People Are Sharing Examples Of ‘Urban Hell’ That Look Like A Dystopian Movie But Are Sadly Real (45 New Pics)
Examples of spectacular architecture can really take one's breath away; but so can instances of dwellings far from dazzling. With the population growing at an unstoppable rate, accommodating all of people’s needs is by no means an easy task, which can lead to ideas that look like proper solutions to some, but to others, they might look like ‘Urban Hell’.
Dedicated to “the downsides of modern development”, in their own words, the ‘Urban Hell’ community sheds light on some of the most depressing-looking buildings, poor infrastructure decisions, and constructions that simply don’t match the environment, among other debacles. We have put some of them on this list for you today, so scroll down to browse them and see for yourself how unfortunate some architectural decisions can be.
To learn more about the dos and don'ts when it comes to modern development and architecture, Bored Panda turned to an expert, the CEO and founder of ‘Architecture Hunter’, Amanda Ferber, who was kind enough to answer a few of our questions. Scroll down to find her insight in the text below.

Urban Art In Belgrade
Mr city eats nature. This is cool and relevant if I'm reading it right.
this is really on point - even down to the guys teeth being huge buildings
My home town no 1 on the list of urban hells, don't know if I should be proud or ashamed
How many times have you walked past something that made you stop dead in your tracks because of how grand it looks? Maybe a series of glass skyscrapers against the backdrop of a clear blue sky or a newly built edifice so ginormous, you need to take a minute or two just to comprehend its size?
These are just a couple examples of how society adapts to the growing needs of a growing population, which surpassed 8 billion people roughly a year ago, in November 2022. Currently more than three times larger than it was in the mid-twentieth century, it is estimated to hit 9.7 billion in 2050 and surpass 10 billion before the mid-2080s, the UN reports.
That poses the question, how will we all fit? And while there might not be one answer to this, it's safe to assume that it might call for at least a few more buildings.
Hong Kong's Dismal Cage Homes House Thousands Of People
We have nearly eliminated cage farming for chickens - now let's do the same for humans.
Sadly cage farming for animals (including pigs and chickens) is still rife, even in developed countries. No living being, human or otherwise should be housed in a cage. Especially in 2023!

I imagine they want to be able to put their stuff in a safe space and be able to sleep safely as well. Homeless shelters aren't safe. As horrible as this looks, if I would end up homeless I would prefer this over the street or a homeless shelter where anyone can sneak up on me. No, it's not a house, it a room or apartment. Often here, those who lived in the streets have some issues which makes it hard for them to (take) care for a place. This is a safer step up from a shelter.

Created nearly exactly a decade ago, the ‘Urban Hell’ subreddit is dedicated to modern development. However, instead of focusing on how it can help solve certain problems of modern society, it sheds light on some of its less positive attributes. As the moderators put it themselves, it’s a place for photographs of “all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit”.
The subreddit invites its members to join for aesthetic appreciation of the less glamorized side of cities, towns, villages, and areas both rural and suburban; and over 1.2 million members have already accepted the invitation. “We welcome any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development,” the description reads, as the members share pictures of the most upsetting examples of modern development they can find in their galleries.
Delhi, India
With 169 billionaires in India, they should be shamed into spending some of their wealth in cleaning up their own country
Indian here. Trust me billionaire are not the problem . It the attitude of the common people. You can spend trillion of dollers or rupees to clean this up but can't change the mind set of people they won't think twice before littering. That said india is huge and diverse and mindset of people change from state to state so don't think every where in india is like this. But delhi yah it is like this and bihar and up. Stay the f**k away from this states .

I saw a lot of this in Bangladesh as well. When you’re not wealthy and uneducated and all you know is what’s around you everyday, this happens. You can’t see the bigger picture. And knowing how you contribute to the bigger picture is nearly impossible.

