I read about this a while ago. The platform was in the process of being tugged to where it's needed when a storm got so bad that the tugboats had to cut the ropes to not endanger their crews. So no, no uncapped well (also they have safety valves that *should* cap the well if due to some reason the pipe gets damaged/torn off).

This was caused by a failure of the mechanism which keeps the jetway aligned with the aircraft. The auto-leveler moves the jetway up and down because the plane moves as fuel is loaded, passengers disembark, etc.

Babylon, N.Y. (AP) -- A military transport plane with seven men aboard crash-landed on a busy highway Wednesday night, smashing into three cars during a wild skid and fatally injuring a motorist. The twin-engine C123 ran out of gas and swooped down on the four-lane Southern State Parkway on Long Island. The lesson is that you don't buy a McLaren because even when you know ow to handle it, someone else will crash into it. Or when you store it safe the whole place will burn down. So you see the McLaren, you don't buy and just walk away and buy yourself a bloody Kia for 1% of the price of a McLaren

What I've learned is never buy a McLaren and having a fancy car basically means it's going to start on fire or get me into an accident. I'll stick with my Honda, thank you very much!

#7...those straight-line Iowa winds. tore the roof off a building I worked in and didn't have to work for a week because of it. best part was that I got paid. the early 00's were great for that kind of thing with a very large company. that was also the straight-line winds that sent a silo roof flying a mile and landed on a car. it wasn't totaled though just took off the back bumper. it was an almost perfect landing.

Though these are at least possible to laugh about, as opposed to being wide-scale tragedies highlighting the failure of humanity as a species...

World Wars aren't small failures with relatively big impacts. Their dynamics are immense and hardly start at one specific point in time. They are huge mistakes with huge impacts. Chernobyl was enormous and also not just one person making one mistake. There were structural problems in understanding what the huck they were doing. This list is mostly about stupid small mistakes that end up with a big price tag.
