40 Hilariously-Creative Pet Names Shared By The “Petfinder Names” Twitter Page
Interview“Awww, look at the cute little floof! What’s its name?” We’ve all been overwhelmed with fuzzy feelings at some point in our lives when we see someone’s pet that’s too cute to be real. And we just can’t wait to find out more about them! But when we ask for their name, we expect something simple. Like Roger. Or Mr. Fluffy Meowington.
However, some owners want their pet names to be unconventional. Completely one-of-a-kind. With some secret meanings thrown in for good measure! And they’re so impressive, people can’t help but marvel at them. So much so that just a couple of short months ago, in April 2021, the ‘Petfinder Names’ project popped up on Twitter and it’s dedicated to showing off the most unique and bizarre pet names.
We’ve collected some of the best ones for you to enjoy, dear Pandas. So go on, scroll down for some inspiration and a good laugh or two. Let us know which ones you liked the most (remember, clicking the upvote button is like petting the animal) and we’d love to hear all about the unusual and creative names you’ve given to your own best buds! So don’t be shy—writeus a comment.
Jea, the 27-year-old genius behind the 'Petfinder Names' project, opened up to me about how the simple passion project captured Twitter users' hearts, the most unusual pet name they've ever heard, and how to get that noggin' joggin' and creatin' some unique pet names. They're also trying to find ways to use the account to help promote animals in need of homes and adoption. You'll find Bored Panda's full interview with Jea below, so be sure to read on!

In french this one would be Rorschat. (Chat means cat and the T is silent)
I'm sure this kitty will be an excellent fighter against evil and corruption.
I love the cat and the name but it can have a derogatory connotation.
Seems like he survived a fire and got the name Toast after it.
Load More Replies...That would be my name for that guy. "Mugshot! Come inside, kibble is ready!" 😁
Load More Replies...This cat looks like freshly out of prison. He(?) has seen things there's no word for.
I just saw Peter Rabbit 2. One of the characters looked just like this.
"I started this account as a silly little thing on the side. I spend so much time browsing Petfinder and started to see some hilarious names and I thought they would be fun to share!" Jea told Bored Panda that fun lies at the core of the entire project on Twitter. The attention the account got has exceeded all of Jea's wildest expectations.
"I figured I would get some followers and people who enjoyed it, but it has blown up exponentially! Within this last week, I believe the account has gained 60k+ followers, which is incredible. I love the messages and tags of people saying this is their new favorite account or that it has brought them some joy," Jea gushed about the incredibly positive feedback.
You tend to see this in companion pets of the elderly, as the owner becomes less mobile the pet also gets less exercise, couple that with loneliness, the owner starts treating the animal as a friend, almost human and feeds them the wrong foods!
Load More Replies...Everyone is angry about this little guy but you notice he’s up for adoption. Someone realized they couldn’t work with him anymore and surrendered him.
I saw that, too. Hope the one who adopt him will get him on a diet and give him healthy exercise. Good luck to Nugget
Load More Replies...There was a Jack Russell terrier near us, the old lady couldn't walk her, used to feed her Mars bars. When the lady went into a home (which took a long time because not many homes will let you take your dog) the carers loved the dog, fighting among themselves to walk her, and no more Mars bars. A good result for everyone.
Is "Chihuahua" some species of seal with thin legs I don't know about?
So true! Cats are the only species that domesticated themselves...they saw that being house pets was a sweet deal.
Load More Replies...How did people forget cats were domesticated because of their hunting skills? Without them no civilization could survive, because of all the rodents eating up the grains saved in the granaries. For a very long time no ship could sail without cats on deck because the rats would have eaten up all the food, spoiled the water and eventually ruined the ropes. Cats are far from freeloaders. Give them a chance and most of them would literally try to provide for you by bringing you food.
When I was a kid I fed a stray cat (Mom told me not to, but I did it anyway) that was hanging around our house - and he never left. He refused to come inside the house so we put a doghouse full of blankets on the front porch for him. I named him Freeloader but we called him Load for short. :)
If they introduced the cat to me by saying, "hi, this is free" I would steal the cat...
This is my favorite one - I wonder if he has met Tom Holland or survived an ice age?
According to the founder of 'Petfinder Names,' the most unusual name they've seen so far that they love is a cat by the name of Golfball Sized Hail. "But there are too many to count and I'm sure they'll just keep getting weirder!" they said.
"My best advice in finding a unique name would be to literally just start writing down random things you see or identify. for example, my nickname for my cat is Dumptruck, and I intend on naming my next pet Chainsaw."
Who hasn't met a velcro cat? You know, the kind of cat that if you pick the cat up while it's sitting on a cushion, the cushion comes along?
I have one that wants to be on my lap almost all day long. Now that's a velcro cat.
Load More Replies...Who hasn't had a kitten stuck to their leg like velcro. Other than people who have never had or been around one that is
Big Mac doesn't give a f*** what you call them. Just obey and bow down.
I had a kitty named Big Mac too! We named him that because he would attack our dog and McDonald's had a commercial at the time advertising a Big Mac Attack!