Homeless In Phoenix, Arizona - The Hottest City In The USA
An utter disgrace for one of the most developed and wealthiest countries on the planet. I remember when I went to San Francisco and witnessed more homeless on a single block than I had witnessed in my entire life living in the UK.
I believe that California still has the highest rate of homeless people. Housing is so outrageously overpriced in parts of the U.S. and with inflation and lack of affordable healthcare, more and more people are being forced into homelessness in the U.S.. It is truly sad and deplorable.
Load More Replies...This, here and other cities, is the result of the unchecked opioid epidemic. Over time it has morphed. Fentanyl (cheaper and stronger) replaced the pills and now xylazine is competing with fentanyl. Others, like those working but still unhoused, have been forced out by crazy high rent partially due to huge investment companies buying up rental property. And in both cases, it's clear the government gives zero f***s.
I lived in Phoenix for 30 years. There are homeless shelters for those who wish to be there. I lived across the street from a park that was a homeless camp. I can tell you that many of these folks are homeless because they are on drugs and choose not to go to a shelter because they cant do their drugs there. What you see in this pic is the homeless encampment down town. Space and tents are provided and there are even small tent shops selling toiletries and food.
This picture is most likely several years old as it is now neat and orderly with specific area roped off, trash cans provided and emptied. There have been efforts to clean up areas like this pic. See photos https://images.app.goo.gl/8q7ZB6E2xamCGmpp7
Load More Replies...Live in phoenix. That is an OLD photo. The homeless know how to manage around the heat. Before anyone jumps on anything, have any of you actually talked to someone homeless on the streets or worked in out reach? Because I have. Some have actually said they don't want to follow rules of supportive housing or work for another person. They consider their situation to be their freedom.
I think the "rules" are part of the issue. Housing should be a basic human right as well as a public health issue. There have been huge outbreaks of diseases here due to no proper toilets or hand washing in homeless encampments. Properly housed people stand a better chance of getting sober and getting proper mental health care than someone who is transient.
Load More Replies...Arizona's homeless problem has been exacerbated by investment corporations (often out of state) buying up apartments and houses, evicting tenants, then reselling/re-renting them for exorbitant prices. Legal/illegal immigration is adding additional pressure. Increase taxes to pay for housing? Sure - are you going to pay? Arizona's pay scale lags behind much of the nation and there's little support for public schools. Housing for the homeless is a low priority.
I find it odd that nobody keeps track of how many homeless die in these cities from the extreme heat or the extreme cold. Guess their numbers don't count. It might make the politicians in those cities look bad.
In order for a structure not to end up on the ‘Urban Hell’ subreddit as an example of the downside of modern development, there are some factors the architects ought to take into consideration. “In an area with an established urban landscape, it's crucial to take existing architectural elements into account,” the CEO and founder of ‘Architecture Hunter’, Amanda Ferber, told Bored Panda.
“What's the average building height? Is there a prevailing architectural style? Are there historic buildings in the vicinity? In such a context, introducing a design that sharply contrasts with the surroundings can be too disruptive. In a pristine, untouched environment, this consideration becomes even more delicate and challenging. Many architects positively opt for natural materials, which can be a more harmonious fit with the natural surroundings, showing respect for the environment.”
Trees, I See
I am a too embarrassed to suggest alternate uses for these decorations when the city is through with them. 🙀
These look like rain water collectors to me. The rain comes down the side of the "tree" and is caught in that bottom lip thing, then directed down through the "trunk"
This looks like a desert landscape where it may not be cost effective or sustainable to have real trees.
So plant something that's native to the desert there instead?

Another important factor to consider when it comes to modern development is how the project might age throughout the years. “At times, a project might enthusiastically embrace the dominant ‘trends’ of its era, which, as years pass, can render it unmistakably ‘dated’,” Ferber pointed out. “Consequently, newer architectural developments may stand in contrast, not because they lack appeal, but because the existing structure was tailor-made for that specific period.”

I mean, it has all the problems of a densely packed semi-urban community and the reason the people are there is inhumane, but it seems the UN is doing it's best under the circumstances - it could be waaay worse,
Load More Replies...Serious question: how hard would it be to turn this into an actual city? So or so They have to bring water, food and energy to this place. Why not permanent?
The government in Kenya probably doesn't have an interest in building a city for refugees and the UN doesn't have the funds nor the permission to operate the necessary infrastructure for a whole city
Load More Replies...Two things. 1. Have any government take a census of this camp to see how many refugees there is? 2. In the Bible when the Israelites left Egypt the Bible at Exodus 12:37 said there were 600,00 men besides children and vast mixed company. It has been estimated there probably over 3 million people that left Egypt. It was estimated the camp was 5 miles long and about 2.5 to 3 miles wide. This camp is much larger than the Israelites. Of course the Israelites were organized. Not sure how organized this camp is. Just from the look of this picture it does not look very organize. It looks scatter.
Mansion On Top Of Building In Bangalore. Dear God
Structurally this must be unsafe surely? Aren’t the floors all designed below to just hold themselves? Or was the building below built in mind that a great big house was going to be built on top of this? You couldn’t pay me to go in that building!
No way of guessing from the photo, but it could easily have been planned that way. Why not have a fancy house built on top of your new skyscraper if you're the property developer? At least you won't have neighbours complaining about the looks of it.

