No matter where you live and how much of the world you have already seen, there’s always so much more out there to explore; it can take ages to properly acquaint yourself with one particular city, not to mention an entire country or a continent.
Luckily, there’s a way to familiarize yourself with what’s happening in certain territories—and quite large ones, too—in just a matter of a few seconds; and that’s the internet. Today we’re focusing on Europe and the interesting facts about it, as well as the beautiful places in it, as they have been presented by members of the ‘Europe‘ subreddit. Scroll down to find their posts—as well as Bored Panda’s interview with one of the subreddit’s moderators—on the list below and familiarize yourself better with one of the seven continents of the world.

This Dog You See Helped Find People In The Earthquake Area In Turkey
Often dogs are treated badly in Turkey. Hope it helps people to understand how precious dogs are.
I don’t know about the rest of turkey, but in Istanbul at least they are well treated, and so are cats
Load More Replies...Surprise! There are dogs across the globe trained to find humans in natural disasters and man made disasters.
Amazing and we never give them enough credit. They don't even do it because they are made too or it's the right thing to do. They do it without thinking and just for a 'good boy' and a ball. We do not give them enough resources time or credit.
“When Reddit first created subreddits, a lot of subreddits that focused on a specific place were created. Among those ones was also r/europe. The original moderators of that subreddit have long left the moderation team, and r/europe actually took some time to really pick up speed, but little by little, and urged by the need for a common place to learn news from all over the continent, it grew up to the current size of about 6 million subscribers,” one of the current moderators of the subreddit told Bored Panda, discussing how it all started.
Early Morning Foggy Gdańsk, Poland

If anything has made me want to go to Poland it is this picture right here, just breathtakingly beautiful 😍
Utrecht, Netherlands
I live near Utrecht and to see sights like this there you have to get up very early before the City is teeming with hordes of people
Nieuwegracht is not that crowded.

Big deal. This happens whenever our street drain backs up. (/joke)
Don't know anything about this area or much about Europe. Do people use this canal to move up and down this area? Looks like there is not much room to walk on the sidewalk.
No people just walk/bike/drive on the street level. The canal is for tourists and the garbage collectors' boat.

“It also includes disparaging the various European bureaucracies, whether that's EU or otherwise. And each year, we get a pan-European festival of music and kitsch and fun in the Eurovision Song Contest. And all of that is heavily reflected in the content of the subreddit.”

Load More Replies...I love the colors. It looks like it's out a children's toy world. On another post, a BP was livid, "Why the hell would you paint over bricks?" This. This is why you paint bricks. Just yesterday, I was in a beautiful American neighborhood and saw all the colorful brick buildings and loved it. (But the streets were all in a grid, not such a whimsy-inspiring mishmosh.)
This is what Kiruna looked like a couple of years ago. The entire city has been relocated due to the nearby mining industry.
The whole town is being moved right now. There is a giant iron mine under the city and the ground is now to unstable to keep the town in place. The big red church on the top of the hill is going to be moved to the new city. But most of the houses are getting demolished.
If this is correct, what a shame. Too bad there isn’t a way to stabilize the ground.
Load More Replies...If so, I'm so sorry y'all were forced to relocate and lose your homes. Did the ppl in charge of the mining disaster pay 100% for everyone to both move AND have new homes built when they moved the city? If not, that's the biggest betrayal and 'f**k you" I've heard in a little while :(

TheAmericanAmerican, I totally agree. This is now a place where people would want to walk, would want to meet, and spend time. And it's been done by paint, trees & planting, seats, and pedestrianisation.

Awww my City. Yup we have A lot of modernised areas. Main Problem is that in the City Center is not really safe to walk after like 21:00. In some places in the daylight even. I am a social ist, but I would kick our half the people that live in the Center. With the, it will never be nice and safe here
I know this isn't the same but my city banned non-taxi and public trans from our Market Street, which runs the length of downtown. It's SO MUCH safer and much more enjoyable as a pedestrian. They started doing "slow streets" throughout the year on other streets that temporarily became pedestrian only and it's great. They finally made it permanent for a section of road in our biggest park, which seems so late and obvious in hindsight.
Looks way better. Hope no one got priced out of rent due to some paint and park benches..
In most cases they kick the people out And sell the Apartments for quite some money. The people living in the center mosgly got Apartments for free at some point And only had to pay for water electricity etc. My family was kicked out like that some 20 years ago

Not really. London only dates back to 43CE. There are lots of places that are thousands of years older. Colchester claims to the the UK's oldest city. And people say Planned Obsolescence is a myth 😠 People, we have the technology and engineering prowess to make almost ANY product built to last DECADES but unfortunately that's not PROFITABLE for the corporations/rich/billionaires. Therefore we(THEY) simply don't do it. Capitalism is our global economic system and the pursuit of maximizing profits by ANY means necessary will ALWAYS come first. An economic system that thrives on an unlimited growth model on a planet of finite resources is GUARANTEED to fail!
This not the only reason. People keep buying cheap stuff to be used once and binning it, because buying something new is cheaper. It is cheaper because it is manufactured by workers without any rights, with next to none payment and the factories poisoning water and air. The exact same thing manufactured in France, Germany, the Netherlands etc is being judged as "too expensive". This is creating poverty and trash mountains. Companies in the Netherlands plan to leave, becazse workers rights and demands and environmental rules, which let us enjoy our nature parks, beaches and gardens, are too expensive to produce products cheap enough to be sold.

