been some time and she had a new haircut that fixed it eventually. It's not what she asked for VS what she got, it's her hair in both. But yeah she should've put the photos in a different order so it would be less confusing
you could better yourself. unicorn cut. look it up on youtube. I've cut my own layers for years.
People stay at a Holiday Inn Express and think they can effortlessly cut hair!
Ooohh did she use a butcher knife to cut the hair, thats nasty the poor girl
The outgrow is worse on the second picture. Seriously doubt if it's the same girl tbh 🤔
I'm confused here: is the left one the recovery? Or the original before the "hairdresser" cousin?
What she asked for is the first photo. What they did to her is on the right.
Load More Replies...There are a few possible ways to deal with those utter salon disasters. The path you choose will depend on who you are as a person. For instance, you could embrace the awful, utterly horrible situation and decide that you will not let this define you and you will not have your day ruined by the epic fail that is your make-up and hair. Instead, you can choose to accept the funky new style and rock it as best as you can. This takes a very mature mindset, high emotional intelligence, and an aptitude for comedy. Heck, this’ll be a story to tell all your friends.
She Has To Cut It Now Because It Ruined The Hair Itself So Bad
This is exactly what happened to me! But my hair was orange instead! hahahahaha
Me too! Not the color but I think I showed this exact picture and the color was straight across...I spent like 3 hours at another salon trying to get it fixed.

The keywords here are "proper hairdresser". I assume she didn't go to one.

Was I Wrong To Leave A 1-Star Review For This Hair Dye Job? $140 And They Told Me It Was "Impossible" To Get The Dye Off My Neck, Forehead, And Ears
Without even trying and it would come off "eventually". I have a major event in a few days and I am busy scrubbing my head raw tonight.
My salon puts vaseline and/or a cotton band around the hairline. I also do this to dye my hair at home. With the Vaseline the dye won't stick to your skin 🤗
Hair conditioner works too if you don’t have Vaseline handy!
Load More Replies...A professional stylists and hairdresser would have had products to help get that dye off.
Or better yet, would’ve taken care to use Vaseline or something on her skin so that it wouldn’t dye her skin in the first place. Even as a teen dyeing my hair at home I knew to do that, because I’d read advice about how to do it — and that was pre-internet, relying on magazines.
Load More Replies...I’ve found micellar water gets some off too. I occasionally use facial astringent, as it has the alcohol but doesn’t smell as bad as straight rubbing alcohol. 😁
Load More Replies...Actually colour removes colour. That's why if you do it at home, a box dye will tell you to add water first, lather it around your scalp to get the colour off. Wet the dye a little and rub it into the colour around your face and neck (watch the eyes!) This is how we remove it at a salon!😃
Blue Dawn dish soap works really well! Lightly damp wash cloth and a couple of drops. Scrub a bit and all good.
Alternatively, you can confront the salon worker about what the heck just happened. No matter how upset you are, try to remain calm. Be as friendly and diplomatic as you can. Screaming and yelling at someone who’s trying to do the best they can (or has a poor understanding of style) is not going to make the situation any better. Instead, try to explain what you expected. Look for a path out of this disaster together with the stylist. Maybe they could even get some of their coworkers’ advice on how best to proceed.

However, if you’re feeling emotionally drained by this whole debacle, you could simply smile and pretend that everything is all right. Then, after you leave, either head to another salon to fix the fiasco, or get in touch with your friends to figure out what the heck you should do. It never feels good to throw away money and feel like you got utterly ripped off. But you should only confront the stylists if you feel comfortable doing so.

Yes, less washing, more oil, and that little bit of highlighted tint makes a huge difference when you’re trying to accentuate the individual curls. Good luck, baby girl.

NO F$&@ING WAY, would they have convinced me to change my review. That is ridiculous!
As you go through life, you’ll inevitably face embarrassment and failure. Developing emotional resilience, embracing those uncomfortable feelings, and moving past them is a useful skill to develop. No matter if we’re talking about beauty salon fails, bad days at work, or arguments with the people you love, you’re in control of how you react to these situations.
Often, we feel bad because things happen differently than we envisioned. Or hoped! Sky-high expectations can motivate us to strive to reach our goals (and, let’s be real, they’re fun to daydream about). However, they can set you up for disappointment. It’s better to set realistic expectations.
What I Asked For vs. What I Got
That t-shirt kinda makes it look like she did it herself 😅 but jokes aside that would make me cry if someone did this to me. These kind of hairstyles should be done by well known professionals or at least with credentials, someone you know who's a client or something. 😕 These things don't come cheap 🥺
OMG THIS HAPPENS TO ME TOO it’s not the hairdresser’s fault, Shes amazing it’s just my hair that doesn’t want to curl in.
My sympathies. I always wanted one of those perfect Cleopatra bobs as a teenager but didn't realize that a lot of the celebrities I saw sporting one were wearing wigs and didn't have to get through a school day with a hat jammed on their head.

