What an amazing family! God bless you all!

Bored Panda was so intrigued by some of the facts on the Insta page that we just could not help doing a deep dive down the rabbit hole to find out more information. One of the sadder facts on the page focuses on the “king of the jungle”, stating that "there are more lion statues in the world than there are real lions in the wild."

While we don’t necessarily find that hard to believe, we would prefer for it not to be true. We reached out to a lion expert to find out more. Dr. Andrew Loveridge is the Lion Program Director for Panthera, the global wild cat conservation organization.

"Less than 23,000 lions are estimated to remain in the wild, down from an estimated 90,000 in 1970," he told us, adding that the decline is "primarily due to poaching for the illegal wildlife trade, habitat loss, loss of prey due to overhunting by people, bushmeat poaching and human-wildlife conflict." Loveridge says the vast majority of lions live in east and southern Africa, with a small population in India.

Bored Panda asked Loveridge whether he thinks there are more lion statues than living lions in the world. "I’m afraid I have no way to corroborate this (as I spend my time counting live lions rather than lion statues!)," he said. "But it's possible, given how culturally important the species is even in parts of the world where lions are extinct or have never occurred."

It would indeed be difficult to count the exact number of statues on the planet. And we couldn’t find concrete stats. But to put things into perspective, London alone has 10,000 lion statues. That's according to a photographer who once tried to capture all of them.

While the number of live lions is going down, new lion statues are being made. As Marbleism reports, “Large lion statues have been created for centuries, dating back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia. Some of the most famous lion statues in the world include the guardian lions of the Forbidden City in Beijing, the Lion of Lucerne in Switzerland, and the Trafalgar Square lions in London.” And just a few months ago, a New Orleans man made headlines for putting a giant lion statue on his roof.

Donkeys can actually die of a broken heart if they have been forced to separate from their friends.. particularly if they are jennys (female) despite what some people think they are highly intelligent and incredibly sensitive animals, they have been known to bond with other animals at times, but they are more likely to be happiest with other donkeys.

Had a baby owl sleep on me, she was perched upright on my wrist. This phenomenon has only ever been observed in captivity. Perhaps it is due to the safety that they do not have in the wild? If a wild owl did this, they would get quickly eaten.

Speaking of large headed babies, except in very rare cases all British bulldog pups have to be born by Caesarian section because their heads are too large to pass through the birth canal. The only exceptions are if the mother is particularly large and the pups smaller than usual, and premature birth.

So is there anything the ordinary person can do to help the living lions? Loveridge says Panthera is running a "Home for the Holidays" campaign. "Just as people around the world head home to see family and loved ones for the holiday season, we’re reminded of the importance of protecting critical species and helping them return to their natural homes," he told Bored Panda. All donations made to Panthera between November 22 and December 31, 2024, will be matched dollar-for-dollar by The Ayers Wild Cat Conservation Trust.

As a matter of fact, our legal system recognizes a mitigating circumstance in the case in which the theft is due to an emergency that cannot be satisfied in any other way, they call it "state of need"(stato di bisogno). The reality is that nowadays the cases in which the theft of food is not punishable are very rare because in Italy we have social security institutions that make up for the need to steal. So in order not to be prosecuted you must demonstrate that you had no alternative.

Another post that caught our attention was this one: The “dead” man who came back to life after the ambulance he was traveling in hit a pothole. While the story seems bizarre, it turns out that it’s been widely reported by several news outlets. And not on April Fools.

The reports go something like this: An 80-year-old man’s relatives started preparing for his memorial, soon after he was declared dead by doctors in January this year. Darshan Singh Brar’s body was being transported from the hospital in Patiala, India to his home near a place called Karnal. NDTV reported that “mourning relatives had gathered, food had been laid out and wood had been collected for his funeral, when the ambulance hit a pothole.”

