Most people no longer have to live in the “jungle”, therefore there is no need to constantly worry about one’s survival. It gives us plenty of free time if only we take a minute to actually enjoy it or use it in a way that makes us happy. However, it would be a mistake to assume that there is nothing out there that can end you, either by doing its job slowly and unnoticed or just taking a split second. Scarily enough, there might be things that you thought might do you no harm, and yet their appearance was misleading. These seemingly small or beautiful things can have different features from what you initially expected. So watch out! There might be a coconut coming to get you.

Balloons. Specifically kids. I was watching a video about how a lot of kids die from playing with balloons, you know how kids are all dramatic and breathe really hard in and out to blow them up? Sometimes they suck in so hard that they suck the balloon into their throat, lodging it in there. And cpr doesn't work once they stop breathing because you're just inflating and deflating the balloon in the throat and the air can't pass through. After that, relaxing by doing what I wanted to do (instead of rushing through other "important" things) was pure bliss.

Iirc the reason they're dangerous isn't that people aren't aware that Blue Ringed Octopus are deadly poisonous. It's because they're not aware they don't always have blue rings, they just show them when they're stressed. So people find little octopuses in tide pools and such and think they must be fine since they don't have any blue rings.

It gets worse. Our body has a protective function called oxygen hunger. That's the feeling of being suffocated that would wake us up if we experienced a lack of oxygen. But CO gas and certain other gases like helium bind to the same receptors like oxygen, so the body gets fooled and the oxygen hunger doesn't occur. So you fall asleep from lack of oxygen but never wake up again if you breathe such gases because you don't even feel how you suffocate. Also, CO is heavier than common air particles. It fills a room up like water would if it cant flow out. Oh, and another danger is burning wood or coal and not putting the fire out properly and not having a chimney. A bunch of young people suffocated when they brought a grill with glimmering coal inside a hut for warmth not realising that the coals emitted CO gas. They fell asleep while partying and never woke up again.

You should worry about both, and you should be just as diligent in climbing a ladder as you are when handling a firearm.

I lost my dad to him falling and hitting his head at a store. He was awake and aware at first, but by the time the ambulance got him to the ER, his brain bleed spread. He went into a coma for several months and though I can't describe the joy when he awoke from it, he was never close to the same again and never came home from various hospitals and care homes over the next year, where my mom and I spent time with him every day. I held on to hope for his recovery the whole time and when I eventually had to make the decision to unplug the machine when he went under again, the grief and regret and worry tore me up. There's never a day that I don't miss my strong but kind and gentle dad and wish my teen daughter had her grandpa to help her through these years. ❤🫂

ERRRRR this fails to recognise the difference between fatal accidents, culpable homicide and murder. Sure, even if fatal accidents occur in greater numbers, they're harder to control for and prevent, hence they are called 'accidents' meaning, something that just happened. Gun deaths, as we can see in the other five eyes countries, are totally preventable by simply having strict gun controls!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So many falls and accidents in the home are completely preventable if people took a second or two to consider the situation. When you get older, you need to maintain core muscle strength and do balance exercises if at all possible. Install grab bars in bathrooms and non-slip flooring. Use a proper step stool to reach things from a high shelf or cupboard rather than clambering onto a worktop like a monkey. Don't stand on a chair (especially a swivel chair!) to change a light bulb. Get into the habit of keeping stairways clear. Use suitable protective gear when using tools and respect anything that has rotating parts, is plugged into mains power or contains gas.

I fell down the stairs in my house the other day, right from the top thanks to hot wheels left on the top step, have now decided my son has it out for me! I have a hole in my head, I'm bruised everywhere - really massive dark blue bruises, and my stomach hasn't stopped hurting since - I feel like I've been hit by a bus. And I was relatively uninjured given what could've happened. So, of course I did the sensible thing and still went to a tattoo appointment two days ago for a four hour session - PSA - if you ever find yourself in a similar situation and feel bad cancelling your appointment last minute just bloody cancel it! 30 Deadly Everyday Things That Many People Are Not Aware Of, As Listed In This Online Thread Fights
Humans are squishy unless they aren't. Somehow we have evolved to either have the durability of a bouncy ball or a glass bauble and its a coin flip on whether you bounce or shatter.

