While ignoring the 99% of the bill that's trash? That's why riders on bills are bullshit and need to ne prohibited. This is a tactic both sides use and it's disgusting. They'll write a bill they know will never pass, then add in something like this that's completely unrelated, so if the other side rejects it because the content is garbage, they look like assholes because the other party says omg how can they reject a bill with (insert unrelated item here) in it? They're the devil. And round and round we go. People should never agree to back things like this. If Biden genuinely cared, he could cap it without putting in the bill. Instead, people will die because he's pathetically using insulin as leverage in a bill that has no chance of passing.

$1300??? That's outrageous! Pathology is free in Australia, except for the really obscure tests. And even then, the obscure ones are partly funded by federal health so you only end up paying $50 or so.

Well, we do have enough but our idiot leaders would rather us pay more to get the same product elsewhere in the world so we can claim we're saving the planet from what they say it needs to be saved from when in fact the effect they say we need to be concerned about is still happening but with greater effect due to increased energy needs to transport long distances risk to wildlife and our water sources by transporting over the ocean. o those things of concern. somewhere else and still having that concerned effect on the world. I wonder how many other countries lack commonsense on the same level USA does? It's inhumane and attacked as trying to starve people back to work to expect them to take one of millions of jobs available to do what a job is intended to do, support oneself but perfectly ok to starve working people by trying to force them out of their perfectly working car and into high cost electric cars with high fuel costs, limited supply and restrictions and regulations.

This is why representation is so important. Asian celebrities frequently tweet about white people getting them confused. (See Priyanka Chopra and Jameela Jamil; Aziz Ansari and Hasan Minhaj; etc.) More representation would fix this. More representation of different languages would also fix folks lumping all Asian languages together and, hopefully, fix the racist notion that all people who speak a certain language are bad in the first place.

I love listening to people speak other languages. I always butt in as I'm leaving and tell them how beautiful their language is. And say 'thank you' in it if I know how. I had two college students teach me several words in Farsi once. And laugh at my accent. I loved that I could make them laugh! سپاسگزارم

I feel like I've seen this before, either here or elsewhere. Personally, I would not be able to tell the difference between many languages, simply because I'm not really exposed to many. I have nothing against people of different...well anything really, but if someone asked me "what is he speaking?", I would likely have no clue. I get that this is targeted at people who hear a different language and immediately their head goes up their a**e, just saying that not knowing or recognizing a language in itself is not racist.

Americans yell "Speak English" if they hear you talking in any language but English. All they know is that what you said wasn't American English. It's quite rare that Americans will take the time to speak your native language. Too much work to them despite the American slogan being patriotically said like the gospel "hard work pays off". ( It's a lie no one wants to face) Hell they even tell English (British) people to speak English.

Corona Parties are a thing in America too. It was really popular in Florida during the height of the pandemic. I live in Georgia, just north of Florida. People drive through Georgia when they visit Florida for Spring Break (and Corona Parties). Those idiots flooded our hospitals after their vacations. It got so bad that we had to restrict travel at the state line. It was a mess. I hate people.

I've been so ill recently, worst cough of my life, had zero voice for over a week now, been tested time and time again and it's not the 'Rona but I'd hate to pass this onto any one else, it's horrific - so given that I've been wearing masks even at home around my kids and if anyone visits just to be safe and in the hopes no-one has it for Xmas. I admit before corona I'd not have considered wearing a mask but now it feels like a no brainier - although it does mean I don't have an excuse to slink off to bed and hide as soon as my husband gets home from work - I'll definitely be more likely to wear masks around flu season for the future

@Got Myself 4 Dwarves. I have gotten sick with something that felt like influenza twice since the pandemic started. I tested negative for Covid, and flu, both times (got tested multiple times because I was paranoid about a false-negative). Whatever it was, I didn't want to spread it. You definitely have an excuse to slink off to bed, even if it isn't the Rona; when you are sick, you are sick. Get some rest.