“It's important to note that architecture is distinct from fashion,” the CEO of Architecture Hunter continued. “While a piece of clothing can, though it shouldn't, be discarded, architecture tends to be enduring unless it's demolished or undergoes a significant renovation.
“Poorly designed architecture can undermine a city, fostering insecurity; it can exclude people, or, in some cases, it can lead to significant environmental issues—as seen in the well-known instance of the building in London with its curved mirrored façade, which generated extremely hot areas, to the extent of melting cars in the city.”

In a recent interview with Bored Panda, Ferber emphasized that it's essential to consider the environment and the surroundings when planning a new construction project. “Whether the location is already densely developed or completely untouched, this concern is valid, but it may require different design approaches. To make a project stand out, it doesn't necessarily need to clash with the existing environment; the goal should be to create a positive highlight rather than a negative one.
“Architecture should embrace a welcoming, non-aggressive approach,” she added. “It should prioritize inclusivity and be meticulously crafted to enhance usability for people. Aesthetic considerations are also integral to design, naturally. When assessing an architectural project, it mustn't be examined in isolation but rather in harmony with its immediate environment.”
Covering The Slums With Green Walls
Was this just prior to destroying them? Thousands lost their homes and all of their belongings just before the last G20 summit because the Indian government beautified Delhi by destroying the slums.
I really hate what they did to prepare for the G20. Kicking homeless people out of the city, covering them up or building walls around them. Even the street dogs were chased away from the main areas or picked up and put in the wrong place later. So much for 'one family' and what not

I mean, I guess if the waterfall uses the same recycled water. It's better than pumping in fresh. Still uses a lot of energy though.
I keep thinking of the PSI of the water pressure at the bottom, though! 😵💫
Terminal velocity of water droplets isn't that high. It's about 10m/s and it's reached in about a second (first 5m). Mind you that's a single droplet not a bucketful let alone a waterfall's worth... But basically, this thing will hit you equally hard after 20m or 50m or 100m height.
Load More Replies...Even though the growing population might call for a growing number of construction sites, adding buildings in some areas can be significantly more difficult than elsewhere. Take Mumbai in India, for example; home to over 21 million people, it is one of the most densely populated cities in the world (even though far from the number one).
According to Statista’s 2023 data, boasting just over 24,000 inhabitants per square kilometer (roughly 0,386 of a square mile), Mumbai isn’t even in the top ten. Though it’s not far from it, either, as it is now 11th on the list, with a less than 400 people difference separating it from the city of Muzaffarnagar—also in India—at number 10. The title of the most densely populated city in the world is held by Mogadishu in Somalia, with over 33,000 people sharing one square kilometer.

Thank you. My city is fighting the install of paved front lawns due to reductions in new development requirements to build parking. Street parking also keeps being replaced by bike lanes and lane patios, so people have taken to paving the extremely small front lawns. Flooding has risen to the point that they have needed to dredge the primary spill way for the former flood plane as it keeps overtopping. There need to be minimum amounts of bare earth with plants for water to escape into the water table. This is not blaming any one cause but a condemnation of my city for failing to do actual civil engineering and environmental engineering assessments on neighborhood scales and instead looking at them one building at a time. 1 building with fully paved land isn't a problem but block upon block of them causes nightmares.

I Wonder How One Can Live In A Mansion Like These Without Feeling Immense Guilt
by telling yourself some version of "it is their own fault", usually disguised by a more positive formulation such as '"work hard and you will succeed", or by refering to such an illusive thing as the "trickle down effect" whereby you "sell" the idea that what you are doing is actually helping them, because your lavish lifestyle generates jobs that sustain them.
The simple answer, and this is the honest truth, you cannot care about everything. It's humanly impossible. It's one thing to judge this picture, it's another to actually live next to slums. You cannot solve the problem, yet you suffer it's effects near daily. It changes your prospective from worrying about them to being protected from them.
Big damn fence is how. Would living in smaller house eliminate that slum? I somehow doubt it. Not being heartless. Just real.
We have a really big house. 10,009 sq feet. We help lots of people. My eyes are open. We also help the wildlife with a field of wild flowers, bat houses, bird feeders, and deer feeders. We belong to big brothers/sisters to help young people. We are always the first person to call if you need bail.
And yet people feel entitled to just take it all away from you because they they want what you have and you should just “hand it over”.