Why do so many hairdressers cut bangs so short? I learned to cut my own hair as a teen and I was and am much happier. I'm almost 50.
I have straight hair and wear a single braid. How hard is that to cut? Harder than you'd imagine, apparently. I've been cutting my own hair for about 10 years because I refuse to pay people to do something I have to fix when I get home.

According to Verywell Mind, the most essential thing when it comes to getting out of the expectations versus reality trap is awareness. The first step is becoming aware of your own expectations. Try to think about where these expectations came from and how (un)realistic they were, to begin with. If your stylist genuinely messes up, it’s on them. But if you wanted VIP tier services from someone new to the business, then you’re in for a sad awakening.

Ah yes.. I never get my hair curled at a salon specifically for this reason. They can hide anything that way 🤷🏻♀️
I have curly hair and I make them straighten it for this reason
Load More Replies...If you’re ever disappointed by the results, sit down and have an open chat with yourself about what you truly value in life, and what makes you happy. Perhaps the situation isn’t as dire as you think it is. So long as you’re not constantly comparing yourself to other people (from friends and coworkers to e-celebs) and being grateful for all the things you do have in your life, you should be fine.
In the meantime, it can save you a ton of headaches if you’re able to spot poor stylists before you even sit down in their chairs. You should probably consider seeking another person’s services if the employee you’re talking to is rude and unprofessional, and is clearly disinterested in what you want or need. Similarly, if your stylist appears to be incredibly nervous, you may want to consider asking for their more composed colleague to take over.

Though everyone makes mistakes from time to time, it’s best to look at your stylist’s track record if you’ve worked with them before. If they’re clearly lacking the necessary skills, constantly botching up your requests, and are unwilling to apologize and improve, you should take your business elsewhere. Meanwhile, if they’re also gossiping about their other clients behind their backs, you might become their next target for criticism the moment another customer walks through the door.

Whats with the long strands, looks like it was done with a lawnmower
The bangs are off obviously but tbh with some styling she could make this work 🤷🏻♀️ the left is heavily styled and the right is straight out of bed by the looks of it..
Agree. The way her bangs are sitting looks air dried. I honestly think it's quite cute.

First of all they totally over-processed her hair and second of all it looks like the hair stylist took a weed whacker to it. A professional stylist will be frank with you and let you know if a certain cut or colour will not work. Also, I see that they are Fullmetal Alchemist fan.
How do you walk out of there without asking for a refund straight away?

Wasted $400 + Tip And Have Spent The Whole Day Crying
Paying for this is one thing... 400$ - wtf? But also tipping? For.. this???
I think this is after she washed it at home and used a shampoo with sulfate. That will strip the toner and turn your blonde hair brassy/orange.
I agree with this. I think she paid so much and tipped cuz when she left the salon it did look enough like the first photo.
Load More Replies...Also I conjecture that this is after a wash at home. No hairstylist would send you home without blow drying. That is indeed badly bleached, but it looks unstyled and there's no way they let her go with wet hair
Why tip? Honestly SPEAK UP! If you're at a salon and the job you got was bad, ask a more senior stylist or the owner if they can fix it... If they can't or won't that's when you NO TIP and leave your review. If you paid with a cc you can also dispute the charges! Show the CC company what you paid for vs what you got. Tips: research salons in your area and budget. Find ones who have been open for at least 5+ years, that are clean, organized, and decently decorated. If you want color, make sure the stylist has experience in color. If you want a specific cut, make sure they've done it before. You don't have to go to the cheapest place or the most expensive for a good cut and color. We women need to be encouraged to advocate for ourselves in situations like this. Don't be a Karen, but don't accept substandard treatment either.
Well the model picture has extensions. That hair is colored before it's sewn onto her head. So a style will never look like the pic unless you get extensions too. Her hair looks like it was dipped in battery acid.
Haircut Expectation vs. Reality. Paid $35 (Was Going To Get It Permed But Almost Nobody Does Perms In Our Area)
Stylist also burned my head with the hairdryer and it hurt for several hours.
No need to be condescending. Most of this country is rural or small town with few options and no swanky salons. You just gotta bring your inspiration pics and hope for the best. Really you gotta hunt for a good stylist and you sometimes find an awesome one at great clips. I've gotten really good cuts for $20 and really bad ones for $200.
Load More Replies...This is partially on OP. This cut only works for curly hair, so idk what they expected. Stylist sucks too. Any decent stylist should have just said no to it unless they also do perms.
I'm guessing they curled it temporarily in the salon and this is after they washed/brushed it at home.
Load More Replies...Well, off course it is going to look nothing like the model if you don't get it permed! Furthermore, who in their right mind things that a perm and cut like that would only cost $35.00?
You got off easy. If that hairdresser perms hair like she cuts hair, you would have gone home with your hair in a bag.
dosent excuse how bad the cut it, but the first photo is on very curly hair and the client has straight hair and without a perm that wasent possible... again tho, dosent make how bad the haircut is any better
You are living in a dream if you ever, ever thought this was possible with straight hair!!
At first, I was overjoyed to see that you did not have a chance to opt for any type of perm until you tried it at home for a few days with a curling iron to figure out your style. But then after seeing the cut, you REALLY would have benefited 100% buy having those curls. Please give it a try.

