No matter where you live and how much of the world you have already seen, there’s always so much more out there to explore; it can take ages to properly acquaint yourself with one particular city, not to mention an entire country or a continent.

Luckily, there’s a way to familiarize yourself with what’s happening in certain territories—and quite large ones, too—in just a matter of a few seconds; and that’s the internet. Today we’re focusing on Europe and the interesting facts about it, as well as the beautiful places in it, as they have been presented by members of the ‘Europe‘ subreddit. Scroll down to find their posts—as well as Bored Panda’s interview with one of the subreddit’s moderators—on the list below and familiarize yourself better with one of the seven continents of the world.

Turkey is in Asia, not in Europe. Only a teeny tiny piece is in Europe, doesn't make it a European country.

Amazing and we never give them enough credit. They don't even do it because they are made too or it's the right thing to do. They do it without thinking and just for a 'good boy' and a ball. We do not give them enough resources time or credit.

“When Reddit first created subreddits, a lot of subreddits that focused on a specific place were created. Among those ones was also r/europe. The original moderators of that subreddit have long left the moderation team, and r/europe actually took some time to really pick up speed, but little by little, and urged by the need for a common place to learn news from all over the continent, it grew up to the current size of about 6 million subscribers,” one of the current moderators of the subreddit told Bored Panda, discussing how it all started.

Utrecht has the most lower level canals for delivering goods directly from the water into the storages. It is really beautiful, and often there are little restaurants where you can sit at that lower level at the canal. Really romantic!

No people just walk/bike/drive on the street level. The canal is for tourists and the garbage collectors' boat.

“Even if this is indeed a continent of 750 million people, in more than 50 countries, talking more than 250 different languages, there are a lot of things that unite us—and that includes dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, human rights and the rule of law,” the redditor shared.

“It also includes disparaging the various European bureaucracies, whether that's EU or otherwise. And each year, we get a pan-European festival of music and kitsch and fun in the Eurovision Song Contest. And all of that is heavily reflected in the content of the subreddit.”

I love the colors. It looks like it's out a children's toy world. On another post, a BP was livid, "Why the hell would you paint over bricks?" This. This is why you paint bricks. Just yesterday, I was in a beautiful American neighborhood and saw all the colorful brick buildings and loved it. (But the streets were all in a grid, not such a whimsy-inspiring mishmosh.)

The whole town is being moved right now. There is a giant iron mine under the city and the ground is now to unstable to keep the town in place. The big red church on the top of the hill is going to be moved to the new city. But most of the houses are getting demolished.

Discussing the influence of such online groups as the ‘Europe’ subreddit, the moderator shared that even just listening to people from other cultures is beneficial. “Finding out how much we have in common after all, even if we literally don't even speak the same language has got to be a positive influence,” they said.

In USA would need to change zoning laws that prevent grocery stores from being in residential neighborhoods. Nearest grocery to my house is over 2 kilometers away. I'm old and cannot walk the hills to get to it. Downhill there and uphill back with the groceries. Also no sidewalk most of the way. Stupid, stupid design of a town.

I know this isn't the same but my city banned non-taxi and public trans from our Market Street, which runs the length of downtown. It's SO MUCH safer and much more enjoyable as a pedestrian. They started doing "slow streets" throughout the year on other streets that temporarily became pedestrian only and it's great. They finally made it permanent for a section of road in our biggest park, which seems so late and obvious in hindsight.

Not really. London only dates back to 43CE. There are lots of places that are thousands of years older. Colchester claims to the the UK's oldest city. There's evidence of continuous occupation from the Neolithic all the way through to the present. London is a relative newbie when it comes to European cities.

And people say Planned Obsolescence is a myth 😠 People, we have the technology and engineering prowess to make almost ANY product built to last DECADES but unfortunately that's not PROFITABLE for the corporations/rich/billionaires. Therefore we(THEY) simply don't do it. Capitalism is our global economic system and the pursuit of maximizing profits by ANY means necessary will ALWAYS come first. An economic system that thrives on an unlimited growth model on a planet of finite resources is GUARANTEED to fail!

