With inflation hitting nearly every corner of daily life, many people are quietly saying goodbye to items they once grabbed without thinking. From name-brand toothpaste to favorite snacks, what used to be basic necessities have now turned into guilty splurges.

So when someone online asked, “What has become so expensive that it’s just not worth it anymore?” the responses came flooding in. From breakfast staples to simple grooming habits, people shared the exact moment they decided, nope, not paying that anymore. Whether you're nodding along or rethinking your next shopping list, this one hits close to home.

Assorted everyday items including burgers, hot dogs, pizza, donuts, and chips illustrating rising costs of common foods. Fast food and lower-tier restaurant chains. The original point was that you put up with the quality and the conditions under which it was served in exchange for it being cheap. If it’s no longer cheap, why would you subject yourself to that?

We all enjoy the little joys in life. Maybe it’s treating yourself to a juicy steak or booking a spa day after a tiring week. Those tiny indulgences once felt routine. But now? They’ve become harder to justify. What used to be a simple reward suddenly feels like a luxury.

And while many of us have adjusted our spending, small businesses are feeling it, too. Rising costs aren’t just about consumer prices—they hit the supply chain hard. Business owners are juggling materials, shipping, and staff costs. It’s a constant battle to stay affordable. And not everyone can keep up. That’s where the strain starts to show.

    No-Understanding-912:
I think if movies/theaters want to survive, they need to suck it up and drastically cut ticket prices. Sure, it will hurt for a bit, but I bet more people will start going to the theaters and it will more than make up the difference. People love to complain about there's nothing to watch, everything is a sequel/prequel/remake, well it's because those have been guaranteed to make money and they can't take chances now with less and less people going to the movies.

My kids want to see the new Lilo & Stitch movie. The small local theater matinee price is $8, so 5 of us is $40 to see the movie with no snacks. I can't justify that price because I could buy it on DVD in a couple months for $20-25, or just wait for it to be on Disney+ (which I already pay for the subscription). Why should Disney get more of my money for the "privilege" of seeing it in the theaters (with no bathroom breaks)?!?!

Movie tickets have gotten stupidly expensive, but $150? NFW. Ticket prices in the states range from $16-25....which means $75-$100 of that was spent on snacks and absolutely avoidable. Price is a secondary concern for us at this point, the main reason we have abandoned the movie theater is the number of total inconsiderate POS that now seem to populate every single theater. A-holes who not only have their phone out the whole time, at full brightness but have the volume, the fuckwits who bring screaming babies, and young children to films like Oppenheimer with the expectation that they'll be fine because they have a tablet, and once they get bored of that tablet they ignore them as the run around screeching. Its not surprising that some certain quality level of parents would pull that c**p, but WTF would theaters think allowing it is going to retain customers?

I love going to concerts! I just go to the small sorta underground ones that are in the genres I listen to. The biggest concerts I go to are with Hayseed Dixie but most of my family goes to their concerts so it's also a big family party -with lots of strangers included. Lol. Just last Saturday I went to a kind of mini-festival: 8 small bands played during the afternoon and evening. The ticket cost med 100 Danish kroner (ca. 16 American dollars/13 Euros) and it was so nice! I strongly recommend that you find those cheap tickets for local and/small bands. 10/10 will always recommend! 🤟😎🤟

As a musician/recording artist/audio tech I stopped going to live concerts because the people running the sound system had it set up so only the bass drum could be heard, and at 120 DB! The vocals, pianos, guitars could not be heard. The horns were blasting. Just horrible audio mixing seems to be commonplace these days.

A great deal of the shoes & clothing from ‘budget’ retailers like Kmart or Target. The Sam Vines' Boot Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness: The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money. Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles. But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that’d still be keeping his feet dry in ten years’ time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet. Depends on how you treat your cheap stuff, imo. I always wear budget shoes and they will usually last 2-3 years. Not just seasons. Years. The shoelaces I use are more expensive than the shoes. Lol. I loved the look of some expensive shoes and after years of "should I?" I finally bought a pair. They lasted not even half a season before they were falling apart. Also, most of my clothes are cheap budget clothes. But they still last for decades. And I wear skirts and dresses for everything! A walk in the woods, gardening, going out whether it's for dinner, music or dancing. I am not particularly concerned about taking care of my clothes. Nor my shoes. But they last a pretty long time anyway and they look fine, imo. My point is: it depends.

But then the market shifted. “Things I used to sell for ₹99 now cost ₹199,” she says. Raw materials became more expensive. Labor charges climbed, too. The same products now cost nearly double to make. “It’s frustrating because I still want to keep things affordable.” But rising costs don’t leave much room.

Shipping is another big headache,” she adds. “Rates have gone up and up.” Whether it’s local or courier, nothing’s cheap anymore. “Packaging materials, boxes, even tape, it all adds up.” Every order comes with hidden costs. And most people don’t see what happens behind the scenes. “It eats into our margins.”