Btw these "rich" folks houses did probably cost much less because of their location and were probably acquired by some "regular" folks who dreamed about having a big house and worked for it hard but were only able to afford these.
Exactly what I've been saying for a long time. You know we live in a sick society when people can live like this and turn a blind eye to all the suffering in the world.

I don't know why people have a problem with these buildings. They house thousands and thousands of people in possibly the most efficient means possible. And when you're inside your home, do you really care what the outside looks like? You have shelter and comfort, that's all that matters.
I’d say most people here commenting like that have always lived in a secure housing situation I guess. I can see this being a dream to a lot of people I’ve known from very diff backgrounds not from the 1st world living standards.

And yes, there are public transit incentives being done. You should see Wilshire Blvd in Hancock park. That new station is a behemoth.
Minneapolis-St Paul, Minnesota destroyed a number of neighborhoods back in the 1960s when the interstate was built between the downtowns of the two cities. Naturally, most of the destroyed neighborhoods were where mainly Black folks lived. It took far too long for officials to learn how much was destroyed, including potential increased wealth through home ownership. They're finally making plans to try to restore some of what was lost in the Rondo neighborhood that was split in two when the highway went through it. Low-income people seemingly always pay the highest price for these shenanigans.
I believe it was down south somewhere. I seen a program somewhere, maybe on PBS back in the 60's I believe where there was a large community of black people. They had started to gain clout/power in the political areas. I believed there was 1 or 2 black politicians in the state government. To break up the power the black community the white politicians decided to build a interstate highway through the middle of the community. Destroying homes and businesses even though right next to the community there was a perfectly good area to put a interstate highway.
Load More Replies...Whether extremely densely populated or not, expanding cities to conveniently accommodate large numbers of people requires more than just buildings; proper infrastructure has to be created as well. That might lead to some unfortunate decisions—as seen in some of these pictures—such as a maze of streets with a school trapped within it, for instance, or a huge highway crossing the middle of a residential area.
However, not all examples of modern development are as disastrous as they might seem after viewing this list. Take Sheikh Zayed Road in Dubai, for instance; not much but a road with some buildings here and there just five decades ago, it is now a bustling artery of the city surrounded by modern buildings.
Tokyo, Japan
I've been to Tokyo twice. Many pictures make it seem like some sort of dystopian buildings hell overflowing with humans. In reality, it is a very pleasant metropolis, with a lot of trees many parks, and mostly low rise buildings. In fact Tokyo is mostly residential when you get away from the district train stations.
Most major cities are built like this (in my country). Downtown is far from residental areas and are there for tourists and are full of workplaces.

It's cool to be able to put them on and see what things really look like for a few minutes but it's kind of a relief taking them off. I think if I walked through this city with those glasses on, my head would explode
I love Tokyo, walk 5 minutes from the major areas to streets barely wide enough for a mini car, clean and safe.

Since We're Posting Photos Of Cairo, Here Is One I Took While Landing For A Connecting Flight
When I visited Cairo/Giza I learned that (besides being one of the most populous cities on earth) their government only taxes buildings that are completed. Because of the extreme poverty there, the ppl have found a loophole - thousands of unfinished apartment buildings. No roofs, no electricity, no running water. Slums, essentially. It was so heartbreaking to witness. Especially in stark juxtaposition to their glorious history and historic architecture .
Same in Peru. Entire neighbourhoods of unfinished houses, all occupied, many of them have been like that for decades. They have electricity and water/sewage, just comfortable enough to live in, but no roof.

Guys, We Just Need To Build Another Ring Road. This Time It’ll Fix The Traffic Guys, I Promise. Guys?
In houston it can take over an hour to get to Houston. It’s basically the size of all of Connecticut
Too many construction projects happening at the same time. I count 62 projects. Put 1000 people to fix one mile. That's one person for every 5ish feet of asphalt. 1-2 days, move onto the next one. All projects done one summer.
We already have three around Paris, and I can tell you, the traffic problems are NOT fixed.
They had a plan like that for London back in the 1960s. Thankfully it got stopped.

