Food quality standards exist for a reason. Not only because you could get really, really sick if you ingest something a sleazy restaurant owner deems edible but it’s actually way past the expiration date, but also because it’s kinda gross. There are more reasons, but you get the point.
Well, whether a restaurant is trying to maximize profits by balancing on the fence between fresh and not-so-fresh food, or it’s straight up company policy to use expired food or to price-gouge its patrons or it’s super unhealthy because the client won’t notice, trying to hide it is nearly impossible because the staff knows, and if they know, everyone else might too.
And now they do, as people on Reddit have been discussing food items that people should absolutely stop ordering from their restaurants because reasons, man.

Some places, especially fast food joints, have unlisted, unofficial things that employees fix for themselves and customers see them with it and order it when they come back. The only issue is that one employee is usually the only one who knows what they want and you have to have a cashier with some common sense that understand how to charge for the item and extras.
Worked for 8 years at In-n-Out...
If this thread is wanting to expose gross stuff: Nothing. I swear, the quality standard that they have, which became my standard, was nuts. Food quality, cleaning routines, regular inspections. It makes it hard for me to eat anywhere else. 8 years of a free burger every day worked and I still crave them.
But if you want to slow the growth of your gut, cut the shakes. They're real ice cream mix, not a typical watered down shake mix. I actually prefer the watered down taste of a McDonalds or Wendy's shake, but an In-n-Out shake is like eating liquid Ice Cream. You're already getting a burger and fries... skip dessert this time.
I never have room for a shake after a double double with cheese and fries, protein style!
What are you talking about? Desserts go to a different box in the stomach helloooo!
Load More Replies...Unfortunately they're family owned but there are plenty in CA as well as some in AZ, NV, & UT
Load More Replies...They claim to donate equally to both the big parties.
Load More Replies...Meanwhile my dietitian is like “one burger meal + dessert per week won’t kill anyone (allergies etc notwithstanding), Susan.”
I miss In N Out so very much. My kingdom for a double animal style!
Nice to read something positive. Skip the fries. No reason for those tasteless spuds.
Nothing better at 11 PM than going to In-N-Out to get ONLY a shake.
When you order a pizza, look for the specials.
On Pizza Hut's website, you could order a large pizza with two toppings for $18. But if you go to the "Deals" tab, that same pizza could be had for $8.
They won't apply the discounts for you automatically. Sometimes you gotta look for them.
This is the same in the UK, when ordering you have to select the deal in a special section for the discount no matter how many times you order from your local store
Domino's is the same way. You can get a 1-topping pizza for $18, but if you choose their 2 or more $6.99 deal you can get the same pizza plus wings or pasta for less than the original $18. For I think $2 more you even order their specialty pizzas. They literally make it so you have to order more food than you actually want in order to save money.
Walked into a dominos for the 8$ carry out and was told to order online! I’m right here, take my money!
Don't get why you're being downvoted. Pizza Hut and Domino's suck in comparison to real pizza places.

I worked in a local coffee and donut shop and nobody ever cleaned the soda machines. They were so gross the first time I cleaned them. I asked if anyone knew how to do it and nobody knew, nobody had ever done it
lots of people are wondering why there is soda. Because I live in a highly mormon populated area and they can’t drink coffee. And apparently a lot of people like Mountain Dew with their apple fritters. And apparently Mormons can drink Mountain Dew??
I had a Mormon friend tell me they can't drink anything brown or with alcohol. Like coffee or tea or Coke. Never made sense to me.
Load More Replies...Why would a supreme, omnipotent being care if you consume brown hot drinks? Super controlling religions are just so weird.
If you think that this supreme omnipotent being talks to you, you get a little paranoid over what he might be saying...
Load More Replies...Mormons are still prohibited from consuming tea or coffee. ... The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as it is formally known, determined that a reference to "hot drinks" in religious texts only applied to tea and coffee, not all caffeine products.Sep 21, 2017
In 2002, Salt Lake was the host city for the Winter Olympics that year. Now, this was a huge problem for Coca-Cola who have been a sponsor for the Olympics since the Amsterdam Summer Games in 1928. How could Coca-Cola have a presence in a city they're not even sold in? Luckily, the answer fell in their lap through the bribery scandal Salt Lake were involved in to get the Games. So, Coca-Cola hold a press conference saying how in light of these horrendous findings, they have to sadly end their association with the IOC. Two years later, at the Athens Summer Games, who's back as the primary sponsor? Coca-Cola. And that is how they solved their Salt Lake problem.
I had a Momon neighbor who often borrowed baking items from me on Sundays. She told me that they weren't allowed to go grocery shopping on Sundays because they couldn't work on Sundays. But they could cook? That's work!
Exactly what one should do or not do on the Sabbath is somewhat up to individual interpretation; I think of "work" in this context as meaning "anything done in exchange for money" rather than "anything involving effort." https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/sabbath-day?lang=eng