What I Asked For, Versus What I Got, And How I Fixed It
She has significantly less hair than the model. There's no way it looked that full.
This is Jayme Jo (the model above)... she has a YouTube channel that gives step by step guides on all her hair styles, which products she uses, and styling tools. Her videos have helped me tremendously with my hair
First of all this woman has less hair and her hair texture is much finer than the model in the photo. I actually don't think her perm looks that bad in the last photo after it relaxed. (Perms often make you looks like a freaking poodle or Shirley Temple before they relax.)
I don’t think that’s a perm. I think the left is natural curls styled by someone with no clue what they were doing so they kept brushing them. And the right bottom is after she (someone experienced with curly hair) redid it. And the picture on the right is actually a tighter curl than the one on the left. The one on the left is just frizzed out hair.
Load More Replies...She is trying. Give her that. At least she didn’t end up on Customer Wars on TV just losing her mind in the salon. She took actions in her own hands and moved on. Good for her.
I have spent my whole life, every 6 or 7 years, trying to get a perm on my baby fine, stick straight hair, and always ending up with a frizzy mess. They will tell me: "oh we have new perm methods now that work much better", but really nothing has changed since the "Toni" home perms my mom tried on me in the 60's. No one seems to be satisfied with the hair they have.

How much? I don;'t care how close it might have been, 700 dollars is ridiculous.
This is only halfway done. Hair is still wet and still at the salon.. we don't know the final results tbh. Some hairstyles take multiple steps.. went from red to blonde in 3 appointments, she warned me that it could look orange-ish for a while first but it was healthier for my hair. To do it in steps. It never looked completely awful so I was lucky I guess that she really knew what she was doing
And "what I asked for" is two different styles too.

"I had virigin hair" <--- that there is the problem dear! Her eyebrows are super dark. I know next to nothing about hairstyling but I do know you're not supposed to go from dark brown to blonde in a single session. Did the hairdresser not warn her? Did she not listen to the warning?
Seriously, when I decided to go platinum blonde, it took almost a year. Also knew a girl who wanted platinum blonde, so hair dresser I guess intended to do it all in one go, and the poor girl's hair (which had been gorgeous dark brown all the way down to her bum) ALL FELL OUT.

Load More Replies...I have virgin hair-- that's the problem right there. A professional stylist would know to never, ever take you from a dark brown to light blonde in a single session. Also, blonde hair, especially platinum (ice blonde) is extremely difficult to maintain as you get older. A gentle moisturizing shampoo is going to be that poor woman's best friend.

From A Local Facebook Page. Lady Went To The Salon. Brought In The Picture In The Left. Walked Out With The Picture On The Right
Looking at the picture on the right it looks like a cheap home dye job on mostly grey hair. There's no way a professional stylist did this.
A "professional" stylist might have, from what I've seen is this thread 😬

How Can I Be More Clear With A Stylist? This Is What I Asked For vs. What I Got
Again the internet strikes by making folks believe this can be their hair too. But like you said, it depends on the hair, the condition, and the experience of the stylist. And it will be EXPENSIVE. Be warned, if someone tells you they can do it for cheap, it will come out cheap.
Plus I don't think these are done in a single salon visit. Unless of course that visit is the entire day.

These styles are often hard to do and not everyone knows the specifics of thickness/structure of the clients hair + the root color or natural color of the client that all play into what dye to use, how to mix their dies to get the right result. There's so much that goes into such a style that People (including a lot of hairdressers don't realize) 😕 it's not just a paint job it's a chemistry job sometimes ☺️
My First Hair Salon Trip In Two Years Went Horribly. What I Asked For And What I Got
The internet during the pandemic started so many unrealistic expectations for people based on what the internet said was possible vs what was available
What are you saying? That it’s unrealistic to expect to look like the photo? If a hairdresser can’t do something, she should say she can’t, and not give the client something else entirely, as happened in this case.

ASAP and please start using a hair mask every 3-4 hair washes. When it gets fixed, the botched bleach will feel dry. That is why I suggest lots of moisture and the hair mask.