A sharp blow to the chest can restart the heart of someone in cardiac arrest. Most life support protocols for healthcare professionals recommend a "precordial thump" for witnessed cardiac arrest, which is a sharp (controlled) blow to the chest ( https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK545174/) I had a patient go into cardiac arrest whilst moving her to the ambulance, my colleague panicked and moved her too aggressively onto the stretcher, and the jolt reversed the cardiac arrest...

I am thinking of getting a massage because i have not had human contact in 4 months.

The man’s grandson was with him in the back of the ambulance and noticed his hand moving after the sudden pothole jolt. Upon noticing a heartbeat, the paramedics headed straight to the nearest hospital. The man was admitted in a “critical” condition. NDTV even posted a photo of him in his hospital bed after the incident.

"We cannot say that the patient had died. When he was brought to us, he was breathing and had blood pressure as well as a pulse. We don't know what happened at the other hospital, whether it was a technical error or something else," said a doctor at the hospital, where the patient was being treated.

“It is not surprising that coastal tourism dominates the Australian tourism market,” reads the report. “Australian coastal locations (particularly beaches and the Great Barrier Reef) have been identified as the most attractive destinations, with aquatic and coastal experiences among the greatest drivers.”

This is an old legend that the internet loves circulating. From 1986 old. From Disney historian Jim Hill, "The idea of the Dark Kingdom seems to have basically come from the internet, with no basis on anything concrete." A former Imagineer, "An entirely villains-centered park is complete b******t." https://www.thrillist.com/entertainment/nation/disney-dark-kingdom-villain-theme-park-revealed

In English, two words are used: sex and gender. In other languages, the two concept may be described with the same word (and even grammatical gender - applied to every noun of a language, including pieces of furniture and abstract concepts.) If this "news" was translated from any of these languages then it's misleading.

    Daniel Gómez

In many languages there's also that distinction. In Spanish we have it, same in French, German, Italian, and a long etc. And even if that were the case, same word for something does not mean equal/same meaning. In English, for example, the term "language" (uncountable) is used for both any code, communicative or not, and language (as a count noun) as specifically communicative verbal/written codes. Related, similar meaning, but definitely not the same and yes, you cannot confuse the two if you want to know exactly what you're referring to.

He should have just said Sex not gender. These days gender is essentially an opinion and therefore has no real value. All humans are born with two things. The first is an arsehole and the second is an opinion. It is generally wise to keep them both private. The modern fascination with gender, genitalìa and sexual preference is baffling to me. Who cares? I could not give one fück what gender a person is. I can work out your sex by looking at you and speaking to you. Don't care what's between your legs or what your opinion on your own gender is. I certainly don't care how, or who with, you choose to deploy your genitalìa.

Sounds like a semantics issue. It's important to understand how the X and Y work, some people still think that women determine gender, or that families with all boys/girls pass that down. There's nothing wrong will learning how genetics works.

    Daniel Gómez

Gender has nothing to do with genetics, it's a social construct. So yes, it's a semantic issue.

Dude is wrong- while i was doing my internship at the NiH I was studying a condition where individuals are genetically XY but due to their Leydig cells not being able to bind testosterone they are born biologically female. As in, outwardly they appeared female (but with no uterus or ovaries), however, they were unable to go through puberty, so never sexually matured. So, what's their gender? Ha, it's a trick question, because only they get to decide their gender.

Even though 16,000 miles of coastline sounds like a lot, there are several countries beating the Aussies when it comes to length. Canada claims the top spot, with a whopping 151,600 miles of coastal bliss. And Canadians can choose from three different oceans surrounding them: the Atlantic Ocean on the east, the Pacific Ocean on the west, and the Arctic Ocean to the north.