So roads are bad because? Houston is a nice city even though they have roads
Native Houstonian here, I know of which I speak. The 'loops' have helped over the decades but all of the unhindered growth during that time hasn't stopped. Back in the late 1950's, my parents moved to their first home after graduating from UofH. All their friends were dismayed that they moved 'so far out', which at the time was just past Loop 610 in the Sharpstown area of SW Houston. When my hubby and I left the city in 1993, they were just finishing up the second loop, Beltway 8. One of the things that made Houston unlivable by that time was the road rage and bumper to bumper traffic on the Interstates - an hour and a half to go 20 miles. Last visit I made back home a few years ago the freeway system was overwhelming - going west on I-10 from Houston there were 10 lanes each way. The changes to this city in 75 years are really sad, all due to the granddaddy of all our problems, overpopulation. It's not so much what we do as HOW MANY OF US are doing it!
This is an old map-Hwy 99 runs all the way to Mont Belvieu now. You can bypass 146 north past I-10. Plus the speed limit is 75 mph. Much faster.

At least it looks like real brick. In the US, all new construction is now created out of discarded amazon boxes.
Most building in the UK is brick/concrete. I think for the US in many parts the fact is you have a LOT of wood, it makes sense to build with the materials you have to hand.

I've been to Dresden not too often, but I've seen it firsthand nevertheless - there's a lot restored faithfully. A parking lot is ugly, like always, and I'd prefer a parking house to use less area for it and maybe place solar panels on top, but nothing it repurposed easier than a facility consisting of a flat are and some marks on the ground - you could easily remove the parking lot and build something nice, in this and almost every case.
In mitigation, after WWII West Germany was given huge amounts of aid from the USA to rebuild, while East Germany was required to pay huge amounts in war reparations to the USSR. The fact that the East Germans managed to rebuild anything at all says something about Germans.
to be fair Dresden had the living c**p bombed out of it during WW2, controversially, thus it was deemed better more efficient to just flatten Dresden and start again, like a lot of Germany after WW2 was all rebuilt from scratch especially during the 80's when builders from everywhere went to Germany (including many from the UK) to help rebuild
Not in DDR, not in Dresden and half of Berlin etc. Soviet Zone, naven´t you heard?

At a guess, either a park or some hastily-built post-war blocks which provided something that was no longer viable after the collapse of communism and turned out to be too shoddily built to be repurposed. Shoddily built post-war buildings were common in West Germany too, hence the name of the band Einstürzende Neubauten (Collapsing New Buildings).

It wasn't a fake though, it was built in the early 1920s when that style was fashionable in places all over the world, and was a historic landmark in Tokyo. What's sadder is that it was not demolished and replaced by the after building, the after was a new station building built right next to it, then the old station was later demolished with the excuse that being made of wood, it was a fire hazard

The Destruction Of American Cities - Detroit Edition
Or we could call it the construction of the interstate highway system. Even though the underlying purpose of Eisenhower's interstate system was the easy transportation of military personnel and equipment around the country, the highways have made American life easier and of higher quality for more of the population. The number one thing that the highways make possible is moving food and consumer goods. So that people living in northern places, Detroit for example, can eat fresh produce all winter long.
And yet somehow many other cities and countries manage to have a solid highway system without destroying downtown sections.

we had some really f****d up ideas when it came to social housing after WW2 in the UK... though some of it was really well made (apart from the asbestos, though wasn't aware of the dangers back then)....I'm in social housing myself,a really nice flat (apartment) in the suburbs,of a medium sized town it's quiet and peaceful, built in the 50's I believe, really solid structure, two storey build well maintained by local authority,I'm just lucky I guess as some I've seen in my travels are just no longer fit for purpose
Load More Replies...It's like this: the architect's name was Goldfinger and yes Ian Fleming named the Bond villain after him because of the harm he did to London's streets. Unfortunately, that building's listed (protected) so it can't be knocked down or even modified to deal with the fact that it's dreadfully insulated and so expensive to heat.

Hashima Island - Nagasaki, Japan
It was a forced labour site. The island had access to an under sea coal mine and was abandoned in the 1970's when it ran out of coal.
Coal mining facility was established in 1887 and the first concrete apartment building was built in 1916 to house workers. Unfortunately, in 1930s until the end of WW2, the island housed Korean and Chinese force laborers. This island was also known as Battleship Island. So to be fair, it doesn't seem like it was ever built with aesthetic as a top priority.