Aww, Mr. Frog was a feral (clipped ear). I had a clipped-ear former feral kitty for 16 years (he was about 3 when I got him). No one could believe he used to be feral...he never met a stranger and loved everyone.
There are generally two avenues for figuring out a name for your new pet! One approach (and my personal favorite, but don’t let that influence your opinion) is looking your pet in the eyes and using your gut and intuition to see what name fits them best. Sure, your brain might be saying ‘Leo,’ but your catto’s glittering green eyes might scream ‘Emperor Emerald III.’
The second approach is thinking about what you want the name to represent. Perhaps you want to express a certain aspect of your pet’s behavior. Or you’ve already come up with an ace idea for a name and you’re planning to stick it to your pet no matter how much it might contrast with what they’re actually like.
ROFL! I don't remember the last time the internet made me laugh so much.
It's kind of a tradition to give horses (especially racehorses) unusual names. Never really was sure where it came from, but it's pretty interesting.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, the most popular pet names in 2021 are still very simple and to-the-point. You could even say they’re unadventurous, though I personally like them. For instance, the top five names for puppies this year, according to Parade, are Luna, Charlie, Cooper, Bella, and Milo.
Meanwhile, the top cat names in 2021 are actually quite similar to the puppy ones, with two of them being the same. That just goes to show that dog and cat owners tend to think alike, even though they might not want to admit it. According to KittyCatter, the top five names are Oliver, Bella, Simba, Chloe, and Luna. Odds are that there’s someone in your life who’s got a cat with one of these names! They’re great. But they’re also a far cry from the fabulously unique monikers shared on Petfinder Names!
That name is me when you meet me vs me when You start asking if I’m okay
My guess: Because unnamed kittens arrive at the shelter in batches. So they name the whole nest after say species of fish, or of flowers, or here probably common fonts; then it's clear what which ones they're talking about, "are the Fishes inoculated yet? OK one is poorly? ... " . I'd like a kitten called Trebuchet, then.
Load More Replies...This looks like one of the pets from Austin Pets Alive, which for some reason has a plethora of amusing names and a habit of tacking seemingly random numbers on the end of some of them. Totally recommend clicking through their adoptables if you're looking for a chuckle.
Load More Replies...This is how they look when they are very very young. Plain white with blue eyes. ♥️
Load More Replies...They are siblings I expect. Wonder if Famine and Death are here too.
Load More Replies...Clearly the sibling of War. We've got two of the four chihuahua horsemen so far.
Nice Wilbur only seems nice in comparison to this criminal?
Load More Replies...I THOUGHT THEY WERE JOKING, GIVE ME THE KITTEN *Bonetrousle plays chaotically in the background*
Where's the "Serif?"? (Sure this kitten deserves a triple-barreled name just like TNR?)
On Neuroscientist's first day at home, they attempted Cranial Impact Therapy on their human in order to ensure their good behaviour. It didn't work.
I presume it's from injury because his eye looks a bit scarred too
Load More Replies...So sad. So many students and nobody could take him home.
Yeah, I think they got a little extreme when they tipped poor Pablo's ear after his neuter surgery.
Load More Replies...Those blue eyes! Rare for an adult cat but so beautiful with the white hair
Yes, let's call the cat after a massmurdering egocentrist. Hm, considering the amount of bird & rodent kills, it may be fair.
Just don't tell the Cali cartel where you're housing him. Also very high maintenance when it comes to housing.
Wouldn’t Van Gogh have been more appropriate—-though he IS a blank canvas?
My great-grandma had a cat named Lucifer. I assumed demon names weren't that uncommon for pets.
When I was a kid, a horse who lived in one of the neighbour's horse stalls had the name of satan. A pretty nice and friendly horse, he was ... I loved petting him and getting him carrots and stuff, as he'd look kinda surprised every time, but then you could see the excitement in his face about a carrot. I mean, I love carrots, too, but THAT much excitement ... must be some kind of devil's food or so...
When I was very young we had a beagle named Sinner. From the stories about his antics he lived up to his name!
I'm fostering a black cat (and her kittens) and we call her Mama Vampire.
War and Peace. I was expecting bigger. (War and Peace is a very long book).
They named their cat Hotdog … that’s a Weiner (what, no one saw that coming?)
Our golden retriever (R.I.P) loved to munch on grass (and sticks) but he never fully ate them. Grass/stick entered his mouth from the right side, and he spatted the munched grass/stick out from the left side.
Load More Replies...I can't! Please tell me that somewhere out there, there's a dog named vacuum cleaner!
We can only hope! And maybe the dog has a brother named steam iron!
Load More Replies...Well, possibly a Beagle walked by the mother once, so maaaaaaaaaaaaybe it's a Beagle-mix... But anyway, cute dog. Would take it! ;-)
Why is "Declawed - yes/no" even a subject still? This is animal cruelty.
In case they have an older cat who has been declawed. Plus in some places it's unfortunately still normal
Load More Replies...No cat should weigh 13lbs except possibly a Main jesus christ
Maine C**n. There's no cat breed called Jesus Christ.