Many, many years ago, in France, there was a chain of cheap salons that offered a haircut for 19 euros. It was cool because lots of people paid with a twenty and left that other one euro as a tip. Then, the price went up to 20 euros, no more tips. (Tipping isn't a thing in France, a lot of places ban it. Those salons allowed it because they usually employed young people who would use the money to have a party together.)

I used to pay £60 for a really good cut, colour would take it over a hundred. Covid came, my hair grew, I topped up the roots with home colour for £7 a pop (Mr Auntriarch does the back for me). I now pay for one cut every three years and donate the hair.

I'm a guy and got one of those haircutting kits from Wahl a couple of decades ago, and haven't looked back. I don't wait to sit in someone's chair, I deal with it when I want, and it's a consistent result each and every time. Nobody's commented negatively on the results, and it gets done when I want it to be done. I keep my hair short, and it's done well for my 58-year-old self.

This. sucks being an Arsenal fan when you can't afford tickets.

Operating costs are higher than ever. “Even basic tasks are expensive now,” Ankita explains. Margins used to be wider, giving her room to grow. But with everything costing more, profits shrank. “We have to work twice as hard for the same returns.” It’s not sustainable long-term. “Something needs to change.”

Filet mignon, once trimmed and portioned out is obscene. $30-40 per 454g. BUT if you buy an entire untrimmed tenderloin, you're paying $7-$10 per 454g. A side of beef results in around 250lbs of meat, with a price tag of $700-$1100 (depending on the weight and where you are) and even paying a butcher to trim and section it off will end up with a per pound price of $4-$6.Yes that is a significant upfront cost for one person....but getting a few family or friends to chip in makes this very doable and will save oodles of money.

Back in the late 2000s/early 2010s, I would order pizza two to three times a week. Delivery fee was about 3 euros, not tip expected because the people were employed by the store, they were getting paid for their work. Nowadays, so many stores rely on apps like DoorDash instead of hiring people for the deliveries. The price is way too high for me to even consider getting anything delivered anymore, but I also don't want a stranger handling my food.

Even worse, because it's a random person for a third-party delivery system, they have no problems taking their time or being super late with it. If the driver worked for the restaurant, you could at least call and something was done about it b/c the restaurant didn't want to look bad. I had an Door Dash driver pick mine up and it took a literal hour for them to deliver it. There was a note on my updates saying that they had another stop to make. Why pick up a delivery when you're already doing something else?! I had never been so angry over food, and I'm usually patient with customer service workers, but that was the last time I used that app.

Stand-up comedy is the same. The cheapest seats are almost $100. Matt Rife came near enough to me to see, and I like Rife but he's not $98 funny. Jim Gaffigan was slightly cheaper but again. I'll just rewatch one of his specials.

If you're in the US you can thank the national guaranteed student loan program for that. When the universities realized they were guaranteed to get paid they raised the tuition, and 18-year-olds were happy to take out the loans because, well, they're 18, and it looks like free money.

That is outrageous. Last week, I made the mistake of buying a personal size watermelon for $10 because I was next door to one of the "high end" markets and didn't want to make an extra stop at my usual normal market. I got it home and opened it up, excited to surprise my husband with some juicy watermelon, only to find it full of stringy pulp. None of it could be eaten, so today I went back and received a refund.

I've read that a lot of the American resorts have been purchased by hedge funds and, that in some circumstances, it's cheaper to fly to Europe to ski. From my browsers AI plug-in: Skiing in Europe can be cheaper than in the U.S. due to significantly lower lift ticket prices, accommodation options, and overall costs for food and equipment rentals. Many travelers find that even with flight costs, a ski trip to Europe can save them upwards of $1,000 compared to skiing in the U.S.

200??? Copper(one of the less expensive mountains) is $235 for a weekend day pass. Vail/Aspen/Breck are more. Once they started catering to the destination skier, they totally ditched the locals. Now, You can get a season pass for low $$ at the beginning of the season, but the traffic is horrendous and what used to be a pleasant day, is a nightmare by the time you get there. Otherwise it is a Hotel and leaving the day before.

We have six cats. Some litter pricing has remained the same, but we're regularly having to switch depending on what happens to be on sale in any given month. Keeping in mind that we're in romania, where the minimum wage take home after 45% tax rate is $5k per year, pre-pandemic a 10kg bag of litter cost $2.5 - $3, same brand, same quantity now costs $12. Fancy Feast wet food we used to be able to get for 24 cent a can, now the sale price is usually around 60 cents.

    Kids.

I have one. My deductible was $10k (I had “good” insurance) but that pales in comparison to the $2400 a month we paid the first 5 years of her life for childcare. We can breathe a bit better now that she’s in school but after care still runs about $80 a week, then there’s multiple weeks of summer care that can range from $200-600 per week(not even for overnight camp). And that’s just the easy costs to calculate.

It’s always so hard for me to comprehend the push to have more children when so many families are in a similar situation to me and don’t have family help in general. My own mother cannot comprehend when I say we simply cannot afford another and it would be wrong to have more kids if we know it would cause a financial burden. Especially since I will likely be burned with my parents own poor financial health as they get older.