Once again, your hair is much shorter than the model. And much thinner. Wavy hair than reaches the shoulder blades nearly reaches the the waist when straightened. You very much lacked material here. The color is so different i hope it was not based on the inspiration pic, cause this would be a steal.
It takes multiple appointments to got from a dark brown to a party colour. Trying to do that it just one day will lead to over-processed hair that is at risk of falling out.

The model either has wavy hair herself or it's styled with (a ton of) products. If you've got fine, straight hair this will be the result with this cut after washing it.

Chunky highlights are coming back! But it just means those colorists lack training and experience. My colorist told me it takes a long time and lots of training to learn to do the shading/blended effect.

There used to be a product called Sun-In that would do this for you in the sun, just spray some strands and get sun kissed layers in your hair. Lemon juice was an alternative that gave you sun streaks, too. Spray a few strands with lemon at that resort - it's natural and it really works.

Terrible Experience With A New Stylist
I’m just needing to vent. Also hoping this can serve as a lesson to anyone trying a new stylist. It may be common sense but I was so tired last night that I failed at this miserably: Look at your hair closely before paying your stylist. I’m currently sobbing while taking out these horrible braids after spending 6 hours in the chair, 40 dollars on hair, and 210 to the stylist (she charged 190 and I gave a 20-dollar tip). This was done yesterday. You can see what I asked for versus what I got. The braids she put in are so lopsided and messy, I immediately burst into tears. I just moved to a new state and have been having trouble finding a stylist to do my braids so after finding someone who does my blowouts really well, I asked her if she can braid my hair as well and she said yes! She agreed to the style no problem but I wish she would have just told me the truth about her capabilities. It’s totally okay not to know how to do everything! It was really sketchy because looking back I’m realizing now that she purposely turned me away from the mirror and rushed me out when she was done. She finished at 11 pm so I thought she was just tired and I certainly was exhausted too. See the screenshots for the whole interaction. I’m glad for the partial refund but still so much time and money wasted. My self-esteem is shot. I’m extremely upset and insecure. Speak up for yourselves in the salon!
Help! I Just Want To Cry! Do I Let Her Fix It? What Would You Do?
Omg guys, I just want to cry! I went to a new hairdresser yesterday and she had really good reviews and she was really lovely and sweet but look what she did to my hair!
I've included a photo of what I wanted and what she did, you'll know which is which. When she was blow-drying my hair I was NOT smiling like I usually do when the hairdresser is blow-drying my hair at the end of an appointment.
And she said she wasn't happy with it and I started pointing out what I wasn't happy with and she said she can fix it but not today because she's worried about the damage to my hair. So she initially said next week, but I said I need to go out on the weekend and she said in two days.
Now you're all going to get angry over this next part but... I still paid her $350. I don't know why I know I shouldn't have but at the moment I gave her the benefit of the doubt and trusted she will fix it. Plus she was so nice and sweet and kind throughout the appt and she was so apologetic, I just didn't have the heart to get mad at her! I hate myself for that! She also said she would give me a free hair treatment which is an hour appointment.
When I got home I YouTubed what she did. At the start of my appointment, she said that a full head of highlights would cost $250, but because I wanted a balayage look she would have to tease it so it would cost $350. I don't know anything so I agreed. Then when I googled it, it's called easy highlights, then YouTube's it and there's no difference except you tease the top of the hair first! Why did that cost me an extra $100?
The color doesn't change gradually. There's an actual visible line. Not ok.

Went to the hairdresser, for the first time in 10 years. First time doing anything else than just cut. What My Girlfriend Wanted vs. What She Got
What I Asked For And What I Got
There are a multitude of reasons that these things don't work out, and I won't rule out lack of skill. First, the model in the photo was styled by a highly-skilled professional. A lot of influencers get free or cheap deals to promote those people. Second, they are nothing like you. I mean, your hair could be entirely different in its composition. I have thin hair and pointing to a photo of a model with thick, full hair isn't going to change mine. Third, the photo was altered, which, unfortunately, is the world we live in. It becomes nearly impossible to replicate. So if you go into your hairdresser, looking for a style that requires multiple steps that cost a lot of money, but for a bargain, and your hair composition is not the same and the photo your referring to is touched up, don't expect the thing! Again, these are examples of the worst cases and of course a lot of blame is on the stylist.
There is alot of added hair also to thicken it up too
Load More Replies...When it comes to hair, you shouldn't assume that you can get blondes from dark hair in one treatment. The professional should also make it clear to the client. likewise, if you want light pink hair, the journey is even longer.

I am totally shocked by a lot of these comments. These beauty salon treatments are abysmal. Worst I've ever seen. And then the ridiculous comments come back saying that the stylist did the best they could. I'd rather dye my own hair and have my hubs cut it at home. That way if it doesn't turn out I only have myself to blame.
In so many of these the hair looked dull and dry obviously from over processing.
