People like to stand out from the crowd. Be unique and act differently. And it’s well and fine when you’re a teenager still building your personality and finding what you like and don’t like. But this struggle to not be like others to get attention gets stale really quickly when you’re an adult. You realize that the ‘not like other people’ phase is just that – a phase, and it seems pretty cringy in real life.

The I’m The Main Character community gives a pretty healthy dose of shaming to those guilty of constantly wanting to be the center of attention. It’s a subreddit with over 1.3 million members who like to roast self-absorbed people. I mean, if they were foolish enough to post their main character syndrome behavior, they need to be able to take the ridicule, right?

Bored Panda also reached out to Alexander Danvers, Ph.D., a social psychologist and Director of Treatment Outcomes at Sierra Tucson, who researches emotions and social interactions.

We asked him how professionals would describe 'Main Character Syndrome,' why some people act this way, and whether we all have some of that main character energy in us. After all, we're all the main characters of our lives, aren't we?

Tesla Owner Thought They Were The Main Character…they Were Wrong

onemintyisland Report

The popularity of the I'm The Main Character subreddit is a testament to how people detest those who publicly act like they're at the center of the world. The community also has one condition for its posts: they have to feature "deliberate attention-seeking behavior, entitlement, or individuals thinking they are more privileged than anyone else."

The subreddit is also against discrimination, harassment, racism, misogyny, bigotry, or personal attacks. Even if the main characters featured on the subreddit are extremely rude, the rules ask members not to harass them on their social media. The same goes for discussions among members: "There is always a real human with emotions behind the screen," the group cites Reddiquette.

To learn more about 'Main Character Syndrome' from a psychology professional's perspective, we reached out to Dr. Alex Danvers. Because the term gets thrown around online quite frequently, we were curious to know whether psychologists and mental health experts characterize it as a medical diagnosis.

"'Main Character Syndrome' isn't a medical diagnosis," Danvers tells us. "It's a pop culture term, which means it has a looser definition, and people can use it in different ways. Typically, I see it used to mean that someone sees their life as a story—a TV drama or a romantic comedy—and puts themselves in the starring role."

Dr. Danvers says that such a mindset can change the way a person thinks. Sometimes in big ways, sometimes in small ways. "At the problematic end, it can make the person too focused on themselves, always trying to shift conversations and social situations to center around the drama of their personal story."

"This can cause someone to overlook other people’s thoughts or feelings, treating them as supporting characters. That can feel, to friends, like a lack of empathy or rudeness."

"But it can also lead to behaviors that are pretty common and less problematic," Danvers continues. "Like trying to present yourself as positively as possible or focusing on documenting your life on social media over engaging in the moment."

Danvers also notes that people engaging in narcissistic and entitled behavior might be masking other feelings, like feeling insecure or like they're not in control. "If someone is giving big main character energy, there's probably something deeper going on, and there are likely aspects of their life they aren't happy with," the social psychologist explains.

In recent years, there has been much discussion about how people do not know how to act in public spaces anymore. Concertgoers keep throwing things at celebrities during concerts, and kids are destroying testers and being mean to Sephora employees. Did we forget how to act when we're not at home?

"The pandemic made a lot of people feel more anxious and less connected," Alex Danvers says. Since unhappiness and anxiety in daily life can lead to narcissistic behavior, he agrees that the pandemic and social media play a role in how we conduct ourselves in public spaces.

"Depending on the way you use social media, it can be very anxiety-provoking," Danvers observes. "People do a lot of self-comparison there and can find themselves wanting. Becoming the main character of the story of your life is a way of using fantasy to cope with a harsh world."

"Right now, the world feels very uncertain and potentially dangerous to a lot of people," Dr. Danvers invites us to sympathize with the main characters. "There are wars, political instability, concerns about disease, and concerns about harms from climate change. These are real things that produce real anxiety, and in daily life, it often feels like we as individuals can't take action to meaningfully improve things."

Danvers says that people's self-absorbed behavior can become a way to deal with those problems. "That's when fantasy can come in as a protective measure—you might want to imagine that you're the hero in a scripted story because things always work out for them. What becomes important is the drama and learning the life lesson that the 'episode' was meant to teach."

That said, Dr. Danvers cautions against losing yourself in that kind of fantasy. "Of course, life doesn't come in episodes with conflicts that neatly resolve themselves, and this worldview can mess up people's real relationships with their real friends and family."

The term 'Main Character Syndrome' is weird in a way. Because, when you think about it, aren't we all the main characters of our story? "In a general sense, we are the main characters of our lives," Danvers somewhat agrees. "Like a novel written from the first-person perspective, we can only really know our own thoughts and experience our own lives."

But those with 'Main Character Syndrome' wish to be main characters not just in their lives. "They think about someone who is more focused on crafting their own personal story than on paying attention to what's going on with their friends and communities," Dr. Danvers explains the difference. On the other hand, Dr. Danvers also says that thinking of yourself as a main character can certainly be empowering. "If you see yourself as important, you might be more willing to take good care of yourself and treat your values as important. That can be a positive change, especially for people who might otherwise feel depressed."

"The key is balancing a healthy confidence in yourself against the need to be aware of how much space you're taking up and making sure you leave room for others in your story."