If you’re curious about what city in Europe attracts the most visitors, it wouldn’t probably take you a lot of guesses to get it right; it’s Paris (at least based on 2022 data).
The city of love, good food, and the language that sounds so beautiful but can be so torturously difficult to master (trying to learn the numbers alone can make you want to wave the white flag) reportedly recorded roughly 19.4 million inbound tourist arrivals. Ranking just below Paris, London and Istanbul were popular destinations, too, with over 16 million inbound arrivals each.

Kharkiv Pride In Kharkiv Metro. A City, Bombed Almost Every Day
While Putler hides in his bunker. I always laughed my a*s of at those images of Putler riding bare-chested. He's a horrible horseman, slumped over like a sack of potatoes in the saddle, no skill whatsoever, and always riding a tiny little pony that looks half-asleep. Big little man, lol. Does he think that impresses people who know horsemanship?
Recently found a Kharkiv metro token in a "box of bits and pieces" left over from my last visit there in June 2012. Went online to see how bad the damage is and was appalled. The stupid thing is that many eastern Ukrainians are ethnically Russian so essentially Putin is attacking his fellow Russians!

Coming back to languages and French being a difficult one to learn, I might have been too quick—or too biased—to judge, as in the context of other languages, it falls within the category of the easiest ones in Europe for an English speaker to learn.
Other mother tongues in the same category—which reportedly take less than 24 weeks of learning to reach speaking and reading proficiency—are Spanish, Italian, and Norwegian, just to name a few.
The second hardest, requiring roughly 30 weeks, is German, followed by Polish and Lithuanian, just to name a couple, with 44 weeks, and Hungarian and Finnish with an undetermined number of weeks, as no one would probably last long enough to master something as difficult as this.

While languages in countries all over Europe are indeed fascinating, not many people choose to travel to—or within the bounds of—the continent just to hear them with their own ears. The majority of visitors arguably seek to explore some of the most popular landmarks, or on the contrary, the hidden gems unknown to the masses, and gain some unforgettable travel experience.
Those more interested in the popular sites, as seen in pictures online and TV screens, likely still have Paris in their minds; and for a reason, as it is home to the iconic Eiffel Tower—undeniably one of the most recognizable landmarks in Europe, if not in the entire world.

I'd ask if you're an engineer but I already know the answer. A deflection of 10 meters would result in a curvature of 0.35º and increase the distance by 3 cm. It took centuries for the kings of France to create a unified country. Previously, France was divided into duchies and other kingdoms, Navarre, Normandy, Brittany Guyenne... The 100 Years' War shows this well. In truth, “total” French power dates from Louis 14, and his famous phrase, l’état c’est moi (I am the state). The rest of the story, from the revolution to today via Napoleon, builds a country very centered on the central power which is in Paris.

Coal is both an energy-inefficient and highly polluting fuel... a country would have to be insane to rely on it in 2024.
Nuclear power is a perfect bridge energy source to help us get off of fossil fuels and fully transitioned to renewables! Oil, gas, and coal are literally destroying our livable environment. Nuclear power can be generated safely in the 21st century. Sincerely, a Solar Panel Project Planner
Would you like to live next to an old mine filled with nuclear waste?

... at least, this is misleading. Ending nuclear power generation is not in question among "environmentalists", but there's a campaign acting as such run by those running the reactors as well. As the exhaust gases are emitted elsewhere (fuel elements don't just grow somewhere, they take a lot of energy to be made), they can fool dumb people into believing it was clean, which it isn't. It's also dangerous, leaves behind the most dangerous trash there is, and is a huge waste of public money, in order to amass private money. On top of that, having nuclear power plants seems like a dikc comparison - "we can employ the energy released by braking atoms apart!". If everything truly is taken into account, it's neither climate neutral, nor even close to. And has it's additional issues, of which some aren't even theoretically solved, let alone in practice.
This picture and comment is misleading. In Germany there are no environmentalists who fight for nuclear power. But there are interest lead groups who do, many of them denying climate change in fear of blackouts due to renewable energies. These people are no environmentalists.
Here in this post we have people protesting the closing of nuclear power plants but two post up we have people protesting against a nuclear power plant we made.

In Germany there were massive protests against nuclear power plants in the 90s. You saw "Atomkraft nein danke" sticker everywhere. And it's not only about the GAU, but also a lot about the storage of the waste.
"... but also a lot about the storage of the waste" *sigh* We were well on the way to designing and implementing a solution to this, but the politicians and the NIMBYs scuttled it just when we were at the finish line. [disclaimer: I used to work on the Yucca Mountain Project.] Guess rusting barrels sitting behind a chain link fence is a better, safer solution than a geological repository...

Apart from the risks as happened in Sellafield, Fukushima, Tschernobyl (to name a few), a densely populated country like Germany cannot afford these risks. Nuclear power needs lots and lots of cool water, which cannot be provided by the rivers in Germany. Germany is trying in vain to find a safe place to store the nuclear waste created during the past 50 years, without success yet. Again, in a densely populated country with health and safety norms in place, this waste cannot be dumped in the next quarry. Germany did not "crank up coal", to the contrary, it is to be phased out. Unfortunately old contracts exist, I grew up next to the hole in the picture, it can be seen from the house of friends.

There's more to Europe then these pictures, it doesn't do it justice. Maybe start a series for all parts of the world?
Hell, if this post had 5000 pictures from Europe it still would be just scratching the surface...

Interesting photos let down by the headline. There are about 50 countries in Europe, with many more cultures and ethnic groups, as well as thousands of years of history, so 'no other place like Europe' is rather silly and reductive.