Load More Replies...The facial features (eyes/bridge of nose) look similar to a bull terrier's...
A little bit, yes. But it could be due to not having pigment around the eyes. Our BorderCollie-mix (we owned the father, so no question about the heritage) had one unpigmented eye and some people thought he was a Bullterrier mix, too. Not ruling it out, though
Load More Replies...Sounds like me and my brother.... of course HE is the impossible!
Load More Replies...That’s a meowulous name. When he/she gets adopted, is their name changed to Definite?
It’s ok, kittens usually look like their collars are too tight because of how fuzzy they are! (I think😬)
Load More Replies...We sometimes call my cat Porkchop, because according to her previous owners she once stole a porkchop from a table.
That evil smirk tho.. are you sure the name isn't coincidence?
also, birds are worse than cats, for 'only somewhat inaccurate, but hilarious stereotypes for pets.'
Load More Replies...I had a conure called Connor. He was knowen for escaping a locked cage and biting our ears. He loved my dad though, and all of us. I think Connor thought that pecking was how you show that you love someone.
I saved this notification from a few years ago :) picklechee...fbb644.jpg
The negative names are a bummer. Why name a pet something with such a bad connotation? It's not funny - it just sets a precedent for abusive behavior from a human later.
When your parents say “Don’t you go bringing That Girl home again!” But little do they know…
Short Hair!! I have a medium Hair cat and three long haired cats as well as four SHORT HAIRED g irls and this cat looks exactly like my short haired furbabies.
If they had a baby it would be named...wait for it...Spork!
Load More Replies...A Deadpool reference --- they included the (old, forgotten) comic character "Negasonic Teenage Warhead" only because she had such a ridiculously stupid name.
Could also be a reference to the candy Warheads.
Load More Replies..."So how do you spend your weekends?" "Oh you know, Church." --Me pretending to be sanctimonious instead of a crazy cat person. =)
♫ I don't wanna be buried in a pet cemetery, I don't want to live my life again ♫
I actually had a cat named Church, that was the name of the Maine C**n in Pet Cemetery.
That is the name of a cat that has been made immortal in a book series I'm reading!!! It's AWESOME!
There are clickbait articles about people’s atrocious spelling that include variations of this.
Load More Replies...Better than Italic! Not a font, but a class of fonts... maybe the mum of the kittens?
Well, the problem is that the breed, Domestic Shorthair, fairly regularly produce kittens that grow up to be Floofy (long hair...)...
Load More Replies...Yes, probably larger litter than expected. I'd go for Trebuchet, with fontnames, as its similarly destructive as kittens. "Harlow Solid" would have been better.
Load More Replies...we are the Killer Bees! (In case you’re unfamiliar: https://snl.fandom.com/wiki/January_10,_1976#:~:text=The%20killer%20bees%20are%20in%20search%20of%20pollen%2C,out%20while%20operating%20the%20controls%20under%20the%20influence.)
I have a dog named Kitty and a Cat named Puppy. We also have 4 other cats: Gemini, Flea, Bleü and Percy, as well as 2 other dogs named Diesel and Cookie. Rabbit named Boo, lizards named Tonk, Grogu, and Mouse, also 2 frogs named A Frog Has No Name and Jabba, and a turtle named Squirtle and a Hedgehog named Pickles. I gotta zoo in my house!
I had a pet rat once who escaped on the way home from the breeder and nearly gave me a goddamn conniption before I found him just chilling by the side of the road (he had jumped off the back of my bicycle after getting out of the box I put him in). I named him The Heart Attack Rat.
(Incredibly, even after pulling that stunt he was unhurt beyond a small nick on his hind leg).
Load More Replies...I saw this and my brain was like "Spleens! Your time has come! Get out of the computer and get over here!"
That’s Very funny! Meow Spleen!! Take care!! 🐈⬛😻
Load More Replies...My daughter named our kitten (takes a deep breath) Duchess Matilda Harmony Lux Diamond.
My sister adopted a rabbit once who she named Monty after Monty Python. I insisted on calling him Bunnydict Thumperbatch instead. Sister was not amused.
The adorable coda to that story: She passed Bunnydict on to a friend with a small daughter, and as this was at Easter the kid decided her new pet was the Easter Bunny! I'm told he was loved and spoilt rotten for the rest of his life. 🥰
Load More Replies...My parents when they were young always named their dogs after alcohol. We had a Bourbons (burs), Pisco, Arak and Morgan (for the rum Capitan M.).
When my mom was younger she had 2 brother cats whose names were Scotch and Soda.
Load More Replies...I have a Pretzel and a Grape. It's what happens when you let a 5 year old name the new kittens.
My 4 year old self named my dog Punkin and I made birthday on Valentine's Day. No idea how the 2 were connected since I found her during the summertime.
Load More Replies...I have a kitten named Dishes because we had to keep giving her a bath in the sink 😂
My husband had a cat named Toejam when I met him. Because he was always underfoot! Best. Cat. Ever. RIP, Toejam we know you're waiting for us.