Not when there are alternate production methods available. Companies pollute producing what we buy yes, but how much they pollute through that process is something they have some measure of control over. Take our power grid here in my country for example, a huge chunk of pollution comes from burning coal to power the country, but we have frankly excessive amounts of sunlight throughout the entire year and some exceptionally windy cities, not to mention a large coastline. If the electricity companies invested in greener energy they'd STILL be able to supply the service we need while reducing their carbon emissions significantly.

Except these big companies also promote and advertise to the public behaviors that are harmful for the environment. They use manipulation and half truths to make purchasing their products seem like a good thing. They encourage people to throw away or recycle (which isn't always really beneficial depending on the carbon footprint of the recycling process) rather than reusing, so they can sell more product. They promote "upgrading" to the lastest and greatest. If the psychology of advertising were not highly effective, companies wouldn't use it. Should we consume less? Yes. But these companies continually put profit above environment and human lives. These companies make deals with governments to be granted exceptions. They use every means necessary, including employing studies on how to market to improve sales, to convince the public to continue harmful purchasing behaviors. They also need to be held accountable.

In the defense of viruses, they are also simply trying to spread/survive (if you consider them actually alive. There is some disagreement on that). Killing the host quickly doesn't give much chance for the virus to spread. That lingering infection seems to be the way to go. I think I've thought too much about this.

I know plastic has made mass production easier, and paper/cardboard production causes its own problems, but I really hate that plastic has been in use for what, 100-150 years? So much dependence and damage done in such a short time. Mass production of throwaway goods(and the profit from it) makes it hard to go back, but it was not that long ago we did not need plastic at all. If we used some older packaging methods combined with modern compostables like above, maybe we can keep our lifestyles kinda, and stop the permanent damage? It's wishful thinking I know, and I'm just riffing ignorantly

It's one possible source out of many. I feel like we could produce biodegradable plastics in different regions by using plants that are easily grown there. Plastics can be made from many, MANY different plants, even algae. Corporations just aren't interested, because setting it all up would cost them too much money...

The type of cactus she's holding is very very easy to grow here in SoCal. They produce new paddles fairly quickly too. Minimal water needs are another bonus.

We already have biodegradable plastic bags and they're routinely used for dog poo or food/compost waste at home all over Europe. However, the bags are usually quite thin and flimsy, so not any good to replace plastic shopping bags (which could be replaces with reusable fabric once, though).

Reminds me of how I was thinking earlier about see-through cardboard. Should definitely be a thing. Producers use plastic coverings on products because it protects it and consumers can see what they are buying. If we had clear cardboard, then consumers could still see the product and it would be protective but it would also be recyclable. I feel like that would be a good invention.

I've had similar experiences in the past. People who REALLY shouldn't be attempting any sort of counselling volunteer for jobs like that. Luckily they seem to have improved in recent years and are now a lot more empathetic. Sometimes you just need to talk through a crisis with someone.

When I was at my lowest low... the thought of All my animals being separated or going back to shelters where I saved them from or being dumped on the street because my family sucks.. was enough to make me reconsider suicide. I still have bad days but then I look at all my rescue animals and I remember how all of us are a team who has saved eachother, it reminds me that if I don't keep up my end of the bargain.. the last thing they're going to remember of me is being betrayed after only knowing trust and love. Then I'm reminded of all the good times and all the love I get and give to/from them and I refuse to leave this earth hurting the only beings who have never hurt me. I know that's kind of morbid.. but it's what saved me. If you're someone who is struggling, you should consider getting an animal.. the earth is a better place with you in it.. and it's also an easier place to live when you have unconditional love. Which is something we all deserve. Especially you. Don't give up!

And the fact that most of the have probably never had to do their own shopping, errands, etc. There should be a clause that in order to hold a Congressional position you have to pass a "What Real Life is Like" test. Included would be questions about health care, day care, costs of products and services, etc. I'm 70, and my view is that my generation has done enough damage. The future should not be ours to determine, it belongs the the next and future generations and it's up to them. And I do hope them luck!