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (which is trying to encourage its full name over the nickname Mormon) do not use tobacco products, alcohol, non-herbal tea, coffee, or abuse drugs. Caffeine is not forbidden, though some members avoid it because of its connection with tea and coffee. Source: https://www.churchofjesuschrist.org/study/manual/gospel-topics/word-of-wisdom?lang=eng
you know those freestyle coke machines? pour water for a second and THEN put the drink in
Don’t get decaf coffee at Burger King. Maybe this was just the one I worked at, but we didn’t actually brew any decaf. Whenever someone ordered it, my manager would just have me water down the regular coffee
That's so awful! I hope this is an isolated incident and this isn't a widespread problem. Someone who has a heart problem could have major problems drinking caffeine.
That's bad, because some people want decaf for health reasons. Caffeine gives me migraines.
Yikes! What if a pregnant person orders decaf? Or someone has a caffeine allergy?
I ordered a coffee in Burger King once and I'm sure they didn't give me coffee, but a cup of the nasty bean water the coffee machine ejects while cleaning...
No coffee is ever truly, fully, decaf. Its MUCH lower sure, but its going to have caffeine no matter what. Still though, make coffee ffs, lol
I worked in several Tim Hortons as a teenager.. The Ice Capp machine never gets cleaned. Never ever.
One of the girls I worked with went into anaphylaxis after making herself an Ice Capp at the end of her shift. She had a severe penicillin allergy.
This was approx. 16yrs ago in a few locations around Southern Ontario. Obviously YMMV depending on when and where you worked, but my experience was that they never got cleaned.
They are speaking the truth, I know people who worked at them in Alberta, my ex was from Hamilton ON and said the same thing
I don’t know a Canadian who doesn’t think Timmy’s went to heck after they sold out. Timbits are still ok.
They started getting bad further back than that. When they switched their bread to that "soft" sponge bread that's when they really started to go downhill.
Load More Replies...Mould. I would be very surprised if that was a true story. Sounds a tad hyperbolic to me.
Load More Replies...I worked at a Tim Horton's as a teenager and even the whole "fresh pot every 20 minutes" is false. We were supposed to dump a pot after 20 minutes to ensure the coffee is fresh, but every 20 minutes we would just wipe the time off the pot and write a new time on it
I worked at timmies for awhile and we absolutely had to dump them after 20 minutes (though we sold so much coffee it never lasted 20 minutes, except decaf), but from speaking to other employees it's about 50/50 as to whether they follow that 'rule' or not
Load More Replies...I worked at Tim Hortons and cleaned the machine on Sundays. It takes a while because you have to run buckets of water through it, but we didn’t do it every week
Dominos worker here. Nothing gross really that we do, but for the love of god stop ordering our bread twists. (Unless you want the cinnamon ones). You can order the Parmesan bread bites. It’s the same amount of dough in total for like 3 bucks cheaper.
But I do not like Parmesan? This is a bit stupid - if it was only about the amount of dough for the money then I would better buy my own flour and bake myself...
Then it doesn't apply to you? The point is that the parm bites are about 3 dollars, and the park twists are 6 dollars but both are the same amount of food
Load More Replies...Unfortunately parmesan is often not veggie, and I'm dairy intolerant so I can't indulge
It's the same dough used for the pizza crust but I still want bread twists.
Worked at Krispy Kreme for 2 years.
Just so you know, the doughnuts are absolutely fresh- brought in twice a day.
Don't order any of the Coffee Bean drinks, though- they never ever change the ice chest.
Doughnuts are most fresh at 6 am and 3 pm; least fresh at 2pm & 10pm
"Brought in" doughnuts doesn't sound "fresh" to me. "Fresh" is made on-site.
The Krispy Kreme I know has a conveyor belt that rolls new donuts out.
Load More Replies...Our local one produces the doughnuts in house, on a conveyer belt, You can watch the magic happen through the windows. It used to be we had to watch for the "Hot" sign, but they make them pretty much all day now. Never had a stale one, and they will pack a hot box if you ask.
They also throw out every single donut made from the day before, be it in their store, supermarket or a convenience store. I asked to drop them off at the local homeless shelters on my own time and swiftly was told I would be fired immediately. All of the route sales people were literally throwing out 1-3 huge trash bags of donuts daily. Senseless.
KK's are the best but if the "light" is on, that's the worst time to get them to go. The heat causes the glaze to remain liquified and it all ends up in the box and very little left on the doughnut. I told corporate they need to put wax paper in the box but they honestly couldn't grasp the logic behind what I was telling them.
yeah, once my friend's dad brought donuts at 6 am, THEY WERE MORE PERFECT THAN THE STROKES ON MONA LISA so I can confirm its true
I've never been to a KK that didn't have the donut "machine" on site. It was part of going there, to see the machine plop the donut dough onto a conveyor that went through a long fryer, flipping them half way and then under a glaze waterfall thingy.
