I've had two kitties live to 18, one to19 so far, and I give them spring water and fountains. The water where I live is very hard and awful tasting. They were all feral, so they were at risk for kidney problems.

Welsh Folklore Says That Blacks Cats Bring Good Luck To A Home

Britain and Ireland also consider them good luck. The gene that makes them black also protects them from some diseases. Scientifically, they're less likely to become sick. That's one reason why I PURRposely chose my MR.🦞 over the others.

Many animals can "feel" earthquakes. I imagine there must be changes in the "energy", as if a storm was forming, because of the enormous pressure inside the earth. Animals can hear sounds we can't, and there must be very strange sounds before an earthquake. In my area there have been several. Even if they are not very strong the noise is terrifying.

Is he really big? The box needs to be AT LEAST 1½times as long as them. Is he long-haired? Some cats hate the way litter feels touching it (it tickles their bums). Is he declawed? Clay litter is torture after vets cut off their toes down to the 1st knuckle. Is the litter over 2"/5cm deep? Most cats dislike that.

Bored Panda got in touch with Applied Animal Behaviourist (ACAAB) Julie Posluns of CatSchool.co. CatSchool.co hosts online courses, tools and tutorial videos for easy and fun cat training, not only empowering cat lovers to train their feline friends themselves, but also providing opportunities and activities that allow the two to connect on a deeper level.

We've asked Julie why she thinks cats make such great pets, and she explained that they meet all the criteria that potential owners are often looking for in a pet:

"They have big personalities in small packages and adapt well to our lifestyle. People are attracted to their 'cute' features—their soft fur, sweet faces, and comforting purrs make us want to nurture them. But since cats retain much of their wildness, they captivate us with their intelligence and independent spirit. Sharing our homes with them is amusing, entertaining, and conveniently also makes for great content on social media."

What other cat would run to the door to greet the very few visitors we get? She's too isolated, and there's not really anything I can do about it. She's getting spayed this month, though, and after that, I'll be looking into at least getting her a pet. She loves watching the Pet Collective channel on TV.

Unsinkable Sam was also named Oscar (or Oskar bc he was German) & was a tuxedo cat named after the International Code of Signals term for "man Overboard" by some of the sailors that rescued him, after the 1st downing, w/o knowing his previous name. How apropos is that? He was employed by the Kriegsmarine Royal Navy and lived to be ≈15yrs old.

But, getting a cat for the sake of being able to post pics on Instagram should never be the sole purpose of a feline companion at home. Like any other pet, cat companionship is rewarding, but it can also be challenging, as elaborated Julie:

"The goal is to keep our precious pets safe, so having indoor-only cats is becoming more mainstream. However, finding ways to meet an indoor cat's need for exercise and enrichment can be challenging. Playtime, food puzzles and clicker training are a few ways to burn an indoor cat's energy."

Besides this, folks should consider a number of other crucial factors before adopting a cat. At the very least, there's the financial strain of all the various cat foods and carriers and toys you'll need to get and vet visits you'll have to go to. But there's also understanding that you can't go vacationing without a cat-sitter. And, last, but not least, you will have to adapt to a life with a cat as much as the cat will have to adapt to you—so if the little furry friend decides it wants to have an intense jog around your flat 800 times at 3AM, brace yourself.

I was totally snubbed by my cat the other day. I moved on my bed and I thought I kicked him off. When I indicated he could come back, he intentionally turned his head away and I've never seen his nose go higher. Luckily I was forgiven when he insisted on sniggle time.

I adore my cat but I have serious doubts about this fact. Cats in general just aren't as smart as dogs, they don't follow a pointing finger for example (dogs are the only species in the world that do this), or think multiple steps in advance. Citation most definitely needed.

Cats Might Seek Out Boxes In Order To Cope With Stress

If you're trying to desensitize your cat to car rides, having a clean, empty vehicle will be detrimental for this exact reason. Fill the back seat up and let them hang out there instead.

    TheAnimalLady

If you want cats to become comfortable in vehicles, you have to be very patient and desensitize them according to THEIR own timetable. Start by giving positive reinforcement for just being near &/or looking at it. When you first put them inside, DO NOT start the car!!! Play, treat, love...the whole time, no discipline or punishment EVER. Make sure things you don't want touched are put away. Feed meals there, just hang out when you're going to be reading or scrolling online anyway. When you do start the car w/them in it, no radio or air vents/etc. Don't go anywhere. Just turn it on for a few seconds, then off. Don't make a big deal about it. Wait for them to be calm then do it again. Gradually lengthen how long and how often. Do the same when you start to move the car. Pull forward a couple feet, then back & turn off. Wait for calm, repeat. Always end on a calm upnote.