So: Fights. People think it's like in the movies, and sure, maybe sometimes things go okay and you work it out and everythings chill, but if you pick a fight in real life you had better be very ready for the possibility that you could [end] someone, even (ESPECIALLY) if you don't mean to. If you shove someone and they fall wrong, they can die. If they hit their head, or YOU hit them in the head wrong (if you hit someone in the nose just right, a bone can pierce brain, the temple is a very vulnerable spot, etc), they can die. People don't always fight fair in real life, there's every chance they have a knife or keys or rings or even a gun, or they pick up a f*****g shovel and throw it at your head like that video that went viral several years ago. This isn't a "I'm a badass who could totally [end] someone" thing, it's more a survivor bias thing. On average? Yeah, you'll probably be okay. But I'd rather not take the chance, personally.

Manure. When it is collected in a poorly ventilated space and you climb down there for any reason, you can pass out from lack of air. If someone notices this and instead of calling for help, they just follow you, there can be more than one fatality.

Lyme disease is absolutely no joke & if left alone long enough, a brown recluse bite will do the kind of damage plastic surgery cannot repair...

Some spiders are extremely beneficial, no matter how much I hate the little dears... My dislike is well-founded, tho, as was bitten once and still bear the scar, decades later...

My mom had slightly elevated blood pressure....she ate healthy foods, walked every day, and had a major stroke at 55. She is still alive but severely disabled. Had to give first aid to some kid who bounced down a waterfall in the Smokey Mountains while he was trying to take a selfie. Had to send someone down trail to call 911 while we stabilized him. Darwin didn't get a disciple that day but he came close.

I know of a few things, all fire-related:

* Pinched electrical wires - having, for example, a table leg or something on top of a wire creates a hot spot that can eventually start a fire
* Toasters under cabinets - if you have a toaster on your countertop, and have cabinets mounted above that countertop, leaving the toaster directly under the cabinets while in use is also a fire hazard. be sure to pull it out from beneath the cabinets before use
* Not sure if this one is still unknown by most people, but I'll add it just in case - water does not put out a grease fire, it makes it worse because the grease/oil is less dense and floats on top of the water and continues to burn, so pouring water on a grease fire is likely to just spread the grease and fire around. baking soda, a lid/cover of some kind, or of course a fire extinguisher will all smother the fire without spreading it around

joshrice said:
Yes, but also the water vaporizes from the heat and explodes out of the oil creating a big plume of steam that can carry oil with it and create a huge fucking fireball. Absolutely do not use water on a grease fire. Put a metal lid on it (glass could break from the heat), and/or dump baking soda on it.

Every few years I get a fire safety training, or whatever it is called. There you learn how to operate a fire extinguisher. Which is not that hard, but it's good to learn what to do in a controlled environment when you're not in a panic. The trainers always show the grease fire explosion. They heat a bit of vegetable oil, set in on fire, and then pour water into it (with a loooong pole) Those fireballs are truly impressive and utterly terrifying. You have to see one to really understand what a bad combination water and burning oil is.

Elderberries are poisonous until you boil them. My mom works at a school where a teacher let some kids eat them because she didn’t know they were poisonous. Red puke everywhere. I also had a friend post a picture on Facebook of her son eating them.

Lima beans are another. They contain cyanide, but unlike other plants/plant parts (like apple seeds or peach pits) where it would be really difficult to consume enough to have an effect undercooked lima beans are pretty palatable. Modern, commercial, lima beans have a pretty low amount, but it still would only take a couple of pounds.

How do I know this? I used to snack on raw lima beans while I was gardening. Luckily I learned to stop doing that before I learned the hard way.

Alcohol.

Not only does it cause all the problems you already know about, but **less than half of the population are aware that alcohol has been proven to cause cancer**. The amount of people who know this of course varies depending on the demographic - a few years ago in the UK this number was actually only around 10%.

It's not a group 2b carcinogen (possibly causes cancer) like gasoline, or even a group 2a carcinogen (probably causes cancer) like red meat. Alcohol is a group 1 carcinogen, which means it is proven to cause cancer.

Running a power wire for a car audio amplifier in your door jamb. Every time you open and shut your door you are pinching the wire between two pieces of metal. Eventually, it wears through the insulation and if you are lucky the fuse blows or the battery explodes before your car catches on fire. The wire is supposed to be run through a rubber or plastic grommet in the firewall.

Space heaters can be very dangerous in general. Old ones don't have safety switches and can start a fire if they tip over on something flammable. Most are designed to pull as close as possible to the maximum current outlets are designed to deliver, putting a strain on the wiring in the wall, too.