A Trap Aim For Blind People, Taiwan
That looks like like fairly standard barriers to stop cyclists and other wheeled vehicles getting through. A problem for blind people yes, but the sort of thing you'd be used to if you live there.
The problem is that it is blocking the ongoing strip in the middle - this different structure actually is a tactile guide system for visually impaired people. So when you are using a cane, it guides you right into the obstacle.
Load More Replies...This is downright cruel and it defeats the purpose of the guidance tiles. They suck at times - think a suitcase on small wheels, heavily loaded - but, I happily accept that minor discomfort if it enables the blind to walk safe and independent. But, here, it's truly a trap aimed at them. As I don't wanna conclude this being purposeful, it's still a mindstretching bit of ignorance you need to pull it through, especially as there, likely, is some sort of control meant to be in place and sufficiently filter out mistakes like this. Has is been corrected yet?
You have a point, but this is Taiwan which is a chaotic mess of mopeds/scooters and wheeled food/merch carts. Without this after thought of a barrier, guaranteed this area would be littered with obstructions. The blind would know these imperfect solutions and would most likely prefer this to a complete jumble of parked scooters.

I’m not saying Tulsa is known for its beauty, but I’m pretty sure that no city deserves to be judged by it’s industrial parks
Literally turn that camera around and it would be pointed at the most beautiful collection of art deco buildings in the world. Architecture schools from all over the world come to Tulsa specifically to study deco.
Most US cities are ugly? What a mean spirited thing to say. That's a manufacturing area. Not a place people live. Just a place they make things. You might as well say, "Most European cities are Charleroi, Belgium" That makes as much sense.
Also, I guarantee the OP hasn't seen 'most' cities in the US or any other country for that matter. For every gross city in any country there is an equally lovely one.
Load More Replies...What a sweeping generalization. Not all U.S. cities are ugly. Many have stunning examples of architecture and famous historical sites. Others have gorgeous parks and green spaces.
misleading post! this is an industrial, warehouse-filled commercially zoned area and a very slanted representation of Tulsa. shame on OP
This Is A School In My Neighborhood. Yes, It's A Charter School, And Yes It's Sheet Metal
Inexpensive and utilitarian. Ugly too, but I’d way rather the spending be on good, well paid teachers, as well as ample materials and resources for the students. I bet this design was also taking into consideration lockdown defensibility and general safety.
"Lockdown defensibility" is nice and all, but what the hell kind of world do we live in that schools have to actually be fortresses...

American public transport is dire! More concentration and reliable public transport, could solve a lot of problems here. We have a very decent public transport system (I know it can run late and there's been a few strikes of late) but many commuters have their own cars or similar and would never use the car to go to their job. Yes we have some issues here (UK) but it's such a vital service that many couldn't do without it. Our train drivers went on strike because of pay, but they get £50.000py. Our nurses don't get what they should, but £50.000 isn't that bad. It made me angry for many of our public services should get way more.
Gorgeous Historical Building Used As Parking Lot, Napoli, Italy
So, they neatly park cars inside an historic building instead of ripping it down to build a multistory garage. This is a problem how? Did I miss something?
In Italy are so much historical houses and monuments you can hardly find a bit of land without historic price. Thank God they uses it.
Load More Replies...It's Italy. We have a lot of history and very little space. Most of our buildings are "historical" to US/Anglo standards. Can you imagine what it is to build a subway in ROME? We preserve most of our cultural heritage, but sometimes you have to choose between past and present and some minor stuff just got reused. I assure you that if that building has anything of actual cultural or historical value, it is being preserved.
Yes, dig and you’ll only find more protected history and/or graves. A nightmare for building, but what a great problem to have!

With 10B people, do we live in high packed boxed urban terrible or suburban sprawl terrible. People have to live somewhere. Sprawl prevents high rises at the sacrifice of land. High rises save land at the cost of skyline.
"beautiful nature" and "salt lake city" don't belong in the same sentence.

The main issue seems to be that humans are overpopulated. We need to commit to reducing the population. From 8 billion down to just 4 or 5 billion. And keep it there.
Ok. I agree we are an unsustainably overpopulated planet, but how do you propose we “commit to reducing the population from 8 billion down to just 4 or 5 billion. And keep it there?” Pretty sure that pipe dream requires planned mass extermination and a whole mess of eugenics. The vast majority of the planets agrees (rightly so) that such an approach is bat guano crazy and just plain evil. Edit: for you downvote folks, think about it. Is it really a logistical possibility to eliminate 4-5 BILLION people from the planet in any normal way??

Overpopulation. If there weren't 8 billion of us, a lot of these places wouldn't even exist. We're out of living space and housing now - wait until we run out of food and water.
What do you suggest to fix the problem of increasing world population?