Not fast food per se but if it’s at Applebee’s it’s been microwaved.
Totally true! My vegetarian boss and I tried to order a teriyaki dish without meat in desperation because we were stuck eating there with other people. The server looked alarmed, people were consulted, and in the end they admitted they couldn't because everything wad premade and premixed. This was some years ago, but I doubt they have suddenly changed their whole operation.
All restaurants have a microwave, but they’re not always used for evil
This is true, I worked there for only 3 days before I quit, I was disgusted with the whole place
Used to work at Panda Express, no real complaints about the ingredients and food prep, but don't buy any shrimp entrees if you actually want to a full meal. They purposely use a smaller serving spoon to make it appear you're getting a lot of food. I believe it was 6 shrimps per serving max was the the policy.
Funny thing is shrimp is the cheapest meat you can buy, but restaurants have made it prestigious and charge more for it. The profit margins for shrimp are insane.
I question them if they have no complaint on the awful facsimile or Americanized Chinese free of that Panda Express serves.
Raisin canes-
Yes everything is made to order. Yes they had insane cleaning standards. Believe me my a** was there cleaning the store till 5 in the morning after 3rd shift.
My go to is box no slaw extra toast. Slaw is good but the toast is where it's at.
They might be where you're at. It's a fast food place specializing in chicken tenders. Opinions may vary but I absolutely love them. Though... don't go at peak times. They're really popular and you probably don't want to wait a half hour in the drive-thru. Where I live they're really quick at moving that line, there's just that many cars.
Load More Replies...Interesting story. The owner took his business plan to banks trying to get financing and the banks turned him down because they didn't think a fast food restaurant that just sold tenders without other types of chicken would make it. He finally found a bank that would back him and the rest is history.
There’s a canes right on my way home, I stop there basically every weekend lol
The toast is sooooo good. Like I'm pretty sure they put crack in it because I've had a lot of bread in my 40 years but nothing like this. The only disappointing thing is their chicken strips are getting smaller and smaller.
We just got one in our area of Southern California. Need to try it. Now especially the toast.
i don't think we have them in my area, but we do have 'Guthrie's," where the founder once worked, and seems to have been inspiration for this place since Guthrie's specializes in chicken fingers, fries, and toast.
They only sell chicken tenders, nothing is made to order, the name of the restaurant is literally Raising Caine Chicken Fingers. The combos available are a kids meal, the box with 3 or 4 strips, or the chicken tender sandwich, that’s it, and carry only one sauce. It shouldn’t take until 5am to clean, maybe they had to do inventory or had some special deep clean that day?
Yes, all the chicken is made to order, AND hand battered, unlike other places where they sit under a heat lamp all day, Caine's are absolutely fresh, and really good chicken. They carry their (made only by managers) special sauce, but they also carry in-store made honey mustard, and hot sauce. Just ask. They make homemade coleslaw, crinkle cut fries, and garlic Texas toast (which you can request garlic on both sides). Not to mention the fresh squeezed, house-made lemonade. A good deep clean, done the right way, including all the machines, absolutely can sometimes take until 5am, probably twice a week maybe more. If you like fresh made chicken tenders, this is most definitely the place to go.
Load More Replies...How chain restaurant can be labeled as quality food for you? It's just junk industrial food to me , served on a fancy plate instead of paper wrap
Waffle House cook:
If we are talking health reasons... everything. There is nothing remotely healthy on the menu.
Otherwise I say grits because they can sit for hours and managers will try to keep them looking fresh even though they cost next to nothing to buy.
Yeah ... but my guess is that, at 2am, you don't really care all that much about "healthy", amiright?
I don't think anyone is under the impression Waffle House is a health spot.
Sometime you just gotta go to the Awful Waffle. Ham n cheese omelet ang hash browns are guilty pleasure comfort food.
Sometimes you just want something that tastes great and fills you up. When I lived in Georgia, Waffle House was the place for a fast, good and filling meal. We didn’t care about how unhealthy it might be.
Why do American's love grits so much? It's just flavourless mushy baby food....
Everything at WH is fried in Lo Melt (Wesson’s answer to Proctor & Gamble’s Crisco), instead of butter or margarine. Its more of an industrial lubricant that flavoring, requiring less downtime for cleaning.
Used to work as a server at outback.
The bloomin onion costs around 70 cents to make and they sell it for like 8 bucks
That's how markups work. Aside from the fact that the bloomin' onion is relatively labor intensive to make on your own. I'd rather just pay the $8.
Pretty much every menu item at a restaurant has ridiculous markup. It's the tradeoff to not having to shop, cook, or clean up.
No one cares about the production cost or we'd just make it at home
That is why it's made to be shared between six people, they do state that bit.