I bet that's because we daughters start nagging our dads about s**t like "cholesterol," "quit smoking," "get that mole checked," and "you should be doing annual physicals" when we grow up. Girls seem to pay attention to that kind of s**t and having someone to "nag" you about your health can inevitably get you doing things that prolong your life. But maybe that's just me. So it can be the reason I get extremely angry when I vacuum? I am usually pretty calm and rarely upset... but I get so super angry when I vacuum that I toss things and yell and usually just stop halfway through and stomping away so hard my legs hurt. So I usually just use a broom and then when my bf can find time for it he'll vacuum while I am in another room. Also, certain chewing sounds make me nauseous. Not all chewing sounds. Just some. Do I have this misophonia thing?

It's a coping mechanism, especially if you've already seen the show. Re-watching whole shows when you already know the ending is like a safety zone. During severe bouts of depression i watch Friends back to back several times or Studio Ghibli movies (except Grave of the Fireflies), there's no darkness in the show, it's 'safe' to watch and won't make my mood even worse. My ex-husband who never suffered depression could never understand how I could re-watch shows over and over.

Good! What makes me laugh about this is the people who were saying scientifically that gender and sex are two different things(I agree) are rejecting the science that says gender care for minors is wrong, because they don't agree with it. Hypocrites. Also, just because people don't mindlessly accept every single "fact" trans activists push, doesn't mean they're transphobic. They're just not automatically, spinelessly accepting everything you tell them. That's what intelligent, critical-thinking people do. Getting everything you want and everyone to agree with you without criticism or judgement is not equality.

It’s something to get your head around the fact that the moonlight you see hitting the ground this very millisecond is actually about 8 minutes old. Light from Mars is about 20 minutes old. And some of the stars whose lights we see in the night sky may be so far away that they may not even exist anymore, but we won’t notice them go dark if we look up at night until the number of years for the very last speck of light from them reaches Earth. Quite a thought, that time is so variable like that, instead of rigid.

Moon to Earth at lightspeed - 1,25 seconds. 8 minutes is from Sun to Earth. Mars to Earth - between 3 and 22 minutes, depending on the two plantes' relative position.

Only theoretically, because at a distance of 10 light years the Earth would be lost in the glare of the sun, so we'd actually be seeing the sun from 20 years ago. That's why we cannot directly see planets around even the closest stars using optical telescopes.

Partner snores, I sleep through it. I talk, they sleep through it. We both twitch and worm without waking each other.

This was an estimate in a single swimming pool, one pool, not average, over a period of three weeks. The Guardian also has a wonderful graphic on its article explaining how little this is: https://www.theguardian.com/science/2017/mar/01/how-much-pee-is-in-our-swimming-pools-new-urine-test-reveals-the-truth

As Kira points out this is not a 'fact' at all. All else apart, Urine is 99% water with a few other chemicals, so the effect of these on the pool's overall water, given that it's constantly being filtered and treated with other more powerful chemicals, is minuscule.

And that emotional pain probably comes from being caught at cheating or the knowledge he no longer has a chef, maid, prostitute, etc. at home any more.

Because women usually are dettached from the relationship way before it "officially" ends. And considering how awful partners we men can be sometimes, I don't blame them for it.

Studies like this are usually meaningless. You can do a study taking any two groups and any two things and come up with a useless conclusion. For example you can poll French children and Spanish children on preferring chocolate over strawberry ice cream and one group will be slightly higher on one or the other. Unless there's an equal divide (unusual) one or the other will come out with chocolate. Totally useless and shows a lack of any real understanding about statistics. But we see, over and over, this sort of result trumpeted as if it has some significance.

How can you evaluate amounts of emotional pain? Some people will make more of a fuss than others, just as with physical pain. It's very hard to quantify let alone make ridiculous extrapolations like this.

I was told it takes half the time you dated them ie dated two years, takes 1 year to get over them. Happily not true, my last one only took a few hours, jerk...think it helps if you get to tell them what you think of them, and tell them never to let their shadow cross yours in the life again...well, it did for me

Given that she has maybe 15 more child-bearing years, she would pretty much need to have sextuplets every year. The woman is delusional, unless she is planning to adopt.