I listened to a programme about this whole issue and how humiliating and difficult it is for larger people to travel. They are treated with disdain and annoyance by everyone around them. The assumption is that if they only 'just ate less pies' (because of course they hadn't thought of that) then everyone's life would be a lot easier. One woman said her one moment of levity was when she was on a flight with an international rugby player, or possibly an American football player, who was huge. He was very tall and very wide, and one seat was no good for him either. They were able to bond over their difficulties, and people did get annoyed being sat next to him too, although I doubt he was subjected to the judgement she was.

I'm fat and tallish. I traveled weekly for years. I did what I had to do to avoid impacting others travels. I usually joked with people apologizing they got stuck near a fat dude. Chatted for a little if they wanted and usually all was cool. Some might have gone home and talked c**p about getting stuck next to me, but meh whatever. I could fit in a single seat/ belt though I guess. I would always commiserate if I got stuck next to a fellow larger human.

Or maybe, seeing that something like 40% of Americans are obese, airlines should make seats larger, so people can sit comfortably. Everyone would enjoy having some extra space, with out the disphoria and bodyshaming.

How come no one here is talking about having to sit next to a person who is allowed to sit in only one seat but doesn't fit??? The rows are tiny enough that you throw in someone who is obviously spilling over into the next seat and you have to sit in only half the seat you paid for? Madness! It's difficult enough to even sit next to average sized people without throwing in body mass as a factor.

I used to issue "Certificates to Fly " for persons who were stretcher cases or who needed medical or personal attendants. Airlines have a special spot near the read entrance. This takes three rows (nine seats are folded back). The patient is put on a stretcher that locks into the floor of the plane and there are curtains for privacy. They must pay for nine seats and more if they have to have a medical escort or relative with them. Obesity is a medical diagnosis. It the person cannot sit in a single seat, I see no reason why they cannot require a medical certificate and have the passenger pay for it. There are a number of conditions that we will not certify: severe anemia, pregnant 36+ weeks (need sonogram), heart attack less than 4 weeks earlier, Newborn less than 2 weeks old, mental illness that is disturbing to others, less than 48 hours since SCUBA diving. One couple who had been snorkeling died from this. If a person needs oxygen a generator is allowed but not tanks.

If she can get away with it, then I want a half-priced seat because I’m thin and don’t take up much room. Gotta get my passport ready, as I’m flying around the world at half-price! I hope the airlines make sure the other slender person who shares my seat with me likes to nap on flights, please! Thanks!

Yes! This! I am a slim person. The weight of me and my luggage combined can frequently be less than the passenger sitting next to me, for example, my partner. I would like to see airlines offer me a larger luggage allowance or even a discount for travelling light. Travelling with no checked luggage is usually cheaper.

If you want extra space, book two seats. If she's an experienced traveler she must know what size most seats are.

There should be a maximum total weight for you and your luggage. If you're the size of a small planet like this woman (which is a choice), you may bring carry-on luggage only. If you're an average person, you can bring a full size checked in suitcase (as an example).

We should provide larger seats for our plus sized pals. The second regular seat, however, should not be free. Unless I also get a free seat for my feet or something. I like to sit sideways because I'm fairly tall.

It is, however, unclear at many airlines HOW to book a second seat if you're fat. How to not get them separated, how to have them assigned to the same person, etc

This story is false and completely misleading. This lady paid two seats because she knew she would take up that much space for herself. SHE PAID FOR THOSE TWO SEATS. Yet, she was told she needed to give up one of her seats, ONE SHE HAD PAID FOR. https://nypost.com/2024/01/23/lifestyle/im-obese-and-refused-to-give-up-my-second-seat-on-a-plane-for-a-toddler/

This is real.... I saw a YouTube video of this entitled woman's battle to have the 2nd seat free.... and she brags about how much guys like her this ....FAT. Not only does she want a free extra seat but she wants the airlines to make the aisles wider... she is so fat she has trouble going down the aisle SIDEWAYS.

OMGosh - You think FREE - you should pay double for the one you have and definitely full price for any extra space you need. It is not the airline responsibility for your weight and size. It is yours.

Her morbid obesity is entirely of her own doing. I do not pity those who become morbidly obese and refuse any and all help and insist that they are "perfectly healthy". Do some medications and conditions make becoming obese "easier"? Yes. But the vast majority of morbidly obese people in America do not fall under those categories - they fall under the "over-sugared and over-caloric intake" category. I should know, I have a family full of them.

I have read other BP threads of people that have demanded a plus size person give up the extra seat they bought and paid for, knowing that only one seat wouldn't cut it and make the person next to them uncomfortable. But that's not good enough....they should turn over an empty seat anyway?

As big person I don't mind buying two tickets (although you should realise that it is 99% impossible to lose weight once you have reached a certain size and we aren't going away so it's time there were bigger seats for us). But I want two seats I can use, if it has a fixed arm down the middle you can naff off.

I have many, many, many morbidly obese family members. It's actually easier to lose "larger amounts" of weight when you are obese/morbidly obese. It's when you lose the initial 100 or so lbs that it starts getting more difficult, as your body has adjusted/become accustomed to lower calorie counts and exercise. THAT'S when it gets "impossible". Saying it's "99% impossible to lose weight once you have reached a certain size" is completely untrue. If you don't want to believe my personal familial experiences, Google "Arthur DDP Yoga" and behold how a 300-lb man lost 100 lbs in 6 months just by doing modified yoga stretches/exercises and controlling what he ate.

It has to be right in the middle of the plane too. If it's too far back the plane just keeps on trying to rise. If she sits on the right hand side the plane just goes in a big circle.