cod is fished still...in the northeast like RI and mass.

If you order any of the all day breakfast items at McDonalds after around 1:00, it will most likely be a few hours old.
I'm way too amused that they mold their butter pats to have their logo on them.
I worked at Starbucks. Nobody who values their health should order a white mocha anything. That white mocha shit is absurdly unhealthy and disgusting to work with.
I don't think any drink in Starbucks is really healthy! The sugar is ridiculous
They call it "roasted" coffee, but I say "burned" coffee. Overrated, overpriced.

I don't understand Starbucks at all. I was there only twice (second time because I didn't believe that the horrible thing I had on first time was standard) and I have no idea why anyone goes there. The coffee is bad. I like a good cup of coffee and this was one of the worst coffees I ever had. Thta is why they put in so much of sweet syrup, to mask the taste of the coffee. And then there is the price. I don't know what is the price now, but when I tried that, it cost two times as much as amazing coffee in small coffee house five minute walk away. And starbucks is EVERYWHERE! Why people go there?
starbucks=vomit inducing crap coffee they roast the bean so dark they are burned. good coffee shouldn't taste like that

Id like to know as well like obviously its unhealthy but why is it THAT unhealthy?

I flat out refuse to enter a Starbucks. The first and only time I went, there wasn't enough sugar to make that coffee drinkable, and I normally don't use sugar!
Jack in the Box. I don't know why anyone orders the bacon cheddar potato wedges. It's fake cheese with fake bacon on fried potatoes. I'm trying to remember the ingredient list on the cheese but I distinctly recall nowhere on the packaging did it say it contained dairy. It also smells like feet.
Unrelated, but good cheese smells like feet. Enjoy your next whiff of Parmesan, and you’re welcome 😁
I never eat there at all. you know how people joke about taco bell runs? never got them, but EVERY time I have eaten at jack, i have had emergencies
Funny thing...if you call fake cheese "vegan", some people will actually love it.
Worked at an AMC theater for 2 years. Do not buy the coffee unless it's early morning when we first open. Otherwise you're gonna drink coffee that's been sitting out for a solid 5 hours, at least.
I did, once, when I went to an early morning showing of the first Star Trek movie. My friend and I staggered in and sat sipping in an almost empty auditorium except for the cheering AOL geeks in the front row. It was actually nice coffee, went well with chocolate.
Load More Replies...I don't know about that coffee at AMC, but having fresh coffee from an empty glass carafe is almost impossible. Even when the company requests that the coffee be brewed at specific time intervals, employees routinely dump the old coffee into the fresh one. I had to threaten dismissal regarding this issue, end even then, they did on my back. Stainless steel vacuum thermal dispensers can hold hot and fresh coffee for up to four hours when being used or for up to eight hours when kept full. I can vouch for them; I never had a complaint from guests when properly used. two-gallon...57f33c.jpg
Lol. Murica, I guess. In Australia most cinemas have espresso machines. Although that doesn't always guarantee good coffee.
I used to work at Papa Johns.
Everything.
But in particular the f**king garlic knots. Full of f**king salt and dripping with faux butter.
People hate on Papa John's, but when it comes to chain pizza, it's the best. Pizza Hut is always dripping in grease and Dominos crust is bland and dry and they always seem undercooked.
Never liked them. Sause is too sweet and the cheese is always kinda weird.
Papa John sucks, so I refuse to order from the restaurant. I know they cut ties with him. Too late. Refuse to eat their cardboard crap pizza anyway.

Whatever that kind of burger is, it's making me feel sick just looking at it.
Been loving the roast beef sandwiches with Horsey Sauce since they opened. Now it's also the fried mozzarella. Disclaimer: no horses are harmed in the manufacturing of that sauce.

Burgers from Sheetz are microwaved. The grill marks are fake. Bacon is microwaved too.
Also, don't drink the f**king Peanut Butter shakes. One particular peanut butter shake has nearly 2,000 calories in it.