Completely agree. Why are we allowing people to make decisions for our next 50 years or so based on their experiences from that last 50 years? It's one of the reasons why our progress is so slow. And to John Baker, I'm fairly sure Catherine means that they are more in tune to the costs for struggling citizens and students. By the time one is 70 (recent age range of our presidents) they don't often sympathize very well with a young, struggling college student or worker. Obviously she didn't mean that once you get past 50 you don't buy things anymore. Your response was just sarcastic and contributed nothing. 🤷

This is about representation in congress. Going off of your listed years, there are currently 20 Gen Xers in the Senate (making up 20% of reps) and 145 Gen Xers in the House of Representatives. For comparison, there's currently 1 Millennial in the Senate (making up 1% of reps) and 31 in the House. I hear a lot of Gen Xers complain about not being included in conversations, but you ARE pretty accurately represented here. Millenials, on the other hand, are not.

The alternative would be to do what we should have done years ago, declare the Millenial generation a "mulligan", and stop allowing them to influence anything. And I mean AN-Y-THING. We just skip them. They don''t get to vote, they only get minimum wage, and absolutely ZERO assistance from the government (either state or federal) to pay rent/healthcare/groceries. Eventually, the know will untie itself, and we can move on to a non-mistake generation.

I spent two weeks in hospital for heart issues. I had a multitude of diagnostic scans, blood tests, etc, etc. My bill was $0 (zero). The USA is a scary place financially (on so many levels). 😲

Free hospital parking in Scotland - turned out it was more expensive to have the machines to pay, maintain them, have staff to monitor the car parks etc than it was just to let folk park - so zero charges for the hospital stay and zero to go visit.

It’s worse for patients who have strokes or hip fractures. When they discharge from the hospital they need help. But every family member they have as either just as elderly is them or they work full-time to make ends meet. So no one is able to take care of grandma or grandpa and they have to go to a nursing home. In order to qualify for financial assistance for a nursing home grandma or grandpa has to be poor. So they have to open the valve on their savings account and spend it all, which disappears in a matter of days at a nursing home. Life savings wiped out in a matter of days. Only then do they get the full-time care they need.

Chronic health problems here. Our deductible is THOUSANDS per year PLUS high monthly premiums. I literally fly to South Africa when I need expensive tests and treatment, because even in PRIVATE care there it is cheaper to play for a roundtrip ticket, lodging, and some of the BEST doctors on the planet. (Well thanks to the maskholes and anti-vaxxers I'm currently just trying to wait it out rather than pay an arm and leg here.) We are so broken it's ridiculous.

Live in the Netherlands, chronically ill as well. My MS medication alone is over €20k, which I only pay €385/year on top of my insurance. To make it even better, due to low income I'm getting €98/month compensation by the government. All other examinations, tests and appointments all are paid for. USA-wise, I'll be bankrupt and the medication will be $100k/knowing they can make huge amounts of money on people depending on their medications...

Let me offer an alternate viewpoint. As a former federal employee who became disabled after a work injury, my primary insurance is Medicare. My secondary insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield Federal Employee Program. I had a heart attack in 2019. I've not gotten a single bill to this day...and neither would a Congressperson. They deny the general population the same medical coverage they themselves enjoy, which is entitlement at its finest.

I posted this on another item, but just FYI. The Build Back Better bill is currently in the U.S. Senate. It has a provision in it that would return the cap on insulin prices to $35. That price cap would have a major impact on LOTS of people. If your senator isn't already in support of the bill, do everything you can do to influence them to support it. It's important.

On 2 meds that cost $80,000 a month. Medicaid covers it. I can now lead a normal healthy life with meds. If i go back to work, insurance will not cover it. I will need to make one million dollars after taxes a year to cover the meds that will leave about 40 grand left as a annual salary.

Medical tourism is a real thing my friend. I can fly to Italy and live for a month, have knee replacement and recuperate there for a YEAR before flying back for less than the price of knee replacement here. That's not even dipping into Italy's free healthcare... that's paying full price there. Dental tourism is now a common practice for Americans. Go on holiday and have a root canal for less than the price of the procedure here.