Siamese Kitten Fur Color Changes Depending On Body Temperature

    Beautiful Siamese kitten

Siamese cats have an albino gene that activates when their body temperature increases above 30°C. As a result, if a Siamese kitten lives in a hot environment, the fur will remain light instead of turning into the characteristic darker coat.

They also keep the mosquitoes under control by strictly preventing any water from being able to pool up & stagnate. From the architecture to the ditches, it keeps it moving. And they spray liquid garlic, not enough for us to smell but it repels pests. They should also put planters of mint around.

There's around 100 kinds of birds there, and various other small animals. They're fed mainly by donations from the people of Japan who believe feeding cats brings good fortune and health. And with no vet on the island, they've become quite unhealthy. And inbred, which has caused most of them to have unnaturally short tails.

but how can we be so sure they aren't just using their superpower of selective hearing? (jk, if this is true, its interesting, but kind of sad. I wonder why that is, is there something that went wrong with people trying to breed them for aesthetic, because that wouldnt surprise me :/)

    Lakota Wolf

It's not really due to overbreeding/aesthetics breeding. It's because pigmentation is tied to hearing, genetically speaking. "A major gene that causes a cat to have a white coat is a dominant masking gene, an allele of KIT which suppresses pigmentation and hearing. The cat would have an underlying coat color and pattern, but when the dominant white gene is present, that pattern will not be expressed, and the cat will be deaf. A cat that is homozygous (WW) or heterozygous (Ww) for this gene will have a white coat despite the underlying pattern/color." So, in this case, the genes for white masking and the genes for hearing are tied together. When one is present, hearing can be affected. Humans have a version of this called Waardenburg syndrome.

In general, about 20% of White cats with non-blue eyes are deaf. ≈40% of those with one blue eye are deaf. ≈75% if both are blue. Many are deaf only in one ear. Assuming white cats have hearing issues is a thoughtful way to be.

I had a white cat once with yellow eyes who was deaf. He would sit there and meow really weirdly and wouldn't react to any noises, but he would respond if you stomped your foot and made a vibration.

Now, you'd think that you can't train a cat—remember, a cat can recognize your voice, but more often than not it will ignore it because it supposedly has a higher level of sentience than humans do and you ain't the boss of me. Probably. But just like dogs, it is possible, and Julie elaborates on this:

"Cats are highly trainable, and training will change your relationship, allowing you to take better care of your cat and have a stronger bond. Whether using carrier training to reduce your cat's stress with vet visits or improving your cat's comfort with nail trims, your cat can learn to be a cooperative partner in their care. Training is also an excellent form of feline enrichment; for example, teaching your cat to wear a harness and walk on a leash can be a perfect way to allow them to explore the outside world safely."

Oscar The Cat Appeared To Be Able To Predict The Imminent Death Of Terminally Ill Patients

There may also be an odor that people on the brink of death may emit. It’s possible humans can’t detect it, but cats—-or at least some cats—-can. I mean, if animals can detect the odor of cancer, which humans also can’t smell, it doesn’t seem impossible they could also detect the odor of imminent death.

There are signs of impending death that physically shows on dying patients that caregivers and nurses look out for in their last moments. This is not different from how Oscar can predict death perhaps his senses are more sensitive than us humans. However, I believe he was chosen to keep company to both the sick and the dying so they will feel less lonely. A lot die all alone even in the hospitals.

Scientists Still Don't Fully Understand How Cats Generate And Control Purring

I feel like this one needs context. For comparison, dogs have about 1,700, and humans can have *10,000*. So, really, cats have a miniscule amount (and I've read that's precisely why they can be such picky eaters; it's harder for them to taste if something is safe or not).

    TheAnimalLady

They can also be "picky" if they weren't offered a variety of foods when very young or if they're having trouble breathing bc if animals can't smell their food they're less likely to eat it.

Most Adult Cats Are Lactose Intolerant

It can cause nausea, bloating, cramps, vomiting and diarrhea. And is one cause of those mystery stains behind the couch and in your closet. Animals tend to hide their pain and illness due to their "Survival of the Fittest" mentality. Cats bury the evidence. Sitting in a corner and staring at the wall also means that they're probably not feeling well.