Yes, Sheetz food isn't gourmet, but when you are driving hundreds of miles and need a fill up for car and persons, it can be a lifesaver. My son likes the chicken strips and we both eat the mac and cheese, and we will do a breakfast or lunch sandwich depending upon what time we roll in there. Cold case usually has cheese and fruit.
Please stop telling me to not order certain food because it has a lot of calories. I'm an adult and can make my own decisions about my health and that kind of garbage leads to disordered eating.
Never ever order the burgers. Come out dripping slime. You can get the same somewhere else for less. Hot dogs are good, though.
Not technically fast food but don't order room service at small hotels. You're getting charged really high prices for pre-prepared, often times frozen food that is heated up in what is basically a toaster oven.
Cold cut sandwiches are the only real exception. BLT your brains out but don't order the burger.
Again, vague and general about all small hotels. Not helpful. Some small hotels have chain coffee shops nextdoor and get food from them. Not fair to generalize
Small hotels in France means quality family made food very often. The best ones are those labeled '' Les Routiers'' ( for truckers but open for everyone) : all you can eat homemade entrée and dessert buffet, very good ''plat du jour'', generaly for less than 12€... Best bargain ever! Plus you can get a typical atmosphère there, a good tip for trippers
When I crawl back into the hotel after a night of drinking and partying and have the munchies, I don't care at that point if they're microwaving day old chicken nuggets!
No one ordering room service at a hotel is expecting gourmet. They want to be lazy AF and still get food. That's it.
Tropical Smoothie Cafe- All of the smoothies, except the detox ones, have SO much sugar in them. You’re not being healthy by going there. The sugar isn’t just from the fruit. Sugar is added to most smoothies, and they claim it’s good because it’s turbinado. Also: fruit is healthy.
Sbarro, and while it's all pretty "meh" food for the price, I have to say the spaghetti is probably the worst value. Not because it's particularly bad, but it's just bulk buy spaghetti, too much salt, and some oil for almost as much as any of the other, actually complicated pastas.
Never appealed to me. Hell, a DiGiorno frozen pizza looked more appetizing.
Don't order crab from a Planet Sub in the midwest. This seems like common sense but there is alwats that guy
I work at Taco Bell.
Y’all need to stop ordering the rolled chicken tacos. I’m begging you. I’ve tried them, without sauce, and they are 100% flavorless. The flavor comes from whatever shorty side sauce you order.
I can’t believe these are limited time offer. They’re garbage, everyone I work with agrees but they’re so overwhelmingly popular for some reason
So basically they don't like them so you shouldn't order them?? Doesn't say anything is wrong with them. I love them dipped in guac and/or sour cream.
Right? Screw demand, a few employees don’t like them so take them off the menu forever! They’re selling like hot cakes? Doesn’t matter, they have no flavor!!
Load More Replies...Wait...I adore these, they're delicious and feel fantastic in your mouth and yes, the sauce is amazing too. I wait all year for them, it's pretty much the only time I go to Taco Bell now the Mexican Pizza is gone. What I'm hearing is you have bad taste, not something's wrong with the rolled chicken tacos.
chicken without salt or other seasoning is almost "tasteless". A lot of restaurants don't put salt or pepper to the meats because customers can add them to their taste. It doesn't mean that there is something wrong with the meat.
Not to mention Taco Bell is widely known for buying the lowest grade meat and meat close to expiration.
Sonic - small sonic blasts. They break the cup every time
That has nothing to do with customers ordering them, or their nutritional value, that’s the cheap cups they use.
Sonic just in general is not worth it, at least not in my area. Went to three different Sonics 3 different times to get shakes after 7, it was not crowded, but still ended up sitting in the same drive-through spot anywhere from 25-90 minutes It was ridiculous! Twice they still managed to mess up the order.