This not the only reason. People keep buying cheap stuff to be used once and binning it, because buying something new is cheaper. It is cheaper because it is manufactured by workers without any rights, with next to none payment and the factories poisoning water and air. The exact same thing manufactured in France, Germany, the Netherlands etc is being judged as "too expensive". This is creating poverty and trash mountains. Companies in the Netherlands plan to leave, becazse workers rights and demands and environmental rules, which let us enjoy our nature parks, beaches and gardens, are too expensive to produce products cheap enough to be sold.

In addition to permanent residents, Europe is brimming with visitors from all over the world. In the first half of last year, tourism in the European Union—which entails the majority of the countries located in Europe—reached the highest level in the past decade.

According to Eurostat, during the first half of 2023, there were 1193 million nights spent in tourist accommodations, which marked an increase of 11 million compared to the same period the year before.

If you’re curious about what city in Europe attracts the most visitors, it wouldn’t probably take you a lot of guesses to get it right; it’s Paris (at least based on 2022 data).

The city of love, good food, and the language that sounds so beautiful but can be so torturously difficult to master (trying to learn the numbers alone can make you want to wave the white flag) reportedly recorded roughly 19.4 million inbound tourist arrivals. Ranking just below Paris, London and Istanbul were popular destinations, too, with over 16 million inbound arrivals each.

Recently found a Kharkiv metro token in a "box of bits and pieces" left over from my last visit there in June 2012. Went online to see how bad the damage is and was appalled. Coming back to languages and French being a difficult one to learn, I might have been too quick—or too biased—to judge, as in the context of other languages, it falls within the category of the easiest ones in Europe for an English speaker to learn.

Other mother tongues in the same category—which reportedly take less than 24 weeks of learning to reach speaking and reading proficiency—are Spanish, Italian, and Norwegian, just to name a few.

The second hardest, requiring roughly 30 weeks, is German, followed by Polish and Lithuanian, just to name a couple, with 44 weeks, and Hungarian and Finnish with an undetermined number of weeks, as no one would probably last long enough to master something as difficult as this.

While languages in countries all over Europe are indeed fascinating, not many people choose to travel to—or within the bounds of—the continent just to hear them with their own ears. The majority of visitors arguably seek to explore some of the most popular landmarks, or on the contrary, the hidden gems unknown to the masses, and gain some unforgettable travel experience.

Those more interested in the popular sites, as seen in pictures online and TV screens, likely still have Paris in their minds; and for a reason, as it is home to the iconic Eiffel Tower—undeniably one of the most recognizable landmarks in Europe, if not in the entire world.

See ... if you claim promises nobody ever gave to you, if you act out on made-up threats ... well, NATO having two more members is the direct result of you, Diktatorewitsch, and of your stupid decisions. And - Taurus for Ukraine! Everything below nuclear, they should get in any quantity available without more questions of strings attached - the dangerous precedence that Putin succeeding would set isn't the only reason, but this alone is sufficient already, as are the rights of Ukrainian people to not live in a dictatory like Russia.

Romania is one of those countries where it either looks like a third world poverty kind of dirty, or beautiful like something out of a fairytale. Transilvania was lovely, Sibiu, Sighișoara, Târgu Mureș Brașov, etc, are stunning. Bucharest has it's charms in the more touristy areas, but outside of that it's not so nice. Then there's neighbourhoods there like the infamous Ferentari, which whilst cleaner now than it used to be, I'd still avoid like the plague. I'm yet to visit the Romanian Coast though. But the pictures made it look nice ;-; (then again I'm living in the UK, the government here pumps sewage into the sea, so... yea :/ )

While visiting the places in Europe—or elsewhere in the world, for that matter—is undoubtedly more fun to do firsthand, sometimes it simply might not be possible to. But that shouldn’t deter you from working on that bucket list, as it can still happen; and before it does, make use of the internet and browse whatever it is that interests you the most.

He crossed the Atlantic in 1980, travelling from Cape Cod to Brittany. D'Aboville previously built boats and organized races before undertaking this 3,500 mile trip, which he completed in 72 days. And our personal nut is sure he can build a bridge across sicily where studies demonstrated the single longest segment would wave across 10 meters due to winds. He says it’s safe for trains. 10 meters swinging left and right.