Some cats do like a drop of milk or cream once in a while as a treat, just don’t overdo it. Our gray cat, Bazzy, preferred half and half—-milk was too thin and cream was too think, but half and half was just right. We adopted Bazzy when he was 9 weeks old, and he lived to the ripe old age of 19 1/2 years, and never had any gastrointestinal distress from the occasional drop of half and half.

From what I've read, the Egyptians, in general, didn't worship animals. They saw them as representative of the divine aspects of their gods. They appreciated their rodent, snake & scorpion hunting prowess, of course. And some believed that they'd be able to inhabit the cat's body in the afterlife. I still don't think that they should've killed the cats.

Mau owner here: these are the “proto cats” of our domesticated kitties of today. They were used to hunt rodents in the fields and around homes and domesticated themselves on their own terms. I adopted my Mau at the shelter for $35 when she was too little to know what she was. She had probably gotten free from a breeder but had health issues which had to be nurses for about two full months. Now she’s a wild child and helps me find spiders around the home. She chirps and clicks, too.

Glad to hear that you aren't choosing strictly for color. Unless you're getting a black cat bc people are prejudiced against them and they don't get adopted as easily. Which I find ironic bc the gene that makes them black also protects them from some diseases, making them scientifically healthier. Two reasons why I chose my Mr. Lobster. Btw, male calicos ALWAYS have health problems, which usually lead to cognitive & behavioral issues. Please research a bit before you get one.

Cute😻 but tuna (esp albacore) is actually not healthy for cats, too much mercury. I blame the TV & movie industry for "teaching" people so many dangerous fallacies about animals. Like dogs & bones (most can cause a slow, tortured death from a pierced bowel and internal bleeding) and cats & milk (shown in this article).

Cat Hair Helped Solve A Murder Case

    White cat lying

Shirley A. Duguay, who lived on Prince Edward Island, Canada, and owned a white cat went missing from her home. The police believed that Douglas Beamish, the father of Duguay’s three children, had killed her. When they examined Beamish’s jacket, they found it was covered in Duguay’s blood and white cat hair. This evidence was strong enough to convince a jury that Beamish was guilty of murder.

That's a simplistic way of describing it. "This evidence" had to be "DNA fingerprinted". So did Snowball (the cat living in the home with Beamish whose fur was on the jacket that he said wasn't his) and other cats from all over the island (to rule them out as many of the cats were related). This case set the legal precedent for animals to be used in court cases.

Because Beamish denied that coat was his. The cat lived at his home. The cat fur tied the coat to him.

Cats Have A Special Nasal Organ Called Jacobson’s Organ That Detects Specific Chemicals

A cat sniffs a plastic box of oats

Jacobson’s organ’s odor receptors do not respond to ordinary smells. The receptors detect chemical substances with no odor.

The Vomeronasal Organ is in the nasal cavity and opens into the roof of the mouth. It's involved with the Flehman response, where animals curl back their upper lip and expose their teeth, inhale (w/nostrils usually closed) and hold still for a bit. Often the neck is stretched out and the head held high. It's triggered by interesting sights &/or smells, especially in relation to reproduction.

The way they utilize it is the folds in their noses hold scent, and they open their mouths to allow the scent to circulate around the back of their palette where the organ is located. Which is why you sometimes see cats rear back with their mouths open to take in a scent.

80% Of Orange Tabby Cats Are Male

    Portrait of orange tabby cat

The color of a cat’s coat is often linked to the X chromosome. As females have two X chromosomes and males have an X and a Y chromosome, male cats only need to inherit the orange gene from their mothers to be ginger-colored. This means that male cats are more likely to pass on this trait to their offspring.

    TheAnimalLady
    Community Member
2 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

For length: from tip of the nose to the base of the tail. You don't include the tail's length. For height: we measure most animals at the withers with all feet firmly on the ground (hooves trimmed if applicable).

We had a polydactyl tom cat show up on our farm when I was a kid. For years afterwards, we kept having cats with more and more toes, since the different lines were breeding with each other. Like, up to nine on each paw. One year, my mom noticed that one batch of kittens was born with crooked legs, so we rounded up all the cats and got them fixed. This was way back in the day in a rural area, where you didn't really think about the strays interbreeding until something really noticeable happened. I remember it costed a fortune.

Isaac Newton Is Anecdotally Attributed With The Invention Of Cat Door

It depends on where you measure from. I would think a cat is measured very near the "source", motorcycle sound checks on off-road vehicles are done at a 45 degree angle from the exhaust and at least 2' from the muffler, with the rpm at half of peak. On-road testing is typically done at the curb as the bike is driven past at a specified RPM. Sound readings from different positions and even on different terrain can result in radically different results. So, it's impossible to give an "average" with all the different testing methods, add in a huge variety of aftermarket exhaust systems and the average motorcycle dB level varies from low 70s to over 100.