Worked as a shift leader at Moes for 2 years. Do NOT get the queso fresco. Since no one gets it, it just sits there sometimes for days. Absolutely disgusting
Barista here, brewed coffee at coffee shops. Unless its peak hours, brewed coffee is typically stale.
Wendy's tosses their coffee every hour and brews fresh all day. Most places that serve coffee do. Generalizing that all do this just because of a few peanut pinchers isn't fair.
This must be very American. Coffee shops only sell espresso coffee made in front of you (not pre-brewed stuff) here and I think everywhere else I’ve been, apart from the US.
I'm in the US and every coffee shop I go to replaces their coffee every hour. I'll agree convenience stores and bakeries and the sort are sometimes lax on changeover but not the local coffee shops. Maybe it's a regional thing.

This happens everywhere including international hotel chains if there is poor management.

Every single person who works in fast food establishments - The place was dirty..everyone there was dirty ..I was the only one clean ...
This whole article is about food service employees who were either too f*****g lazy or entitled to fix the problem they are referring to. Seriously, clean the f*****g dirty s**t. It's your job . Throw old food away, it's your job. If you can't handle the most basic of jobs, don't complain when you can't do something better.
In these types of jobs there usually isn't a lot of extra time that could be spend on cleaning such machines. You have a manager that orders the employees around, the manager should decide someone needs to clean the machine

In most countries this sort of hygiene or food descriptions would be illegal
Most of the cleanliness posts are more so a picture of the people who run the restaurant. The place I worked in high school had soda and beer taps. Each night they were what I came to call maintenance cleaned and once a quarter the lines were flushed from the source. The ice machine was broken down and cleaned twice a year. I worked in the one store for 4 years and we never failed a health inspection. The owners were local and they would swing by without notice to make sure everything was up to their standards and they had 25 stores in the area. All were treated the same.
Like the other comments, just stop pretending there’s anything good about any fast food (maybe the side salad with vinegar and oil, maybe) If it’s convenient, and you enjoy it, hey, “freedom”. But don’t lie to yourself or your family about “better” fast food.
I worked at a Dutch McD about 15 years ago. It was a very clean place. We actually had awards for that and there are timers that go off when we needed to wash our hands. There was always someone supervising so you have to go wash your hands if they saw you touch you hair or something. The oil is changed multiple times per day. There are a lot of myths about McD only changing the oil which is not true. The only thing is.. dont order the old school veggie burger. We have a lot of veggie chicken in the country for a bit now, those look fine. But when i worked there there was 1 veggie burger which we almost never sold. During busy times we didnt make things to order cause it sells within 2 minutes anyway but not the veggie burger. Those stay in the warmer for way to long. Theyre horrible anyway but worse when theyre kept 30 minutes....
Load More Replies...Also, the teriyaki burger at McDonald's. It's a b**** to make and also gets dropped on the floor at a much higher frequency than other items.
