Russian Fisherman Posts Terrifying Creatures Of The Deep Sea On Twitter, And People Want Him To Stop
Russian fisherman Roman Fedortsov's twitter account is flooded with photos of the most bizarre deep-sea creatures ever. The man behind the camera works on a fishing trawler in Murmansk (extreme northwest of Russia) and uses his phone to document the scary creatures that get pulled in the fishing nets. Some argue that the strange fish look like something from a horror movie. However, Fedortsov shows no signs of fear when handling these weird sea animals and even adds some sense of humor to his tweets.
The pictures invoked some controversy and backlash with arguments such as deep sea creatures should be left alone. Many of the deep-sea fishes die because of the change of pressure when brought to the surface, and this raises the question of whether they should be killed just for the sake of a sensational tweet. Plus, after seeing such scary fish for the first time, people are afraid humans would destroy the delicate ecosystem of the mysterious ocean floor beings.

How sickeningly cruel to remove these animals from their home, many of whom are deformed from the immense change in pressure, and then further exploit them by making a spectacle of them. Science has shown that fishes suffer fear and pain. They deserve our respect and compassion, not cruel exploitation.
please...but you have no problem killing mice, rats
Load More Replies...why is he catching this many fish from the deep, he's just wasting life, justifying it as cataloguing. It would suck to have this type of fishing to be encouraged
It's a ghost shark, also known as a chimaera.
Load More Replies...I know these as aghost shark... it's not an actual shark, but it made of cartilage like sharks. The angel shark are another thing altogether.
This one is the most amazing one. Looks like a creature from a sci-fi horror show
Crazy s**t, i would watch a whole planet earth series about "The Deep"!
They're called "deep sea" creatures for a reason, so don't worry about seeing one in the ocean.
Load More Replies...Omg!!! Totally!!! This guy is little but he is absolutely terrifying!!!!
Load More Replies...It could also be the thing from Star Trek The wrath of Khan I think they put in the helmets that crawled in the ear oh my God
This is a redfish (uer in norwegian). The eyes pops out when it's dragged from the bottom of the ocean due to the difference in pressure. Quite tasty, but have sharpe bones.
Thats a terrible way to die (quick change in pressure). :(
Load More Replies...Naturally ready smoked,. & Delicious, found at Marks. & Spencer. Fish counter
It's a Tiger fish, poisonous as hell,. Not to be eaten ! Dead
Mola Mola or Sunfish. Life in tropical waters. Does not exist anywhere close to Murmansk...
They are found all over the world in all larger oceans. Though they are usually in warmer or at least temperate waters, they are not too rare in norther waters. There have been sightings in the Bering strait near Alaska, as well as some Norwegian fjords, among others. In fact, most sightings are centered on the northern hemisphere. Though obviously this might also be related to most of the southern hemisphere having less water area actually right by the ocean. Meaning if it is swimming right in the middle of the southern pacific, likely no one will be near to take note of its appearance. Anyway, here's a nice map with sightings: http://eol.org/pages/213810/maps
Load More Replies...Isnt this the moon fish? And how big exactly is it? Looks huge in this pic
Sea Cucumbers. They look nicer than they are. Those tentacles actually have really fine filaments as they are deposit feeders. In water those would be spread out like a net or better yet roots, drifting in the current, to filter anything edible. You'd likely mistake them for some kind of coral reef plant if you saw it in its habitat. It's Psolus phantapus specifically. Oh and some species of Sea cucumbers are a delicacies or common food items in many places somehow connected to the ocean (Spain, France, Portugal, Hawaii, and much of East and Southeast Asia have them on the menu somewhere).
I am sure it's trying to sneak off the table, not to be trusted, has shifty. Eyes
Yuk, & they come in pairs ! For fishy pies ! but not well yuk
Beautiful blue in the eyes and scales. I hope these poor fish are let go when he finishes with them, they do run look to me as if they're edible. That poor fish with the bloated eyes due to change in pressure, will that go back to normal? They're all fascinating, but I hope they're handled ethically
Night fish,. Invisible at night, a real dark one. ! Dies during daylight.
I don't know what is more terrifying the fish, or the fact that it looks like my grandma's dog.
That's a baby chimaera. Chimaera are actually quite rare, so it's a shame that this one's life was stopped so early.
Already cooked,. ready to eat ! Looks quite hot ! Needs Tartar. sauce ! with fresh mint
Well it was ripped from the bottom to see where the pressure is 3000 the times what it is here so basically it pretty much imploded or exploded or however the hell it works something terrible happened to poor guy considering when he went through he looks pretty good with just one little kind of lumpy eye..