While olives aren't dangerous for cats, you'll want to limit them to less than one olive at a time. No more than a couple of times a week. And, of course, only if they've never had a bad reaction.

Carrots are good for cats & dogs in moderation (as with most things) no more than 10% of their diet. Just be careful that no pieces are big enough to choke on. That they're cooked for cats. No salt or inappropriate spices/fats. Carrots are said to help deworm pets.

They also get whisker fatigue which is basically sensory overload and can be painful. Make sure their food and water bowls are wide enough or just use flat plates to deter this.

A female cat's whiskers will grow wider and longer as her pregnancy advances. Whiskers are used to know if a space will accomodate the cat body dimensions.

They never bother to tell me, they go get one of my sons to come inspect. If I happen to discover it, they will take it directly to my children and look at me like I'm crazy. Does this mean my cats are....broken?

I read two explanations over the years as to why cats leave us parts of dead animals. One is that it is a present, the other is that they consider us as part of their cat family, and are trying to teach us to hunt as we seem quite inept in catching mice :D

This study is based on the fact that cats are obligate carnivores and lack the taste perception of sweetness because they don't need it. A bird or bat or primate would need this sense of sweetness to judge whether fruit is ripe or not. Btw, my cat loves fried sweet dough.

In Case Of An Emergency Cats Can Recieve Dog Blood

If cats are declawed, it's too painful to touch hard, shards of clay litter/etc. If they're long-haired, many don't like the way it feels (it tickles their bums). If your putting more than 2"/5cm of litter in the box, many cats DON'T like that. If you're using strong/ wrong smelling cleaners on the box, it'll actually REPEL them. The location can be off-putting too. The rule of "#of cats+1" doesn't work if they're all near each other. Some cats don't like enclosed boxes, or those automatic ones. Just one time of going off when they're in there can put them off it forever. Mobility issues can make it painful to step over high sides. Good luck, hope this helps!🤞😻🤞

Mine trained himself - sort of. One day I heard the obvious sound of someone peeing in the toilet, which freaked me out because it was just me and the cat. It was him, perched on the seat. I had never made any attempt to train him to do this in his 9 years of life (I got him as a kitten). He has been urinating in the toilet for at least the last 8 months, but not consistently and will only poop in (or sometimes beside) the litter box.

They get imprinted on type of litter, foods, etc. when they're very young. That may be why? Or that #2 takes longer or their stance during it makes a difference to comfort. Most cats get a little stressed using the toilet, it'd be more so during #2s.

At risk of even more down votes, I'd like to point out the vast difference between a few cat turds being flushed vs the tonnage of human waste that gets flushed. Wastewater treatment plants are so overwhelmed with contaminated human waste that the minute amount of pet waste that makes it into the system is negligible. Did you know that the medications you take are excreted in your waste and that treatment plants cannot remove all of it? 20 of 20 treated samples tested found levels of medical waste that are problematic. If you are concerned about it, have your own water tested and purchase a purifier that meets your needs. https://www.lakeside-equipment.com/do-wastewater-treatment-plants-remove-pharmaceuticals/

actually its because cats are able to feel vibrations in the ground, and can fell them from several miles away.

Actually it's because cats receive messages from their demon minions warning them of impending quakes and doom. Cats have minions everywhere

Yes ! I saw a video of cats reacting right before an earthquake in Japan. There’s a video of it on YouTube.

The dogs I had growing up in California were pretty dang reliable in freaking out 12-24 hours before we had an earthquake. I personally think a lot of animals can sense the vibrations fom a coming earthquake.

Where I live, earthquakes can happen, but very rarely andare minor. The last two times that I can remember, my dad told me our cats started acting bonkers before the tremor was felt. Even as minor as the tremors were, I'm pretty sure the cats were aware of it before the actual event. That they felt such a small vibration still amazes me.

And when it does, it's an indicator that - as a human - you have messed up.

The position of a cat's ears is one of the ways that they communicate with us. The ability to read them is an important skill to have as a cat servant. 🐱🧎🏼‍♀️🧎🧎‍♂️

What else do you need to put Edison in the "Most Disgustings Human Beings Ever" list?

Thomas Edison also electrocuted elephants so industries would adopt direct current instead of Tesla backed alternating current. Ugh.

She was a stray tuxedo cat. They killed her afterwards so they could research her brain and the electrodes that they implanted before the flight😿