We had a dog that became diabetic at 1 1/2 years old, and we were able to keep her alive and healthy on insulin for 9 1/2 more years. If insulin prices then had been what they are now, we couldn't have kept her alive all those years.

That's unbelievable. I'm a diabetic type 1, live in Poland (one of the poorest countries in the middle Europe) and the most expensive insulin I take is Tresiba; I pay about 25$ for a pack of 5 viols. Since I take about 14 units per day, I use the whole pack in about 3.5 months. Other insulins are cheaper, about 2$ for 10 viols. (Each containing 300 units) The way diabetics are treated in US is insane.

I was at my primary doctor's office with abdominal pain that had been getting worse and worse all day, and MY DOCTOR called an ambulance because she said I had to go to the ER and she didn't want me to drive the mile between her office and the ER. It cost me $2200 (which wasn't as disastrous for me as it would be for a lot of people). But five years later, the ambulance I called when I broke my leg cost me nothing, I think insurances decide whether to pay or not according to the diagnosis.

I have a broken tooth AND dental insurance. Still need to drum up about $2000 to have it repaired. It has been broken now several months. The VP of my company broke a tooth right in front and couldn't afford to fix it for several months. He had to make a promotional video for the company with one busted front tooth.

Quite amusing but too true. As an exchange medical student I asked what the hold up was for my elective C/S patient was. I was told that everything was put back because the husband of the heavily bleeding woman with a miscarriage had not yet got back from the bank. As the bleeding woman took precedence over elective surgery she was slotted in before my patient. However, had her bleeding been heavier she would have bled out by the time her husband obtained the money to pay for her surgery.

U.S. tale of the ER. Was in the ER one day because of severe abdominal pain. Hours in waiting room and then hours in one of the actual ER treatment rooms. Somebody always comes in with a wheel-in tray and asks how you're going to pay the deductible and if you want to pay something right then and there. Young boy (about 3) came in screaming and crying. Broken arm, perhaps. He had 2 older brothers there who attempted to entertain him and got him calmed down. A little while later he was crying again and I overheard they were wheeling him out to an ambulance to take him to the county hospital. I knew at that point his parents had no insurance. He was sent from that hospital to county because county takes everybody. The huge hospital that I was in claims to be non profit.

It's not the age difference that matters to me. There are beautiful couples madly in love with each other who are more compatible even with a big age gap than those who don't have much of an age gap. @Loty Amazon's own ads say $15/hr, not $18, The ads ALSO say only for full time, permanent employees. So that wage doesn't apply to their contractors, such as the ones driving delivery vehicles, or to their seasonal employees, or to their part time employees filling the warehouses (because they hire as few fulltime as possible, on purpose, to avoid having to provide any benefits).

I don't think you understand what communism is. Communism is a highly theoretical utopy that was never achieved. Many of the states we call communist today didn't even call themselves communist, because they knew they did not achieve it yet. The GDR, for example, strictly called itself socialist. It was not even that, though. However, I do think it would be absolutely possible to achieve a form of working socialism in a democratic country.

But I realized he needed an ambulance so they could start medical intervention ASAP. thats so cruel though, my mother did the same thing except she showed me this pic of some seriously scary woman (she looked like something out of the ring) and told me that if I went anywhere near her phone that lady would come and eat me, I couldn't sleep for like a month and was terrified of being anywhere near her phone. I went to a birthday party where the mom told us kids to stay out of the attic because "Chucky is up there." I was absolutely terrified of Chucky at the time so I ran home screaming. They came to my house and apologized to try and get me to come back. Turns out the presents were in the attic and she didn't want us getting in to them.

And Boomers (real Boomers) worked for 40+ years and some had to retire. Social Security doesn't pay enough to survive and investments/savings were attempted, but not sufficient to make it for long. Am grateful I was able to buy a house many years ago which is still not paid off. Likely will have to sell eventually though that's not what I want. Helped my child and continue to do so when I can because they are working their butt off and struggling. Will get a part-time job but I can only earn so much (early retirement) or the IRS takes $1 of every $2 that we make over their limit. Not yet eligible for Medicare and my private insurance is costly. Never thought it would be this difficult.