Maybe... just maybe... it's a CURSED human. He saw something he shouldn't have in the depths of the ocean...
Load More Replies...This just in: police are currently searching for a driver by the name of Spongebob who was recently involved in a hit and run in which one fish was killed.

Load More Replies...Under pressure... but not any more... no more pressure... pressure...
Load More Replies...All that pressure that was holding the poor little guy together is gone and he just exploded horrible it's very disturbing to see this I hope they didn't suffer
I chose not to comment on any of the photos, because I too agree that these creatures BELONG in the deep, NOT on somebody's table awaiting a photo op. Exploiting and killing innocent animals for the purpose of a photo is WRONG. What's wrong with people these days?
Making fun of dead beings is simply wrong. Even if they were alive, this is not a freak show. We should rather be humble considering in what hostile environments these creatures manage to live.
Load More Replies...I believe he's not fishing these only for pictures purpose but well because they are bycatch caught during deep-sea fishing. I will only add one thing: stop deep sea trawling! https://www.bloomassociation.org/en/
You are entirely right: according to BP's caption, this guy works on a trawler, and these deep sea creatures are a "collateral damage" to this extremely destructive way of fishing. Thanks for the link you mentioned, I'll immediately look it up.
Load More Replies...This really made me skin crawl. Unfortunately even if the fish were put back in the sea, they wouldn't survive due to the change in pressure, hence why most of their eyes have ballooned. Not condoning what is happening though, this type of fishing is so harmful.
I wish the article was a bit more clear about whether or not they were purposefully being brought up or are they just getting caught in the net. If the latter then he really has no control. Idk anything about how pressure affects the fish but it seems as though "just putting them back" isn't going to save them. Real questions need to be asked: Do his nets need to go down that far to get what he is actually trying to fish for? If so, then this seems unavoidable and why not document his findings?
Of course he (or the society he works for) has control. I really believe they are not catch on purpose but the fishing method is "non selective" meaning it's not study to avoid such catch. His nets don't need to go down that far but they don't care because it makes money.
Load More Replies...Ladies & gents! Please hold on to your panties! Do you even read the Post Texts at all?! It said (quoting) he photographs "creatures that get pulled in the fishing nets", which means they get in their by mistake, not intentionally! I am pretty sure Fishing boats don't fish for deep sea life- do you ever see these in your local supermarkets? No! So at least he documents them somehow. I am sure by the time they sort their catch these poor things are dead anyways. Might as well show the world all the different species. And unless you're a vegan, don't even start throwing shade at the fishing boat. When was the last time you ate fish? Yeah, exactly!
No one should be blamed. Fishermen do what they do, and these poor guys are just unlucky.
Fishermen are awful anyways. Not only if they catch deep-sea creatures.
Load More Replies...I'm a big environmentalist. I literally work for an nonprofit focus on conservation, but the the internet needs to CALM DOWN! People are so absorbed with social media they crash their car or ignore their loved ones, but they freak out because a FISHERMAN caught some fish and posted it to social media. THE ICE CAPS ARE MELTING! Pick your battles.
you really work in conservation? So do I...and since when do we need to chose a battle? These are two totally different subjects and deep sea habitats destruction is certainly as important as global change. Doesn't mean we can't work against both! By the way...could you also melt your CAPS!
Load More Replies...The majority of these fish are deep sea, and probably died from decompression long before suffocation.
Ugh... gross! I didn't want to click on this post, but its like when you step on somethings squishy, you know its going to be gross.... but you gotta look under your shoe.