1 year ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

I'd ask if you're an engineer but I already know the answer. A deflection of 10 meters would result in a curvature of 0.35º and increase the distance by 3 cm. Temperature changes will have a far bigger effect. It's the frequency of the oscillations that will determine whether or not the it's feasible.

Translated from https://www.france-hotel-guide.com/fr/blog/prix-cafe-paris/ in 2023 : The average price of a coffee in Paris (out of more than 110 cafés) is €2.72. The cheapest coffee is 1€ and it is served by T-Kawa (13th arrondissement). The most expensive coffee in Paris costs €14 and to taste it you will have to go to the WINDO Skybar (17th arrondissement). So, 1.2 for a coffee dispenser makes sense

Not that. Look at the population of Paris. No other French city has a population over 1million. France is very Paris-centric whereas in Italy, it’s quite spread out. But Italy does have a North/South divide itself. Rich in the North and poor in the South.

It took centuries for the kings of France to create a unified country. Previously, France was divided into duchies and other kingdoms, Navarre, Normandy, Brittany Guyenne... The 100 Years' War shows this well. In truth, “total” French power dates from Louis 14, and his famous phrase, l’état c’est moi (I am the state). The rest of the story, from the revolution to today via Napoleon, builds a country very centered on the central power which is in Paris.

In context to a nuclear power plant: It cannot work without lots and lots of cold, fresh water. So not only getting hold of the uranium and a stable and safe supply of them, unlimited access to cold water and space to dump hot water is essential.

This is one of the horrid holiday parks, NOT a residential area, they grow like cancer, destroy the coast and nature areas. They are empty during the majority of the year. I live in an area like that in the Southwest, completely roompotted. We need affordable houses for locals, not "cities" with 350 €500.000+ mansions as second and holiday homes, empty during 8 months of the year.

Nuclear power is a perfect bridge energy source to help us get off of fossil fuels and fully transitioned to renewables! Oil, gas, and coal are literally destroying our livable environment. Nuclear power can be generated safely in the 21st century. Sincerely, a Solar Panel Project Planner

... at least, this is misleading. Ending nuclear power generation is not in question among "environmentalists", but there's a campaign acting as such run by those running the reactors as well. As the exhaust gases are emitted elsewhere (fuel elements don't just grow somewhere, they take a lot of energy to be made), they can fool dumb people into believing it was clean, which it isn't. It's also dangerous, leaves behind the most dangerous trash there is, and is a huge waste of public money, in order to amass private money. On top of that, having nuclear power plants seems like a dikc comparison - "we can employ the energy released by braking atoms apart!". If everything truly is taken into account, it's neither climate neutral, nor even close to. And has it's additional issues, of which some aren't even theoretically solved, let alone in practice.

This picture and comment is misleading. In Germany there are no environmentalists who fight for nuclear power. But there are interest lead groups who do, many of them denying climate change in fear of blackouts due to renewable energies. These people are no environmentalists.

In Germany there were massive protests against nuclear power plants in the 90s. You saw "Atomkraft nein danke" sticker everywhere. And it's not only about the GAU, but also a lot about the storage of the waste.

"... but also a lot about the storage of the waste" *sigh* We were well on the way to designing and implementing a solution to this, but the politicians and the NIMBYs scuttled it just when we were at the finish line. [disclaimer: I used to work on the Yucca Mountain Project.] Guess rusting barrels sitting behind a chain link fence is a better, safer solution than a geological repository...

Apart from the risks as happened in Sellafield, Fukushima, Tschernobyl (to name a few), a densely populated country like Germany cannot afford these risks. Nuclear power needs lots and lots of cool water, which cannot be provided by the rivers in Germany. Germany is trying in vain to find a safe place to store the nuclear waste created during the past 50 years, without success yet. Again, in a densely populated country with health and safety norms in place, this waste cannot be dumped in the next quarry. Germany did not "crank up coal", to the contrary, it is to be phased out. Unfortunately old contracts exist, I grew up next to the hole in the picture, it can be seen from the house of friends.
